Are you a traveler or a travel company?

Tell us your idea. What makes your idea innovative?

We decided that the uniqueness of Kerala can only be preserved for posterity by ensuring sustainability initiatives. Hence we went about identifying stake holders in the industry who care for nature, environment and the social / cultural / historic fabric of Kerala. Through our marketing initiatives, we promote only those properties / service providers who have a strong commitment for sustainability initiatives. These are adequately highlighted in our websites to enable the travelers to decide on who they desire to go with while planning their holiday in Kerala.

Prior to seeking an association and taking them on board our team evaluates each stake holder to ascertain their commitment to sustainability initiatives in their own specialized field of activity. As we study their ongoing activities we suggest improvements.

We now have a range hotels / resorts that have actively adopted sustainable practices in their day-to-day operations, homestays at different locations offering the best of local experience, forest guides who are reformed and rehabilitated poachers, driver-cum-guides who drive their own vehicles for their livelihood and artists who promote traditional art and dance forms and practitioners of the ancient health science of Ayurveda. The income generated by these stake holders gets ploughed back into the local community for their enhancement.

What is the likely impact of your idea?

Control the unregulated growth of tourism. Educate the stake holders to initiate sustainable practices where tourists can enjoy their holiday and at the same time respect the environment and the culture of people

What would it take to launch or spread your idea?

Increased representation and involvement of the local population in tourism development both in terms of participation in the decision-making process and in terms of benefit sharing is the key to ensure sustainability. The impact of tourism, whether positive or negative, is most strongly felt at the community level – hence sustainability / conservation challenges must be initiated at the community level.

Most of the stakeholders engage in sustainable tourism initiatives without realizing that they are doing so, just because it makes economic sense – it is cheaper to engage staff from the locality, source consumables from the local market, harvest rain water, recycle waste for compost, set up solar water heaters, energy saving devices etc.

To this end awareness of the various initiatives that can be launched in Kerala will be most beneficial

Describe yourself as a social innovator.

Many ecologically sensitive areas of Kerala – the backwaters, the tropical rain forests and the beaches are experiencing pressure from growing numbers of tourists and the detrimental impacts from growth in lifestyles. If Kerala is to remain as a favored tourist destination, urgent action is required to ensure Sustainable tourism initiatives.

Love for the place of my birth and the feeling that I need to do something good to protect this land is the main motivation for starting the initiative. Moreover after a useful 26 years in the Indian Army, I feel it is ‘Pay back time’ – I owe it to my place of birth and the community!!

Create an awareness of the adverse effects of over-exploitation of nature among the stake holders in the hospitality industry and the travelers - a slow process and results may not be immediately forthcoming or visible. Over time, the travelers will be aware of sustainable tourism. The stake holders already understand the importance of sustainability for the long term.
