Innovation
What makes your idea unique?
We are touching the entire family unit and creating fun and excercise in ways that children would not usually like it.
Do you have a patent for this idea?
No
Impact
This Entry is about (Issues)
What impact have you had?
We have gotten our children excited about excercising on a regular basis. The children would come in after school with so much energy that we couldn't get them to calm down and do their homework. Excercising allows them to laugh and have fun after being in school all day and socialize with their friends before getting back to work. Our boys especially get to release all their pint up energy and focus.
Problem
Our biggest problem is having enough equipment to have every participate at the same time. We ususally have to break them up into groups. Also changing some of the equipment that we are using because they also get bored using the same things all the time. Because of limited funding when we make purchases we cant buy enough equipment for everyone to participate at the same time.
Actions
Development of written information documents for the children to take home and get their parents involved.
Results
Development of a cirriculum for children to take home to get their parents and siblings involved helps to get the family unit working together and excercising, documenting how many hours per week they do, setting goals, creating family fun and promting health and fitness.
What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.
1st year- Purchasing our own space- this would help us to grow. We are constantly having to turn children away because of space. If we had our space we would be able to grow our organization and increase participation by 150% over the next year.
2nd year- Funding to purchase small equipment such as jump ropes, light hand weights, balls, interactive games which promote team building and working together as a team.
3rd year- Funding will also help us to provide incentives for us provide gifts, awards to the children and their families for their participationa nd creating healthy competition.
What would prevent your project from being a success?
Losing space to operate. We have not been able to secure a location that is owned and operated by our organization which keeps us being able to grow. We are constantly turning children away because of space.
How many people will your project serve annually?
Fewer than 100
What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?
$1000 - 4000
Does your project seek to have an impact on public policy?
No

Does your organization have any non-monetary partnerships with government?
No
Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.
These types of partnerships are critical to the success of programs like ours that are small and don't receive alot of outside funding. We try to keep our cost low so that our parents are able to afford to send their children.
What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?
1st year- To purchase a place of our own which would allow us to grow. We are constantly turning people away because of space.
2nd year- Funding to purchase light weight equipment like jump ropes, hand weights, interactive games that promote team building.
3rd year- Funding to purchase gifts and incentives to help create healthy competition and award everyone for their participation.
The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?
Again we needed a way to keep the children in order but also provide an outlet to burn off energy. I was tired of being the made for 50 plus kids so "Killing two birds with one stone" was brought into the program now we can all clean up and get fit at the same time.
Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.
My name is De'Lonn Brown I am a single parent with two children I had to find an inexpensive way to work out. So I use this around the house to workout with my kids. We have always used this away to have fun while cleaning and doing chores, I call it "Killing two birds with one stone". As long as you are moving and know how use your muscles it is making a difference and burning calories.
