PING has received the Partnership/Collective Action award from the Global Business Coalition Health (GBCHealth) Business Action on Health conference for our Disease Surveillance and Mapping Project that has identified nearly 100 potential outbreaks of malaria in the Chobe District of Botswana the past year and aided in limiting the potential for a serious disease outbreak. The winning Disease Surveillance and Mapping Project was the result of a public-private partnership between HP, Mascom, PING, CHAI, and the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Botswana to streamline data collection and analysis with the goal of improving the quality of disease surveillance. The Global Business Coalition Health Awards honor companies that "exemplify a spirit of innovation and dedication to outstanding achievements in global health."

PING also received one of the first four GAIN awards from the Global Adaptation Institute (GAIN), a non-profit organization guided by a vision of building resilience to climate change and other global forces as a key component to sustainable development. The prize was awarded for the Disease Surveillance and Mapping project as well, particularly for it’s innovative use of technology to support Botswana’s vulnerable health infrastructure.

Dintshang? (What's Happening?)

Dintshang is truly an innovative concept, combining a social networking site with a portal to connect youth to health services. Through Dintshang, which translates to “What’s Happening” in slang Setswana, youth can find local and international celebrity and entertainment news, but see it presented in a meaningful way, addressing topics like alcohol and drug abuse, sexual health, cultural issues and gender identity through posted stories. The Dintshang platform will include a website and mobile phone applications, where youth can speak freely on stigmatized topics that they face daily but have little opportunity to discuss. Open-ended questions, posted with each news story, will give youth the chance to interact, while survey questions will offer a snapshot of how participants feel about a topic, giving everyone a way to share their voice. The site will be moderated and users may opt to be anonymous. To further encourage participation, users will earn points every time they logon, comment and participate, earning them access to song downloads and ringtones.

After brining up sensitive topics, Dintshang takes the next step, presenting youth with a tool to find local health and support resources to deal with issues they are facing. A range of services (including health care, career counseling, relationship support, and help with drug or alcohol abuse) will be available and sorted by type and location, enabling youth to find help in a central site. Dintshang not only empowers youth to think critically about their own lives, but gives them a way to turn concern to action.

Youth know the kind of heated discussions that can take place over Facebook and Twitter and they also hear or read about a wide array of celebrity gossip about supposed “role models”. Where other organizations might see this behavior and think of it as a distraction from learning important life skills or even a reinforcement of negative messages, PING has chosen to combine these activities and explore their positive potential. With proper guidance and a connection to resources, these habits can be a starting point for behavior change. PING’s nature as youth-led organization has earned us a reputation for creating innovations that others lack the vision to realize.

PING has partnered with local telecommunications company Mascom and the Ministries of Health and Education. PING’s partnership with Mascom offers technological support and funding for SMS and data costs for the mobile phone platforms (Dintshang access will be free) and publicity. Collaboration with government ensures project sustainability and greater access to youth through schools and government projects than by simply working with non-profit partners. Dintshang will also offer advertising space to ensure long-term sustainability beyond donor funding and to involve local businesses looking to connect with youth while supporting a socially responsible cause. Organizationally, PING’s young staff will manage and run Dintshang for their peers, ensuring that the site stays relevant.

PING’s for-profit sister entity, Develo, was launched with the intent to make the most of these relationships, providing mobile applications for emerging markets that allow telecoms to provide value added services to both end users and local government Innovation in capacity building is built into our organizational activities, as PING runs a youth mentorship program and is beginning a club at the University of Botswana, both with the goal of connecting with the next generation of technology experts, helping them further their career training and offering the brightest positions as PING staff.

HIV epidemic in Botswana, among the highest in the world, has resulted in 32,254 vulnerable children reported in early 2013, an increase since 2008. Youth face an increased risk of violence, emotional distress and HIV due to widespread alcohol abuse, unemployment and a struggling education system. In Botswana, 38.9%, of the population is between ages 10 and 24, but while this population could contribute greatly to development, peace and security, they are not being met with sufficient support. National government has formally committed to providing services to provide youth with education, healthcare, nutrition, safety, psychosocial wellbeing and social protection but has signaled the importance of the working with stakeholders in and outside government to develop these support networks.

In the Dintshang project, PING has developed an online platform to engage youth ages 15-35 in frank discussions focusing on topics like love, relationships, sexuality, gender identity and disparities, societal norms, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (including HIV/AIDS), cultural issues and more. Topics will be presented using celebrity and entertainment content (both local and international) as the vehicle to drive interest and foster dialogue, often by asking provocative questions geared to bring up subjects that are rarely, if ever, taught. The platform will be accessible online and via smart or basic mobile phones, and through every modality participants will be will be able to both participate in frank discussions and access a location-based directory of support services.

Dintshang aims to provide a platform that disseminates information about HIV/AIDS, gender violence, cultural norms, healthy relationships, love, and other health- related information by relating to youth in Botswana in an entertainment-oriented manner, which will be shared virally through the Dintshang site and social media. Discussions begun on Dintshang will only be the first step toward enacting social change and initiative a broader discussion amongst youth themselves about the role these issues play in their lives. Objectives include: increase self efficacy to discuss and change relevant social and cultural structures, strengthen community structures and referral networks to meet youth’s needs and initiate exchanges between individuals of differing viewpoints and backgrounds.

Dintshang’s value lies in its fresh and innovative use of semi-traditional social media for a positive purpose. The interactive mobile and internet platforms that Dintshang employs are the perfect media for this kind of exchange. As Botswana has an estimated mobile phone penetration rate of 164%, engaging audiences through both basic and smart mobile phone and internet platforms ensures that nearly all Batswana will have a way to access Dintshang. In a country that is among the least densely populated in the world, Dintshang provides an important opportunity for youth to exchange ideas and interact with individuals far outside their community. Having a reliable source of health resources and a safe place to ask serious questions is valuable to users and would be new in Botswana.

Keletso, a 19-year old female living outside Lobatse, Botswana is a typical Dintshang customer. Keletso loves reading about Chris Brown and Rihanna’s tumultuous relationship and even though her boyfriend doesn’t physically abuse her, she feels like she and Rihanna are both trapped in relationships that are not good for them. Keletso wants to hear about local and international stars but feels like she would have to spend hours surfing the web, reading newspaper articles and listening to radio shows to do really be up to date. She has lived in the same town all her life, but has no idea about youth empowerment organizations or mental health services nearby. If she did, she would probably get her younger brother help because she thinks he is developing an unhealthy alcohol dependency.

Dintshang platforms' launch will coincide with traditional publicity, including the design and production of media such as flyers, billboards and posters, to be donated by our telecommunications partner, Mascom. In these early phases, Dintshang will also be promoted at local concerts and sports games, and through an independent Dintshang launch party with Yarona FM. Dintshang will target university campuses as a major part of outreach and promotion, and form partnerships with student organizations to spread the word through their networks. Dintshang will partially rely on users to share the site between themselves, both by word of mouth and through Dintshang’s Facebook and Twitter pages. These other sites will be big sources of new users once Dintshang has attracted a small following.

Before release, the Dintshang platforms will be subjected to consumer testing by local youth. PING hosted one customer development session to get feedback on how youth access health information, use the internet and what they thought of the site. As development completes, attention will shift to the site launch. PING will leverage partners like Mascom, local radio and television and government and publicize the site through print, social networks, and other media sources in order to attract users, culminating with a launch event at major universities in Gaborone, Botswana. PING will also form partnerships with local media to provide content on local celebrities, and train a blogger and moderator to find and post stories and discussion questions while monitoring site activity.

Our most notable peer is Young Africa Live, a website started by the Praekelt Foundation, that connects users to stories about HIV/AIDS and help lines where they can find referrals or support. PING believes that YAL, while similar, is not a competitor, as our tool is unique to Botswana, a market that we are very familiar with. Additionally, by adding mobile phone capabilities and location-based services, PING's platform is even more accessible to users, particularly youth. Dintshang has other seeming competitors in the social media space, like Twitter, Facebook and Tumbr, who it hopes to turn into collaborators by creating a Dintshang Facebook and Twitter page to re-direct traffic back to discussion on the Dintshang site.

PING’s major challenge is securing mid-term funding for our projects to sustain them until they can be funded and adopted by local government. To overcome this challenge, PING as branched to create a for-profit sister organization called Develo that utilizes lessons learned from working with technology in emerging markets. Develo, a for-profit, will generate revenue for PING, creating a synergy between the two arms. Currently, as projects are launching for both Develo and PING, the organization as a whole is struggling financially, making it difficult to secure adequate staff to sustain our projects in the short term. In light of current discussions with Ministry of Health, for-profit partners and others, PING believes that both will be able to carry out long-term plans.

PING relies on strong partnerships, expanding our hybrid operation model, working with local government and continuing to train local youth, ultimately creating a methodology for expansion that can be applied to various developing countries. PING aims to expand operations to 3 to 5 countries in the next 3 years. In each, PING’s youth mentorship program will be replicated and local offices will be 70% youth led, with an understanding that this will require us to grow thoughtfully and may take time to establish but will ultimately be the most sustainable as youth can grow within the organization as we transition to government funding.

In the short-term, PING is looking to launch and expand several products, including Dintshang. Additionally, PING hopes to expand the piloted malaria surveillance and mapping project with the support of the Ministry of Health and interested funding partners. PING is in talks with various branches of the MOH to discuss new projects as well. PING also hopes to solidify a partnership with a research institution to ensure that our projects are held to the highest monitoring and evaluation standards as we move forward. By the end of 2013, PING would like to see an expansion to Mozambique, where partnerships have already been forged with local partner organizations. At the same time, PING looks to see its for-profit arm, Develo, secure product funding and add to PING’s long-term sustainability.

Approximately 200 words left (1000 characters).To date, the Dintshang project has created buzz for PING as an organization and has many groups interested in collaborating. PING demonstrated Dintshang to the National AIDS Coordinating Committee and local youth organizations at the request of government agencies launching other youth-focused initiatives and received very positive feedback. The Ministry of Education and Skills Development, for example, expressed interest in helping train Dintshang moderators and bloggers using Botswana’s standardized Life Skills Framework, forging a new partnership for PING. Various organizations have shown interest in funding the project in the future as well, including some international donors. Current partners, such as Mascom and the Ministry of Health, have been in discussions to participate in the future of the Dintshang tool. In customer feedback sessions held with local youth, participants expressed interest in maintaining involvement as moderators and bloggers and were excited to share information about Dintshang’s launch with peers, already increasing Dintshang’s user base.

In order to access Dintshang discussion forums or resources, youth will have to register with their email address, age, gender, location and answer a few baseline monitoring and evaluation questions on their knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding accessing health and other services and about the issues discussed on Dintshang. As they use Dintshang, questions will be sent to users at timed intervals, monitoring changes in their awareness of and feelings toward these topics. PING will also be able to gather data on how users access Dintshang and how often they comment or participate. Questions can be modified and sent out over email, text message or through the site. These tools, along with comments posted, will be used to quantify social impact and measure progress.

A defining characteristic of Dintshang is that it is built to be specific to Botswana – it directs users to services based on location in country, provides the majority of celebrity news on local artists and issues and fills a purpose that no other platform in Botswana ever has. However, in a different location, particularly in a country where no service directory or health-focused discussion portal has been created, Dintshang could be easily adapted to fit the context. If Dintshang were to be applied outside Botswana, it would be important for PING to partner with local content providers, potential users and other stakeholders to ensure that the Dintshang product remains top quality for wherever it’s being applied.

In the next year, PING hopes to have 1,000 registered users on Dintshang. In the following six months, PING will have compiled sufficient data on these users to be able to produce a telling report on user responses to Dintshang, how users are interacting on the platforms and how exposure to the site is related to changes in opinions and service seeking behavior. Within the next two years, PING hopes to tailor Dintshang to youth in Mozambique and launch the site along with other PING projects as one of the first initiatives of PING Mozambique. After three years, PING strives to have expanded Dintshang to a total of 4 countries and have reached a total of 10,000 active users.

PING currently receives two types of funding. General organizational funding, typically from individual donors, is not tied to any deliverable or product and is used to support the organization as a whole. This funding is used in PING’s capacity building, staff transportation, office costs and costs of PING’s youth mentorship program. Other funding is deliverable based, such as our project with the University of Pennsylvania in Botswana where we build a specific system for them and provide monthly the technical support for an oral health telemedicine program.

Typically, project development and piloting is funded by private sector and government partners, but PING’s ultimate goal in design and creation is always to treat local government as the customer and push pilots nationally after a successful pilot conclusion. PING also relies heavily on in-kind donations from partners, including HP and Mascom, to keep project costs at a minimum when testing in the pilot phase. In working with these private sector partners, part of PING’s strategy is to put together a business case proving that their contributions are building demand for their services and creating new markets for their products in a socially responsible way. PING’s for-profit sister organization, Develo, will contribute 20% of its profits to support PING as well, as Develo will benefit from being created with social responsibility and market building in mind. PING is considering moving its deliverable-based, fee for service, projects funding to be managed under Develo in the future.

PING develops concepts for new health and technology solutions in partnership with interested development organizations or local governments. PING also seeks out contracts and funding opportunities to create solutions for Botswana government offices, local businesses and international organizations. PING brings in private sector partners early on to determine what they can donate in-kind and how this affects project costs. After technology and programmatic guidelines have been agreed upon, funding has been established and goals have been met, PING pilots its projects working closely with local government’s guidance and the support of local research institutions. At the end of a pilot. PING continues a local government partnership when projects go to tender, securing longer term funding.

PING seeks philanthropic support in a number of ways. First, PING’s philanthropic support includes individual donors who believe in the cause and foundations of the organization and support us because of our innovative business model and approach to health problems. Secondly, various PING receives support through the corporate social responsibility departments of some of our for-profit partners. This funding is not tied to any project, but to building capacity within the organization. Due to the recent economy, securing this type of unrestricted funding is becoming more difficult, creating an incentive for PING to diversify donors.

In the next 1 to 3 years, PING will seek to prove our products’ health and cost efficiency and push them to tender. In April of 2013 PING is beginning to take this project from pilot stage to national scale (coverage of 100% of all health districts) with the Botswana MOH, who will be funding most of the national scale up. For this project, health care workers utilized smartphones, donated by HP, to complete weekly disease reports, which could then be sent to the Ministry of Health and visualized on a web platform almost instantly. Not only is this project being expanded to 100% country coverage but it will be expanding to include MDR and XDR TB in phase one and we hope to eventually use it for reporting of all 17 notifiable diseases in Botswana.

PING is also looking to move forward with new initiatives. The Dintshang project has received attention from a wide range of potential funders. PING is also looking to raise social venture capitol and others in the impact investing space to help prove our business model, and has had discussions with potential partners like the Acumen Fund. As PING expands, we will continue to partner with for-profit organizations who can provide in-kind donations and technical support, particularly telecommunications companies who operate in multiple countries and can support us as we expand. Income shared with the for-profit Develo will also contribute to PING’s longer term funding sustainability.

TV Show for Teens by Teens

We are a group high school teens, members of Cambridge Community Services, City Links Program. City Links serves students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School who are recent immigrant youth and English language learners. City Links provides supervised internships, academic and language support, mentoring, career and college exploration, and leadership development.

Our idea is to create a TV show that educates teens in the Cambridge community about issues concerning teens. To teach teens about different cultures around the world and to provide entertainment for youth.

I am Head of Think Big Programmes at Telefonica, and in 2012 pilot launched Think Big School, a programme which is becoming operational in six European countries in 2013. My training is in marketing and PR, and I have worked on social programmes for Telefonica O2 since 2006. I supervise Think Big School managers across Europe and work closely with my team members at Think Big Europe to build Telefonica into a sustainable business with high social impact. The European team is currently working to finalise the details of an online engagement piece which will expand the impact of the Think Big School workshops.

I pioneer organizational change, and my key skills lie in open mindedness and ability to perceive and go with new trends, always delivering pieces of current relevancy to the highest standards. In 2006, in my role with the UK business O2, I launched It’s Your Community, a social investment programme which leveraged O2 brand power into social projects. In 2010 this project was turned into a larger operation: o2 Think Big, and rolled out across Europe. My astute inspirations and deep drive to make projects become a reality have enabled me to launch and grow phenomenal impactful programmes.

Europe lags behind in terms of digital education. A study by the European commission (4) demonstrates that young Europeans are not being equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in a modern day job market where these skills are ever more in demand. Neelie Kroes, EU Commissioner for Digital Agenda, December 2012: "The digital economy is growing seven times faster than the rest of the economy. If not for the digital economy then the EU would be in recession." To be employable in the future, our next generation urgently needs to be equipped with digital skills.

Our solution is an engaging programme which introduces young people to digital tools in a fun and entertaining manner, enabling them to use the building blocks of the web to interact with popular culture and foster their creative development. We want to make coding fun, and show young people how it can be relevant to real life by running interactive workshops on entrepreneurialism and website creation and then allowing young people to continue engaging online from their homes. A rapid uptake of digital skills will be fostered by the fact that coding provides a means to the end of interacting with personal hobbies and passion points like music, websites, online games and magazines.

It is innovative because a Telecommunications company collaborating with educators (schools and NGO JA YE) and digital experts (Mozilla Foundation) to create social impact and work digitally. It combines technology with popular culture and enterprise skills, creating a fun and rounded experience that is accessible to any young person. Rather than focusing simply on the consumption of content, it gives young people tools to become creators in a digital world.

At present we provide structured activities designed to introduce young people to coding with Mozilla’s online Thimble software. Business mentors coach them on famous entrepreneurs, help them come up with their own digital ideas, then assist them in using the Thimble tool to create their own website and pitch their enterprise idea online. We are currently developing new tools with Mozilla to further young people’s engagement through hacking popular culture: remixing and personalising web content (such as online magazines and Youtube videos) in a user friendly way, starting to build the web without realising they are doing it.

Microsoft, Google and IBM engage with digital literacy through social programmes. Microsoft is centred around structured courses in computer operation (for example using Microsoft word), while Google focuses on safeguarding children online. What these programmes don’t offer is a way for young people to learn not just how to navigate, but how to master and create the web. In addition, we are unique in the brand power and mass outreach that we are putting behind this programme to make it accessible to all young people, not just those with an interest in technology. No other programme so successfully integrates popular culture with digital skills.

In Spring 2012 I saw a piece of press coverage in The Guardian on the lack of opportunities for young people to learn how to code in a fun way. I was inspired to do something about it when, at a technology event in the Telefonica office a teacher mentioned how powerful our brand could be in providing a solution. Technology offers possibilities for young people to move faster and achieve more than ever before, but in order to become true digital creators they need to be equipped with the skills and understanding. It was our opportunity to marry a geeky skill with a mainstream brand, make it popular, and empower the next generation.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

In 2012 just over 700 young people have participated in our activities. Workshops were held in the UK, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany, at the end of which each young person walked away with a URL to a personal website created by them during the course of the day, and featuring their own enterprise idea. We are currently coordinating long-term impact measurement structures, designed to test on a yearly basis how many of these young people were then inspired to learn more coding or build websites, which will provide a more meaningful understanding of our true impact.

Qual é o impacto previsto nos próximos 1 a 3 anos?

In 2013 we plan to reach 7200 young people across Europe through our workshops, and in 2015 over 20,000 will be passing through Think Big School workshops. In addition to this we hope to reach far more young people through the online activities and tools we provide, and which we will back by a mass engagement marketing campaign.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

There could be a concern that it might remain a niche idea and not have lasting impact. This could happen if it did not scale and successfully reach the numbers of young people we plan to reach. A further concern is the public perception of o2 as an organisation, and whether we are perceived as the appropriate brand to be delivering this type of programme. We hope to overcome this by putting a mass marketing campaign behind the programme and becoming a brand leader in the digital field, thereby drawing attention to the opportunities we offer and winning the public’s trust.

Qual é o benefício ou valor que você está criando para o seu negócio?

By engaging business mentors with young people through the workshops we are bringing our people into contact with the way the next generation (our future customers) think and interact with digital tools, gaining insight into their needs. The mentors’ use of digital tools is in line with our own organisational transformation to become a more digital business. By aligning our social outreach with young people and digital skills we are benefitting the way our brand is perceived.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

We are funding the programme from our Think Big social outreach budget. We authorise a minimum number of volunteering hours per year for employees to participate. We run ‘Train the Trainer’ sessions to prepare trainers at each of our office locations to impart skills and understanding to the mentors running each workshop, thereby sharing the development we achieve through our partners JA YE and Mozilla with the organisation as a whole.

We have already attracted government funding for our existing social programmes: in 2012 we became a delivery partner for the National Citizen’s Service UK for Think Big youth programme. With Think Big School we will be looking to partner with other organisations and secure similar grants.

Internally we are partnered with our learning and development department, who develop content for our workshops and training manuals for our employees. For our online campaign we will partner with the marketing department to reach a truly mass market. Externally we partner with Junior Achievement Young Enterprise, an educational NGO with expertise in enterprise work with schools. Key to our success is also Mozilla, a non-profit organization that promotes openness, innovation and participation on the Internet, and provides us with the software tools to make learning code accessible.

Qual apoio interno você obteve para seu projeto? Que tipo de críticas você enfrentou?

We are operating in a very tough economic climate: the business has significant challenges and it can be tough to find support. We are constantly fighting for backing to roll out our programme and gain employee involvement, as many teams are under-resourced and find it difficult to spare employees. However, while it is tough we have support at the highest level of the company from backers who believe in the power of what we are doing, for example our global COO, Jose Maria Alvarez Pallete.

Help youth to determine their own future path. Nowadays, there are a lots of secondary school graduated students lost their direction in their next step of education which require them to choose their major to study. Most of them are unable to find the field that they interested in and also capable of.This is the problem that my idea is going to solve.

The solution is to start a web app which can guide and lead youth to find their own major in study. The web app will ask several questions to the user which will lead user steps closer to their interest. The web app has most of the tertiary education (major, field, subject) information. After user found their interested major in study, the web app can list all the institution/university that offer the major by location (or any other categories). Besides that, groups of users can discuss a particular major in forum section.

There are no much similar web app existed currently. Helping lost direction youth to find their future path is something more than innovative because it can help more innovative youth to use their innovative abilities in particular field.

A lost direction youth use our web app, answer simple and meaningful question that lead to his interest. After that list of major that user might capable in will be displayed to the user based on the result of questionnaire. After that, user can search and browse through relevant institution/ university by location or any others categories.Once they found their interested major and university, they can go to forum section to discuss with other experience user or contribute their own experience with others.

Sonia Manchanda is a graduate from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad She currently leads one of India’s largest integrated design practices, Idiom as a Principal Designer and Co-founder. Sonia has shared her passion for design thinking, its power to unlock business, her experience and potential to build future scenarios at several prestigious forums. The New School of Design at Parsons, NY, EPIC Ethnographers conclave in Tokyo and CII are some. She has also conceived and is the project director of the DREAM:IN project. This initiative has successfully been prototyped in India. DREAM:IN has been replicated in Brazil and is now a startup and super incubator with a global team.

Let us for a moment pause and reflect as to what else besides inflation, the rising dollar and inequality could be growing/ likely to grow at this precise moment?
Youth population for one is predicted to grow around the world and peak around 2035, creating an unprecedented youth demographic bulge.
The real issue here is to ascertain, whether the growth in the economy can keep pace with the growth in unemployment, in a growing young population.
Can existing systems/ opportunities for employment generation accommodate the growth in youth population?
DREAM:IN is designed to focus on the positive impact that they could bring to the table.

DREAM:IN is the convergence of seemingly opposing forces of growth and impact, business and design, investment and innovation, the real and the virtual, education and practice. An “inside-out” process methodology and system to change the basis of impact investing and value creation, from needs to dreams, from systems to self. On ground, DREAM:IN is a super incubator that actively seeks, sifts, selects, then shapes youth enterprise ideas into sustainable businesses. SELECT - DreamTeam - An in-house panel, evaluates, rates and shortlists meaningful YE dreams. DreamPanel - A combination of DREAM:IN Team along with entrepreneurs, professionals, academics in an expert panel after video conferencing, short listing and one to one interactions, select a set of Pre-entrepreneurs & emerging entrepreneurs to take to the next level. SHAPE- Dream Think-Tank - Dream Gurus, Dream Leaders, Dream Catalysts, Design Thinkers, Big Dreamers along with Global partners/ network work closely with YE to Create Scenarios, Plans and Prototypes. There are several differences between DREAM:IN and the above two mentioned examples. DREAM:IN seeks to create a pipeline of young entrepreneurs between (educational) institutions and industry. DREAM:IN also aims at reaching out to these young people directly, using the internet, by creating a platform (which could be the evolution of the social network, the imagination network) that allows anyone, anywhere to upload their dream and find ways and networks to help realise the same.

In emerging markets, where does design start from? How can we activate design and open innovation networks to fulfil dreams at a massive scale? How can we imaginatively move all sections of society and thus be equally, truly free? In conversations with the young village boy turned urban youth, and who now drives her car, Sonia Manchanda debated these issues and understood that while entrepreneurs had the resources and design firms like Idiom to fulfill their dreams, the common man...was not even dreaming! That felt very frustrating and Dream:in was born, where she channelled everything she had ever learned or dared. In the days, months and year after Dream:in was set in motion, there were many aha moments...like when a politician was inspired enough to suggest that we help wake up his community, which is 15% of India's population. Like when Bruce Nussbaum declared that there was millions of dollars of IP here. Many aha moments emphasised the importance of launching Dream:in a venture.

The first DREAM:IN journey ™ reached around 6000 people across India. Close to 3000 Dreams were recorded and 50 solutions (in the form of social ventures/scenarios) were created by DREAM:IN. A report containing the insights derived from this journey was also compiled. All this information has reached the planning commission of India. Over 800 people in the district of Tumkur have had their dreams recorded and over 50 farmers have already been engaged with. DREAM:IN is now working with a few farmers (and hopefully many more in the near future) out of Tumkur to help them become agripreneurs. The DREAM:IN Methodology has also become the basis for university level courses, leading to the DREAM:IN Global Academic Program, which was undertaken by 6 Brazilian universities, 2 masters level courses at Parsons, the New School for Design in New York and NICC in Bangalore.
The academic program also led to a 3 day Conclave in Sao Paolo in 2012, attended by hundreds of people.

Over the next few years, DREAM:IN aims at reaching out to thousands of youth (and/or independently) across India and in select regions across the world. With DREAM:IN Next Gen, over 10,000 young people across south India have already been reached out to. Hundreds of students have already been a part of the DREAM:IN Global Academic Program in Parson, NICC and 6 Brazilian universities. Going forward the Global Academic Program will be reaching China in 2013. Apart from this, there is no saying as to how many people will make use of the online platform (currently in Beta mode) that is being developed by DREAM:IN. It will connect a global network of mentors and advisers with youth and other dreamers that will log in from different parts of the planet.

DREAM:IN has executed operations quite successfully on ground till date, by running journeys and conclaves and engaging with thousands of people. Going forward, this entire process will soon be taken online, where people will have the opportunity to record their dreams and also work towards realising them on the DREAM:IN online platform. Moving forward, the only barrier that we foresee is that technology might be a challenge in the future, while DREAM:IN reaches a critical mass. The technology to match what we want to do might not be available at an affordable cost. In order to counter this, we are developing robust technology and doing all of this internally by using a combination of interaction designers and developers who are practitioners to develop the same internally.

The value that DREAM:IN is creating not just for our business but for others as well is – DREAM:IN is creating a pipeline of a whole new gen of start-ups and social projects which will in turn create a pipeline for design industry, the funding industry, Idiom and DREAM:IN itself. Typically funds have a ‘spray and pray’ approach where they invest in a number of companies hoping that a few might be successful. What DREAM:IN aims to do is really eliminate this ‘gamble’ by working with young entrepreneurs and start ups to ensure that they will be successful.

While DREAM:IN is now independent, and operated as a start up because of the funding put in by the founder dreamers on board, Sonia puts in her own time. There is also the Involvement of design directors and leads who are interested in learning from all this data, sharpening their skills by getting involved

Currently, a group of founder dreamers have pledged (some already have) to invest their personal money in to DREAM:IN the organisation. Apart from this a number of consultants and benefactors are working with DREAM:IN, and going forward they will play bigger roles as well as work (and have direct access to) with the start ups and entrepreneurs that will emerge from the DREAM:IN system. DREAM:IN has been structured to become a sustainable organisation with the DREAM:IN Portal also becoming a source of revenue generation.

A group of emminent people are on board as Advisors. DREAM:IN Tumkur was backed with the support of the National Innovation Council and is being funded by Manipal Foundation. DREAM:IN Next Gen has the support of over 75 higher educational institutions (and counting) across South India. Parsons in New York, 6 Brazilian Universities and NICC in Bangalore have undertaken the Global Academic Program until now. In 2013, 2 – 3 Chinese Universities will also be taking up the GAP.

The pilot project in 2011 was funded by Manipal University and Dr. Ranjan Pai, Future Group and Mr. Kishore Biyani and Idiom Design and Consulting. DREAM:IN as a start up will be funded by a number of Founder Dreamers.Some of the founder dreamers on board already are Mr. Bob Pattilo, Mr.Yunus Zia, Dr. Ranjan Pai, Mr. Prashanth Prakash and Mr. Kanwaljit Singh. There has also been Involvement and support of design directors and leads from Idiom.

Especially when some of them is in the hospital for a long time due to some disease. For many of them it is hard to experience the time spent in the walls of a hospital so we’ll try to do everything we can for young patients to make them feel much more better in the conditions of the hospital setting. We identified high cost of software and poor internet facilities as the major impediments to technology usage in the classroom. When people experience loss, the customary methods of bereavement are to participate in a "grief group" or see a therapist. In the project proposed here - Flower Power: Growing Hope in a Season of Change - the focus is upon empathic caregiving (growing and donating flowers to hospice patients and their families) during which therapeutic horticulture (adults) and therapeutic art (children and youth) are applied in a broad systems engaging approach to transitioning throught the loss.

(1) Grows flowers for donation to hospice patients and their families
(2) Provides the venue for those who have experienced a loss to grow through and beyond the loss
(3) Builds supportive, restorative relationships among diverse community members
(4) Establishes a creative, multidisciplinary, systems-engaging, sustainable model for bereavement
(5) Educates the community in the benefits of hospice
(6) Fosters community good will
(7) Engages all ages from children to adults
(8) Recruits volunteers
(9) Develops a unique and replicable model of therapeutic horticulture
10) Creates a social enterprise in which portions of Flower Power will be offered on a fee for service basis to other hospices; and, some flowers will be marketed in local gift shops.

Heartland Hopsice is a division of HCR-Manor care has, until now, used traditional grief workshops with its beravement patients. It also has not partnered in provision of these services. This is the standard approach to bereavement used by the majority of bereavement providers. Attendance and participation in these workshops has been very low. However, the October 2012 pilot project (called "Getting Potted") of Flower Power yielded an overwhelming interest and participation.

From growing flowers to producing colorful, hope-filled flowerpots and processing losses, Flower Power provides spaces, places, activities, methods and volunteer opportunities that engage and benefit communities as a whole.

Adults will grow flowers in donated greenhouse space. While growing these flowers, a bereavement facilitator/Master Gardener will facilitate both the growing process and the Appreciative Inquiry (therapeutic) conversations. The tactile, cognitive, emotive (multi-sensory), relational, and empathic engagement with people and flowers will yield individual and community benefits.

Children and youth will create art work to be incorporated into the flower pots used by the adults in growing and potting the flowers. Therapeutic art work is created in partnership with a nonprofit arts organization and an elementary school. The art work will be created under the guidance of art specialists and bereavement facilitators.

In each of these venues, a mixture of "bereaved" and "not bereaved" will work side by side in an empathetic investment and social bonding project.

When flowers are ready to donate, adult volunteers will deliver the flowers and pots to bereaved familiy members.

Flower Power becomes sustainable as it markets the processes and venues to other bereavement providers in the form of fee for service offerings. Also, a percentage of the flowers will be sold in gift shops to defray some project costs.

This writer applied similar processes and strategies to develop a very successful regional food security project: Shalom Farms.

Importantly, this writer firmly believes collaboration - not competition - will yield the greatest common good.

The architect (David Cooper) applies this model as a national catalyst, facilitator, trainer, and coach of Systems Thinking approaches that use Asset Based Community Development. Mr. Cooper has worked with communities in Richmond, VA; Los Angeles, CA; Grand Rapids, MI; Newburgh, NY; and LaGrange, GA with community leaders (residents) to develop locally led and resourced projects that contribute to holistic community wellbeing.

For Flower Power, Mr. Cooper simply saw that the traditional model of bereavement was not working; therefore, he applied entrepreneurial leadership within the traditional organizational structure to achieve intrapreneurial success.

Ten collaborating partner organizations and several bereaved family members formed the Guiding Group and collectively guide and resource Flower Power.

A delightful and productive pilot project (Getting Potted) was held in October 2012. The pilot was a success and resulted in an article in the City of Richmond Cooperative Extension newsletter.

Since Flower Power is not a formal business entity, the Bon Secours Foundation has agreed to serve as a fiscal agent until such time as Flower Power formally incorporates or establishes some other operating entity.

(4) Establish unique bereavement model. Measured by a completed year 1 plan.

(5) Educate participants in the benefits of hospice. Measured by participant pre and post evaluation forms.

(6) Foster community good will. Measured by participant evaluation forms.

(7) Multigenerational participation. Measured by participant evaluation forms and group session rosters.

(8) Market fee-for-service bereavement to hospices, hospitals, and orgs.

Hospices are required by Conditions of Participation to provide bereavement group services to all bereaved. Since Flower Power offers a unique blend of approaches, and will meet the requirements of Hospice Conditions of Participation, Flower Power can fulfill requirements and provide services in collaborative, cost-saving ways.

The local administrator of Heartland Hospice is supportive as long as Bereavement Coordinator, David Cooper, continues to meet corporate policies and procedures and accomplishes customary job tasks.

The holding company, Carlyle Group, for HCR-Manor Care - Heartland Hospice states in its brand that it supports collaborative and creative approaches.

Development Impact Bond

We plan on creating a new financial product called a development impact bond. This product with raise funds from various stakeholders of the bank and will be lent to a basket of SMEs at more affordable rates. SMEs will be contracted to hire one young person per USD 10,000 to help address exponentially rising young unemployment.

We are a team of recent graduates from Standard Chartered Bank, that are keen to make social change from within the organisation, Aziz Mahdi is currently working on a Chairman's initiative addressing youth unemployment. This project involves fund raising £100m to invest in small and medium sized businesses to stimulate hiring of young people. Adnan is a wholesale banking graduate currently working within our Strategic Client Coverage Group delivering innovative solutions to finance the bank's clients. As a team we decided to embark on a new journey to tackle youth unemployment through developing a new breed of financing products. Adnan has extensive knowledge of the Middle East, whilst Aziz has lead on charity projects in Zambia, Iraq and the UAE.

Given we are both near the inception of our careers, we possess a lot of energy and drive to create a new business stream within the bank in the form of a development impact bond. A Necessidade: Qual problema social ou ambiental você está tentando resolver?

Youth unemployment is currently crippling societies across the globe. In 2012 alone, 75 million youth were unemployed according to the office of national statistics. Businesses are not experiencing the desired growth trajectory to hire young people contributing to an exponential rise in the number of entry-level vacancies. Lending capital to small and medium sized businesses at more affordable rates through a development impact bond will help businesses grow and hire more human capital. This prolonged youth unemployment problem has led to a 6M decrease in workforce participation globally amongst people aged 16-24 and these numbers are due to worsen if the issue is not addressed at a scalable level.

Small and Medium sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford to borrow money from banks in a lot of emerging markets due to inflated interest rates. We are proposing issuing and arranging a development impact bond and raising USD 10M from high net worth clients, philanthropic investors and financial institutions. This money will be lent to a basket of SMEs in Tanzania at more affordable rates. Each company will be contracted to hire one young person for a minimum of one year per USD 10,000 borrowed. 1,000 young people will gain employment. At the end of the year the investors will receive a return from the interest charged and a supplementary return from a development bank based on the social outcome achieved to compensate for the low interest charged on the capital lent.

The development impact bond will link the wholesale bank, private bank and consumer bank together internally to raise the capital, lend the capital and issue the bond in the market. This financial instrument will bring public sector development banks and private sector banks together under one umbrella to achieve greater good. Linking both sectors together will encourage other banks to collaborate and address social needs through issuing development impact bonds.

In logical order, raise capital from named stakeholders. Lend the capital to SME clients requiring expansion of their business at more affordable rates e.g. market rate minus 4%. SME is contracted to hire a young person for a minimum of one year per USD 10,000 borrowed. The salary of the young person will be monitored via payroll services the bank offers to the SME. At the end of the tenor of the bond, investors receive the promised return generated by the interest charged on the loan and the supplementary return (4%) is paid by a development bank once the benefit of reducing youth unemployment is achieved at the end of the year. Each USD10M raised will employ 1,000 young people for a year. This can be replicated across any of the bank’s markets.

Development Impact Bonds have not yet been issued in the capital markets, they are still at an embryonic stage. However should the bank issue this bond and be imitated by our competitors, we would rely on the bank’s knowledge of emerging markets, deep relationship with development banks and extensive geographic footprint as the competitive advantage. Furthermore the bank has an extensive retail banking presence across our markets and therefore can lend money to small and medium size businesses in a prudential manner using existing risk management frameworks.

Aziz had an ‘aha!’ moment after realizing the impact of the current ‘Working for Youth’ fund he is working on. Speaking to a number of SME owners at a conference made him realize they were willing to hire young people; however could not expand their business do to expensive funding from banks. Aziz then decided to create a financial instrument that would raise money from the rich and offer to the poor in order to stimulate hiring of young people, GDP growth and macroeconomic benefits. He realized that public sector development banks would bear no risk until the promised social benefit was achieved and realised this would be an appealing proposition.

At present we are assessing the countries that have the highest demand for such a product and the relevant risks affiliated to lending to SMEs in specific emerging markets; however our preliminary analysis indicates we could certainly issue the bond in Asia, Africa and the Middle East using our local presence in the pertinent locations. For example at present there is USD 2 Trillion of untapped wealth amongst high net worth individuals in the Middle East alone, raising USD 10M should not be too ambitious.

We aim to issue one bond in year 1, two bonds in year two and three bonds in year three. If we issue the bond at the same value of USD 10M we will reach 6,000 young people, creating 6,000 jobs and lending the remaining capital (USD30M) as finance to expand businesses and achieve economic growth, stimulating the economy.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

SMEs may default on the loan and therefore the promised social benefit may not be achieved; meaning that investors will not received the total promised return. In this event a return would still be paid factoring in the loan impairment. We aim to prevent this from happening by exercising prudent judgment and leveraging our strong risk management framework.

Should the bank issue the bond on behalf of a development bank, the bank can charge an arranging fee for raising the funds and a documentation fee for creating the instrument. If the bank is issuing the bond on its own balance sheet, there is a lot of merit to be gained in terms of growing SME client base and strengthening the banks brand through undertaking social responsible activities. The bank may also commit its own capital and receive a return from the interest being charged.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

This initiative involves working across divisions internally to create the instrument, raise the capital and lend the capital. Through outsourcing each activity to the pertinent division, time efficiency will occur. Furthermore using local knowledge from the respective office will enable us to remain on point and address the specific need through tailoring the structure of the product.

Funding will be undertaken on a needs basis. The Debt Capital Markets team will assess the markets’ appetite to invest in the development impact bond. Should the bond be fully subscribed, the funds will be raised accordingly. Support will be provided both internally from the operations team and credit officers to ensure delivery of the product is effective and occurs efficiently.

Partnerships within the company involve the Private Bank, Consumer Bank and Wholesale Bank collaborating to achieve synergies. This product is very much on strategy with the one bank philosophy promoted internally. Externally this product involves private sector banks such as Standard Chartered to collaborate with development banks. This bond may act as a catalyst for future joint development initiatives.

A number of senior leaders within the bank have offered their support to us in the form of mentoring and advising. Furthermore, some have assisted in providing research on various countries and development banks that may be interested in working along side us to deliver the development impact bond.

Nestes, os participantes do Programa de Desenvolvimento de Talentos (PDT), são desafiados a levantar as problemáticas sociais que mais os incomodam e divididos em grupos de interesse, desenvolver projetos voluntários com potencial inovador e de impacto transformador.
Na edição 2012, os subprojetos dividiram-se nos seguintes grupos de interesse: combate a miséria, educação, acesso a cultura e incentivo ao esporte.
Os projetos visam o desenvolvimento social, levando benefícios às comunidades e instituições alvo, e profissional, proporcionando aos PDTs o trabalho em equipe, definindo escopo, estruturando ações, buscando parcerias e as executando em conjunto.
No final do ano e do programa PDT, os projetos são apresentados ao board da empresa durante a tradicional cerimônia de encerramento e formatura.

O Social Responsibility @ PDT promove conscientização e produz tranformação e engajamento nos participantes e colaboradores em geral.

O SR@PDT propõe-se como projeto diferenciado dos demais, estando dimensionado para tornar-se um dos caminhos para o desenvolvimento dentro da corporação, promovendo o casamento entre o desenvolvimento de nossa sociedade e os ideiais e valores da empresa.

História: Queremos saber mais sobre o momento de descoberta desta solução. Conte-nos um pouco a história sobre onde e quando o(s) fundador(res) vislumbrou(aram) o potencial desta solução para mudar o mundo:

Dois participantes do Programa de Desenvolvimento de Talentos da Siemens em 2012 procuraram o setor de Recursos Humanos propondo um projeto social com o qual pudessem enfrentar algumas das questões que os incomodavam, especialmente na cidade de São Paulo: a miséria e o descaso.
A responsável pelo programa logo aderiu à ideia e estruturou um evento no qual os próprios PDTs (nome dado aos participantes do programa) escolheriam campos de atuação baseado em seus interesses.
Cada trainee (programa interno de desenvolvimento posterior ao PDT) coordenaria um grupo, e cada grupo trabalharia dentro de um tema diferente.
Levantados os temas, definiu-se qual trainee coordenaria qual grupo em projetos de seis meses, apresentados na formatura do programa.
Os temas dos projetos foram Educação, Cultura, Esporte, Crianças e Desenvolvimento Social.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

O Social Responsibility @ PDT está em alta dentro da corporação.
São grandes as espectativas quanto ao aumento no número de voluntários, continuidade dos projetos do ano passado e ao alcance destes projetos dentro e fora da empresa.
A participação nesta iniciativa passou a ser vista com bons olhos pelo setor de Recursos Humanos em geral e grande parte dos gestores entende que a participação nestes projetos é um diferencial.
As comunidades que receberam os subprojetos esperam ansiosamente por novas ações e as instituições parceiras esperam oficializações de parcerias ainda maiores e duradouras.

Qual é o impacto previsto nos próximos 1 a 3 anos?

Pretende-se ampliar o alcance dos projetos vinculando-os não apenas ao nome, mas às soluções fornecidas pela Siemens como energia renovável, tratamento de água e consumo elétrico inteligente.
Desta forma, os projetos tornariam-se cada vez mais estratégicos para a corporação, poderiam tomar dimensões maiores beneficiando os executores, na medida em que se desenvolvem durante o planejamento e execução, e, principalmente, a sociedade, que receberá por parte da empresa ações inteligentes e inovadoras para seu desenvolvimento sustentável.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

Como principais barreiras, entendo que o possível desinteresse dos níveis mais altos e a elevada rotatividade dos participantes trazem o risco de ausência de continuidade nos projetos iniciados e desconexão entre uma edição e outra do Social Responsibility @ PDT.
Buscar uma estratégia forte de comunicação, parcerias fortes que se apliquem a interesses comuns e embasar tecnicamente a motivação do projeto e seus benefícios fazem parte da estratégia de mitigação dos riscos acima levantados.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

A divulgação dos projetos de 2012 tem levantado interesse de contribuição por parte dos colaboradores e unidades de negócio.
Foi incluída uma palestra sobre Sustentabilidade e Cidadania no início da grade de treinamentos do Programa de Desenvolvimento de Talentos, no mês de março, para gerar consciência e interesse pela participação.
Os projetos iniciarão no mês de junho, e as equipes receberão orientações e propostas firmes de parcerias que já se consolidaram na última edição, mas poderão se mobilizar na geração de novas fontes de conhecimento e recursos.

A ideia é contar com o apoio das unidades de negócio que possuem portfólio envolvido no projeto.
Existe também possibilidade de patrocínio interno vinculado ao plano de divulgação, que já está ocorrendo em redes sociais como twitter e facebook; nos jornais corporativos da Siemens Ltda, e poderão se estender a mídias hoje utilizadas pela empresa como websites, televisão e rádio.

Dentro da Siemens, contamos com grande contribuição por parte da divisão responsável por Sustentabilidade e Cidadania Coorporativa, que doou R$ 6.600,00 no último ano para execução dos projetos.
Contamos também com o apoio do setor de Recursos Humanos no incentivo de participação nesta iniciativa.
Externamente, temos parceria com a ONG Teto, através da qual construímos uma casa em uma comunidade indígena próximo as dependencias da Siemens, alem de escolas e albergues.

Qual apoio interno você obteve para seu projeto? Que tipo de críticas você enfrentou?

Internamente, tivemos apoio total do setor de RH, idealizador e coordenador dos projetos, além de grandes lideranças locais e heads de Business Units.
Outros, no entanto, criticaram o projeto afirmando que não gera lucros ou benefícios significativos, não recomendando aos seus PDTs a participação nos projetos.

I am a recent graduate and have been working for multinational banks in the last 4 years. Although I am still fresh to the financial services industry, I carry the strong belief that banks can do as much to finance the hopes and dreams of individuals as they do to support the capital needs of large corporations.

The combined Strategy and Corporate Development team where I work at Standard Chartered helps to shape the strategic agenda for our Bank and supports the bank’s management in indentifying new opportunities. Our team comprises 14 individuals from 8 countries with a diverse range of experiences spanning consulting, retail and corporate banking.

As a team, we work on projects that deal with the most important strategic priorities for the Bank, allowing us to see how issues and proposals fit within the overall intent of our global organization.

Our daily work requires us to synthesis research, conduct analysis and form objective judgments and conclusions – the basic skill sets that form the foundation for a successful intrapreneur. We continuously challenge the status quo within the Bank with our intellectual curiousity and problem solving skills, but also know the intricacies which make it tick. We have immense energy and passion to execute change and are always on the look out for new opportunities to live our Bank’s “Here for Good” brand promise which is about sticking by our customers and always doing the right thing.

Although more than 40% of the employed in Singapore have a university, diploma or professional qualification, there are many who fall through the cracks. For youths-at-risk in Singapore who come from disadvantaged family or social backgrounds, many of them find it hard to thrive in our country’s competitive school system that emphasis academic excellence. At the same time, most of them lack the avenues of financing to put themselves through private vocational institutions (such as culinary school or hairstyling academies) which are more expensive than traditional schools. Without such a qualification, they are often stuck in a cycle of menial part time employment or resort to misdemeanours despite having bigger hopes and dreams for themselves.

Standard Chartered Bank will facilitate the provision of interest free education loans to fund the private vocational qualifications of youths-at-risk in Singapore who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing their dreams and making meaningful changes to their lives. This will be financed partly through upfront capital from the Bank and partly through the Bank’s retail and corporate customers who are willing to forgo part of the interest on their deposit accounts or reward points on their credit cards. The Bank will also provide the option for our corporate and SME clients who participate in this donation programme to hire these youths as interns or employees at their discretion. The loans could be fully guaranteed by the Singapore government or a government linked organisation.

Although many banks have undertaken micro-finance initiatives, these loans tend to come with very high interest rates that need to be charged to cover potential loan defaults. Our solution is innovative as it not only makes use of the bank's core business model, but also leverages its retail and corporate customers to drive social change - and at the same time engages with a government linked organisation as a potential loan gaurantor.

The Bank will select a group of youths for this programme with the help of partners such as NGOs, social workers, child psychologists and residential homes. We envision an attachment period where the youths will need to demonstrate their responsibility and capabilities. By leveraging our expertise in online banking, we will establish an online platform where the profile and aspirations of different youths can be showcased to our customers. The Bank provides 50% of the initial funding of the loan. The other 50% will be provided by the Bank’s customers, who can chose to donate one month of interest on their deposit balances or the reward points on their credit cards through our online banking system. Our customers will be able to choose whom they wish to support through the online platform directly linked to their online banking accounts. Once the loan is fully funded, the full amount of the loan is then disbursed directly to the vocational institutions. The youth pays back the loan in instalments up to a maximum of 5 years post graduation. Should there be a default on the loan, the guarantor will step in to pay back the loan on the youths’ behalf. However, we expect the default rates to be low due to the stringent screening procedures and the availability of employment through our SME and corporate customers. The repaid loan then goes back to the funding pool for the provision of more loans in the future.

Unsecured education loans in the market are being offered by other banks at interest rates of 4-5% per annum, but require the applicant to have a minimum income of S$20,000 a year. This almost entirely precludes our target group of youth-at-risk who will not have any income. The Singapore government’s pension fund also provides education loans at an interest rate of 2.5%, but this is only available for a list of pre-approved institutions that do not include private vocational institutions.

I have been mentoring a teenager at a girls’ home, who wanted to become a chef but had to choose an engineering course at public school as she could not find ways to fund her culinary school diploma. Despite coming from a physically abusive family, she is mature beyond her years, consistently the top of her grade at school (despite being in a course she does not enjoy!) and working part time at a convenience store in order to save up for her dream of going to culinary school one day. I was truly inspired by her story and want to provide the platform that would be able to finance the dreams of many other gems like her. These youth may have been sidelined by our mainstream education system, but are more than able to achieve success in their own right if they are given the right resources and an opportunity to shine.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

Although this project has yet to be implemented, we estimate that this project has the ability to impact a large group of youth-at-risk, which encompasses youth who may have already been put into a residential home as well as others who may not be under the formal care of the state but are showing signs of delinquent behaviour. We have already received enthusiastic and positive response from the Bank’s leadership and believe that the project is timely given the Singapore government’s recently initiative to establish a whole-of-government committee on youth delinquency and crime that will focus on creating alternative pathways to success for these youth.

Qual é o impacto previsto nos próximos 1 a 3 anos?

Due to the nascent stage of the project, we aim to pilot it in the first year with 20 loans of S$5,000 each in order to observe the repayment characteristics of our youths. Assuming a 20% loan repayment each year given the 5 year repayment period as well as continued interest donations from our customers, 8 new loans can be disbursed in the second year and so on. If the response from the public and our customers is positive, we can easily expand the number of loans but we want to take a controlled approach in order to ensure quality assurance and low default rates over the quantity of loans disbursed.

A robust and objective selection process will need to be put in place to select youths for the programme to minimise the drop-out rate and delinquencies in repayment. We plan to solicit a panel of experts including child psychologists and social workers to undertake the selection and will also require strong character references.

A guarantor will also need to be sought out to back the loans. We envision that a government linked organisation would be a willing guarantor given this programme alleviates the burden of having to finance the full amount of school fees which they are already doing for youth placed under their care. For example, the Ministry of Social and Family Development in Singapore already sponsors vocational training fees for youth that come under their care.

Loans are the bread and butter of our bank’s business – this programme allows us to invest in youths who have demonstrated a commitment to their own futures but are excluded from traditional sources of financing. The beauty of the project lies in that it can be achieved through our core business model and by leveraging our vast customer network. This further enhances our “Here for Good” brand promise – we are here to finance our clients dreams and aspirations, whether big or small.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

We will leverage our bank’s physical assets such as our online banking platform and loan administration infrastructure that are already in place to support the programme. We aim to seek out volunteers from our team as well as the bank’s IT, deposits, personal lending, marketing and corporate affairs functions to work on the project on a pro bono basis. Our bank also has a dedicated sustainability team who would be able to provide input on the impact of the initiative. In order to raise awareness amongst our customers, we will tag the customer donation portion of this project onto our bank’s existing marketing events and campaigns for new products that we do frequently through press releases and in our branches.

Our bank will fund the initial 50% capital requirement for the loans and the other 50% would come from interest donations from our depositors as well as credit card reward points from our customers. We expect donations from our customers to be a sustainable source of funding as the bank acquires new deposit and credit card customers. Once the loans are repaid, funding is then recycled and can be disbursed as new loans.

Within the organization, we will need to partner with our deposit and loan product heads to refine the funding and loan disbursement model. Strong support from our Singapore retail banking team will be necessary to build a successful marketing campaign to excite our customers. Our SME and corporate banking teams would need to reach out to our clients to seek out sponsors willing to provide our youths with job opportunities. An external gaurantor will also be crucial.

Our global head of retail deposits is excited about the idea and believes it is sustainable, and that our customers would likely be receptive to the interest donation scheme. We have also spoken with an external youth charity organisation who believes that there will be sufficient interest from potential guarantors but raised concerns regarding the selection process to identify truly motivated youths as well as the ways to mitigate the risk of drop outs

The unemployment rate in Tataouine is over 50%. This means every second person is unemployed - and that often already for a long time. At the same time OMV - as well as the overall oil&gas industry - is expanding its operations in the South of Tunisia and has demand for skilled labour.

Resourcefulness – our concept for responsible business behavior - is about proactively understanding and responding to the broader needs of the communities within which we operate. We seek projects addressing specific requirements and demonstrating long-term partnership, while also providing OMV with business opportunities. In the case of Tataouine we started the setup of a Vocation training center. Our aim is threefold: a) increase market orientation of existing vocational training programs in the region, b) function as placement center and hub between existing institutions and agencies and c) promote entrepreneurial spirit low self-employment.

Excellent stakeholder engagement with local authorities and ministries will be crucial for a sustainable handover.

We have over a 1000 supporters from all over the world; hundreds have been actively involved in our work. We have recruited over 300 volunteers who have taught in over 30 schools, and trained over 500 local teachers.

At World STEM Works, we embody the concept of the intrapreneur because we go to great lengths to stand out from the vast pool of STEM organizations in three key ways. Firstly, our widely-defined goals in STEM traverse multiyear timeframes and global geography, rather than following STEM-promotion trends set by existing organizations, which tend to push dry, technical education or aim for arbitrary point score increases. Secondly, our programs not only target students and the younger generation, but make sure to include community members, parents, teachers, and outside mentors to create an atmosphere where STEM conversation is welcome and normal. Lastly, we are unique in our approach, going in at a grassroots level through a network of university undergraduate student-run chapters.

World STEM Works (WSW) is a newly-founded global undergraduate student organization that strives to combat the US general public's steady and alarming decline in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) interest by educating and inspiring K-12 students and community members to pursue a passion in STEM.

Our four core goals are:

To inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and physicians.
To create a more scientifically literate public to make better informed science policy decisions.
To foment the maturation of civic leaders among students and professional to engage with society.
To build a network of international scientists and engineers to share resources and knowledge, and set the stage upon which solve some of the world's greatest problems can be solved.

WSW grows and coordinates Empower chapters at universities across the globe, who in turn reach out to local K-12 schools and communities. This four pronged approach called the Empower model consists of:
(1) school dialogues with panels of civic scientists and hands-on STEM activity modules, which showcase the ubiquitous applications of STEM and innovation to our daily lives
(2) community dialogues with STEM leaders, bringing together students, community members, and leaders in the STEM community to inform the public about science diplomacy & policy, encouraging dialogue attendees to both develop and act upon well-reasoned beliefs and take an active part in today’s science policy decisions
(3) the Empower Challenge encourages university students to assemble a team, create an Empower chapter and put the Empower Model into practice
(4) cultivating young leaders through leadership development modules such as proper speaking, tailoring a message for an audience, and personality tests

We bridge the gaps overlooked by others in our field by encompassing all age ranges with the ultimate goal of creating a global STEM community, we teach by sparking passion and sowing incentive instead of rote learning, force, or repetition, and we cultivate leaders and civic scientists with a working knowledge of science diplomacy—a combination of initiatives seen in no other organization.

We will delineate the impact of our solution by description two aspects of it in more detail: school dialogues and Empowered Leadership Development Programs.

School dialogues make a difference in that (a) we spark healthy curiosity, creativity, and an appreciation for how seemingly common objects or ideas are deeply rooted in STEM; selected examples of dialogue topics include the physics behind Wi-Fi, the science of art conservation, and the psychology of aircraft navigation. (b) School dialogues include one of ten activity modules. All modules emphasize hands-on application and the underlying scientific principles, such as Bottle Rockets for Physics Demonstration, Pulley Tug of War, or Mouse Trap Car Construction and Racing.

Empowered Leadership Development Programs (ELDP) transform university students into civic scientists, training them in authentic leadership through hour long leadership modules (12 currently available on the website) such as proper public speaking, tailoring a message for a specific audience, and personality assessments like DESC and MBTI. ELDP skills are directly applicable during school, live, social interactions, and community outreach.

We consider our competitors to be anyone working in the field of social innovation through STEM. Some examples are the STEM Education Coalition, Teach for All, Science Gallery, and World Wide Workshop. While these and other competitors pose a challenge in that they could very well come up with an approach or methodology that is more effective than ours, none takes the unique, 4-pronged stance (previously described) with roots in science diplomacy and the civic scientist that we do. Also, we have taken measures to continuously gather and analyze data through IRB-approved surveys that measure the effectiveness of our efforts among students and members of the public. This data guides our efforts to continually improve the Empower model to stand out from competitors in our field.

WSW began as Rice Empower, our flagship university chapter established by WSW co-founder Kareem Ayoub during his undergraduate education at Rice University, in Houston, Texas. Rice Empower did many of the activities WSW does today, such as K-12 outreach through leadership development and dialogues. From the positive results and impact of Rice Empower initiatives, Kareem and other Rice Empower members soon realized that the Empower Model approach had a far greater potential impact. This lead to a partnership between Kareem Ayoub and other current co-founder, Thierry Rignol, also of Rice University, to the founding of multiple Empower chapters across the globe, and the eventual founding of the umbrella non-profit organization, WSW, incorporated in April 2012.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

WSW was incorporated in Texas in April 2012, and received IRS tax-exempt status in December 2012. Since its establishment, the organization has expanded from its flagship Rice University Empower chapter in Houston, Texas to its ten current university chapters, five of which are in the United States (Duke, Georgia Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins and the University of Texas at Austin) and 5 abroad (UK, India, China & Singapore). We anticipate the addition of five more US chapters in the next couple of months (Arizona State, MIT, Stanford, Texas A&M, Harvard and Yale). All chapters meet chapter standards described on our website of outreach events and activities held each year. A recent 1200-student study conducted by Rice Empower showed that 91% of K-12 students who partook in dialogues or activities were more seriously considering a STEM career.

We aim for 25 active global chapters by the end of 2013, and 65 by the end of 2015. Each university chapter will reach out to 10% of K-12 students within a 10-mile radius, and 3% of community members within the same radius. We also have a civic scientist and STEM social network in the works, and have much hope in its growth and conception to be established in at least 20 geographically and ethnically diverse countries by the end of 2015.

Our major barrier will be fund-acquisition, as we have been funded primarily through grants, and on a chapter-by-chapter basis. We plan to overcome this by applying for as many realistic and feasible grants and competitions as we can, networking to get our name and message out, and representing ourselves with integrity to the public through competitions and initiatives such as through Ashoka Changemakers.

We're creating valuable social change in the form of a STEM-educated younger generation, who will go on to pursue STEM careers, have opportunities they otherwise would have unknowingly forgone, and go on to solve some of society's most pressing problems. We also hope to increase STEM awareness on a global scale, and build a community of STEM professionals and students.

Through networking and conscientious searching, we've put together a team of chapter leadership, and World STEM Works leadership with the experience and drive necessary to get our initiative fully to scale. Our finance division is applying for funds, and our leadership directors are coordinating chapter dynamics and ensuring that each chapter adheres to predefined standards and quality. We're leveraging internal resources in a prudent manner to ensure optimum output and long-term stability.

As we continue to obtain funds, we'll build up our finance department to have a constant stream of grant and funding applications flowing in and out of our organization. As a non-profit organization, we also welcome donations and continue to consolidate existing partnerships, and create new ones. Building up from a $6,600 yearly surplus in 2012, we're aiming for a $10,000 surplus in 2013 and an eventual surplus in the $100,000 range by 2015.

Some key partnerships and associations made with World STEM Works are through university chapters, which link World STEM Works to various universities worldwide, through various organizations in those chapters such as Rice's Baker Institute, and through competitions we have performed in and received recognition, such as Dell's Social Innovation Challenge, and Clinton Global University Initiative.

The internal support at World STEM Works comes from our dedicated and knowledgeable leadership team. Our per-chapter leadership teams are just as strong and in close communication with us at regular intervals. We've received minor push-back in the form of not being able to obtain grants or funding, or doubts raised by newly-established chapters, but the vast majority have all been resolved quickly and without further problems.

Students Circle has grown to become a world known social network and has been featured on several news media worldwide. A Necessidade: Qual problema social ou ambiental você está tentando resolver?

In the past school year, the total number of students that graduated from Nigeria’s high schools totaled about 1,500,000 students. However the capacity of the students who could be admitted in Nigerian schools totaled about 350,000. The estimate of the number of students who are expected to study outside Nigeria was put at about 250,000. This leaves a gap of about 900,000 students who will need to gain admissions. Our research shows that over 200,000 are qualified and can afford the education. This research also shows that there are another 150,000 who are qualified but cannot adequately afford higher education.

These figures have accumulated over the past 10 years resulting in over 7 million Nigerian youths who are trapped between High Schools and Universities.

We have created Beni American University, Africa's first Hybrid university that combines the uniqueness and flexibility of online learning with the rigorous curriculum of on-campus learning to train students both locally and regionally.

• CLASSES: Live video, audio and text classrooms from our interactive learning portal
• GROUP COLLABORATION: group collaboration through our learning portal and google apps
• PROJECTS: student projects
• TESTS and QUIZES: online tests, quizzes and assignments each week.

30% On-Campus
• STUDY / FACILITATION: Physical mini campuses for facilitation and student support
• INTERNSHIP: compulsory 30 day internship program for all students
• EXAMINATIONS: examinations are taken at physical testing centers.

Joining the Institution:
We are admit students from all background who are qualified based on our standards which includes equality for women and girls. Students are then provided with free learning support tools such as tablet computers, internet access and library access. The students will be taken through our online learning training before they start their degree or professional programs.

Our classes typically take place online through our learning platform. Students receive their course schedules and log on to the platform at the designated times and join other students and their instructors in our unique virtual classrooms. Student engagement in the learning process remains a key aspect of our teaching and learning practice.
Tests and Quizzes, Discussions and Forums take place online. However final examinations are physical

After Completion from our university
Entrepreneurship Programs: Our students will take a 12 week bootcamp program with our partner incubators, accelerators and center of entrepreneurship. They will be grouped in 5’s to create business solutions out of ideas that can be implemented in the market. We will invest in the projects and create mentorship

Degree Completion Program: Our students who wish to move on to our partner universities to complete their undergraduate degree programs can do so with little or no barrier. We have created a direct entry system into these universities of choice to allow our students enjoy the highest preference.

Graduation: Our students may also graduate with their BAU awarded degrees and diplomas

After creating and successfully growing global educational social network – Students Circle in 2010, I realized from the inputs and conversations with the students who signed up to the network to access free learning resources from over 200 global universities needed more. Upon a closer look, I realized that most of the students from the West African region didnt just need another free course resource, they also needed to be tested and awarded a form of certificate to show for it.

Taking a trip to Nigeria, I conducted a survey to find out the reason for this. Upon the conclusion of the survey, the results were glaring. There was an obvious gap in the higher education provisioning in that region. Students were not being admitted because there were no free capacity schools.

Looking back at the success of Students Circle Network and working with a network of global educators and mentors, I decided to lay the foundation for a university that will overcome the prevalent challenges

Pilot Student Program
Date: 1st April 2012 – 20th April 2012
Details: We offered a free Entrepreneurship and Innovation short program to over 100 students within Nigeria. At the completion of this program, we continued following up with the students, providing mentoring and support and by December 2012, 3 had successfully moved from Idea to Solution on their businesses. They credit the program we offered them and our post program support for their success.

This gave us the opportunity to measure the acceptance, usability and viability of our solutions.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program
In December 2012, we started offering free a full scale Entrepreneurship and Innovation program to university students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife who are studying Computer Science and are members of the Paradigm Initiative TENT Program.

We are already in the process of reviewing business plans from some of these students and staging an Business competition for them

1. Kicking off our Degree Programs by June 2013 with an estimated 200 students.
2. Graduating a minimum of 2500 students from our professional programs.
3. Investing and sourcing finance for a minimum of 10 student project teams
4. Graduating our inaugural class in exactly 3 years.
5. Include more Market / Industry specific Entrepreneurship Programs in our offering such as Entrepreneurship and Innovation Clean Energy, Agriculture and more
6. Grow our degree program disciplines to at least 10 programs.
7. Advance our usage of technology and the provision of learning to the population that do not have access to the internet but do have access to normal mobile phones through SMS.
8. As a partner to several international universities, BAU will provide cross campus opportunities.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

Government Policies: as at the time we started, there were no regulations, policies and guidelines for online institutions let alone our unique hybrid model in Nigeria. However we have worked closely with the appropriate authorities over the past one year to institute proceedings to create these policies and implement them.

Public Weariness:Our unique model ensures that students are tested like they would be if they were in regular universities. This combined with constant awareness programs will create more acceptance. Our research shows that the students on their own are ready to take on online learning

Employability: We are partnering with recognized organizations that have pledged to accept our students for internship programs. This is showing that employers do not mind the model

Beni American University is a self sustaining project that can run on the tuition of students who enroll. Our model allows us to spend on resources in equal proportions to the number of students we have currently enrolled.

The tuition of students cover every aspect of the learning process, logistics and maintenance of the institution. We have worked extensively to find the middle ground between affordability and viability to offer programs that the students can afford and at the same time, can cover for their learning costs and more.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

Our free programs are supported by Students Circle Network and our instructors are professors from already established institutions who are currently in their current employment but take out a compulsory number of hours per week to teach and assess students.

Our Degree programs are directly funded by our students and the instructors are professors who are under our employ and are paid equivalent to the number of students they teach and assess with specific limits to the number they can have in each class.

The rest of the BAU team are spread across the globe with their unique strengths and knowledge employed when needed and when they are serving their roles. Each team member commits are certain amount of time every week to focus on this project while a few of us work full time.

Tuition: Our student tuition plan will continue to remain a revenue stream for the institution. With every year comes an estimated growth in the number of students and this will result in increased revenue

Internal Sales: Provision of student merchandise and other related services will be a source of revenue for the institution.

Administrative Fees: Students will be required to pay certain standard administrative fees and registration figures that are common with institutions of higher learning. This also remain relative to the number of admitted students.

Grants: As a supporting plan to our other revenue streams, we will eventually apply for grants that support institutions of higher learning both locally and internationally.
