What is the goal of your innovation? Please describe in one sentence the kind of impact, change, or reform your approach is intended to achieve.

Provide generation of income and employment to the communities close to the karstic landscapes in Paripiranga (city in the state of Bahia), through the development of community ecotourism.

Please write an overview of your project. Include how your approach supports or embodies geotourism or destination stewardship. This text will appear when people scroll over the icon for your entry on the map located on the competition homepage.

The demand for ecotourism has grown fast in the last years. The demand for sustainable methodologies of ecological management is also growing. The link between toursim and ecological can generate employment and income.
The Instituto Socioambiental Árvore and its partners are seeking for resurces to implement the Paripiranga Caves Project. The project needs R$ 200.000,00 to be obtained by internal resources and external fundraising.
The lack of job opportunities and low income in the city of Paripiranga, Bahia State, linked with the lack of ecotourism and Karstic landscape management in the region are the problems we want to solve.
In order to increase the income and employment generation in the region through community based tourism, we need first to map the region, train 60 youth and communicate our eco-tourist product “Caves of Paripiragna” within 12 months.
After the training, in order to implement what was planned, we need the support of all partners, and we need to involve the community with management and the development of the tourist products (lodge, food, trails, etc). The project is supported by the Chico Mendes Institute (Municipal Mayor of Paripiranga), Physis Institute (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Brazilian society of Ecotourism, regional companies.

Explain in detail why your approach is innovative

We want to engage the community with the whole process of the Project. The first step, Participatory Diagnosis, will consolidate the results of the diagnosis that our team already got, that intended to show the potential of transformation of the communities through ecotourism. During the interviews with the community, they demonstrated interest on the implementation of community based ecotourism in order to improve the quality of life of the communities around the Paripiranga Caves.
During the second step, the idea is to empower the community, providing lots of trainings that will teach the community to create projects, business plans and discuss future opportunities. At this stage, we also want to plan the eco-tourist product (Paripiranga Caves) and will work on the ecotourism manual.
We hope the community gets involved with the planning of the product and also implement the activity in the region. That’s the reason we intend to involve the community during the process of development of the product, when they can link they will connect what was learned during the courses and will work on the communication materials.

Impact

Describe the degree of success you have had to date. How do you measure, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the impact on sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How has it transformed or contributed to the power of place or demonstrated the sustainability of tourism? How does your approach minimize negative impacts?

Until now, the main qualitative and quantitative impacts were: (a) establishing a local research, (b) meeting of 05 research volunteers; (c) Development of 02 scientific research to understand the potential of ecotourism, (d) cartographic mapping of 16 karstic landscapes (caves, grottoes, Furnas, etc.). (e) Involvement of partners, companies and universities in the work; (f) Completion of 02 technical visits for environmental awareness, (g) protection of various palaeontological objects (fossil) found in the caves, (i) planning and negotiation for construction of the Natural History Museum of Paripiranga. With these activities we have engaged directly and indirectly around 5,000 people.

In what ways are local residents actively involved in your work, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?

How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?

(...) We hope the community gets involved with the planning of the product and also implement the activity in the region. That’s the reason we intend to involve the community during the process of development of the product, when they can link they will connect what was learned during the courses and will work on the communication materials.
3. How does...Since ancient man sought mechanisms for survival, including the caves, used to rest without the risk of being attacked by other human groups, animals or to store products from hunting and fishing. According to Lino (2001:9), "since the ancient times humanity is attracted by the beauties and mysteries of the caves." The caves are repeated in many civilizations throughout history, with fascinating view which meant that the caves have to man's past until the present, seeking their origins and future potential.

Describe how your work helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area's cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues.

Visiting caves helps us to understand how men used to live in the past and how human lives evolved through time. According to Auler e Zogbi (2005), the caves have a rich natural heritage, scientific and cultural, still unknown. There are lots of opportunities for sustainable use of the caves, with vision for the speleotourism, aiming to preserve the natural and cultural heritage speleological, understand this as an activity of contact with nature.

Sustainability

How is your initiative currently financed? If available, provide information on your finances and organization that could help others. Please list: Annual budget, annual revenue generated, size of part-time, full-time and volunteer staff.

We need R$ 200.000,00 for the project, and we are planning to get this amount through internal resources and fundraising. The project is supported by the Chico Mendes Institute (Municipal Mayor of Paripiranga), Physis Institute (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Brazilian society of Ecotourism, regional companies. Our internal resources and from other partners guarantee 50% of the resources needed.

Is your initiative financially and organizationally sustainable? If not, what is required to make it so? Is there a potential demand for your innovation?

The initiative is sustainable if the project can be totally implemented. So we need to work on the first steps of the project, such as training and planning of the tourist product. The most important thing is to build the infra-structure of the project (lodging, food, trails, etc.)

What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?

This project was created based on the plan for development of the Ecotourism in the National Forest of Ibura, and it was approved by the Petrobras Development and Citizenship Program, which shows the potential for replication. However, most of the available resources dont allow the investment to build the infra-structure (lodging, Food, trails) and this is our main barrier.

What is your plan to expand or further develop your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.

Before expanding, we need to consolidate the project. Our activities in the National Forest of Ibura (Sergipe) and Paripiranga Caves (Bahia) are still at the initial stage (elaboration, training). We need resources to build the infra-structure planed by the community in order to have financial sustainability of the project and the management of the tourist products. Then we will be able to measure the impact of our actions and plan how to improve them.

The Story

What is the origin of your innovation? Tell the Changemakers and media communities what prompted you to start this initiative.

When he was a kid, Carlos Eduardo, had problems in relationships with other children because of its tendency to scientism, or the like to address issues that were related sciences, such as animals (Biology), fire and water (Physical Chemistry), Mechanical and Electronics, different from others, like that in most games and football. This helped him to be closer to the natural world, animals, plants and natural resources. During Youth, he was reconnected with the social environment and began to create excellent human relations, becoming leader of student events, and joining in the course of administration.During the course of administration, he won the two awards from the University, the Award Serigy Academic Performance (2003), and the Award for Social Marketing (2004). Also in his Course of Administration he got a scholarship of FASE for the year 2005, when he began studies on Ecotourism. He finished his academic life in FASE as the President of the Directory of Students in 2006. In 2003, Carlos Eduardo, created, founded and has since been directing the Instituto Socioambiental Arvore. He found his reason of live in this organization, in which he aligns his personal vision/values with the vision of the organizationNowadays, Calos Eduardo is the author of the Environmental Dictionary (Thex Publisher). He studied business administration (FASE), with an extension in Planning and Management of Social Projects (UNIT) e is doing his masters in Agro ecosystems (NEREN/UFS). He works as a professor and coordinator of the Business class at Ages University. He is also the president of the board of Instituto Socioambiental Árvore. Carlos Eduardo is also the editor of the Ecotourism Magazine, Campus Magazine (AGES), Brazilian Ecotourism Magazine, e Ibero-American Magazine of Environmental Sciences (NASA-UFRJ/USP/ÁRVORE).When he moved to Paripiranga, in Bahia State, he realized the great potential for development of ecotourism in caves, or karstic landscapes - also called espeleotourism. Thus, he mobilized scholars, communities, businesses and local government in the development of search activity, we call Caves of Paripiranga Project.

Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers' marketing material.

Describe some unique tourist experiences that your approach provides. Be specific; give illustrative examples.

We are promoting Ecotourism in the Northwest region of Brazil. Ecotourism is not only about a nice travel to a beautiful place. It is also a way to value the local culture, to develop the communities, to preserve the natural resources, contributing to build sustainable societies. We call this socio-environmental innovation as Ecotourism Project in the Northeast, and it includes different projects like: Ecotourism Project in the National Forest of the Northeast, Paripiranga cave Project, Ecotourism Forum of the Northeast, Ecotourism Magazine of the Northeast. These projects have local and global impact.

What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?

The Ecotourism Project in the Northeast has created the first regional event to disseminate and discuss the theme, bringing together not only people from the Northeast, but the whole country. There is no record-level worldwide, of another mechanism for scientific communication that deals specifically with this subject. The Ecotourism Magazine of the Northeast is the first one. We helped its creation and we now participate in the editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Ecotourism. The local ecotourism projects, especially those in the Caves of Paripiranga are joining community, business and government for the development of the region. The project is supported by the Chico Mendes Institute (Municipal Mayor of Paripiranga), Physis Institute (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, Brazilian society of Ecotourism, regional companies.
