I wish to nominate The Beacon School teachers and students for developing Classroom Gardens to teach children that they may control how they eat. Students then took this concept home. Each homeroom was challenged to maintain a garden in front of their homerooms; and it was marvelous to see how they all rose to the occasion. Teachers and students chose to grow plants that were edible-herbs(parsley, rosemary, cilantro) and ground provisions(onions, potatoes, tomatoes). They also took a lot of care to make their areas ornamental and functional.
Reason:
It was glorious to see children with handicapping conditions handle this challenge. It is a misguided perception that special children cannot change or control their environments or their quality of life. These special children disproved this theory not only in their school environment but also in their homes and wherever they went into the community. They shared information with all persons who asked them about the significance of gardening. I think the teachers were delightfully surprised by how well the children handled this project. Initially, they considered growing something pretty, but the project developed into growing plants that are nutritional, will sustain life and the importance of sharing food and growing ideas with others.
