Here is a story about how a member of the Changemakers community is making a difference for abused children in Thailand:

Every child deserves a safe and secure childhood, and in Thailand there’s an organization working to make this a possibility for hundreds of kids. Founded in 1993 by children’s rights pioneer, Montri Sinthawichai, the Child Protection Foundation is Thailand’s first community-based organization that shelters abused children and helps their families—including abusive parents—address the root causes of abuse.

Montri observed the tragic neglect and abuse among migrant worker’s children, who were often left unattended by parents struggling to maintain two or three jobs, leaving them vulnerable to sexual exploitation and drugs.

How does your innovation currently get kids (or how might it get kids) engaged in physical activity? How would your idea or project potentially be implemented during the school day?

In Bible, Jesus said, “You are the temple of God”. Hence, it is our duty to preserve and maintain our body and soul as pure health as He likes. Even diseases like diabetes will be eradicated in physical activities. We can prevent childhood obesity by physical exercises to maximum extent with proper expert’s(coach) advice.

Nowadays the basic structure of Education is based on the Studies only. They never give importance to physical activities in general. The obesity is developed mainly because of the parents. They play a vital role to grow an obesity child. Most of the obesity comes as hereditary. Few parents want their children to eat more and have good figure. Only in few schools, they teach extra curricular activities with studies.

Descreva Sua Ideia

What makes your idea unique?

The fact reveals that the street children in Bangladesh come to the cities with their parents in search of work. They come from extreme poverty ridden rural families and a significant portion of them are abandoned. More than 73% of street children are victims of physical and mental abuse (particularly girl children) and suffering from various degrees of malnutrition. Therefore, improving the mental health through Counsel and Network approach might be considered as an effective and unique model. By ensuring their proper physical and mental growth we can turn them into effective human resources.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

Não

Impacto

leia mais↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

What impact have you had?

The lessoned learned will impact positively on the government policy makers and different other stakeholders who occasionally implement development programs for this target group.

Problema

Street children in Bangladesh are overlooked by the policy makers whereas they are engaged in 49 different types of hazardous occupations such as garbage sorting (in bare hand), etc. which has life risk because they sort clinical wastes too. A portion of them are addicted and vulnerable to STDs and HIV/AIDS. On the contrary, usually they do not visit the clinics or government hospitals where they can get primary health care free of cost during their illnesses due to poverty, ignorance and shyness. The present socio-economic conditions make them mentally retarded even not to explore their rights and the opportunities around them. Thus, they make themselves an untouchable class in the society.

Actions

The following are the actions/steps:
a. Identify, contact and select the street children - The target group children will be identified from the city streets to find the right ones.

b. Bring in the office and organized them into groups for counseling – After selecting they will bring in the office and organized into groups (25 in each) to counsel in a proper way.

c. Prepare a module for counseling – A right based module will be prepared to counsel the children. Child psychological issues will be considered to wake up their mental development during the preparation of the module. and

d. Develop a network (including a charter) – After completion of counseling a network will be developed including the children. This network will be run through fixed rules and regulations (prepared jointly by the TG children and the NGO) by the children themselves under the supervision of the NGO, Unnayan Uddog.

Results

The measurable expected results are:

(a) The number of street children brought under the program – A total of 1000 street children will bring under the program.

(b) The number of children got counseling support on rights and mental health – 1000 street children will get extra vigor and strength, moral and physical support by the society.

(c) A network of the street children developed – This network will work to oversee the wellbeing of them.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

1st year

In the 1st year proper selection, counseling and building up the network are the key issues.

2nd year

In the 2nd year, close monitoring is important whether the network is running through depending on the Charter. It is also important to develop a fund to run the network. It may come from the contribution (may be very small) of the children or from the donors.

3rd year

In the 3rd year, follow up the activities of the network and make necessary revisions in the Charter (if necessary) to obtain the interest of the street children and the expansion of the network activities to accommodate the new children is important.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The following are the issues those may prevent the project being a success:

a. Wrong selection of the target group;
b. Lack of proper counseling;
c. Lack of preparing a good Charter.
d. Lack of monitoring.

How many people will your project serve annually?

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

During the implementation of a project titled ‘Child Labor Program’ for the street children with the funding support of the ILO, I observed that these children keeps themselves eliminate from the society and only counseling support can help them. On the other hand, scattered counseling can not bring any demonstrative effects. I had a very defining moment that leads me to develop the idea. Once I saw a minor street child (and his parent) is hesitating to go to a government hospital where he could get primary health care support free of cost. When I asked about their hesitation the parent replied me whether they treat a street child.

What makes your idea unique?

Domestic workers abuses and violation of human rights is not an obvious and visible problem. Indeed if they are considered as part of the family, the work is not considered as real work and if they do not speak up, they do not come to the attention of the general public. They work behind the closed doors of private homes.

These women have been subjected to conditions no less than contemporary slavery: less pay, poor working conditions, no rest or leisure. As a result of which these women feel insecure, non-assertive and submit themselves to their situations leading to exploitation at the workplace and undignified status in society.
This obviously affects greatly their mental health and their day to day life.

We work in a unique way as we work together towards this journey of dignity putting it in the hands of the domestic workers themselves. Empowered and aware they are trained as leaders and can stand up for their rights so that their violations are known of in order for them to be stopped.

We do not wish to stop domestic work, as the profession is a form of livelihood for these women. Ours is a rights-based approach. We aim at making civil society acknowledge the contribution of domestic workers to their quality of life and give them humanitarian regard. Our mission extends to working with government officials and labour ministries, to have them regard domestic workers as workers who contribute to the economy of the country and put in place proper statutes that will benefit them.

leia mais↑ ocultar↑ ocultar

What impact have you had?

Today domestic workers are not alone.
Our work has definitely brought about a strong solidarity among the women. The empowerment has squashed all feelings of insecurity and has replaced it with confidence.
They are fighting together as a movement for the recognition of their rights. They are now aware that they hold human rights as well as workers rights. They should be treated with dignity. Instead of feeling ill, abandoned and condemned to live a life of slavery they look up to hope. They believe in change if they work towards it together.
Trafficking has been reduced. Indeed we have created awareness amongst the public, the government and the authorities to stop trafficking. The phenomena severely affects peoples mental life. A sold child becomes isolated from the world and considers herself worthless as does a young women that has been sent forcibly to work in the city will have serious mental issues. They often consider that there is no way out and feel condemned to live a life of servitude.
Children have been sent back to school. It has been proven that children working in domestic work, that do not have any resting, learning or playing time develop mental problems and endure slow development.
We also provide crisis intervention, rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of abused or victimized domestic workers and child domestic workers while providing legal and medical assistance.
We have created shelter homes to welcome children and to bridge them from domestic work to school.
Public awareness is changing. Indeed the public is starting to become more aware of the situation of domestic workers and its seriousness. To denounce these abuses it is up a social responsibility that the public is starting to take.
We have also had an International impact as the ILO has decided to plan a convention on domestic work. The government of India asked the movement for information on domestic work in order to prepare it.

Problema

The primary problem is that domestic work is not recognized as work. The consequences of this are abuses, such as working long hours, treated inhumanly (sleeping on the floor and eating the scarce leftovers) and also physically and sexually abused. Much is demanded from them for not much in return. As they are isolated in private homes, no one comes to notice these abuses and they can last for long difficult period of time. They adopt an attitude of servitude and their mental health is severely affected as they live under stress and fear of their employer who has power over them.
Stigmatization of the work is very difficult to overcome.
There is also the problem of children domestic workers. Children are sometimes sold for this labour, are victims of trafficking or are simply given by the parents to earn extra income for the family. The idea that the employers are helping these children is a false one and is a difficult obstacle to overcome. These children are forced to reply to all the demands of the family, live under stress, do not get sufficient amount of food or sleep. Their childhood is lost and they therefore do not mentally develop normally.

Actions

The domestic workers are organized in groups. leaders are given training from personality development, through skills improvement and awareness of civic and social rights. Workshops and Health education programmes are conducted. This education builds up the confidence of domestic workers and the solidarity gives them security as women and workers. They support and reassure themselves, which helps them deal with mental issues easier. The feeling of support breaks their isolation so that they can really bring change to the situation of all domestic workers.
Children are rescued from domestic work situations. They are encouraged to return back to school. First they are placed in bridging school that accompanies them slowly in order to deal with the trauma they have often experienced. They are then followed up. Children enduring this trauma become silent and interiorize their pain and despair, this help shows them that they should not have been treated this way and that they can live a normal lifeThe parents are also encouraged to understand the importance of their children attending school.
We create awareness to the media and the government towards obtaining legal protection.

Results

The domestic workers will be empowered and stand up for their rights. They will build up in confidence and self esteem and no longer accept their rights to be violated and their employer to impress and intimate them so much.
They will demand for decent wage and decent conditions of work. Instead of being looked down upon, feeling scared, sad, condemned and worthless they will have an identity and a face. This psychological change will affect their lives in every way. Domestic workers now talk with their heads held high instead of turned down to the ground, they can now demand for a day off to which they are lawfully entitled too. They now realize their importance as human beings and as workers as their work is an indirect contribution to the economy and is essential for functioning of a household.
The children that are sent back to school will continue their mainstream education. This will stop the negative mental development that they would have gone through at young ages. They can start developing normally and have a childhood. Learning, playing and resting will allow them to have good mental health.
The public will be more aware and take action.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

For the project to be successful the domestic workers need to stay organized and keep holding regular meetings and attending the awareness and capacity building programmes. They need to keep hope in the movement as to spread the word and the work of the movement.

Much commitment and hard work on the behalf of the staff needs to be ongoing. Much effort and persistence is needed.

The employers have to be cooperative.

The government needs to pay attention to the issue.

The public needs to also take action when they see abuses occurring.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The problems of the public opinion and the view of the government needs to be changed or start changing or else they will continue to be an obstacle to the movement.

The government tends to ignore domestic workers taking the side of the employers for all vested reasons, (a hang-over of the age old feudal system); hence decisions pertaining to the welfare of domestic workers are generally sidelined or delayed. Trafficking for a long time has been considered only for rackets of prostitution and hence provisions of law have not included women, girls and children who are victims of trafficking for forced domestic labour. The problems with domestic workers especially live-in workers are sometimes hidden behind the doors of private households and non co-operative employers. Domestic workers have for a long time been looked down upon in Indian society. There is a resistance from middle-class decision makers against taking away cheap labour; hence the need to break this mindset and bring recognition of their worth to society.

The government needs to pay more attention to the issue by not providing legal protection of the domestic workers.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Since our issue has an universal impact we net work with other like minded organizations and NGOs both national and international level. The ILO is taking up this issue of Domestic workers in the ILC 2010. We lobby with the Government in state level and central level to bring to their notice the issues of domestic workers.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

Since 1984, time when the movement was created, it has expanded into 23 other states of the country and have organized over 23 million domestic workers all over India. We operate in 28 languages and have worked with women in slavery from the north, south, east and west of India: an amalgamation of language and culture but all striving to achieve recognition of their work and welfare options. Many of these women are from rural, tribal or ethnical groups and have migrated to urban cities for domestic work.
We work with domestic workers, who are live-in (stay and work full-time with the employers), part-time (stay at their own residence and work with two or more employers), migrant domestic workers (women who leave rural areas for urban cities) and look into the cases of child domestic workers. We will continue to grow, hoping that funds will follow, as well as the public opinion and the government's recognition.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Before 1978, only sporadic efforts were made to learn about the presence and plight of domestic workers in India. With a survey conducted by the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), their actual conditions came to the forefront with the survey reporting slavery-like conditions for domestic workers all over India. It was then on, that I began to work for women and children in domestic work. I started with the formation of small groups of domestic workers at Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, India. I was upset to hear about their situation and further angered by the attitudes of employers and society towards domestic workers. Society would consider domestic workers as a taboo group who were indebted to them, being lucky to have escaped poverty and able to live in the comfort of middle-class homes. But the stories revealed by domestic workers were a far cry from the truth. Domestic workers spoke of abuse, long hours of work with no time to rest and lack of food, sleep and pay.
I listened to their stories, recorded and read these back to the workers to secure authenticity. Through this process, comprehensive life histories were recorded, which were then processed and a social analysis undertaken. This exercise showcased the true condition of domestic workers as already reported in the first study in 1978. In 1984, the Bishops in tribal areas were concerned for the girls, women and children who were leaving villages for domestic work in towns. I was approached to help these people. That was the time I came to Mumbai and established the National Domestic Workers’ Movement in 1985. I felt that is was not enough to help them in the form of food, clothing and shelter but to empower them and help them fight for their rights and be given justice.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

She is a citizen of Belgium residing in India for over 30 years. She is from the congregation of the ICM sisters and is a Home Science graduate, ortho-psychologist and accupedist. She began her work with deaf children and then in 1966, she initiated the Indian Youth Student Movement. In 1985, she established the National Domestic Workers’ Movement. Here, she played an active role in securing recognition for domestic workers at the international level by the United Nations and the International Labour Organisation. UN went on to declare that domestic work is a contemporary form of slavery and ILO recognized children in domestic work as one of the worst form of child labour. She has been instrumental in lobbying with government officials in India to include children in domestic work in the Law that bans child labour.
We don’t give in; we don’t give up; We go ahead to make a difference in the life of domestic workers is the slogan of the social inventor, which is also the motivating factor of her collaborators in all level.

Rethinking Mental Health: Improving Comunity Wellbeing (Socio-economic Interface for violence Elimination).

A dysfunctional family breeds future poor mental health and the disturbed mind originates from some form of violence. To improve community wellbeing we must end domestic violence. But domestic violence cannot be eradicated without placing men at the forefront of protecting women from violence since men are its main perpetrators.

What makes your idea unique?

Several innovations exist in my idea.Firstly, it does not consider gender issues to be the commonly accepted concept:a women's issue. It is about men taking responsibility for their actions rather than women fighting for their rights.
Secondly,I (and my organization) hold that domestic violence is a behavior internalized in early childhood by the exposure of children to violence in a domestic context. We think that its removal in men requires psycho-social therapeutic approaches such as counselling and behavioral change methods rather than the currently predominant punitive measures alone.
Thirdly, the outcome of this approach is unitive rather than divisive for a couple.Male perpetrators of domestic violence do not return from prison angry and vengeful.Instead they get to understand their circumstances develop a true loving non-violent relationship with their spouses.
In addition men and women have found themselves closer to each other than ever before.Perhaps the most important novelty here is that many faces of domestic violence are addressed simultaneously. Hidden and less obvious forms of domestic violence, such as denial of sex and withdrawal of monetary support are confronted. It is an in-depth healing approach.
Because it is hard to attract men to join non-economic pursuits, the men end up in cooperatives, get socially integrated and are at the same time relevantly rehabilitated in their natural social environment rather than in correctional institutions that have little bearing to the sitz-in-leben in which they live.It is a new holistic methodology.

What impact have you had?

From a little known counselling program we are now overwhelmed by the public demand. We did not expect that we would receive so many clients a day; hundreds of phone calls. We did not know that our clientele would expand to cover all kinds of people with all kinds of problems: The childless couple, men living in dire poverty, the woman seeking help for her alcoholic husband, the couple that is looking for an answer to what makes them always fight, the sexually addicted husband, people who claim their homes are haunted by demons; the list is endless.when all was said is done,we encounter the everyday problems of families and communities at the very roots of community mental health.
Over the years we have from experience and study developed a workable and popular way of dealing with family issues by counselling.
Our work has gone beyond the borders of the country and continues to spread spontaneously from mouth to mouth.
More and more victims of domestic violence opt to come to us hoping to find a solution that will not force them to hand their violent husbands to the prisons. they do not want a divorce, they want a change in their spouses.
A wide section of the population is now involved: schools, faithbased groups, correctional institutions, women's organizations, human rights organizations, law enforcement and policy makers,Government and village comunities.Men are finally becoming part of the gender issues platform and taking their responsibility at all levels.

Problema

The main problem concerns is the elusive nature of domestic violence.Men return from prison sentences and continue to re-offend. Exposure of children to domestic violence creates future violent youth and adults. We wish to free society from this endless cycle of violence begetting violence. The world has not appreciated the power of peaceful non-violent forms of conflict resolution. We want to see an end to the death penalty, to ineffective punitive approaches to psychologically based problems.
In many parts of africa, the use of the cane in schools is still encouraged. where it is illegal, there are no measures to stop it completely. The effects of exposure to violence are little understood. Drug addicts, alcoholics, sex addicts, violent persons, all end up behind bars with little chances of true indepth healing. We question the current manner in which the roots of societal mental health are dealt with.Domestic violence happens in the most basic unit of society, the family, and is not different from a mini war.

Actions

We researched on why men are the main perpetrators of domestic violence. Results showed that most perpetrators had been exposed to domestic violence in their childhood. Local leaders help identify afflicted families and we offer marital counselling to both perpetrators and survivors. We rented an office, advertise in the media, get access to perpetrators in prison, get the police to identify more perpetrators and have lobbied the district Justice for counselling as a component of sentencing perpetrators. With the permission of the education office we address institutions on domestic violence.
We keep and study records of cases and counselling methods that worked or didnt work in specific cases. Our volunteers form peer pressure groups and work together in economically viable investments. Part of their profits help their victims and maintain our office and work. With a music band we march in streets and make peaceful demonstrations against brideprice during the 16 days of activism. We make referals of survivors and perpetrators to suitable programs and train men's counselors.

Results

More survivors are reporting abuse to our office and men in communities are becoming more sensitive to domestic violence. The presence of anti-violence groups of men incommunities keeps potential perpetrators in check.Women are feeling safer in the communities where we are present. We are receiving referals from all sectors of society, even by wives who fear court proceedings and dont want a divorce or loss of custody over their children.Men's cooperatives are springing up and poverty in families being alleviated. there is a clear decrease in the statistics of domestic violence.Ex-prisoners find easy to reach and attractive rehabilitation programs. We help re-integrate ex-perpetrators into new and productive lifestyles.Women's rights groups are finding it helpful to work with men.Gender issues are no longer solely a women's thing. There are now platforms for men and women to work together.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

In the first year, men's cooperatives will have to be economically viable to enable volunteers to work against domestic violenc while simultaneously sustaining their families.Part of the profits from their common income generating activities is essential for the self-sustenace of the project, our office and work.Investment funds for such common enterprises would have to come from the volunteers themselves as well as donations from goodwill and well wishers.Through awareness seminars financial appeals can be made from the communities themselves.
Such funds would be spent on social education, awareness and sensitisation on issues of domestic violence at all levels of society; seminars for schools, law enforcement, political and civil administrators,faith-based groups, cultural institutions, social organizations, legal and economic systems. The support of law enforcement, political and civil administration is vital for the change of attitudes towards and policies on domestic violence.
In the second year, with adequate funds, violent and abusive cultural, political and traditional systems would have to be challenged through social campaigns.Mens groups would have to actively support and complement womens' groups that work against domestic violence.
In the third year society would have to be involved in comprehensively rejecting all forms of exposure to violence in general(such as capial punishment and war) and domestic violence in particular. At the grass roots and national levels, legal systems that do not take the nature of male perpetrated violence into account would have to be denounced and ammended.Active change would need to occur at all levels of social and political structure.Laws would need to be enacted against any exposure of children to violence and especially domestic violence. The nature, causes and effects of domestic violence in relation to community mental health would need to be taught as a mundatory subject in schools, universities and other institutions of learning and government would have to include in her budget funding for psycho-socio economic enterprises such as counselling and recovery centers for violent people, sex and drug addicts, alcoholics, refugees and other victims of her own violence-sustaining and regenerating culture.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The quality, number and availability of domestic violence counselors determines the quality and degree of impact on mens attitudes. We would not succeed if we failed to fund the initial training of key personel. we would also fail if we did not penetrate the higher levels of social hierarchy since these effect changes in policy and laws and can use their financial and administrative advantage against us.
We would fail if we did not have income generating activities as these are essential for sustaining the commitment and involvement of men who will normally prioritise their need to earn a living for their families.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Networking with NGO's are important for the effective spread and implementation of our methodologies. Our link with organizations that work against domestic violence adds a multiplier effect to our overall impact on society. We are able to share notes on types of cases, improve on our approaches and together have a stronger voice to impact on public policy. we have benefited much from skills specific trainings carried out by partner organizations. It is also important for us to maintain a referal mechanism that takes care of persons who would more suitably be taken care of by other NGO's. Collaborations that lead to wider demonstrations such as occur on the 16 days of activism are critical for our success in impacting on the public.
Because our men generally earn a living for their families we have to be linked with businesses that mutually benefit the organization and the business communities. Economically viable investments need the expertise of businesses that have been involved before us.
Partnerships with government are critical for influencing changes in public policy and amendments of unjust laws. There is need to enforce discipline where perpetrators initially resent us.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

Firstly, we need to extensively change men's attitudes towards domestic violence and gender issues by making them responsible for protecting women against violence. This in turn requires widespread use of radio, newspaper articles and community seminars: thorough advertisement and publicity.
Secondly we must first have the men in our camp before we can do anything to them or get them to do anything for themselves. This requires attracting their interest and commitment by setting up attrative income generating projects for and with them, grouping them up in cooperative unions.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I noticed that one mentally disturbed lady spent much of her time apparently "caring for and consoling" another mentally ill lady. The "carer" made quicker progress and soon recovered. And then I experimented with other clients and deliberately got them to attend to people with similar problems. It soon became obvious that here was something important and unrecognized. Now I know it will take former male perpetrators of domestic violence to end domestic violence in other perpetrators. As an alcoholic I was subjected to many years of abuse at the hands of those who did not really understand chemical dependency.(dismisals, expulsions, humiliations, etc). I only began to recover at the hands of recovered alcoholics at the guesthouse, a treatment center in Rochester Mn, USA.Since then I have wanted to see other troubled persons get appropriate therapy and treatment.Punishment alone will not turn the violent perpetrator into a peace activist.

What impact have you had?

So far the community mental health is not developing at all, resulting in outburst of problems of people with mental health.

Problema

The Government is not paying attention to the rising problems in mental health. It never has organized public consultation to screen the needs and situation in the area and to see what the population things about the scope of the problem, main issues and main resolutions to the problems. This has resulted in increasing of the number of people with mental illness and their families having problems (societal, economic, health, discrimination, e.t.c)

4. To propose strategy and legal changes to advance the situation.

Results

1. Upgrading democratic process in the country
2. Advancing human rights of the vulnerable population

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

The defining moment was a few people escapes from the mental health hospitals which proved that they can not take appropriate care of these patients, and their families, crying for help, since they were not helped to care for their relatives in the community (safer) settings).

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

I am working as a lawyer for more than 20 years now in the area of health and social issues. I was one of the founders of the mental health reform in Macedonia. I have drafted and proposed to the Government the Law on mental health , which was adopted, but never implemented. I also wrote a book on mental health reform, aiming to raise awareness of the preventive role of law in mental health and to advance community mental health.

What makes your idea unique?

Partners in Prevention Education started as a demonstration project using the Community Development Model and Positive Youth Development Model. Our commitment to all of us "being on the street" allows for our therapists to gain a more holistic picture of the youths' experiences. We are dedicated to establising services that are culturally relevant and easily accessible to this population, with input constantly solicited from our stakeholders. We advocate for a shift, as described by William Lofquist, from a Service Culture to an Opportunity Culture. In this shift young people are seen as resources of and agents of change rather than merely consumers of services. Our youth help us identify the underlying conditions of sexual violence, gaps in services, program design and violence prevention engagement opportunities.

Do you have a patent for this idea?

What impact have you had?

Since our inception the development of our services has been based upon the input of stakeholders gathered during outreach, focus groups, support services and planning meetings. We believe in no barrier/low barrier access to services. We meet with youth and young adults where they are comfortable. We provide all our services with no fee.

Problema

In addition to the extreme poverty this population experiences, many of the youth are living with disabilities, are youth of color, and/or identify as LGBTQI. In addressing the root causes of violence in the lives of our population, we acknowledge our belief that such violence leads to homelessness or places people at risk of becoming homeless.

Actions

Weekly Violence Prevention meetings, bi-weekly outreach at a drop-in center, street outreach, therapy and advocacy services for at-risk and homeless youth and young adults, ages 12-30. Our youth and young adults were also part of a project whose result is the movie, "Downtowners." YaYa Media in Olympia also has video links to homeless issues to include, "My Life's Notice."

Results

Our weekly Violence Prevention meetings have 10-15 youth in attendance each week. We are currently serving 4-6 youth with our mental health services. Our young women's support group recommences the beginning of October. We hope to be supporting our Queer community with continuing art groups, focusing on processing the impact of hate crimes.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Continued funding from state, local, federal resources. We have two full-time staff and hope to add two part-time peer advocates. We have a robust budget, do to our focus on marginalized communities who age out of services or have barriers that prevent access to more traditional, mainstream youth services.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

Heavy budget cuts. Lack of youth involvement and participation.

How many people will your project serve annually?

101‐1.000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

Less than $50

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Partners in Prevention Education began in February 2004 as a demonstration project through the Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs. PiPE engages homeless and at-risk youth and young adults and community allies in defining underlying conditions of sexual violence, gaps in services, program design and violence prevention opportunities.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Through a community planning process, the original founders of PiPE were able to identify gaps in services, particularly as it applied to homeless and at-risk youth and young adults. These young people had either aged out of traditional services or reported that there were "strings" attached and needed people they could trust and also who could provide resources.
