Handasiyat is a virtual engineering company setup by experienced engineers aiming to offer engineering services for construction companies operating in the MENA region via customized remote platform. This will offer the opportunity for hundreds of Arab Female Engineers to use their qualifications.

Founded: 2012 Type: for profit

The Problem

*For countries suffering from lack of local engineers compared to their market size, employment need/cost are HIGH. *In crisis areas there are lots of opportunities in construction sector but unsafe situation deliver employment complexity *Cultural stigma in Arab region provide barriers to women preventing them from working outside which led to pause their qualifications, many go through their lives without considering that balance may exist.

The Solution

Many engineering tasks don't require the presence at the office, we aim to take advantage of this feature and built a customized Remote Platform to serve engineering purposes, which will reduce employment need & cost and solve part of employment complexity in crisis area. From the other hand, this technique will offer the opportunity for hundreds of Arab Female Engineers to use their qualifications by working from home remotely. Construction Field is characterized by its routine nature and systematic processes. Most of the emphasis is on innovating the technological aspect of the field, however less stress is placed on innovating the business process. We aim to use the INTERNET to conduct the bulk of our business.

Example

Culture of Arab region is full of cultural stigma, which provide barriers especially to women. Nevertheless, women in the region seek empowerment and continuous improvement, however they find it hard due to the notion that women are deemed to be financially dependent on others in their lives. We aim to address their need through our business model. Our female employees can make use of their qualifications, gain steady income while working flexibly around their roles as mothers and wives. It has been considered that women are duty bound to their households. Many go through all their lives without considering that balance may exist. Motherhood has become an-expiry date in terms of woman's career aspirations. We aim to challenge this notion.

Impact

When we first started we had a-small group of talented female engineers, who for the various aforementioned reasons did not have time for a-full-time office based job. Since the establishment we've executed 3 projects giving an-employment opportunity for 8 female engineers. This opportunity allowed them to make use of a-lot of their spare time in a-way in which they could also realize their independence. Moreover, because Handasiyat is considered as a community for Arab Female Engineers, we have been contacted by Halliburton Company for Oil & Gas -USA- and made an agreement with them to be there only resource for Arab Female Engineers for their open positions in the MENA Region. Handasiyat's idea grabbed the attention regionally and globally, Engineer Nermin Sa'd - the founder & the CEO- was nominated & honored on many major events for her idea, latest is being a finalist in GIST

Budget: $10,000 - $50,000

Sustainability Plan

We are a team of experienced engineer who worked for the past 12 years in Saudi Arabia, where we have built bridges of trust and had a good client base which we consider as our starting point to move on. We are using our services fees to grow up our new business, so we'll be able to build our own customized platform and be able to hire & train more female engineers. We are seeking for fund to speed up our steps and to move forward.

Marketplace

Because there are few Arabic businesses available to embark upon creating online platform catering for this type of business, we have few direct competitors such as Archi Maker, and Dyar Electronic Office. both based in Egypt. However, unlike both we have a-significant competitive advantage in terms of our virtual aspects, which enables our clients to interact with us and have constant access to our services. Plus the fact that being online and having already made contacts in our main area of focus, Saudi Arabia, we have the ability to easily access our clients physically should the need arise

Founding Story

I've worked as freelance Female engineer in Saudi Arabia for the past 12 years, since I was not allowed to work outside due to cultural stigmas in the country. I have built a very good base of clients and participated in many projects there virtually. When I come back to Jordan I wanted to keep working with my old clients so I've built a simple platform to interact with them virtually as before. I needed help so I've put a 7-words advertisement in the news paper:"Female Engineer required to work from home", within 7-days I got 700 CVs, this huge number of CVs within this period of time was a record and the spark that let me think of copying my own experience of working as a freelancer virtually on other female engineers who can't work out.
