Wordcarta - Open Word Dictionary
What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?
Wordcarta aims to become one of these resources to help anyone have access on Word World Dictionary. Currently the dictionary has 203147 English words and definitions and more to come. It will have a dictionary for every country: e.g. de.wordcarta.org, nl.wordcarta.org, fr.wordcarta.org, es.wordcarta.org and so on.
Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?
Non-profit
Country your work focuses on
What will be the impact of your idea?
Generation to come will use Internet as a main resource for Education. The project is currently (not officially launched) in BETA with English version available (203147 words) and more to come, (Romanian version available with 300.000+ words and definitions - work in progress to integrate in the current database). Wordcarta is a very scalable project due to the fact it will have a version for every country, so the impact will be GLOBAL.
The innovation in this project is that everyone will be able to contribute and edit/add words and description in and from any language.
This project is important due to the fact it will be an Open Word Dictionary, an API will be available to be used in other dictionary websites and softwares. Imagine to have a website or software that will allow you to check words from any language.
Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?
Since this it will be an Open Word Dictionary project, everyone will be able to contribute.
When I was a kid, after returning from school with homework to do (on a daily base), at that time there was no internet to use and it was hard to look for resources and dictionaries. I want to work with EVERYONE to create a free, Open Word Dictionary available to everyone, everywhere.
A live demo (work on progress) of the project is here: http://www.wordcarta.org/
How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)
At this moment, I am stuck with the development of the CMS to be able to add new editors and scale the database with multiple country versions. The cost to make a CMS will be around 7-10K USD.

Please explain why your idea/project, is suited/perfect to using... 'media' ...to bring about A BETTER "WORLD"...the entire planet...? (More of a 'Personal' Natured Question) Thanks! a.
And yes, it may be obvious to some yet we'd like you to explore this in any way possible with added input from your fellow entrants: since the WORLD WILL be affected & influenced (& inspired?) by WordCarta, what makes it different than Wikipedia or other dictionaries which people can contribute to (edit), etc?
Wordcarta aims to be an Open Word Dictionary and not an Encyclopedia such as Wikipedia.
A while ago I saw a small documentary about the education in UK, they want to keep the fees high in order to maintain a so called "standard" but this it is not the way it should be, continuing so it will make education accessible to rich people only and education should be free to everyone.
I am a highly believer that education is the only thing we can use to eradicate world hunger and poverty, at this moment this project is more at the "idea" status than a "solution". I am completely aware this project can not be the only solution out there but definitively can be a very important resource for everyone.
To answer your question about "a better world" and what this means for me is that we live in communities and if we look at us better, we're only one community there living on a place we call "earth".
If I had to say why Wordcarta is suited to using "media" for a better world, well, media can not be there without tools and resources, it simply can't happen to have media without tools and resources. It can be a channel for education, access on free education. With a tool like this many things are possible in future, I am sure one day we will be able to communicate with "tools" as we communicate with a person. Try to imagine having a dictionary on your phone that will be able to translate in real time the question you were asked in a local shop in Italy or in United Arab Emirates. To make things possible first we need to create some resources to use when need it, most importantly we need to have these resources free for everyone, everywhere and at any moment.
Thank you and happy holidays!

GREAT CALL Robert~! REAL TIME TRANSLATION! Translation Reform leads to Education Reform! You've hit the nail on the head & driven it in in one shot.
~Picture the first UT (Universal Translator) like the one in STAR TREK~
Not so hard to believe that even in the idea stage, you have clearly seen through to the importance of LANGUAGE as/is a 'BEGINNING' to THE END of POVERTY/HUNGER.
~OWD UT: You're on your way to helping BILLIONS; why not get equally compensated~
A similar but augmented version of this idea passed through my mind not more than five days ago...i am SO HAPPY to see & hear your perspective/answer today!

How much crossover is there with your project and Wikipedia? I know Wikipedia doesn't do every word, but it addresses a lot of subjects in various dialects. Perhaps that is something to address either in your entry or when you make it to Miami. Best of luck!
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, Wordcarta is a dictionary.
I am focusing my energy and resources to make from this project a resource well known world wide. But I don't want to be about "me", I want this project to be a part of everyone. I hope I will be able to form an NGO for this project in order to transfer everything about Wordcarta one day.
I had a chat with someone from Wikipedia and they happily responded their willing to help with some English dump category but my issue at the moment is the CMS I need to build in order to manage the content for all the languages...
