How does your innovation currently get kids (or how might it get kids) engaged in physical activity? How would your idea or project potentially be implemented during the school day?

Switch2Health believes that the real challenge is in motivating individuals to be physically active, a critical component of the equation to solve the problems of childhood overweight and obesity. We believe this ‘carrot’ approach incentivizes kids to begin, maintain and/ or increase their level of physical activity and ultimately lead a healthier lifestyle

During a school day, teachers can challenge students for a week or month’s activity and the student who does the most can be rewarded with a certificate. Similarly, schools can challenge other schools or Atlanta could challenge New York, for example. Kids can fill up the activity monitor by playing sports (football, basketball, soccer, tennis etc), dancing, running during recess or physical education classes and more

Name Your Project

Be Active, Get Rewards with the S2H REPLAY- the watch that rewards physical activity

How many children does this program currently or plan to serve? How much time does each child spend daily/weekly engaged in physical activity? (150 words max)

The innovative program has been designed to encourage kids to engage in 60 minutes of moderate to intensive physical activity a day. It is designed for teens and tweens and can be used on an individual, class, school or state scale.

The device has been dubbed the ‘Next Generation Livestrong’ bracelet and will be supported by celebrity endorsements, making this a socially desirable and popular device to wear by the millions of kids that need to be active each day.

Tell us the story behind the social innovator. (150 words max)

The two co-founders, Seth Tropper and Amado Batour, were appalled at the problems of childhood obesity and set out to reverse the trend by spending three years researching the causes of obesity and developing the innovative technology that’s inside the S2H REPLAY module.

Seth is an experienced entrepreneur with proven track record in operations, finance and strategy. Prior to Switch2Health, he was a founding partner of high-tech startup, PlasmaSol Corp., acquired by Fortune 100 medical device maker Stryker Corp. for $20 million.

With over a 15 year multidisciplinary design background, Amado Batour brings together a unique combination of creative skills and marketing perspective to all of his work.

This is a great idea. Are there any plans to create school sets at at reduced price?  I think my kids would love this but I think at 19.95 per watch and over 1200 students in my school, it would be hard for me to finance.

Hi Tim, appreciate the feedback and glad you like the idea!  Naturally, we feel the S2H REPLAY would be perfect for motivating kids to be active in schools and Switch2Health would certainly be able to offer schools a discount for large volume orders.

Would this just be for your school or would it also include other schools in the area? That way your school would be able to challenge them to see who could accumulate the most hours of activity over time and also benefit from buying a larger volume at a further reduced price.

I would also suggest you follow Switch2Health on Twitter (www.twitter.com/switch2health) and become a fan on facebook (search for Switch2Health) as we occasionally post a limited number of promotional codes there to help our fans/ followers.

Feel free to ask any further questions...

...forgot to add that you could also get a local company to sponsor your school and customize the band to help them create awareness and loyalty

Hello Goutham, Just want to say this is afab idea. One suggestion would be, to colaborate with a scheme going on in the UK called Active 4 Life. My Gym has joined the scheme promoting healthy living, I can see this product being something they would definately be interested in. Also being a national scheme it is supported by the government so I am sure if the pitch is right they will have the funds to back this project. Please let me know what you think. Jay

Very cool idea! Aloha Goutham, wonderful product with 'growing room'. There are so many applications yet to be applied. Has a way been explored to 'give' people the option of personalizing the images printed on the S2H? It could be a very fun thing for children and adults alike to print favorable images &/or worlds, art, words, poems, lyrics, you name it, and the S2H is a canvas of unlimited potential AND it responds to & mirrors our 'actions'. Thanks for bringing this to the table. Now chidren everywhere may never sit still, laughing all the way to the bank. Laugh Out Loud! Peace~! a.

Hi Goutham,

This is a great idea, very innovative...definitely something that should not just be for kids but adults too...perhaps a future development could be rewarding more for the intensity of the exercise rather than time only as 60 minutes of walking has a different impact on someone's health compared to 60 minutes of runing...could work if technology can allow this...

Look forward to hearing more about it...

Goutham,

Congrats on the project. I like the idea of schools and clubs (within schools) competing against each other.  In America, there is much rivalry among schools in local communities, and this could create demand in large lots.  S2H definitely seems like a great solution to the obesity epidemic. Cheers Mate!

This has come up at the right time and at the right place. OBESITY is a Time Bomb and I am sure that this innovative change would filter down to the World. Apart form obesity issues, it is truely a participatory and practical life changing innovation. All would like to be part of this as an exercise and lifestyle habit - and rewards tooo ! Wow too much yaaa

Sabarathnam

You may pleased to hear that the Time Bomb you referred to is getting attention at the highest level. Earlier, First Lady Michelle Obama warned that the dangers of childhood obesity mean that...

'...for the first time in the history of our nation, the next generation may be on track to having a shorter lifespan than this generation, and their parents! None of us wants a future like that for our children."

Let's hope this translates into action!

Wow! Thank you to all of you who have voted, made this their favorite or added a comment- we really appreciate your support.

  • Jaymin- great suggestion- although we will be initially testing this out in the US, I shall check out Active 4 Life and see how your gym may benefit.
  • a b- I believe you sent a message to me so I shall reply direct to that.  In short, these can be customized for a large enough order
  • Mehul- we hope adults would also use the S2H REPLAY to encourage the whole family to go out and be active together.  A future generation could also differentiate between different activities but at the moment, this is in line with the Center for Disease Control's recommendation for kids to get 60 mins of moderate to physical activity a day
  • Youngbloodz- I would love to see a national competition to see who has the most active school. Maybe Atlanta could be the pioneer?
  • Sabarathnam- you are right about the huge problems of obesity- am glad Switch2Health is able to make a difference

Let me know if you have any other questions/ comments.
