Sparrow: A User-Aware Music Exercise System

Rhythmic auditory stimulation is a physical therapy technique that uses rhythm to entrain motor activity of an individual to encourage optimal efficiency, thereby facilitating the overall experience. The project merges this principle with digital media through a user-aware device and machine listening technology to create an automated music exercise system.

Name Your Project

Sparrow: A User-Aware Music Exercise System

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

Rhythmic auditory stimulation is a physical therapy technique that uses rhythm to entrain motor activity of an individual to encourage optimal efficiency, thereby facilitating the overall experience. The project merges this principle with digital media through a user-aware device and machine listening technology to create an automated music exercise system.

Will you launch your idea as a business or non-profit?

What will be the impact of your idea?

According to recent (2008) data collected by the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, only Colorado maintained an adult obesity prevalence below 20%. Childhood obesity follows a similarly disturbing trend, and hundreds of federal and state programs have been enacted to combat this growing epidemic.

Furthermore, due to population trends, the demographic of older and aging adults is larger than ever, and they are simultaneously one of the fastest increasing groups for purchasing gym memberships. The impact of the project may be especially profound for this demographic, as rhythmic auditory stimulation has been clinically proven as a viable rehabilitation technique for the elderly and individuals with neurologic trauma.

Concisely, this project targets three areas of potentially significant impact: first, the system aims to enhance the experience of various forms of aerobic exercise for individuals who are currently physically inactive, improving their overall health and well-being; second, continue to motivate already active individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle; finally, provide a system to assist older adults in the pursuit of sustained mobility with age.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

The vast majority of the idea has already been researched and developed, serving as the topic for my thesis project in fulfillment of my Master's degree at the University of Miami in Music Engineering Technology. As both an avid runner and engineer, I have spent the last 18 months developing and refining the concept and would love to see a project I have spent so much of my life on come to fruition. Above all else, I am thrilled at the prospect of developing a system that fuses music and technology has the potential to improve the quality of life for many.

A digital copy of my thesis document can be found on my personal website [http://ejhumphrey.com/?page_id=8].

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

Initial product development can be achieved at a relatively low cost (less than $25k) to acquire the appropriate computing technologies, fund continued user and usability studies, and prototype manufacturing. Part of this cost to launch will require securing business consultation services, to determine the true extent of widespread deployment, manufacturing, and web presence.
