This Entry is about (Issues)
What impact have you had?
Through this initiative we anticipate that the project if implemented in true spirit, it will bring awareness on importance maternal health issues. Will be able to form SHGs in every block of the district and will bring economic independence in thousands of households in the district of Kanpur (rural). Project will be able to make all the FRUs in the PHCs and CHCs functional by working hand in hand with the government. Will be able to ensure at least 80-90% institutional deliveries. Will be able to develop local leadership amongst women for advocacy and the capacities of the service providers in the district.
Problem
Our project addresses to increase couple protection rate to bring down the alarming fertility rate in the district; it proposes to address rural poverty by establishing SHGs of women and encouraging viable income generation activities through microfinance. It proposes to operationalize functioning of the FRUs with a view to institutionalize 80-90% deliveries. It proposes to develop local leadership amongst women so that they can take up maternal health issues in their hands. It focuses on developing capacities of local service providers such as TBAs, ANMs, and doctors. Last but not the least, it aims at strengthening First Referal Units (FRUs), which include fully functional OT, delivery room, blood storage facility, neonatal care corner, and bio waste management system.
Actions
Our society is trying to get some initial support to initialize implementation of the proposed project. Proposed project was developed and presented infront of the three high level members of College of Health & Human Sciences, Ohio University, Ohio, USA. Hence, technically it is a sound project. Meanwhile, our society is building a network with village panchayats, and officials at block levels.
Results
At the end of the project we propose to attain the following:
1. MCH services would be accessible to al l the villagers at PHCs/CHCs levels
2. Knowledge on MCH issues of the community will increase
3. Every block will have at least 100 SHGs comprising of 2000 women
4. At least 50% SHGs would be running economically viable micro enterprises
5. It will reduce prevalence of poverty in the district
6. All the SHGs will be operating depots and will make contraceptive accessible to all the eligible women of the district
7. Representative of each SHGs would be trained on advocacy and sustainability issue sof the project
8. Public health system will have better FRUs as they will get upgraded
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.
My organization is blessed to have a group of highly talented and educated youths. They only require proper funding for the project. Their capacities also need to be upgraded on issues of maternal health. It will require technical assistance from the state government, which we will manage. However, technical assistance from some specialized agency from India and abroad will go a long way to enthuse confidence in the local community. Trained manpower for the project would be challenge, but I am sure project would propose attractive pay package to attract the best people in the development sector.
What would prevent your project from being a success?
Inadequate and irregular funding, trained manpower might be an issue if attractive pay package is not offered. Non cooperation or little cooperation from the state government might affect some components of the project, but we do not foresee such situation in future.
How many people will your project serve annually?
More than 10,000
What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?
Less than $50
Does your project seek to have an impact on public policy?
Yes

Does your organization have a non-monetary partnerships with government?
Yes
Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.
Support of the Government in this initiative is critical as, it proposes to strengthen the public health system managed and run by the government. FRUs are critical places which have direct bearing on the MMR of the area. Bankers support would be critical to link the women SHGs and help them to get subsidies provided by the government. This project can not think of being success until unless it does not forge partnership with the local government institutions, NGOs and village panchayats.
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?
1. Adequate & regular funding
2. Trained manpower
3. Technical & monitoring support from a specialized agency
The Story
What was the defining moment that you led to this innovation?
Seeing my mother dying in front of my eyes due to profuse bleeding resulting due to prepartum hemorrhage. High MMR, IMR, rampant poverty, high density of population unemployment in the district motivated us to think on these lines to serve the humanity.
