The uniqueness of the idea rests upon the alliance of technology (wiki) with a burning issue: gender inequality. Gender equality has been recognised as both a fundamental human right and a driver for economic growth. It is only through understanding the reasons behind gender inequality that improvement can be made. And understanding means listening to other people's perspectives, whether local, regional or national. Wikigender addresses civil society as a whole, and relies on a participatory approach that allows sharing of information, data, ideas and solutions to this problem.

Since its creation at the occasion of International Women's Day 2008, Wikigender has grown exponentially: over 900 articles have been created, and there are over 800 resgistered users. As an example, in January 2010, Wikigender has received 12 199 total visits; in March, there were 18 356 total visits, and the number of visits continues to grow. Wikigender is also actively using social networking like Twitter and Facebook, and is receiving numerous messages of support. In an era of innovation and digital citizens, web 2.0 tools are taking on an increasingly important role, and wikigender is well placed to take part in this transformation of society through a gender equality lens.

- Creation of the wiki platform (technical implementation)
- Creation of initial gender equality-related content: data from the GID-DB, 124 country notes on gender equality, a calendar of events, etc.
- Promotion - contacted an array of organisations working in the same area, presentation of Wikigender at various events, daily use of social networking sites, etc.

- Year 1: The gender equality community grows, more articles are created, more active contributors and more returning visitors; the country notes are updated with other complementary data from various indeces
- Year 2: The community is still growing, Wikigender is used at local level as a training platform to empower women and raise legal awareness about women's rights
- Year 3: The community starts to upload their data through a data uploader, share data, create stories, analyse data and draw conclusions and propose solutions

We will need to partner with indices for gender equality to have well rounded country analysis on the wiki. Parnerships with media for podcasts and videos. IT partnerships for a robust database. Partnerships with NGOs on the ground who can upload their important updated into the wiki.

The idea of Wikigender came from a need to open up a bottom-up dialogue: in 2006, the OECD Development Centre has developed a GID-DB: Gender, Institutions and Development Database (http://bit.ly/aouIKs), a tool for researchers and policy makers to determine and analyse obstacles to women’s economic development. Its true innovation was the inclusion of institutional variables that range from intrahousehold behaviour to social norms. In Wikigender, there is a "statistics" part that allows direct access to data from the GID-DB, in the following categories: family code, social institutions, school enrollment, literacy rates, health, political empowerment, etc. By using the wiki technology, wikigender allows anyone to take part in the debate and contribute.
