Name Your Project
Psycho-social Rehabilitation of Survivors of Human Trafficking
Describe Your Idea
Psycho-social interventions for the rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, using creative arts and self-development opportunities to improve self-worth and esteem
Innovation
What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?
Psycho-social interventions for the rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking, using creative arts and self-development opportunities to improve self-worth and esteem
Describe your innovation. What makes your idea unique and different than others doing work in the field?
The philosophy of intervention deviates from traditional counselling and psychiatric intervention models. Instead the focus is on bringing the victims out of their trauma through unconventional means by giving them the human touch- aimed at instilling a sense of self-worth in them. The modus operandi involves tools such as adventure sports, martial arts, yoga and meditation; community involvement including providing them with a joyful living atmosphere and communication with mainstream society; and arts like painting, sculpture, dance music and theatre. The mantra behind my efforts is to provide a sensitive yet joyful atmosphere full of life to enable them to come out and communicate their feelings without any inhibitions voluntarily.
Delivery Model: How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?
At Odanadi my intervention of Psycho-social therapies has shown remarkable result. For this task, many committed professionals from art fields are chosen and sensitized about the minds of the survivors. Based on the initial diagnosis and the interest of the residents different art forms are introduced. I would like to promote this model through my contacts, networks and professionals assistance in a more broader level.
How do you plan to grow your innovation?
The efforts toward replication of this model have commenced at the global and local levels. The efforts include networking with various other agencies involved in the activity at the national level; conducting workshops for various peer groups and opinion makers in the local societies; and participating the presenting papers at various global forums apart from initiating efforts at turning the focus toward the psycho-social aspect of the issue at every given opportunity. Simultaneously direct intervention through advocacy has commenced among those in the government and those running various institutions for trafficking victims. The media has also been galvanized as a apart of the effort by exposing journalists to the mind of the survivor. The Odanadi-UK founded by sensitized developmental persons has seriously considered my innovation for the promotion in a global level. I have been presenting my idea in national and international consultations and also convinced professionals and Government bodies for its implementation in their rehabilitation homes.
Do you have any existing partnerships, and if so, how do you create them?
I have been a part of many networks in grass-root, state, national and international arena. Many INGOs like UNIFEM, IOM, USAID, CAF have recognized Odanadi as their partner. I have been the convener of ATSEC-International for South India. As mentioned earlier I have been serving through bodies like HRD’s National Committee on Human Trafficking, state Committee Against Human Trafficking, NIPCED etc. Asia Society has given its Public Service Award considering the Innovative Model of Odanadi and sincerely working for the betterment of organisation’s growth. Very importantly on the grass root the Farmer’s Movement (KRRS), Dalit Movement (DSS) & Women Federations are supporting the cause of trafficked victims. As mentioned above Odanadi-UK has been formed by sensitized developmental persons in London as a support group of Odnaadi and for the promotion of its models and values.
Impact
Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact.
Setting a global trend in dealing with trafficking victims, my advocacy that effective rehabilitation is possible only if the situation is de-criminalised has succeeded.
What are the main barriers to creating or achieving your impact?
Rehabilitation is inevitable a lengthy process and mental health pivots the overall rehabilitation. Unfortunately, the professionals involved in the initial stage do not continue the program for their own reasons including social taboo and fear. Lack of co-ordination between government and NGOs is the major hurdle. Mental health is not considered as important factor by many. There is no proper substantial support system for the promotion of best practices.
How many people have you served or plan to serve?
This field has not been completed. (166 words or less)
Directly
Already as many as 650 survivors have been benefited by this intervention during the past 16 years
Indirectly
The model has gained momentum from recent years and many organizations and government bodies are redefining rehabilitation giving more importance to psycho-social intervention. Some of the residents has turned into professionals and conducting training, workshops for others in different parts of the country. Many professionals like psychologists, psychiatrists, artists, media persons etc. have been trained by Odanadi and the model has been replicated in a higher level reaching countless population through their work and media publicity.
Please list any other measures of the impact of your innovation?
At the national level, the model has secured me a place as the Karnataka member of the National Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking and National Study Panel on Child Abuse. At the local level, the model is being propagated through training and sensitization programmes at all levels. I have triggered a re-think of the rehab strategies in many homes run by both Government and NGOs; and succeeded in de- stigmatizing the victims among opinion makers.
Is there a policy intervention element to your innovation?
Certainly. I have been promoting this model through my contacts and official positions with a goal to modify rehabilitation policies at Central and State level. I have been striving to make psycho-social component as a major component in the whole rehabilitation process especially through government departments and programs. The policy makers, higher officials and developmental professionals are consulted in every stage and the model has been well accepted for further replication.
Exactly who are the beneficiaries of your innovation?
The Survivors of Human Trafficking, exploited women and children, children of sexually exploited, rape victims, mentally slow children are the direct beneficiaries whereas professionals, artists, organizations, policy makers are sensitized and made involved in the rehabilitation process.
This Entry is about (Issues)
Sustainability
How is your initiative financed (or how do you expect your initiative will be financed)?
I started my initiative with the local financial voluntary support. Gradually the model has attracted many organizations including UNFIEM, USAID, ASHA, CAF etc. I would like to make this initiative financed by Government program to reach wider population. If the International community recognizes this model for replication or supports me to take my vision forward, a sustainable result can be achieved.

What is the potential demand for your innovation?
The psycho-social intervention is gaining importance day by day. Organisation’s, Government bodies which are involved in rehabilitation are facing a major adjustment problem in their rehabilitation homes. Their main concern is to tackle the mental health issues like hopelessness, aggressiveness, non-co-operation, addictions, sexually imitations, sleeplessness, withdrawal syndromes etc. A model program is needed to make rehabilitation a success. Many professionals, artists and organizations are showing keen interest to know how the unconventional therapeutic system works on mental health
What are the main barriers to financial sustainability?
Fund raising for the rehabilitation of trafficking victims is a major concern. Many groups may not show continuous interest in funding since rehabilitation is a lengthy and not a time bound process. Till today mental health is not shown on the government programs. The professionals services are not compensated with a handsome remuneration because of lack of financial support and hence they skip off from the program quite often.
The Story
What is the origin of this innovation? Tell us your story.
Basically I hail from theatre background and I strongly believe mental health can be achieved not only through medical intervention but also with the help of art forms with therapeutic element. Stress and aggression, behavior problems, sexual signs and imitations, addictions, hopelessness can be definitely handle by instruments like martial arts, dance therapy, yoga and meditation, music, adventure sports and theatre. Initially I introduced dance therapy and the remarkable result motivated me to think of various other possibilities to address different kinds of mental health issues in rehabilitation. Martial arts is a fantastic therapy which easily addressing anger, violent and aggressive mind and self confidence. Paintings creates dreams and hopes and also require a full-fledged involvement. Dance controls body language, dress code and behavioral problems. The list goes on. Altogether I had found out a long back that these art forms certainly take the traumatized minds towards a joyful and hopeful living system and belief made me to move further.
