Bring Back Gym Inc.

Bring Back Gym Inc. is an agency that specializes in creating fitness programs with a multi-leveled approach in dealing with the issue of childhood obesity. We provide a more evolved curriculum that moves beyond the current “survival of the fittest” in physical fitness programs. The current physical fitness curriculums are leaving behind the ever-growing ranks of overweight children. These children feel alienated because of their obesity and cannot participate fully in the majority of exercise programs. At Bring Back Gym, we are specifically targeting children ages 11-14 are experiencing the physical and psycho-social effects of being overweight for the first time. Bring Back Gym was created because of these effects coupled with the definitive need to provide a cutting edge physical fitness curriculum. We are the new idea in fitness for children. According to Health Human Services, 20 percent of U.S. children and youth will be obese by 2010. Obesity results from a disproportionate amount of enery consumed and amount of energy expended. Hypertension, insulin resistance, sleep apnea, menstrual abnormalities and orthopedic problems are among the many disorders linked to childhood obesity. The negative health and finanical consequences of obesity are extensive, with estimates of $750 million per year of health care spending for children diagnosed as obese. Bring Back Gym is seeking 100 percent government funding and corporate sponsorship to have participants get involved at no cost. By 2010, Bring Back Gym Inc. will assist with reducing the cost of annual health cost by decreasing the percentage of of health care spending for children diagnosed as obese.

FITNESS CURRICULUM aka THE FITNESS CYCLE

The fitness pyramid begins with strength. Strength training or resistance exercise plays a pivotal role in captivating and retaining an obese child’s interest in exercise. Contrary to popular myth, children ages 11 and up can begin to do resistance work without any detrimental effects to growth. There simply is no evidence to support that strength training has negative effects on a child’s growth. Strength training is easily measured and easy for children to understand. Strength work provides that initial feeling of confidence of a goal set and a goal accomplished. Particularly among obese children, it provides the means for them to engage in an exercise program without the feeling of being unfairly judged. Strength training consists of a series of circuit training routines of variable intensity. Each routine is comprised of exercises that target major muscle groups. In order to keep the children engaged fully without distraction, the routines are separated into four ten minute intervals with one minute rest in between.
More benefits include:

> Improved muscular efficiency
> Improved muscle to fat ratio
> Greater resistance to injury
> Improved motor coordination

Of the state’s largest 10 cities, Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Anaheim tip the scales with 36%, 35% and 32% of their children overweight respectfully. The report, based on published school fitness test scores for fifth-seventh and ninth graders are the first to look at the percentage of overweight children in specific communities.

Effectiveness

Shaquille O'Neal, a four-time NBA champion and a role model to millions, is on a quest to battle this scourge and help kids across America live more healthfully. His new series, Shaq's Big Challenge, debut TUESDAY, JUNE 26 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network and is produced by RDF USA (Wife Swap). Shaq and his hand-picked "dream team" of experts embark on a crusade to help transform six obese middle school youngsters from Florida into healthy, fit kids - and along the way, demonstrate how other communities nationwide can help fight childhood obesity. In Shaq's Big Challenge he puts six obese youngsters through the most intense, emotional and rewarding time of their young lives. He is aided by six specialists, including: Shaq's own physician and trainer, Dr. Carlon "Doc" Colker, M.D.; personal trainer Tarik Tyler; nutritionist Joy Bauer; childhood obesity expert Dr. William Muinos, M.D. from Miami Children's Hospital; Food Network celebrity chef Tyler Florence; and Shaq's Louisiana State University coach Dale Brown. Together they go into the kids' homes and, schools, then expand their scope to meet with the local school and government officials to develop and implement a wellness program for the children of the community, and later for the entire state of Florida. This mission does not end with these six children. The goal is for every child in the local schools to take part in Shaq's plan. His dream team addresses the challenges of providing tasty, kid-friendly nutritious meals on a budget, as well as incorporating more exercise into the kids' days. For instance, physical education is no longer mandatory in many public schools across the U.S., so Shaq and his team will develop revolutionary programs to allow every child to get consistent exercise while at school. Once he has accomplished his mission at this school, Shaq and his team will have laid the groundwork to achieve their ultimate goal: to create a fitness plan that could be accepted across the whole of Florida and serve as a template for the entire country. Shaq's Big Challenge will change the way we approach the health of a nation -- one child, one community, one state at a time, until we truly are a happier, healthier, fitter America. Executive producers are Rick Ringbakk, Greg Goldman, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Coelen, Christopher Handy, Perry Rogers, Michael Parris and Stephen Lambert. The series is produced by RDF USA. It is based on the hit U.K. series, Unfit Kids.
Tarik Tyler, Chief Executive Officer and Shawn Choy-Horne, Chief Financial Officer, will collaborate with public schools and parents to provide a rigorous fitness program to one million obese children in America.

Which element of the program proved itself most effective?

Bring Back Gym Inc. will significantly reduce body fat levels of middle school children by 30% during the school year .We are projecting that 75% of all participating children will show this decrease in body fat levels. To teach children to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise and be self motivated to maintain an active lifestyle. Parents will be educated in the group of diversity and individual physical activities available to improve their child’s health. Full commitment to the program from both parent and child is necessary, parental involvement for example, updates on their child’s progress as well as providing support with dealing with the emotional issues behind their child’s over eating. Families of involved participants will learn the value of keeping their child healthy and fit.
Children involved in the program will show marked improvement in physical fitness and self confidence.

Number of clients in the last year?

The four boys and two girls you see on Shaq's Big Challenge attend middle school in Broward County, Florida. Shaq and his team of experts selected these kids from a pool nominated by concerned parents. Shaq's job is to motivate them and keep them on track. His experts are teaching the kids how to eat better, get active, and change unhealthy habits. Shaq's team, Tarik Tyler, Fitness Trainer, is determined to help these kids succeed!

What is the potential demand?

"A new Government Accountability Office (GAO) Investigation cities “increasing physical activity” as the most important approach to preventing or reducing childhood obesity. Based on a review of 53 articles published from 2003 through 2006, the investigative arm of Congress concluded that the increasing rate of childhood obesity is largely due to the decline in regular physical activity.” The report, Childhood Obesity: Factors Affecting Physical Activity, released in December 2006, grouped multiple factors affecting levels of physical activity in children into three primary categories: demographic factors, cognitive and behavioral factors, and community factors.

Scaling up Strategy

Bring Back Gym's priority is to combat childhood obesity by creating a more fun, stimulating and educational exercise environment for middle school children and reducing their weight by 30% during the school year in California, New York State and Florida. We would like to assist with implementing our program on the nation's childhood obesity epidemic.
