In URDT using the visionary approach and system thinking, we believe that living in symbiotic relationship with nature is the only way to create food security and sufficiency. Therefore, there is a need to practice agriculture with ecological balance (agro ecology) for sustainability due to health reasons and environmental concerns.

What makes your approach innovative?

The approach is innovative in a way that; it is a paradigm shift from the problem solving to the creative and visionary orientation. This is characterised by the power to MAKE CONSCIOUS CHOICES under the following perspectives;
1. It helps the people to shift from reacting to vagaries of nature and circumstances to making choices in favour of what they fundamentally want i.e. to be healthy.
2. The people have the ability to observe the current reality truthfully (without colouring)
3. They appreciate the discrepancy/gap between what they desire (being healthy) and what they have (poor health).
4. The farmers know that in order to realise good yield they need good farming practices including water and soil conservation

The innovation recognises the following practices:
Multiple Cropping and crop rotation, traditional methods of preserving food are encouraged, integrated organic farming practices and group farming as a social capital.

Describe Your Idea

In URDT using the visionary approach and system thinking, we believe that living in symbiotic relationship with nature is the only way to create food security and sufficiency. Therefore, there is a need to practice agriculture with ecological balance (agro ecology) for sustainability due to health reasons and environmental concerns.

How will you sustain your solution?

1. The shift in orientation from the reactive to the creative orientation is a powerful step toward empowerment and the freedom to make choices. The people create the vision of the future they want rather act on the basis of the dictates of nature and the environment. The people will then act in their best interest. In the problem orientation people want to get rid of hunger/famine. In the visionary and creative orientation energies are directed at creating what truly matters to them. Each success or result they ask “what next?” Whereas in the problem solving orientation, what a problem is perceived to be over, they say, “thank God it is over and they wait for another problem as a stimulus. They will know what it takes to have a good garden, ensure productivity in the long run and have sufficient supply at the household level with surplus for marketing.

What will be the impact of your solution?

Expected impact
1. The farmers will be in charge of their farming processes rather than the current dependency on external factors like supply of seeds, fertilizers, agro-chemicals and production inputs
2. The soil and water management practices will ensure the soil productivity for a long time.
3. Availability of food at a sustainable level will ensure good health.
4. The conversion methods: grains converted into milk and meat which are also converted into money for investing in farming
5. One of the principles in nutrition based agriculture is to produce carbohydrates, proteins and sources of minerals and vitamins. Agro-forestry is one practice for producing fruits which are eaten fresh and can be processed through drying for example to be eaten when the fruits are off season
6. Introduction of appropriate technologies like water harvesting from rocks, house roofs and trees will help in micro irrigation
