Guiding nonprofits to use ICT tools to collect social impact data

Take Action

The Problem

Non-profits and social enterprises are under pressure to measure their performance and results. Many low cost, ICT-based tools already exist to help collect data on large scale and real-time basis. However, there isn't a central marketplace for organizations to access such tools and to understand their pros and cons that cater to specific needs.

The Solution

Based on Kopernik’s initial research, a compilation of available tools to measure social impact does not exist. Particularly given the rapid increase in low-cost data collection tools using ICT technology such as SMS, smartphone applications, and GPS, Kopernik thus sees a need to be filled by publishing a catalog of available tools to measure social impact. Kopernik is in a unique position to make a contribution in this area since the organization’s mission focuses on connecting breakthrough technologies with the people who need them the most.

Example

The catalog will feature key 'impact tracker tech' with instructions, requirements and user reviews so that non-profits and social enterprises can decide whether the tech caters to their needs. Examples of impact tracker tech include Frontline SMS, an award-winning, free, open source software that enables effective communications for communities in the developing world. Another example is GPS-enabled, data-communicating sensors that monitor the use of household items such as sanitation facilities, water filters, improved cookstoves, etc.

Impact

The real-time, large-scale information collected through impact tracker tech allows non-profits and social enterprises to raise the quality and accountability of projects by course correcting implementation plans and informing future strategies. This monitoring, evaluation, and learning function enables them to more efficiently and effectively bring impact to the poor and vulnerable groups that the organizations aim to serve.

Financial Sources

Sustainability Plan

The project is fully funded by a donor for a full year; additional funding will be secured if the project continues on to phase 2 that builds on the current project.

Marketplace

The Constituent Feedback App Store is the only other resource similar to the proposed project. While the Constituent Feedback App Store has a very broad mission covering governance, political activities, location-specific applications, etc. the proposed project has an approach that allows users to compare and contrast various tech options to fit their needs and also provides other user feedback to help decided whether to try using it or not.

Founding Story

In the world of international development, there are often criticisms and complaints regarding the lack of systems that allow organizations to effectively track, analyze, and compare non-financial data. This issue was echoed at the Impact Investing Forum held in Hong Kong in March 2013 that convened 400 members from 15 countries around the East and Southeast Asia region. This event led to the development of the project.
