Innovation

What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

One Voice to End Slavery is a creative awareness campaign/initiative that has become a network that mobilizes people into action.

Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?

OneVoiceToEndSlavery™ raises awareness of the global sex and labor slave trade. Through creative campaigns, one day learning events and intentional networking, we mobilize everyday people to join a new movement of abolitionists. OneVoice has developed partnerships with shelters around the world, financing their efforts to rehabilitate victims of sexual trafficking through these fundraising campaigns and events.

We believe that awareness, networking and mobilization are the catalysts to ending these injustices. Therefore, our goal is to establish hubs throughout the US to educate the young and old on the issues of modern-day slavery and how we can be a part of the solution.

We create multi-sensory learning experiences (e.g., film, creative environments, intentional conversations, participatory learning) for people to become more aware of the issue, develop networks, and mobilize through tangible acts of change. Learning includes topics such as: What is Human Trafficking? Possible signs of Trafficking, How to Report Trafficking, What Organizations are Making a Difference?, etc. Our current tour is called, "Sex and Chocolate: A 2 Hour Learning Forum About the World of the Sex Trade and Slavery on Cocoa Farms".

Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

We believe the greatest resource is to provide accurate information and tangible opportunities for involvement. Through our One Voice to End Slavery initiative and network, thousands are given the exposure to the reality of slavery along with practical ways for involvement. People are invited to be participants in the solution, even beyond fiscal giving.

How do you plan to grow your innovation?

Our ideas are already spreading quickly online and by word of mouth. We have also partnered with several other organizations on ideas. Many other organizations recognize us to be a creative hub of innovative ideas to address slavery (E.g., See www.thefreezeproject.com, a creative awareness campaign founded by me and a friend in collaboration with One Voice to End Slavery).

Do you have any existing partnerships, and if so, how do you create them?

We created many of our partnerships through the initial hosting of "Freedom Day" back in March of 2007. We gathered over 30 organizations, agencies, local task forces, law enforcement, filmmakers, healthcare professionals, and educators to host a day of awareness about slavery. Over 1,300 people participated in the day-long experience. We have partnered with groups including International Justice Mission, Free the Slaves, Not for Sale, Invisible Children, Nightlight Bangkok, CAST LA, Polaris Project, etc. Also, we are in partnership with the Tronie Foundation that opened up the first shelter for trafficking victims in the state of Washington (United States). We helped to facilitate the opening of the first Homes of Freedom (www.homesoffreedom.org). They have asked One Voice to End Slavery to be one of its main partners.

Impact

Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.

We have had the privilege of speaking in front of more than 10,000 people this past year during our travels to universities, youth rallies, churches, businesses, etc.

What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?

Our most practical barrier has been budget. Since we work hard in collaboration and finding ways to support other organizations, we are usually in need of finances to support our overall efforts.

How many people have you served or plan to serve?

As mentioned above, we have served through our awareness events more than 10,000 people this past year with numerous more unaccounted for online and word of mouth. We hope to at least double the impact in the next 18 months.

Directly

See above.

Indirectly

We hope to continue to multiply our influence by creatively using online campaigns and opportunities for networking and mobilization. We believe we have some great ideas and have already seen much success. We have a good size following on social networking sites like Facebook.

Please list any other measures of the impact of your innovation?

Many individuals and groups are now referencing us as a creative model for cause campaigning. In addition, the number of website links have lifted us up to be the first google search result for JustOne, whether in quotes or not.

Is there a policy intervention element to your innovation?

How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?

Our non-profit JustOne (www.just4one.org) finances our efforts along with private donorship.

If known, provide information on your finances and organization

Our projected annual budget is $125,000. We currently employ only one staff (Our President). There are 4-6 main individuals running the organization with numerous volunteers during special events and creation of initiatives.

What is the potential demand for your innovation?

We are already unable to meet the demands due to financial constraints. We are actually turning down some invitations because our finances are not able to facilitate them.

What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?

We are only 1.5 years old as an organization. Therefore, developing fiscal support and sustainability has become a natural challenge (not barrier) to our growth.

The Story

read more↑ hide↑ hide

What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.

One Voice to End Slavery was birthed out of a gathering of a few friends (5) from three different organizations in hopes of putting together Freedom Day. Our organization, JustOne, took the lead on the project which then led to the beginning of a great network and awareness campaign called One Voice to End Slavery. Our Freedom Day event communicated to many organizations the need to partner and co-exist for greater impact. An organization like JustOne is great in facilitating networks between organizations.

I love the branding of your website. Very appealing to youth and young professionals.

How does the general public engage with the issue after they are aware? How does the awareness result in creating change for those most in need?

Thanks for the note Natasha!

During our learning forums (current campaign is called Sex and Chocolate), we provide practical ways people can get involved (E.g., How to Identify Victims, How & Where to Report Suspicion, Developing Intelligent Purchasing, etc.). In addition, we support a shelter for Trafficking victims in the state of Washington. Furthermore, we refer people regularly to other organizations depending on the individual's interests and professional background.

I am from Portland and this is the first time I have heard about your organization. I was browsing through your website and I think that what you are doing and how you are doing it is fantastic! Your "Sex and Chocolate" campaign sounds very interesting. Do you post on your website when one of these events is taking place and where it will be taking place? Is there a cost to people who attend the various events? And I agree with Natasha above, the branding of your website really catches the readers eye and encourages them to search through your website. What is your team currently doing to overcome the financial challenges associated with being such a young company and a non-profit organization? I'll be looking for your name around Portland.

I am beyond inspired by this ministry that you and Greg have launched. I am a LPC graduate and currently minister (non-paid) at PDX4. You are having a great impact on so many people in making them aware of issues that have been swept under the carpet. I appreciate the many facets that JustOne tackles. Blessings to you and all that you are doing to make a huge impact in the world. I will continue to support you in prayer and do all that I can on a practical level as well. -Alia Escalante
