Reproductive health

Here's a story about how one Changemaker is reviving ancient traditions by educating women in reproductive health:When it comes to reproductive health, the right approach for an independent working woman in the city is not going to work for an indigenous mother of five in a tightly knit rural village.  Diana Damien knows.  She has been developing strategies for teaching reproductive rights and improving reproductive health in Chiapas, Mexico, where for years, women’s health initiatives have failed.Read more about this solution, or discuss this topic below.

Reproductive health problems are for all women, but when it comes to our dear mothers in the villages it even becomes worse since they can not fight for their own rights the truth is they are not aware of them, cultural barriers, lack of male/family support all these complicates the situation.

Therefore independent working women in the city should not be the target but women at the grassroot should be brought on board by using various strategies.

UNHCO has over the last 10 years been involved with community participation and our theme for this year is mother and baby have a right to life and safety and various campaigns have been going on. On December 07,2009 within the Human Rights Week a match past and conference specifically focused on maternal health and so many other cases like a mother who died in Mityana due to the health worker negligence have been handled.

But vigourous community mobilisation through advocacy and lobbying should be the way to go i.e more community sensitisation, social and cultural women groups be brought on board, male involvement campaigns ,the use of reproductive health champion to promote the philosophy and more information, education and communication materials for increased awareness campaigns.

Also health workers as major partners in health care service delivery should not be ignored and the relationship should be streamlined between them and the community .In Uganda the Health Unit Management Commitees(HUMC) exist with an overall objective of bringing the gap between healthworkers and comminty.UNHCO uses this HUMC structure largely for feedback among others and community members are able to raise/ comment on diffenet issues affecting the health service delivery.

Policy and descion makers should always be held accountable by Civil society and other health related private partners .
