Inovação
Por que a ideia é única e qual o diferencial em relação aos demais projetos do mesmo campo de atuação?
This is an unique space in Brazil to develop this type of work, which includes the preparation of pregnant women to labor, monitor the delivery and support new parents with information and emotional support, as well as stimulates interactions with other parents and the consumption of products that meet the sustainable development, warning about the dangers of the introduction of consumption-driven society values in early childhood.
The originality of this idea is its integral or holistic approach, recognizing that women's health care is center for family health, and therefore for society too, and that it is crucially dependent on the awareness and accountability of couples at the time of pregnancy and birth.
The spread of this idea in relation to other projects is the emphasis of the preparation of pregnant women and couples to target the transformation of values desired. The place of the child, family and the new woman is prepared over time with the support of professionals and families and other people who share their personal experiences.
Currently, the activities in space are the following:
Yoga and prenatal education for pregnant women
Yoga for mothers with baby
-Introduction to musical perception and prenatal singing
-Dance for pregnant women
-Massage for pregnant couples
-Shantala and reflexology for babies
-Workshops on babysling
-Meetings of pregnant women (biweekly)
-Meetings of mothers with baby (biweekly)
-Meetings of parents (men)
Care-psychology
Service-midwife
Follow-Doula
-Follow the home birth (team)
Course-Nonviolent Communication
-Cookery classes of organic
Course-use of medicinal plants

Impacto
This Entry is about (Issues)
Quais foram os impactos obtidos até o momento?
This space was created about a year and a half. During this period:
- About 300 families passed through the area Aoba, participating in activities or acquiring products
- 32 families who had dedicated pregnancy assistance. Most deliveries were natural births, and we observed a great recovery of mothers, and children capable enough to build their movements.
- A network of about 15 professionals was created, with enough room and freedom to develop activities to monitor pregnant women and couples with children. Besides, they multiplied and produced content and practices related to preparation of natural childbirth and active maternity.
- We started to monitor home birth in the cases of low risk pregnancy, with a team of midwives and doulas;
- Aoba appeared in news dedicated to the use of Babysling, both in a local newspaper and the TV News Hoje broadcasted on national television in early 2009
Problema
in Brazil the cesarean rates reached 85% in the general population and up to 97% in the high-income classes. These rates are far below the WHO recommendations. This year, the National Heath Agency launched a influential campaign to promote national childbirth. However, we do not believe this goal is feasible without an understanding of the socio-cultural factors that lead to this troubling scenario.
Our experience shows that women undergoing cesarean deliveries have lost understanding on how to give birth and raise their children, and they feel powerless while discussing this with physicians or institutions. Studies show that maternity in mammals is not transmitted genetically, but actually passes from generation to generation.
Besides, there is a lack of support to introduce motherhood and mothering process to young mothers. This is aggravated by the fear campaign propagated by physicians that treat pregnancy as a disease, something that is beyond the role of modern women, and the advocacy for "practical solutions".
Ações
- Creation of a physical space for women, with staff and support material and information;
- Organization of a group of women with fortnightly meetings on topics of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum;
- Organization of a group of mothers with babies up to 18 months with fortnightly meetings on topics of mother-child relationship and child development under a free psychomotor approach (Pickler);
- Establishment of a network of professionals and a workshop program for natural childbirth preparation, monitoring of home birth and postpartum assistance;
- Launched a partnership with the Copel Foundation to produce program targeting the client group, which aims to stimulate and prepare for natural childbirth. This project will begin in the second half of 2010.
- Selection and sale of products that contribute to raise children with conscious, approaching this through the ideas of sustainable development and green consumption (which does not separate parents from children).
- Built a website and an informational blog as a source of reference for pregnant women and mothers on the different themes of active motherhood and natural birth.
- Participation as a founding member of an association to encourage the use of babyslings
Resultados
- Cesarean surgery was reduced through the preparation aiming a natural birth;
- Reduced number of unnecessary medical procedures as a result of our approach to create awareness on pregnant women about the process they are going through;
- promotion of breastfeeding;
- reduced risk of postpartum depression;
- bonding between mothers and babies was improved
- increase women empowerment to take decisions in respect to their personal values;
- reduction on the isolation of women and social reinsertion of the mother through the promotion of regular meetings to exchange experiences and receive support from a local area network;
- prevention of child impaired psychomotor development through monitoring of mother-child relationship during the first year of life;
O que é essencial para que sua inovação seja bem sucedida nos próximos 3 anos?
It is essential that we increase awareness and make it accessible to more people.
We need to reduce our costs so that more people can participate and benefit. Financial support or incentives would be very welcome in order to invest in advertising and informational materials, as well as to finance our own infrastructure more appropriately.
Currently, we have good support from local media. In the future, we intend to be even more present in radio and television, supporting or participating in programs on the topics of pregnancy, women's health and child development.
Qual(is) seria(m) os obstáculos para a sua inovação?

We have partnerships with Justa Trama for the production of our wrapslings washable nappies made with organic cotton. Justa Trama brings together various associations of fair labor and solidarity economy. Our wrapslings are made by a group of about 25 low-income women in the outskirts of Porto Alegre, which teamed to create the Unidas Venceremos, an association that integrates Justa Trama.
We also have a partnership with Natural Fashion for the production of our mesh slings wrap, as well as bodies and toys for babies. All these products are made of organic, naturally-colored cotton. Natural Fsshion is composed of craftsmen and farmers in northeastern Brazil and operates under the ideas of fair labor and and family farming.
Given that, our goal is to make the values of our partners are communicated via our products to families that have access to them.
Quais são as três ações mais relevantes e necessárias para o crescimento da sua inovação ou organização?
(1) Launch of partnership with Copel Foundation
Copel Foundation is the seventh largest self-managed health plan organization in Brazil, bringing together more than 40,000 members. The space Aoba is closing a partnership with the company to offer advice and then operate a program of incentives and monitoring natural childbirth across the entire population of fertile women in their beneficiaries. Via meetings and lectures, this initiative enables a more individualized monitoring of pregnant women and mothers. The foundation's goal is to greatly reduce the number of cesarean procedures, following a determination conveyed by the National Health Agency. Another factor is that as self-managed plan, the Foundation has interest in prevention programs, as its group of beneficiaries does not vary and is formed mainly by staff. Thus, the reduction of cesarean procedures can greatly reduce costs to the health plan.
(2) Strengthening relationship with other plans through the association ASSEPAS:
ASSEPAS is formed by all self-managed health plans in Parana.
We have already initiated contact with the association to present our proposal for consulting and support for programs to promote natural birth to other, self-administered health plans in the region of Paraná.
(3) A financial investment with the objective of:
- Sponsor a communication campaign in order to make more people aware of the project;
- Produce informational materials, videos and supporting documents;
- Increase the number of professionals involved and the activities for pregnant women;

After 7 years living away from their parents and have lived moments of great intensity, the couple Mario and Luciana Lima began to experience a "crisis of values". Concerned about the future of their new family, they decided to make the world which they wanted their children to live in, and began a major change in their lives.
AOBA (in Tupi: "soft, full and involve, wrap") was create with the will of Mario & Luciana Lima to take care of your family and to share the experience of the birth of her two children with all parents who believe they can make the world better. He is father, artist and consultant, and she is a mother, psychologist and consultant. They lived seven years in Paris where she gave home birth to her first two children, Ruda and Serena.
In order to make this dream come true, they invested heavily in preparing themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. As her children was born, it became clear to her that every woman can find strength to give birth to their children, and that this energy is even bigger if she can count on support and protection of the father.
Even as two Brazilians working and studying abroad, they have never lost interest in everything that happened in the country. They were shocked with some findings such as the high rate of cesarean section, the medicalization of normal births, and the high levels of violence and substance abuse in childhood. That shock made the couple decide to bring back to their country some alternatives and possibilities for pregnancy and childbirth.
Because of their determination and of remarkable meeting with other parents and professionals who also share this ideal, they created SPACE AOBA to offer to assistance to young parents who are looking to live fully this critical moment that is part of our humanity.
For the home birth of his third son, Aysso, in Brazil, they organized a home birth service, which is now offered to the public in Curitiba.

I appreciate your idea and think it is very comprehensive. However, how would you address educating women and midwives about danger signs during pregnancy that require emergency obstetric care? Would you include that as a part of your program?
we do not work in a logic of emergency obstetric care. We believe in the physiologic process and work preparing the woman to be in touch with the sense both physiologically and psychologically. our belief that the argument of emergency is precisely what justifies the over-medicalization .
Anyway, the preparation offered by our service does not replace a pre-natal medical follow up.
For home births we have a protocol of care and follow a partograph.
Hi Luciana,
