*Y.C.* Save our Mothers!!!!

It is a rural community based project that will address maternal health in that cannot access adequate pre and post natal care services in their communities. This I hope will reduce the number of young girls and women that die as a result of pregnancy complicated issues. Midwives will be trained by health professional at the nearest hospitals and follow will be done by volunteers who will be trained as Peer Educators on sexuality education. Peer educators will act as monitors and those to take immediate actions like call the nearest midwive or take a female to the nearest hospital in any case of emergency.
Peer Education for young people will be done alongside the training for midwives to enhance the idea and make young people conscious of Reproductive Health issues in their communities. This community is the new community for displaced people in Bakassi. This community is really vulnearable because of the increase in teenage pregnancy and other issues arrising from their displaced situation.

Innovation

What makes your idea unique?

My idea is unique because it has never been done in any community in this local governement before and so many people have forgotten about the new displaced people. Most importanly I intend to make the community become very much invloued and claim ownership for it to run if and when I am not there.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Yes

Impact

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What impact have you had?

I have not had an impact yet because it is a proposed idea that i have discussed with some community members when I visited the area for a research and it was widely accepted.

Problem

Inadequate Access to pre and post natal services
Deaths as a result of pregnancy related infections
High Teenage pregnancy
Low and wrong information on sexuality issues
Wrong and low information on Reprodutive Health and Rights issues

Actions

I have discussed with community members to seek their opinion and coperation.
I have seeked the services close colleagues as volunteers as trainers for the Peer Education training
I have seeked the coporation of the Cross River State Ministry of Health who has assured me that the health Workers in the nearest comprehensive health facility will train the midwives.

Results

Low number of young girls getting pregnant
Increase consciousness and knowledge on Sexuality, Reprodutive Health and Rights issues.
Reduce the number of female deaths as a result of prgnancy related complications.

The Story

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?

I visted the community for a research and saw lots of young girls pregnant and deceided to go to ask the community Chief since he was the person providing answers to my question and he explained that girls and women were dying as a Youth activit and a facilitator on Reproductive Health and Rights I felt bad and deceided to do something to reduce the number of females dying in the commuity.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

The community is in abject poverty and if I can assist them with information and bring some form of health services to their door step I will be happy because I am not a big politician to offer them money to go and get Reproductive Health Services in the hospital.
