Geotourism project in Tibagi, Brazil
Location
The project Geotourism in Tibagi town, Brazil, provides high quality information about geology, geography and mining history, translated in easy words, to use in tourism structure. After basic research, the first step consisted of interpretative panels installed on main natural attractions, specific press material made (as 20.000 folders), short-courses done to local teachers, managers and tourism guides, and photo-expositions about the theme. We believe this idea has been able to change the directions of tourism in this small town and as main attributes are: the increase on general knowledge of the people; awakening of geoconservation conscience; increase of residents self-steem. All of the results allow the development of sustainable tourism in the region and strong possibilities to generate new jobs in a intelligent way.

Describe Your Idea
Innovation
What is the goal of your innovation?
To teach local community to use geological and geographic features as touristic products, enhancing the culture, economy and self-esteem of Tibagi population.
How does your approach support or embody geotourism?
The goal is to enhance people culture initially in a small universe as Tibagi town (18,000 inhabitants and an interesting geodiversity), about geoconservation, applying multiple actions. This kind of enhancement reflects on economy using geotourism structure and strategy. This experience has high potential to be cloned in other cities in the same region.
We made a detailed research about the geological and geographic context in the region and, we translated to a comprehensive words (in portuguese and english). Then we provided this contents in local panels, folders, internet and others. After this, we offered some short courses, teorethical and practice ones, to local teachers and tourism guides, to create efficient multipliers agents of the idea. Now, the idea can survive and evolute by itself in the city, with very few foreign suggestions.
Describe your approach in detail. How is it innovative?
The innovative feature of this project is to offer a very deep, and often unknown, environmental knowledge, as geology, history of mining extraction, geomorphology and geographic informations with easy words as potential touristic attractions. The earth culture has become a very interesting product to add in tourism strategy development. This program of conscientization changes ideas of local people and opens many doors to geoconservation with sustainability. Conceptually, this project is a new approach on places known by people and it can improve and even increase the attractions in the region, enhancing the economy. The knowledge about Earth can support the touristic sustainability and promoves the awakening of conscience of the community.
What types of partnerships or professional development would be most beneficial in spreading your innovation?
The partnership with local government and MINEROPAR (a government agency to development of geology and mining exploration in Paraná State) has been fundamental until the moment. We believe Tibagi region needs more education in this sense and to develop specific routes or programs to maximize the idea. Partnerships who offer correct touristic strategies and correct technical informations are welcome. As practice features more interpretative panels, more short-courses and more press-releases will be efficient.
Impact
In one sentence describe what kind of impact, change, or reform your approach is intended to achieve.
Special technical knowledges translated to simple words can be offered as a precious attraction in local tourism economy, creating new jobs and developing environmental conscience at same time.
Describe the degree of success of your approach to date. Clearly define how you measure quantitative and qualitative impact in terms of how your approach contributes to the sustainability or enhancement of local culture, environment, heritage, or aesthetics? How does your approach minimize negative impacts? 200 words or less
We were able to touch local government, teachers, touristic and similar managers, in a small town. Effects are visible now and is a matter of time to improve the conscience of all the population, because of the size of the town. Hotel owners proposed the installation of more panels, and new places were discovered by them. Places before in risk, as fossilian site, now are protected by own population and presently they are an important place to know. This project expanded the concept of natural heritage to managers in Tibagi town.
How does your program promote traveler enthusiasm, satisfaction, and engagement with the locale?
Tibagi town tries to develop its tourism economy based mainly in natural attractions, but in the last two years has had a great distinction in the region because of geotourism emphasis. High quality data offered in tourism turned visitors to partners to geoconservation cause and has led the population very proud of her nature.
Describe how your innovation helps travelers and local residents better understand the value of the area’s cultural and natural heritage, and educates them on local environmental issues. How do you motivate them to act responsibly in their future travel decisions?
Visitors and residents have access to geological/geographical information troughout seven interpretative panels plotted in main touristic points and/or using one of 20,000 folders published with map and all special context. Canyons, fossils, waterfalls and rupestrian paints are explained in easy words and readers can absorb them in different ways depending on their instruction. Geological time (millions of years), presented in the context as the main factor to bild the landscapes, contrasts with the human action time (some years or decades). Visitors and residents are induced to think about this different time scale and how human action can influence its landscape.
In what ways are local residents actively involved in your innovation, including participation and community input? How has the community responded to or benefited from your approach?
After interpretative panels have been installed and short-courses done, teachers and tourism guides use the informations available to transmit to others, mainly children and youngers in elementary and high school. Folders and press materials are offered in hotels, restaurants, museum and public spaces. Artisans association develop specially designed pieces with geological refuses from old diamond mining. We believe we have put the wheel on move.
This Entry is about (Issues)
Sustainability
Is your initiative financially and organizationally sustainable? If not, what is required to make it so? What is the potential demand for your innovation?
Untill now the financial support from MINEROPAR and local government has been enough to start the process. This is only the first step, and is the unique in preview. We believe it is worthwhile to intensify the implantation with next steps, mainly to give visibility and transform Tibagi town in example for replicate the process in other places.
How is your initiative currently financed? If available, provide information on your finances and organization that could help others. Please list: Annual budget, annual revenue generated, size of part-time, full-time and volunteer staff.
This step has been totally financed by MINEROPAR and, in small part by Tibagi town. The data about Tibagi region were achieved between 2006 and 2007 during a regional work in a big touristic program called Rota dos Tropeiros that involves 17 towns. So Tibagi is only the first one. This program costed about 30.000 dollars for the whole region, included some panels installed. Photographies and short courses were volunteers, so zero cost for Tibagi. In this time reports from local tourism bureau detected an increase in number of visitors and even new kinds of touristic event associated to geographic information diffused (as paragliding championship).
What is your plan to expand your approach? Please indicate where/how you would like to grow or enhance your innovation, or have others do so.
We find as next step to prepare many short courses in the region, to install more panels and some infra-structure, improve the small local museums with new data and create routes for geotourism. The town offers also the structure and possibility to create a special course for neighbours cities to diffuse this experience, also with local managers version. Tibagi can easily become the capital of geotourism in southern part of Brazil in few years.
What are the main barriers you encounter in managing, implementing, or replicating your innovation? What barriers keep your program from having greater impact?
The main barrier is cultural, more than economic. It was absolutely necessary create the favourable scenery into population and local government before the implant. After this, the plan walked pretty good. Of course it is also necessary now, after initial implantation, increase the actions, mainly to keep alive the idea with more courses to the population, to create new media for divulging and detailing the preliminar strategy. We believe Tibagi town is a good prototype and all right and wrong actions learned will be very useful to replicate in other places. A strong barrier now is spreading all is done and improving the program with new actions for maximize the impact.
The Story
Please provide a personal bio. Note this may be used in Changemakers' marketing material.
ANTONIO LICCARDO is geologist, teacher in Federal University of Paraná and nature photographer. He creates a website about geotourism in 2007 to diffuse the concept, his photos and to have some projects to work (www.geotourismbrazil.com). He has worked with the partner MINEROPAR, specially with a geologist, GIL PIEKARZ, responsible for geotourism/geoconservation development in Paraná since 2003.
Both have dedicated a lot of efforts, attention and experience to develop this idea in Tibagi, and after three years they are very proud of results.
What is the origin of your innovation? Tell your story.
We begin to work in geotourism as a way to diffuse geological knowledge. In 2005 we began the works on Rota dos Tropeiros, a touristic program that involves 17 towns with special history and geography, that at least reveals special geological conditions. Tibagi town attracts our attention among the others because is a small town with really strong intentions to participate in touristic economy. We began our geotourism project at the same moment they began to create some good infra-structure for tourism. We believe it was a magical moment to take the right way, offering the knowledge as the main product and developing a geoconservation conscience.
Please write an overview of your project. This text will appear when people scroll over the icon for your entry on the Google map located on the competition homepage.

We thank comments, even in other languages as portuguese, spanish, italian or french.
The project Geotourism in Tibagi town is very important for the development of sustainable tourism in Brazil. Congratulations for MINEROPAR (Agency to Development of Geology in Paraná, Brazil) and Federal University of Paraná in to start the process on the geoconservation.
Hello Alethéa
Thanks for your comment. I found very important the fact you touch in geoconservation point. At least, the main objective of this project is to turn people in geoconservation agents. The project proposes a local economy enhancement we believe will help a fast development of conscience.
Best wishes
Antonio Liccardo
Thank you, Marcos, about your words. Indeed we work in a different way to arrive in same objective: sustainable development of local communities. We used our tools for that, i.e. the geology and geography knowledge and its popularization. We believe this was the main point to participate in this Changemakers-challenge. Of course, as geologist,I trust this knowledge in comprehensive context is very important to make differences.
I hope you keep visiting our discussion and fell free to send us more comments.
Best wishes

Very interesting article, this area of southern Brazil has not only fantastic natural attractions including many geosites but also the privilege of easy access to the southeast of Brazil which is the main industrialized and developed region in the country.
By installing panels in the region, Mineropar is promoting geotourism as well as educating the local residents. In my opinion, the panels are vital for the local community as they are helping people to gain more information and consequently change their attitude towards tourism.
Congratulations for those involved in the project and hopefully the town of Tibagi will see a geotourism boom in a near future.
Thanks Alex for your words. You touch in a very important point for tourism: the logistic. Yes, Tibagi town is into the more developed part of Brazil, but social problems are incredibles. In this zone the agriculture is fantastic but almost totally mechanized and people have no jobs! The tourism way in development is the best option as job offering, but also to develop the environment conscience. Don't forget the great impact of agriculture on environment, and tourism activities, specially geotourism as we presented, have power to change the culture about environment's uses. We think in practical actions to tourism, but with this paradigma: original environment is better to business.
Ok... feel free to send us more comments.
Thank you again.

Tibagi diamond of Paraná.
E continua ainda a encantando e indagando turistas e visitantes.
Hello Karin.
You had been remember an important view to the success of this project. Rescue the local history show us the total interaction of human ocupation in Paraná and its geology/geography. The small Tibagi was an important place to paleolithic and neolithic cultures, evidenced by rupestrian paints; to spanish conquerors, first european arrived there, evidenced by old maps and old routes; to first portuguese settlers looking for gold and diamond; very important to first nature scientists coming in XIXth century, by they records; and finally important in this age because its revolutionary acceptation of this new way for tourism economy.
Your comment shows the close relationship between nature and history. Thanks a lot.
Antonio Liccardo
Congratulations for the project. Providing knowledge is a good way to begin changing lives but if you join knowledge and work... this is the formula of sustainable development- THE BEST way to change lives.
Once more, congratulations!!!
Hello Cristina
Thanks for your comment. That's exactly the idea we believe. Provide knowledge... always. Not only in tourism but in all sectors this is the key for changements. We are happy with your words because is good to know more people think the same.
Thank you again and feel free to write more times.
Best wishes

Hello Juliana
Thanks for write. When you speak in visiting seasons in tourism, of course he have summer and vacations as the mein period for tourism in all the Brazil. I believe that geotourism is a strong tool to minimize the impact of seasonality, because even in low seasons the knowledge is presented to another kind of visitor. Business people, professional voyagers or even school excursions will enjoy the contents offered in panels, folders, photo expositions and visiting the main points. As you say, this project can help strongly to reduce the dependence of season tourism in the place.
Thanks again, please feel free to write more when you want.

Thank you very much!

Hello Gil
I found interesting in your words the expression "who knows something take care about it", and I tried a free translation by english. I agree with you that if people know about their nature, they will take care of natural heritage. This is the soul of our proposition. Thank you to remember us!
Antonio
Hi Liccardo,
Sometimes we live in a region and don´t know enough to give this place the importance it really has to the environment and to ourselfs.
Tibagi, besides its historical heritage is a beautifull place for a project on Geotourism both by its nature and its geological structure.
Congratulations for your initiative.
Good luck
Paulo Delavigne
photographer
Hi Paulo. Thank you about your comment. Your vision is specially important for us, because I know you know the place with photographer eyes.
I believe we're able, in this project, to show geology/geography beauty in the photos. This is a conceptual difference, because amplify the power of pictures and capability of people to learn about.
Best wishes
Antonio
Congratulations for the city of Tibagi to be hosting such important project. I hope the local population be able to enjoy this amazing opportunity to increase and improve the quality of tourism in the region.
My especial regards to Prof. Liccardo and Mineropar for being taking the name of TIBAGI all over the world.

Hello Fabiana.
Thanks about your words. We are specially happy whith photographers comments, that's because their point of view are always accurated. The photography has a special role in our project. Our challenge is to show with beauty and knowledge commom landscapes. Even if not the case in Tibagi, we think photos can show different context in usual views and its reflect the geotourism idea very strongly.
As you are photographer I would like to gain this opportunity to invite you to know the photo exposition Geotourism in Tibagi, showed in "Casa da Cultura" of Tibagi, until april 28 or in presented in website www.geotourismbrazil.com.
Thank you again and you're always welcome to give some comments or oppinions.

I believe that the geoturism in Brazil is in the beginning of a reality which enormous potential for the sustainable development of many regions in the country. Regional initiatives like the Tibagi’s project must be seen as a first priority to contribute for the success of geoturism in Brazil as a whole. The geologist/photographer Antonio Liccardo and MINEROPAR are bridging the gap between geology and turism in Paraná, with a proposal that is environmental and cultural responsible, committed to conserving resources and respecting local sensibilities. This is the start for a comprehensive geoturism culture in Brazil.
Thanks Romano.
Geotourism culture is an important point to discuss. If we think in Brazil's size and enormous geodiversity, the geotourism culture is a question of identity. People live on geographic/geological context and to explore this knowledge is more than simple tourism, is a way to develop education and pride of residents. Thank you for comments and please, feel free to write us when you want.
Antonio
Congratulations for the beautiful work. I think the important point of your project is the strong possible to improve the local economy, in terms of jobs and new possibilities to generate local projects. I believe if you are able to enhance this point you have planted the main seeds. Good luck in future.
Nelson
Thank you Nelson. We really tried all the time to keep this point as target. The time of implementation is fundamental for many cases. But we cannot forget that when we speak about culture is not easy make changes so fast. If we offer a real possibility of make money with environment and social conscience, I think the assimilation is faster. We sincerely hope in Tibagi many people begin new enterprises around geotourism possibilities. Please, feel free to send us more comments.
Antonio
Rubens Nadalin
Hello Nadalin
Your point-of-view is interesting because you touch in beauty of geolgy as knowledge. Of course more people will be interest in geology and, if you think about new generations, there is a great potential to attract more future geologists among the visitors and population. This part of tourism or part of geology has showed a strong development in last years in Brazil and is very promiser to next times. We will gain this opportunity to invite you to write us more times if you want. Thank you
Antonio
Congratulations !!!
by,
Rosendo Nogueira Neto
Hello Rosendo.
Thank you for your words. This work is really long and not fast. But we think is necessary to begin and this step is ready. MINEROPAR's strategy began 2 years ago in Tibagi and we elect this town to be a prototype in this first stage. All the results present high reproductivity to other places and we believe visibility and marketing is necessary now to enhance the idea.
We hope supply your expects to the region, at least with the actions within our reach.
Best regards
Antonio
Hello Lili
Thank you for your kind words, but I must to say this project is fruit of many efforts, from Tibagi people, MINEROPAR agency and mainly Mr.Gil Piekarz, the responsible of geotourism development in Paraná. We work togheter since 2005 and Tibagi project is only a small part of a great strategy. We hope you're right when you say this project will be a big change for tourism purposes.
Thank you again.
Antonio
This project is quite interesting for local community and for tourists, as far as for the academic community too, because it has a criative form to comunicate geological/ geographical aspects in an interatively way. The project is able to communicates scientific information that, as a matter of fact, is dificult to understand. In such a way this project estimulates layman people curiosity and helps people to appreciate better the surroundings they are visiting or in which they live, and develop a positive attitude to conservation.
Leticia Nitsche - UFPR professor - Turismo - Curitiba/PR/Brazil
look a new version
Hello Luana. First of all is very important to say this is not my project, but a complex of actions managed by Mineropar Agency. Two people work directly on this case: Gil Piekarz, the responsible of geotourism development in Paraná and I, Antonio. Thank you for your kind words and the gemmology is a very good point you've touching. Tibagi town is traditional producer of diamonds, since 1754, and all the mining culture cumulated is offered now as touristic attraction. We believe this culture is also important to improve environment conscience. Thank you again
Antonio Liccardo
Thank you Marcos. I agree with you when you speak about to show natural resources to incentivate tourism. Of course we try to take beautiful pictures, because is easier to teach knowledge if the photo is nice. All of conscience's wakeness about environment can be used to economic/social purposes.
Please we gain the opportunity to invite you to write more times when you want.
Antonio
Hello Mr Cava.
As geologist I must to agree with you about the importance of geologic knowledge to environment management. Sometimes we can not only provide technical knowledges to beautiful landscapes, but also to use geologic/geographic data to create new attractions for tourism. Thank you for your words and feel free to write us when you want. Geological comments are highly welcoming.
Antonio Liccardo
Marlene
Hello Marlene
Thank you for your kind words. We're happy to know you like our proposition and you find media strategy important to this project. In fact, we participate in this competition mainly to difuse our actions and also to show that small actions can be strongly multiplied with divulgation. Indeed, we hope this example must be a model to other places.
Please, feel free to write us more times.
Antonio
Hi Katia
Your suggestion is very plausible, because in theory is easy to apply. I agree the insersion of local people in nature conservation units is absolutely necessary. Geologic/geographic knowledge is the basis to all projects that involve environment and, of course, the offer of this kind of data will upgrade the attraction in these units. An idea like yours must to be presented to main manager environment institutions, because I believe individual units cannot implant it alone.
Well...your idea is very interesting, we thank you very much and you welcome to participate in this discussion at any time.
Best regards
Antonio
I found them very informative, and as a tourist to the region, it adds value to the place. The panels are very big and easy to read. The plastic base used to print the panels are very strong and that will ensure it will withstand the weather for a long time.
Good to see them growing in numbers, and hopefully, in time to come, local people (not just tourists) will appreciate them even more.
Hello Tingsern.
Thank you for participate in our discussion. We found very interesting and curious your point-of-view about the phisical features of panels. Well... we have learned a lot of details each panel installed. In general we try to idealize the panel with maximum harmony into the touristic place, using correct materials considering constraints as visibility, aesthetic, language and even translation portuguese/english. Another strategy is the insertion of data from other places around, connecting the visitors to other panels. That's why we must to install more panels. The "cluster" of panels presents an optimized action, much better than a single one.
Be sure local people has appreciated the geotourism informations. They are very proud to know it and tell visitors about "special" geography/geology of their territory and many of them see this project as an opportunity to change the life.
Please send us more oppinions when you want and thank you again.
Antonio
Congratulations for its work Mr. Liccardo.
We are with you.
Hi Alberto
Thank you very much, but is not my merit. The results were caused by local people involvement and Mineropar agency's strategy. So, many people are responsible for the consequences (positive ones I hope!). Please feel free to write us more times.

Congratulations for this stimulant project, wich is going to associate the propagation fo environmental knowledge, the patrimony´s conservation and the economic, cultural and social development. The application of this kind of idea is very important on the communities that must keep under lock and key this geologic treasure, wich are not presently valorizated in Brazil because of the absence of conscience and knowledge. Congratulations!
Hi Yasmin
Thanks about your words. The knowledge become conscience when we speak about environment. Many factors contribute to conscience development, among them cultural and economic conditions. We believe this project touch these points and, even if small, may came true big changes. Geographic/geologic knowledge presents as positive point also the development of pride about the territory and environment. Thank you again and, please, feel free to write us at any time.

Existem exemplos atuais?
