What makes your idea unique?

Brazil is a controversial country: It produces 127% of its nutritious needs, it is one of the largest exporters of foods, but at the same time it wastes 39 million kilos of food daily.
When we waste tons of foods, we contribute to the economical and social degradation of our country, harming the health of millions of people. When we change to a conscious consumption approach, we are doing the opposite and modifying the future, in the direction of a higher level of sustainability (growth along with economical development, better health, education and preservation of the environment).
There are only a few “urban harvest” initiatives for collection of foods.
The ONG Banco de Alimentos initiative generates a sustainable cycle: while surpluses from production and commerce are collected, the accumulation of organic garbage and the wastage of food distributed for consumption decreases, which will complement the food available to thousands of people in a situation of alimentary and social risk. This process favors the inclusion socially of these individuals by improvements in their health and stimulation of their psychomotor development. Besides this, besides achieving a balanced diet through prophylactic education and actions to the assisted communities, we support only institutions which organize programs of social inclusion.
However, these actions would be insufficient if the problem were not dealt with at its origin; in other words, minimizing the culture of waste and stimulating the end of prejudice in relation to the use of unconventional parts of foods such as peels, leaves, stalks and seeds. We believe that every human being is a co-creator of the reality and, therefore, it is up to each one of us to promote the change that we want to see in the world.
This is just one unique idea, but covers sustainability in various aspects involving questions of environmental, social, economical and nutritional responsibilities

What impact have you had?

Since February of 1999 to October of 2009, the ONG Banco de Alimentos avoided that 3.639.237,34 kilos of foods were throwned away by giving them to 51 registered institutions, what means that 22.136 people were benefited, complementing 34.982.903,00 meals through 7.024.687,00 services. We accomplished in 2009 the fourth event to Collection of Foods in partnership with the Group Sonda of Supermarkets. Since the year of 2006 to the present year, this campaign allowed us to collect 64.059,65 kilos of no perishable foods.
Thirty two campaigns for collection of foods were attained in 2008; in addition to 29 culinary workshops and lectures for the attended institutions. Moreover, we guided 33 trainees that accomplished 16 works of anthropometric assessments. For the general public we carried out 19 lectures and workshops in companies, universities and local Congresses. The project “Feeding Social Change” since 2007 realized 120 lectures and “Clowns´ Culinary Workshops” at 25 private schools in São Paulo city, collaborating for the social Consciousness-raising of 3.398 participant students.

Among other actions, to spread the concept which seeks the change of culture about waste in October 16th 2009 along with the celebration of International Day of Feeding, we created a new action to combat hunger and wastefulness, while stimulated the whole use of foods. In this solidary motion called “Whole Village: sustainable gastronomical experience” driven by ONG Banco de Alimentos and AGEAC (Bars and Restaurants of Vila Madalena Association), some bars and restaurants incorporated in their menus recipes that contain non conventional parts of fruits, vegetables and green vegetables.

Problem

Without any doubt we can say that Brazil is a controversial country. It has one of the largest GDPs and is considered one of the highest collector of taxes in the world. It is the 4th largest food producer in the world, manufacturing 126% of its nutritious needs. Out of this wealth, 26,3 million tons of foods are throwned away per year, what could feed up to 35 million Brazilians a month. About 35% of all of the vegetables that we produced has the garbage as it destiny, what means that one person produce 37 kilos of vegetable waste per year.
When we daily waste tons of foods, we contributed to the economical and social degradation of our country harming the health of millions of people, making these citizens suffer with the irrationality of this act.
We are the 6th country in the world with one of the largest malnutrition indexes. Seventy two millions Brazilians (39,8% of the population) live with alimentary unreliableness, what means the irregular and inconstant access to food at a proper quantity and quality, committing once again their health condition in several aspects: physical, mental and/or social.

Actions

To minimize the effects of hunger and to combat the wastefulness: We collect surpluses from production and commerce to distribute them to philanthropic institutions avoiding that this food end up in the trash.
To promote prophylactic acts to the assisted communities: we monthly promote culinary workshops for their representative to teach them to manipulate food and make full use of it, to consume it properly in order to avoid nutritional deviations. To the purpose of unite the academic world to the social demands, we manage an internship with Nutrition´ students who develop anthropometric assessments of the population assisted.
To infuse a culture change by expanding these activities as well as the information for the general public: through the project “Feeding Social Change”, we approach students enrolled in private schools to enlighten the responsibility of each other in building up the world, and show the importance of the preservation of life.

Results

Our goal is to increase the number of people who have access to food that is in good condition and in enough quantity for a healthy feeding. For such, we would like to raise the project of “Urban Harvest” in 10% a year, by way of adding up 5 more social institutions a year, totalizing 15 institutions in three years. These institutions are currently in our waiting list. By the enlargement of this first gesture we hence the awareness related to the non-waste of foods through the educational and prophylactic actions.
Regarding the expansion of our knowledge outside of the bounded areas of hunger, by the next three years we aim to enlarge in 30% the activities of the project “Feeding Social Change”. Along with projects in private schools, the courses and culinary workshops accomplished in our headquarters, we wish to contribute as a role model to enlighten the society to be conscious of its role in assembling the social progress.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

First Year: Once we are moving to a new headquarter; the new place will need to be remodel to guarantee the necessary infrastructure to allow the educational actions, such as the creation of an experimental kitchen, and the implementation of audio-visual resources to adapt an auditorium for our lectures. Still in the first year, to keep on with the “Urban Harvest” we ought renewal the fleet of vehicles as well as to increase the number of employees of the operational staff, who drive an average of 280 kilometers daily, what require a constant maintenance, besides the logistics barriers. To transport foods, all vehicles need thermal isolation and cooling system as proposed by ANVISA (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária) federal laws.
In the first couple years: We will need a wider range of financial donors, to be able to pay the working expenses with water, electricity, phone, internet, house rent among others.
In the second and third years: Reach out for more sponsors to educational projects like “Feeding Social Change”, for advertising, institutional material, events and marketing.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Therein, would be an obstacle if there is a reduction of the financial donors and foods, decrease of vehicles fleet, number of volunteers and of publishing donors as well as the media service among other supporters. Such obstacles would hinder the process of “Urban Harvest” and disable the demand of donations for all of the institutions or undergoing the amount of foods donated, becoming insufficient for all of the weekly provisions of the entities. The reduction of the financial donors and supporters would hinder the payment of inputs, employees and fuel, making this action unable to move on. The marketing contributors’ reduction would minimize our visibility, what would interfere even more in the expansion of our performance outside of the bounded areas of the hunger and in our attempt to change the culture about the wastefulness.
If we lose the partnerships we conquered along these years all at once. Without the donors of foods and financial donors, even though we could still operate, would be necessary to cut down some commodities and continue to do the work in minor scale.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

The social entities attended by the project complete the accomplished work, generating the insertion of those assisted. The congenerous organizations and other social organizations enable us to exchange information and experiences, allowing the enhancement of the work. These partnerships ally to the support and donation of services and products from institutions of the Second Sector allow us to execute the work, to publish and increase visibility to our actions and also to establish new partnerships, encouraging a culture change. Hence, they are significant partners to continue the project.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

All our actions are nourished by the education project "Feeding Social Change" as well as courses and lectures directed to the general public supplied in our head office. Its purpose is to try put an end to issues related to hunger right at its source, changing peoples mentality to work together and generate goodness for everyone, to promote peace and a non violence attitude in a social politic economical system that is more compatible with the idea of what a developed country should be.
To urge the project of "Urban Harvest", the prophylactic actions and education programs directed to the assisted communities and the courses and lectures, mentioned above, created the fundraise "9 You Can” to attain donors' of R$ 9,00 monthly to help feed a person with the 3 daily main meals during 1 month. According to Luciana Chinaglia Quintão, founder of “Ong Banco de Alimentos”, this campaign shows a tangible way that each Brazilian can make a difference and become an agent of changes, since we are responsible for the world we want for us. In the campaign we show that R$9,00 are equal to idle expenses, for instance, as many as 2 beers, a portion of fries, four soft drinks, six glasses of mineral water or a ice-cream pot, but it also can finance three daily meals for a person without resources during a month. We can not change the world, but we can change the way we act on it. The three actions mentioned before generates the sustainability of the organization and spread the concepts that can change a culture through action.

The Story

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

"My work began with my own experiences, from my way of life and observations. It all gave me the sense that we are responsible for everything that is around us. We are the ones that through our actions create the reality in our home, within our relationships, in our community, city, country, continent and also in our planet. We are all one and everything and everyone is related.
It is no longer just about me or you or someone else: it is humanity as a whole that we should think about. No one should restrain the responsibility to understand and act in the process of becoming a human as a whole, preserving nature and life. As I see it, we are at a turning point. It is time to be more conscious about this. As more the people become aware, the more we will give the world a chance to survive in peace into a save planet.
Nowadays, when you don’t have this perception, it means that you are conniving with it all: the destruction of mankind and of the nature we see every day. It is about making a choice, to choose to life.”
