The Global Human Media Network

JANERA curates global conversations. We plan to hold events on pressing global issues in different cities in the same time-frame, while streaming all the conversations online.

We innovate by engaging high-profile speakers in dialogue with regular citizens, combining online social media with offline communities, being content-centric and action-driven.

The Global Human Media Network

What is your idea? What makes it innovative? Why is it important?

JANERA curates global conversations. We plan to hold events on pressing global issues in different cities in the same time-frame, while streaming all the conversations online.
We innovate by engaging high-profile speakers in dialogue with regular citizens, combining online social media with offline communities, being content-centric and action-driven.

What will be the impact of your idea?

Through dialogue we make abstract global issues resonate emotionally with the audience, hence creating deeper awareness, understanding, and engagement. Our impact is to create a tight-knit action-oriented global human media network.

We will measure our outcome with connections made, events hosted, and actions taken by the members.

Our community is currently about 4,000, which will grow to 10,000 in 2010 and 500,000 in year five (2014). Simulcasting will scale the reach to thousands of viewers. In 2010 the total audience should be 900,000 and 7,500,000 by 2014.

To scale, we create tool-kits for local leaders to do-it-themselves, like a Tupperware party for global issues.

To measure impact, members will create an “activist” account where they can log their actions, e.g.:
- hosting an event = 500pts
- donating $100 = 100pts
- connecting to unknown community members = 80pts
We will give prizes to the most active members.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I will need local partners in the different cities with whom to organize events. I will also need an editor, event-planner, community manager, and tech officer.

I am from Curaçao, a culturally and racially diverse island where all the world’s different ethnic and religious groups co-exist peacefully (and have for centuries). I am multi-cultural, -racial, -lingual, and can fit in anywhere. I’m endlessly curious about other cultures.

I started college at Georgetown in DC, transferred to the London School of Economics to obtain a Bachelor’s in Economic Development, and obtained a Masters in Monetary Economics at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

I worked in finance in Amsterdam and Milan on cross-border M&A deals. In 2002, I attended Columbia University where I obtained a Masters in International Affairs and an MBA.

I have organized 20 events since I launched JANERA in 2007, and have a community of about 4,000 people. I’ve been bootstrapping, can allocate resources most efficiently and effectively, and am flexible, iterative, opportunistic, and tenacious.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

We plan to generate revenue through fees: event attendance, membership, and sponsorship. With a growing membership base, we will be able to charge higher sponsorship fees.

In 2010 we project $369,200 in revenue, and in 2011 $1,250,000. A detailed financial model is available. We need start-up capital and funding for our 2010 operating budget. By 2011 we will be fully revenue supported.
