Here's a story about how members of the Changemakers community are broadening their successful green business:

Clothing shoppers are rethinking things these days: Can I be fashionable without being frivolous? Is it possible to buy chic clothing that’s also eco-friendly? Do my consumer choices make a difference? Among the retailers answering yes to these questions is an online store billed as "Patagonia-meets-Prada."

The store, Nau, is based in Portland, Oregon-based and was started by ex-executives of Nike, Adidas, Marmot Mountain, and Patagonia Inc. It sells quality, tailored garments made from materials such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, cornstarch and merino wool.

Waste Ventures

In the next six months, Waste Ventures will incubate one small scale waste management company in north-central India. This company will employ waste pickers, who will be provided with a revenue blueprint, enabling them to multiply their profit margins by four times. They will do this by charging a fee for door-to-door waste collection, chipping and selling recyclables, producing compost to upgrade poor soil, and eventually creating biomass briquettes from garden waste, all while earning carbon credits.

Sussex Startup Award is a competition open to Sussex student and recent graduates for enterpreneurial ideas. My winner's packahge included six months of mentoring from the Sussex Innovation Centre, office space and a £2000 grant to be used in developing my idea further.
I also won first runner-up at the Sussex University Enterprize competition under the category of "improving the lives of Sussex students".

Elevator Pitch

Our project makes hot, healthy meals an easy option for busy people. It then uses the profits from these meals to subsidise the cost of the same service for others. We are making organic, sustainable, waste-reducing strategies mainstream in the food market.

Problema

Hot, healthy food on the go is virtually impossible to find at a reasonable price in the UK. Healthy food is expensive. Cheap food makes you fat. Most of it is cold, [in a country where a warm meal can make a world of difference]. And everything is just a little bit unethical. It is hard to shop for food that does not make you feel worse about yourself in some way.

Solução

We provide ethically sourced, fresh, hot, healthy meals to your place of work. The profits subsidise the cost of meals to students, mothers, children and the homeless. The entrie system aims to reduce waste, by buying and sourcing ingredents in bulk, encourage healthy eating across the board, and sources sustainable produce from farmers in the local area. We take the hassle out of you packing a lunch or buying food and make responsible choices convenient.

Exemplo

Meet Laura. She is 24, waitresses, and is a student. Money is tight so she cycles between work, home and University. She leaves early and is not home till late evening. Her meals consist of cheap crisps, shoddily made peanut butter sandwiches, and kebabs. Food is not a priority and money is always a concern. So Laura hears about us. She signs up. Everyday a van pulls up outside University and provides Laura with a fresh warm meal, made with local ingredients. She pays less, because the meals are made in bulk and then cycles off tto work on a full stomach. Rather than being goverened by circumstance, she knows she has made a positive contribution to society, eaten in a way that’s respectful to her body and has made a berry good decision.

Impacto

Still in its idea phase, The Very Berry Lunch Company is preparing for a pilot in London in June 2014. Using the present grant from the Sussex Innovation Centre, we are in the process of preparing a targetted marketing strategy that understands the best populationto launch our project to. We aim to provide it to the young, working population in the UK, and slowly expand. The profits from our mainstream sales will make us able to provide the same service at a lower cost to students, the homeless and single mothers. We hope to make people across the board eat better quality food and think about their consumer power in making responsible chocies.

Mercado

There are other great innovations such as Foodcycle in the UK, and Spoonfuls of Love in the US that attempt to reduce waste and encourage healthy eating. There are also local cafes, restaurants and plans that incorporate sustainability and encourage organic food. However, this project aims to draw together a few different threads and unite them while making the general system itself convenient by including a delivery service. It aims to partner with people working in the space but is different in its approach.

Plano de Sustentabilidade

We aims to run two streams. A first that caters to the office-going population in CBZ areas. Profits from these sales subsidize the cost of meals for students, single mothers, and the homeless population. We keep costs low by buying produce directly from local farmers. All meals will be vegetarian and we and we plan to lease a local kitchen and are currently designing the most cost-effective routes and delivery strategies, with the team.

When I went to University, I realised how hard it was to buy healthy food, at a reasonable price and on the go. I tried packing lunches, realised it spilt in my bag and I ended up wasting mulchy spinach everyweek. I couldn’t afford to eat at campus cafes everyday. I thought back to a childhood in India where a tiffinbox from home sent me hot, healthy food at school everyday. It was a concept that worked in India flawlessly. If only, that could be translated and adapted to a Westren context, we could seriosuly reduce the effects of food poverty and obesity in the UK. What a wonderful way to live.

Elevator Pitch

Nevara aims to facilitate the growth of urban farms through providing comprehensive, high-tech and expert support services. This support will allow small farmers to pursue best practices at a low price, retain capital in local communities and make organic produce more accessible and affordable.

Problema

Urban communities have limited access to quality food, particularly organics, which disempowers and drains capital from communities and otherwise depresses the standard of living. Even as local and organic produce demand increases, many people remain unaware of the potential of urban farming. The market remains highly fragmented and in need of high-tech solutions and a solid marketing effort to achieve greater supply and demand efficiency.

Solução

Increased use of urban and local farming is the only solution to these problems that also empowers communities. Nevara aims to make this type of farming more accessible, affordable and common by reducing barriers to entry, providing expert knowledge and marketing support, promoting new urban farming techniques and developing solutions to specific problems. Nevara has a long-term vision of building a web-based Urban Farming Platform to facilitate production, distribution and sales of and coordinate community farming. Nevara will initially deliver consulting services for online fundraising and develop programs to promote healthy eating such as with Zapan, a new payment solution with rewards for healthy eating.

Exemplo

Nevara is working towards deployment in Boulder, Colorado utilizing the technologies and expertise that we are developing in California. We will work with local leaders and community organizations to develop farming programs, market their products and grow. In particular, we will expose them to the newest urban farming techniques, especially aquaponics, that offers sustainability and a high level of nutrition to the community, which we hope will be attractive to local communities. We will connect them with companies like Shanghai Aquaponics, Kijani Grows and The Aquaponic Source, with whom we collaborate to provide individualized urban farms. Eventually, we will develop a self-sustaining network of urban growers to help feed Boulder.

Impacto

Our large scale triple-bottom line approach to farming will make greater availability and convenient delivery of local produce to the community a viable option. Furthermore, Nevara will optimize the whole value chain from seeds to restaurants, seeking to create efficiencies by extensive use of high-tech and introducing innovations and best practices. We believe that the impact of this work will also promote resilience and revitalization of communities. Nevara’s focus on Urban Farming will bring all the pieces together for organic farming to become sustainable, eliminating use of pesticides, soil contamination and Genetically Engineered (GE) produce of lower nutritional content. Communities with high levels of crime and unemployment will be given a path to prosperity by stimulating local trade and keeping more funds in the community.

Mercado

Many companies are, of course, attempting to resolve this problem. Some, for example, are developing lines of cheap, nutritious and easy to transport and use food. Other companies focus on other things including putting small grocery stores into local neighborhoods, programs to train those without farming skills or other education programs. Our company is unique in that it will focus on supporting and growing the urban farm market on a comprehensive basis, creating a, hopefully, sustainable system of farming to feed our cities.

Nevara will initially deliver consulting services for online fundraising combined with donations from the community to get established. Self-sustainability will be achieved through continued consulting and distribution of non-GMO organic produce to the local community - such as Farmer’s Markets and Gourmet Restaurants. Focus is to achieve scale in selected cities and optimize the value chain.

Lars, our visionary charismatic leader, is the glue who has passionately built a team. It all started December 2012, with Tamara, Chad and Lars building the concept of a "democratic social network" as direct response to At that time Facebook's lack of democracy in their voting process.

Nevara's visionary leader has been studying entrepreneurship for 15 years, with 14 years in higher education, focused on how to maximize impact. In the 4th year of his PhD, he is doing action research - bringing together all his insight in recruiting passionate interns to join Nevara, in additional to preparing a new class called Impact Assessment.

While much of the efforts recruited to improve quality, efficiency and sustainability is done out of goodwill and passionate students volunteering their time - Nevara has reached a bottleneck caused by financial constraints.

Elevator Pitch

SOIL builds ecological sanitation (EcoSan) systems in Haiti that transform human wastes into rich compost. By turning a public health problem into a sustainable solution for soil restoration, SOIL’s work sets a global example for how sanitation services can preserve nutrients and fight malnutrition.

Problema

Over 2/3 of the world's population has no access to a toilet and, as a result, waterborne disease is one of the leading causes of death in children under 5 in developing countries. While aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly polluted with nutrients from human waste, the Earth’s soils exhibit rapidly declining fertility, reducing agricultural production and leading to poverty and malnutrition.

Solução

SOIL strives to counteract the downward spiral of soil degradation and poverty by developing social business models for EcoSan solutions. SOIL’s toilets safely collect toilet wastes which are then transported to decentralized composting sites. Through thermophillic composting, the wastes are safely transformed into rich compost critical for soil improvement. In order to increase market demand for this inexhaustible supply of soil nutrients, SOIL then engages in agricultural research and educational outreach. Potential income streams from throughout the EcoSan cycle (toilet and compost sales, user fees, and waste treatment fees) are used to support the project and entice entrepreneurs to replicate it around the country and globally.

Exemplo

In Shada, a densely populated urban neighborhood with few services and a devastatingly high rate of cholera, SOIL has begun constructing EcoSan toilets small enough and scentless enough to conveniently fit into small homes. The specially designed toilet seats separate urine and feces so that the potentially pathogenic solid wastes are collected into sealable 5 gallon buckets. In exchange for a monthly household user fee of approximately $5 USD, SOIL picks up the full toilet buckets each week and leaves toilet owners with clean empty buckets and a sufficient quantity of organic matter (such as peanut husks) to “flush” their toilets after each use. The user fees cover the full cost of transportation and maintenance.

Impacto

Since building Haiti’s first EcoSan toilet in 2006 and Haiti’s first urban waste treatment site in 2009, SOIL has gone on to become one of the larger sanitation providers in Haiti with effective toilets and waste treatment facilities around the country, strong partnerships with the non-profit, business, and government sectors, and an information-sharing and educational program that has helped increase the use of EcoSan globally. SOIL now transforms 5,000+ gallons of human waste into compost on a weekly basis and 30,000+ people have accessed SOIL EcoSan toilets. 700+ people from more than 25 countries have downloaded The SOIL Guide to EcoSan and 1,000+ people have participated in SOIL educational activities. Over the next 3 years, SOIL's aims to treat 150,000+ gallons of human waste per year, provide sanitation for 40,000+ people, create 200+ jobs, and sell 250+ tons of compost.

Mercado

SOIL focuses on grassroots-level programming with an unparalleled level of cultural fluency, an inclusive process of program design, and a proven record of implementing projects in challenging circumstances. Too many innovations fail to reach beneficiaries due to lack of local connections or implementation expertise. And while there are some superb working models for how innovative designs can be implemented at the community level, they rarely have a robust information-sharing program to assist others in replicating the success. SOIL's proven outreach program spread our success globally.

Plano de Sustentabilidade

Although SOIL is a non-profit, we believe that the key to sustainability is social business development. Our work explores the creation and capture of revenue throughout the EcoSan cycle to ensure that SOIL's projects can be brought to scale by the private sector. For example, SOIL recently sold a large quantity of compost to the farmers growing sorghum for Haiti’s famous beer, Prestige, setting a national example for demand driven sanitation.

In a soil science course, one of my exam questions was “you are a nitrogen molecule, describe your journey through the ecosystem”. This inspired me to view the world in terms of elemental cycles and I began peeing on my compost pile in an effort to recycle nutrients through my own body. Later in my studies I became fascinated with the philosophy of liberation theology. Like ecology, liberation theology argues that every being has value and there is no such thing as “waste”. SOIL was founded on an idea of liberation ecology: every human being has the right to health and happiness. We work on providing nutrients and healthy environments through the recycling of human wastes, on a much larger scale than my backyard compost pile.

With increased capacity, SOIL would expand programs to meet all Nutrients for All targets. We would increase our R&D of novel methods for recycling human wastes thereby improving nutrition, environmental restoration, and agricultural production. We would focus on developing a market for the nutrient-rich compost produced at our facilities and streamlining the provision of sanitation services in order to reduce costs to users. We would also expand our outreach and education programs to encourage social business replication of our successful programs, extending the impact of our work globally.

AMPP fights poverty, hunger and malnutrition in Malawi by promoting and establishing sustainable cottage industries and permaculture, with a focus on the highly nutritious Moringa Oleifera. The project is based at the heart of a rural lakeside community and works directly with community members.

Problema

Over 50% of Malawians live in extreme poverty and unemployment is the norm. Each year brings round a time known as "the hunger season". Just under 50% of children suffer from stunted growth due to malnutrition & more have mineral & vitamin deficiencies leading to many cases of ocular, epidermal and follicle degenerations. Many Malawians walk miles daily to find fire wood and water. Bare, burned soils are eroded and depleted come the rain season.

Solução

Poverty: AMPP provides jobs & opportunities to develop sustainable value added businesses for ready markets. Our main focus is on producing Moringa powder for which we have found ready markets. AMPP also plans to develop value added products as well as commercialising fresh produce. Hunger: Permaculture mimics nature to create resilient agricultural systems and higher and more diverse yields, putting an end to the hunger season. Malnutrition:The highly nutritious leaves of the fast growing, drought resistant Moringa tree are widely used as a multivitamin food supplement, the seeds are pressed for oil and the seed-cake purifies water. Our Moringa will be interplanted with Gliricidia and Cajanus Cajan for fire wood and soil nutrients.

Exemplo

Kelvin is the 3 year old son of a Malawian permaculture designer. As such he has had access to a wide variety of food, including Moringa, all his young life and is in great health. His father Eston is employed as a permaculture teacher. His mother Calo is studying nutrition. When Calo asks people how old they think her son is the answer is 5-6. They are shocked when told he is 3. People are so used to malnourished, stunted children that it has almost become the norm. Permaculture and Moringa can radically change the lives of entire families, providing economic and intellectual opportunities while eradicating hunger and malnutrition. AMPP wants to replicate Kelvin's story and provide similar opportunities to as many Malawians as possible.

Impacto

The project has been going for seven months and employs eleven people. All employees have been or will be trained in permaculture and making value added products (eg: jam, soap, dried fruit). Moringa and other trees have been planted in the village where AMPP operates. Community members in contact with us are planting home gardens and more trees. Land is being prepared and tree nurseries built for planting to begin in earnest next rain season with several thousand Moringa, fruit, fuel and soil building trees being planted in the community and on AMPP land. Community produce will be consumed locally and sold in Malawi with AMPP providing market linkages and processing facilities. AMPP has established favourable links with local hotels and farmer's markets for the sale of fruit, vegetables and value added products, providing opportunities for employment and cottage industry development.

Mercado

Many organisations, big or small, (USAID, Trees for life) have limited scopes. AMPP's focus on commercial permaculture enables us to find solutions to a wide range of problems faced by our community over the long term, while our focus on Moringa targets immediate problems of malnutrition. AMPP believes in collaboration. We work with Kusamala to train community members in permaculture and African Agricultural Operations, a private company, to secure markets for Moringa. We have found untapped markets for which we have a comparative advantage thanks to our location and collaborative efforts.

Plano de Sustentabilidade

As well as developing community cottage industries, AMPP will be growing its own Moringa trees and producing goods for sale on a larger scale. Market links have already been established to make this possible. AMPP operates with a revolving fund and profits will be reinvested to scale up our income generation. AMPP is training a Malawian, Sam Baluti, to replicate this model. We currently rely on donations and two small grants secured this year.

My first job in Malawi, early last year, was to establish a medicinal garden on a permaculture farm. That's where I first encountered the highly nutritious Moringa tree. It was quickly apparent that Moringa could help alleviate malnutrition in Malawi and that a market for Moringa products would be readily available. Having seen Eston, Calo and Kelvin succeed, it seemed obvious that permaculture and Moringa together, combined with a collaborative attitude, could put an end to malnutrition and hunger in Malawi and provide sustainable sources of income. The longer I am here the more I believe in what we are doing and that the successful future of such initiatives can only be achieved in a spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding.

Elevator Pitch

We give trainings and environmental consulting to community projects in Myanmar. We assist with sustainable design and agriculture by integrating methods such as mud-brick building and organic composting. This will strengthen the community to be self-reliant using sustainable methods and practices.

Problema

Environmental issues facing Myanmar include damaging agricultural practices, resource consumption, pollution, erosion, and improper waste management. Social issues are directly linked to environmental practices such as resource/food scarcity, health, inequality, and poverty. We use environmental consulting as a bridge to address these social problems in a region of the world where direct social engagement is made difficult by the government.

Solução

We will provide trainings to post-10 programs. These trainings will include techniques in agriculture and animal husbandry, food bank developments, fuel efficient stoves, mud brick making, environmentally-conscious architectural design and land use planning. Youth projects via model farms are the initial form of engagement with local communities. GCC will not be project facilitators but are expert consults on projects assisting with environmental alternative solutions, and education training. We help provide access to nutrient rich produce and organic methodologies. By providing assistance through education and training, GCC empowers the community in sustainable agriculture practices and promotes access to sustainable nutritional health.

Exemplo

Land use planning and training with our partner (NEED-Burma) will provided 50 practitioners with real world training and practice. The training includes organic compost, fuel efficient stoves and agro-forestry. They then implement these strategies in their local communities. For example, two youth from last year’s NEED program are currently running model farm projects (one with an agro-forestry model) and a third is conducting a bio-diversity project for local agricultural species. The projects will provide organic produce and animals to the local community, offer training and models for organic methods, and will have the potential to influence 1,000s of people within and around each village.

Impacto

To date, GCC has assisted on one land use planning project and is currently working on developing another model farm. The land use planning project was with NEED-Myanmar’s new school in Burma, helping to design the layout of the farm, mud-brick making for buildings, and installing water access points for running water and irrigation. The school will house 50 youth for a 10 month program annually and will offer supplementary university agriculture courses for the local colleges and government personal within the next 5 years.

Our current project includes a model farm and model agro-forest. Trainings conducted here and organic produce and chickens will help provide healthy foods and sustainable livelihoods to the local villages. This has the potential to reach 1000s through trainings and food security.

Mercado

Many organizations work on environment, human rights, and political issues, yet none bridge the seemingly isolated topics successfully. NEED and democratic ethnic parties, whom are at odds with the government, come close. By acting as consultants, GCC networks these organizations rather than being in competition for resources. Also, whereas other organizations take ownership of a project, GCC does not – we are consultants. Approaching projects this way, the ownership and successes remain entirely that of the communities; improving the success rate and continued implementation of the models.

Plano de Sustentabilidade

GCC will rely on a number of funding sources: private donations, grants, and project generated funding. In addition to youth projects, GCC does community referral, and hostel/hotels. In order cover annual growing expenses, GCC will actively seek hostels and hotels consulting projects. The goal of these projects is to bolster environmentalism in tourism and support other GCC consulting projects and trainings.

I volunteered for a few months as an environment and community development instructor with the Network for Environment and Economic Development (NEED-Myanmar formally known as NEED-Burma). NEED-Myanmar is a post-10 school for Burmese community development practitioners with a special focus on ethnic minorities, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods.

As a volunteer member of their staff, I became increasingly involved with these young practitioner’s lives, experiences, and future dreams. Their desire to work towards change, and the need for expert environmental consulting following their graduation, was the catalyst for my organization’s inception.

This would allow GCC to greatly improve the quality of our consulting work. At the moment, we rely on pro bono remote experts. This added capacity will allow GCC to provide onsite assistance by covering visa fees, project transportation costs, and covering living expense. Additionally, the funding will allow GCC to provide seed funding to a number of youth projects as well as assist with 501(c)(3) registration to ensure future finical stability and our continued work in Burma.

Students as agents of change will incorporate the theory they learn in class with field-based experiments and marketing where they will need to produce organic food. Additionally, they must apply zero waste intergrated farming approach, where the biomass of the products will be returned to the soil

Problema

Indonesia is rich in resources, yet the prices of commodities, particularly food, are becoming more expensive. Most of traditional markets have been shut down by the monopoly of few giant supermarkets which control commodity price. People think less about their environment and become self-centered, which may relate to the education system that does not develop human as a whole.

Solução

We would like to re-introduce traditional market system where producers and consumers can meet directly by bringing quality (organic) products. We hope that we can reduce the cost of the products since there is no transport, land, labor, and equipment cost. Since in traditional markets, real social networking is also happening, we expect that the students may spread the knowledge of organic farming. Therefore, not only that the consumers get fresh produce, but they also get science on how to interact wisely with the planet. We expect that this kind of curriculum which integrates classroom teaching with real world may develop students' interest on ecosystem processes and eventually taking care of their environment.

Exemplo

Students engage in Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Green Economy will be grouped and each group needs to develop a plan to build their own organic garden. They will manage a small farm of plant veggies, medicinal plants, or staple food according to their own interests in University's land as part of their field work. Since this farming method is part of their curriculum, they will be assessed based on their land productivity and the amount of money they can get by selling their products. In determining the price of their products, they should include everything but the price of land, labor and equipment.

Impacto

With the advance of technology, students nowadays have sizeable networks which can be used to promote their activities. If 1 student has 10 friends, meaning there will be 1000 other people who know about this activity if there are 100 students. They are the agent of change, meaning they can spread the knowledge to greater society. They will also become the future decision makers of the world, and therefore they need to understand not only about how the market works and but also about how people are interacting with each other and their environment. Since this is also part of academic curriculum, we expect to get more interest and publications using University's brand and media. We hope to spread nutrient availability to the surrounding neighborhood by selling cheap fresh produce because we do not include the cost of labor, land and equipment.

Mercado

While there have been similar proposals to make use abandoned land by planting organic products, this solution differs from others because we would like to concentrate ourselves to educate 'green' young generations. We incorporate scientific knowledge with field works and marketing strategies since we would like to develop them to become someones who are aware of the environment and the socio-cultural setting of local society. We believe that young people have great capacity to develop their ability and open their mind given the right education.

Plano de Sustentabilidade

We need fund to develop our small farms and buy ecological tools. Once we are able to produce and sell our organic products, we will use the money as capital for the next cohort of students. Here students must return the initial 'loan' (which is the plant seeds or seedlings and manure), may share the remaining among them and hopefully donating some of their revenue for the incoming students since they also receive support from others.

We have students and land and academic capacity, why don't we combine them so that students will also get real life experience (how to become environmentally-friendly entrepreneurs) while having FUN. They also do something good for the planet (organic farming and zero waste), and the society (how to consider others). Our motto is to generate entrepreneurs which are able to develop profitable business yet they are environmentally and society friendly. We hope that our project will interest many people, starting from the students, their families and friends and eventually greater society.

TOHL developed a patent-pending technology for installing pipelines cheaply, quickly sustainably, and in any location. This technology utilizes much longer segments of pipeline than what is traditionally used. Single segments of pipeline are manufactured in lengths of 500 meters to several kilometers, and these long segments are loaded directly onto large spools that are deployed via helicopter or truck. The pipelines have fewer connections, which decreases labor hours during installation and allows the pipelines to be in operation faster than is possible if using conventional infrastructure technology. The installation methods also allows for TOHL to access previously unreachable areas.

TOHL has demonstrated significant demand for their services globally, partnerships and alliances have been formed with key industry players, and legal corporate structures as well as patents are in place. Now TOHL needs to grow their team in order to be able to implement the infrastructure contracts that will be signed in the coming months and years. Some of the pieces of the team are in place, but some clear positions are missing. TOHL’s growth is severely hampered if we are unable to hire salaried team members now. TOHL’s management see no reason to wait reason to wait until having enough cash flow from operations. It is inefficient to wait for organic growth when there is a clear demand for TOHL’s services globally. In order to hire the experienced professional needed for implementing these projects and pursuing others through our strategic partnerships, TOHL is raising between $500,000 and $1,000,000 USD. This money will be used for working capital for operations, to hired a CFO, 2 operations team members, a Chilean country manager, and two more sales team associates. TOHL plans to build the best company possible in line with the financial and human resources it currently has.

As TOHL continues to address the global demand for increased access to water and other fluids, it is important for TOHL to locate an human capital partner with the ability and the aptitude to assits our team in its growth. As our product seeks to scale in the Latin American sphere, and potentially outside of this region, we believe that American Express excels in areas of social impact and targeted growth. We are seeking partners to scale outside of Chile, and could uses American Express' help in writing a narrative that coincides the the mission behind a social enterprise.

Our board of advisors includes five separate individuals who are experts in their fields: from heavy industry (construction, mining), academics (civil engineering professor), to innovation and inventiveness (CEO of an innovation center in Chile). However, due to the nature of our new product, we are seeking to define a new paradigm in infrastructure development. The technology behind TOHL’s success is proven and market-ready for a variety of industrial and humanitarian needs. The first successful pilot of the Mobile Infrastructure technology took place in July 2012 with direct assistance from a variety of Chilean-based partners, including the Chilean Red Cross, Tigre, EcoCopter, SIDE Chile, and CORFO. This working product demonstrated the ability to deploy 1.2 kilometers of pipeline over an 86 meter elevation change in mountainous territory. The actual pipeline installation occurred in 9 minutes, with the subsequent power source, pump, and filtration system being installed in another 8 hours. A flow rate of 14 liters/minute was achieved in this pilot, which is a significant amount considering the small size of the tubing.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

With TOHL’s plans for gradual global expansion outside of Chilean operations, a similar path will guide the management team’s actions. The passion to provide continuous water flow technologies to marginalized communities in emerging economies acts as a motive to seek out such customers. Stakeholders with a vested interest in these communities (municipalities, local businesses, NGOs and multinational organizations) will pay for such systems. The provision of such services to industrial clients outside of Chile will be sought in the near future as well. Prospective industries that have already been in contact with executives from TOHL include defense industry, construction, and oil and gas. Over 135 separate municipalities are currently on TOHL’s list of possible clients.

MedPLUS Connect is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission to connect underserved health systems in developing countries with recovered, donated medical supplies from the US. We empower health personnel to select medical supplies that are compatible with local resources and needs, and ship these supplies in a sustainable, predictable and reliable manner.

Recycling Medical Supplies to Save Lives

As a novel, demand-driven venture, the MedPLUS Connect model addresses several key international healthcare needs. Currently, due to innovation and insurance regulations, there are billions of dollars of unused medical supplies and equipment in the United States. MedPLUS serves as a direct link between recovered supplies from the US, and hospitals and health centers in the most impoverished and underserved areas of Ghana, West Africa. Before sending medical supplies, the MedPLUS Connect team conducts a site visit at each hospital or health center to meet with physicians and administrators and discuss the specific needs of the facility. We work directly with hospital officials to develop a prioritized request list of the specific equipment and supplies the hospitals needs most. We then work with our partners in the US to fill the needs of the Ghanaian health centers with donated supplies that are in excellent condition. The Ghanaian Ministry of Health funds each shipment, at a price that is substantially lower than the value of supplies sent. We currently send approximately 75,000 pounds of medical supplies each year. By partnering with MedPLUS Connect, our partner hospitals in Ghana are able to save a large percentage of their budgets usually spent on non-drug consumables and divert these funds towards additional health programs and hospital expansion. MedPLUS Connect is also able to ship high-value items such as anesthesia machines, vitals monitors, and hospital beds, giving impoverished hospitals access to expensive, high-quality items they could not ordinarily afford.

Although some medical supply recovery programs exist in the US, these organizations generally rely on unpredictable philanthropy. Because they often lack direct relationships with the recipients, these organizations do not always send the exact supplies each recipient hospital needs. MedPLUS is unique because of our extensive experience working in Ghana combined with our innovative, ground tested venture model. We work directly with our partner hospitals develop a prioritized request list. We then work with our partners in the US to match recovered supplies with the requests. We charge our recipients the cost of shipping plus a small surcharge, which allows the majority of our organization to function independently without relying completely on the uncertainties of philanthropic donations.

The 8 member Board of Directors includes the 3 primary founders of MedPLUS Connect, 2 of whom have also served as Executive Directors. Moreover, 6 of our board members have personally visited our recipient hospitals in Ghana. The remaining 2 Board Members have been with MedPLUS since its inception and all have both an extensive knowledge of the mechanisms of MedPLUS Connect and the energy to see to its success. The passion and dedication of the Board of Directors is mirrored by the Executive Director and all other employees of MedPLUS. The supportive environment of MedPLUS also contributes to our continued success by encouraging ideas for expansion and improvements.

We also have an extensively knowledgeable and diverse Board of Advisors available to aid in strategizing. Our organization strives to constantly advance our model by actively reviewing each shipment sent in order to make improvements in our work, and we directly solicit feedback from our recipients in Ghana.

Many hospitals and health centers in Ghana function without the basic equipment and supplies necessary to provide medical care. They also suffer from restricted budgets that make purchasing high value equipment such as anesthesia machines nearly impossible. US hospitals annually dispose of over $6 billion USD of medical supplies, many of which are recoverable and reusable. Hospitals often donate high value working medical equipment when they upgrade to a newer model. Manufacturers also donate unsellable products with damaged packaging, although the integrity of the supplies is not compromised. Developing countries occasionally receive donations of medical supplies but these donations are not reliable and often consist of supplies the hospitals do not need or do not have the support to use.

MedPLUS Connect unites under-resourced health systems in Ghana with recovered medical supplies from the US, while ensuring that each hospital receives only the equipment and supplies actually needed. Before sending medical supplies MedPLUS Connect conducts site visits at each hospital and works with hospital officials to develop a specific request list of items the hospital needs. We then work with our partners in the US, including hospitals, non-profit supply recovery warehouses, and medical manufacturers to assemble these supplies and ship them to Ghana. All equipment is sent in working condition and with the correct transformers and adaptors to account for the difference in voltage in Ghana. Each shipment and surcharge is completely funded by the Ministry of Health in Ghana.

Our overall objective is to ensure that our medical donations are based on hospital needs and are sustainable. For each shipment of donated medical supplies we send, the Ghanaian Ministry of Health fully funds the cost of storing the supplies in warehouses in the US, shipping, and a surcharge that allows us to purchase electrical compatibility equipment for medical machines, conduct site visits in Ghana, and remain a sustainable organization with very low administrative costs. Our model saves our partner hospitals a large portion of their budgets that they would otherwise spend on supplies, allowing our partners to divert these funds towards additional health programs.

Our model prevents excess medical supplies from being discarded in landfills. Our partner hospitals also save substantial amounts of their budget, since the supplies they receive from MedPLUS cost significantly less than the market cost in Ghana, and can divert those savings towards other needed health programs. The inherent value of the supplies received greatly exceeds their retail value. These items are often life-saving necessities, allowing hospitals to provide critical services. We have witnessed boxes of sutures being unloaded from our delivery trucks and carried into operating rooms for immediate use on patients. Finally, the shipment of high-value medical equipment, such as anesthesia machines, enables hospitals to improve the scope and quality of care offered to their patients.

Our current customers are the medical directors, physicians, and administrators of the hospitals and health centers throughout the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern Regions of Ghana. These customers range in size from multi department hospitals to rural one-room clinics without electricity or running water. By serving a large portion of the health system in the country, our customer base also includes the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, which helps fund our shipments and organization.

This is carried out by conducting site visits at recipient hospitals and health centers in Ghana, developing prioritized request lists with hospital officials, filling these requests by coordinating with our partners in the US, facilitating the shipping of each container and its clearance upon arrival in Ghana, and following up to ensure that supplies are received in good condition. Additionally, we ensure funding for future containers by meeting with and sending reports to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health of Ghana.

Our peers include medical supply recovery organizations and the collection of philanthropies that have similar missions, but cover shipping costs with donations. However, not many organizations have a presence in Ghana. Some work primarily with hospitals and countries that cannot cover shipping costs while others send only one 40ft container each year. Ghana is currently able to buy their medical supplies. However, by partnering with MedPLUS they save a great deal of money, which can then be put towards expanding their services. They can afford to pay the fees for shipping which allows MedPLUS to function as a sustainable organization. We have welcomed collaboration with similar organizations and the need for medical supplies is so great that direct competition is not a foreseeable issue.

The most significant challenge MedPLUS Connect faces in the future is finding the funding to expand our organization. Due to the great need for medical supplies in Ghana, we hope to increase the number of shipments we send, which requires more administrative time in both countries. Due to a lack of funds to make our Executive Director full-time, our Executive Director is a part-time position, resulting in a high turnover rate. The high turnover provides a challenge for expanding MedPLUS due to the high learning curve associated with the position. We plan to continue seeking funding that will enable MedPLUS to increase the Executive Director position to full-time. We also plan to refine and further develop ways to increase our income generation, while still remaining stable and sustainable.

Since 2008 we have shipped 14, 40-foot containers to Ghana and are in the process of sending four more this year. Within the next year we hope to increase our number of shipments from 5 to 8 per year. We then hope to increase by 2 shipments per year. In two years MedPLUS Connect will have increased our shipments to 10 per year, a level at which we would be able to fully sustain ourselves and continue to function and expand based solely on the income from our shipment surcharges. Within the next four years we hope to expand our model to include other developing countries, such as Malawi and Uganda where we have already made contacts. We have been cautious to avoid expanding prematurely because we want to ensure that we have enough resources and time to sustain our relationships and maintain a high degree of communication with each of our recipients.

The value MedPLUS creates is most dramatically exhibited in the additional lives that can be saved by increasing the accessibility to medical supplies and equipment for hospitals in developing countries.

Since 2008, MedPLUS Connect has shipped 243,907 pounds of life saving medical supplies, including 241 hospital & examination beds, 207,088 exam & surgical gloves, and dozens of pieces of medical equipment ranging from autoclaves to anesthesia machines. We have partnered with 9 recipient hospitals and will partner with 3 more this year. We have also reached dozens of health centers throughout Ghana with several regional medical shipments, in which a container of supplies is distributed among several hospitals and health centers in that region.

For many hospitals in Ghana more than 60% of non-drug consumables are purchased in the private sector. Our model provides these supplies at a substantial discount and has therefore saved our partner hospitals a huge percentage of their annual budget that can now be used for other much needed health programs or hospital expansion.

In addition to life-saving consumables such as syringes, sutures, and IVs, MedPLUS Connect is able to send high-value medical equipment such as anesthesia machines, vitals monitors, and ultrasounds for a fraction of what these supplies are actually worth, giving hospitals access to these items that they would not otherwise be able to afford.

We quantify our impact by measuring the number of pounds of supplies shipped, which is also the number of pounds saved from landfills. We also measure the number of partner hospitals, the dollar value of supplies, the number of high-value items of equipment, and the increase in procedures done and patients served at our recipient hospitals. Last year we sent an oxygen concentrator to Karaga Polyclinic, a rural health center in the Northern Region. Dr. Abraham, the physician at Karaga, stated that the concentrator “works perfectly without fault…it actually came a day before we had a patient with severe chest infection and our oxygen cylinders were taken to Kumasi for refilling and the last cylinder had finished. I cannot imagine what would have happened if anything failed at that moment.”

The MedPLUS Connect model can be implemented in any region throughout Ghana. We’ve chosen to initially work in the Upper West, Upper East, and Northern Regions because these are the most impoverished regions and thus have a greater need for medical supplies. However, there are over 150 hospitals in Ghana. With further funding, our model could be expanded to include these hospitals in all regions of Ghana. In addition, our model could also be implemented in any peaceful developing country that lacks essential medical supplies but has a government that is willing and able to pay the cost of shipping recovered supplies from the US.

Each 40ft container MedPLUS ships is valued between $150,000- $250,000 and contains approximately 15,000 pounds of essential equipment and supplies. If we continue to ship five containers per year our annual projected impact includes sending at least 75,000 pounds of medical supplies worth $750,000-$1,250,000 to Ghana each year. Over the next three years we expect to ship more than 225,000 pounds of medical supplies worth $2,250,000- $3,750,000. We would also impact up to 5 new hospitals and 20 new health centers each year. However, the ultimate impact is the many lives that can be saved over the next 3 years with the receipt of much needed medical supplies. Moreover, if MedPLUS is able to expand and increase our number of shipments, our impact will grow with every additional shipment.

MedPLUS also plans small-scale fundraisers, such as running races or benefit nights, with the help of our volunteer interns. In the future we plan to invest a small amount of our capital from donations in a low risk fund as an additional means of income generation.

While the vast majority of our funding comes from our partners in Ghana, MedPLUS Connect also seeks donations from private individuals, friends, and family members as well as from foundations and grant making agencies. We also seek and have been awarded one-time grants from family foundations and philanthropic organizations for special projects that we have undertaken including, a computer resource center and a nutrition center built in partnership with local Ghanaian government. While we have the continued support of many individual donors and the praise of organizations we have been funded by in the past, MedPLUS Connect does not rely on philanthropy for the bulk of our operations so that we can remain a sustainable organization.

One of the innovative aspects of MedPLUS Connect is the sustainability we have built into our model. The surcharge we charge the Ghanaian Ministry of Health allows MedPLUS to function as a sustainable organization at its current scale. However, additional funds are needed to facilitate the expansion of MedPLUS. While demand is great for recovered medical supplies in Ghana and elsewhere, our staff is currently working above and beyond the hours we can currently compensate. To meet the increased demand we need to expand our staff to be able to manage double or possibly triple the number of shipments. We have researched and embarked on some possibilities for generated funds for expansion. We plan to continue our fundraisers and install them as annual events wherever possible. We also plan to continue seeking individual donations and grants. We intend to invest a small amount of our capital in a low risk fund as a means of producing additional income. These three avenues are slowly allowing us to accumulate funds to expand our organization. If we receive funding that enables us to expand our organization to include full-time employees, we plan that within 2 years, this increase in human capital will enable us to expand the number of shipments we send to 10 shipments per year, which will allow us to pay for these full time positions independently, based solely on the income from our shipment surcharges. Continually supplementing this basic funding with fundraisers, individual donations, and grants will enable us to do special projects and raise public awareness about our work.

YOLO Pies

YOLO Pies is a youth run pilot program that grows organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs and sells value added organic products to the local Washington DC community. Our pilot product, launched in fall 2012, was our award winning sweet potato pie.

TGIF - Turn Grease Into Fuel, which collects waste cooking oil (WCO) from residents and restaurants and refines it into biodiesel. Then the biofuel is distributed to financially stressed families.

The team convinced five towns / cities in RI and CT to place 10 WCO receptacles at their transfer stations. They distributed thousands of flyers / calendars and made over 50 presentations to students and adults. The project partnered with grease collectors, biodiesel refiners, and local charities to collect, refine and distribute biofuel to needy families. With 122 restaurants participating in the program, TGIF has collected 130,000 gallons of WCO and produced 100,000 gallons of biodiesel, which has helped heat 210 homes to date.

With the growing demand/requirement for green in design and construction, the building industry is experiencing challenges finding a qualified workforce. This bottleneck is due to a lack of entry-level green project experience available for professionals and students.

Thus, BOULD partners with community projects (ie a Habitat for Humanity home) and transforms it into a hands-on green building education experience for developing professionals and students. We connect a cohort of emerging architects, engineers, and builders seeking entry-level access to a local green project to capture that difficult to find green building experience -- while also building green, affordable homes for low-income families!

What are your organization's top three priorities in the next year?

Our company’s top three priorities are to:
1) Establish partnerships with schools, workforce centers, and building industry firms to develop a consistent pipeline of participants to receive our crucial green building training.
2) Expand our programming to 10 new major municipalities, serving 800 new students and supporting 100 new affordable homes.
3) Continue building new programming and piloting new delivery methods (online, condensed) .

BOULD is currently transitioning from a direct sales model -- to a partnership model with schools, universities, and businesses. Historically, the programming has be sold directly to consumers, interested in filling their professional "experience gap." This model was tough, given the amount of effort it took to attract, then sell each individual consumer. Thus moving forward, BOULD is developing a partnership model to work directly with major universities and community colleges to embed this crucial programming into undergraduate education. This route will streamline our operations and revenue cycle -- in that, we will be working with only one payment agent (the school) and we can anticipate a consistent crop of committed participants. We're currently exploring the structure of those relationships with 5 schools across 2 states -- and constantly learning about how to effectively navigate school/university relationships.

BOULD has worked with other social entrepreneurial accelerators to help refine our business model. However, we have never specifically tried to tackle this problem with a group of consultants. We have tried to approach these different groups with our internal team, but have had very little success to formalize a partnership.

225 Professionals graduated. We're focused equipping the next generation building professional with the skills and experience required to tackle the environmental challenges of today. Down the line, we're aiming build up a job placement pipeline -- and measure jobs created -- but presently, we're laser focused on building a better-trained and qualified work force. By 2015, we plan to have trained 800 professionals.

27 Affordable green Homes built. Each of the projects we transform into our "learning laboratories," ultimately becomes an affordable home for a low-income family. And, because we take additional green steps and have support from program participants -- these homes are incredibly affordable and environmentally friendly. By 2015, we plan to have supported 150 homes.

What is your project future impact after receiving professional support from American Express?

BOULD impact could double with the help and support of this program. Once we are able to establish and build out long lasting partnerships with institutions, we believe we can train 1,600 students and build over 300 LEED homes for low-income families by the end of 2014.

Sun State Organics, LLC believes the answer lies in a revised growing method. A method that does not require tractors, shovels, inorganic chemicals or massive amounts of water, energy and labor. The growing problem of electronic waste along with the growth of gadget and appliance market. E-waste posed environmental hazard due to physical-chemical properties of its components. E.g. leachate containing metal pollutes the soil and ground water, some batteries are explosive.
Despite the growth of e-waste production, an integrated system for proper management of e-waste is not yet on place. In the formal sector, service providers existed, but its outreach is limited to corporate clients. The informal sector has grown its own system down to household level, but its operation is not meeting health and environmental safety standard, thus is creating negative impact.

Bridging the formal and informal sector to create a more effective and proper e-waste management infrastructure. The formal sector has the proper standard and facility for e-waste processing, but lacking the system to expand its outreach down to the household level, i.e. the largest market share of end-consumer. Rather than starting from zero and competing with each other, the formal sector can use the system already existed in the informal sector and upgrade it to meet the proper management standard.

This solution will add double value to our company in a go. Business wise: increase of production scale along with the increase of e-waste volume collected. Corporate social responsibility: increase of safety and overall welfare of the informal sector. Environmental responsibility: minimization of environmental impact due to inappropriate processing by informal sector recycling operation.

E-junkyard, i.e. E-waste collection center will be the core to bridge formal and informal sector. Our company will provide education (e.g. how to do segregation, simple dismantling, health and environmental hazard of the waste) and proper facilities and equipment (e.g. shelter, gloves, boots). Informal e-waste collector will provide the man power (waste picker) and simple transport (e.g. pedicab) to operate the e-junkyard.
The commonly viewed as valuable from e-waste is PCB board, mainly due to its gold and copper content. In the informal sector, extraction of these metals involved unsafe use of mercury solution, in which the vapour was inhaled by the recycler, and the waste water is discarded freely to the environment.
As our company is specializing in PCB board recycling, we have established a recycling facility meeting health and environmental safety standard. We will buy this component to be recycled in our facility, thus reducing the environmental impact from recycling operation in informal sector. E-junkyard collector can sell the rest of the components to our network of authorised and certified recycling facility.

There are a small number of players currently in the formal sector. Companies licensed for hazardous waste management are sometimes involved in e-waste. Informal sector collector and recycler have existed for long, but using methods that bring health and environmental hazard.
What differentiate us is that we try to offer a “comprehensive solution” – from data confidentiality assurance (destruction of data in the e-waste component) to a certified responsible cradle to grave processing. This includes a tight safety control within our operation, and a thorough audit on partners’ operation in our network of authorised and certified recycling facility.

When TES-AMM was established in Indonesia, the business intention was to serve company/organization to properly treat their e-waste. However this business did not touch the biggest e-waste contributor which is households. Households’ e-waste are being collected and treated informally by e-junkyard. The main issue with e-junkyard is that they have little care for environmental aspect and worker’s safety/health issues.
Then on one day, a reporter ask me whether TES-AMM will force e-junkyard to stop operating. On that moment I thought, we can have a win-win solution by co-operating with e-junkyard without causing them to lose business. They can still collect e-waste from households and we will provide way to treat the e-waste properly.

As a guiding image: in the last 1 year, we have collected more than 1000 printers in colaboration with its manufacturer in a take back scheme. We are projecting to collect 2-3 times more if we are not focusing on only 1 brand but allow community to discard any brand of electronics.

Establish 1 e-junkyard pilot, in collaboration with existing e-waste collector/ recycler. The e-junkyard is aimed to serve an area of approx. one city, and will become a base for replication in other areas in Indonesia.
Operation in the junkyard includes collection, segregation, simple dismantling, and transportation to authorised recycler.

The existing “mafia” in informal sector waste management (including e-waste). Our plan is trying to collaborate with existing informal business unit and offering this alternative business unit as a package of community development proposition for the personnel involved.

This project will be part of marketing and CSR program. So it will be part of the overall company budgeting and prioritized work.

As this initiative is basically a business model, funding should be generated from result of proper e-waste processing. The initial investment and community development part might be funded as part of company’s CSR, but as the operation started it should generate funding through responsible recyclables trading. Another funding possibility is voluntary carbon market, although the mechanism still need further exploration.

I am leading the areas of Crop Enhancement and Water solutions at Syngenta. This area focuses on the new frontier in agriculture and food production based on combating environmental stresses including drought, heat, frost, floods etc which have plagued farmers around the world in recent years. I have been building the Water space at Syngenta over the past 4 years as a critical pillar in Syngetna's strategy and help feeding the world in the face of climate changes, a growing population and food security issues globally. I have been building businesses throughout my career. My previous roles have been to set up a therapeutic proteins pharmaceutical business for Crucell Holland NV (now J&J) and other startup activities in the internet/telecom/mobile spaces.

I am now responsbile for most new innovative technologies at Syngenta, the world leading agribusiness with >$13Bn in sales(2011). I develop innovative solutions and platforms which address the growing unresolved needs of farmers in areas that before my involvement have not really been a priority yet are already limiting global food production today. I have also built new business models and integrated solutions from other industries into Agriculture, provided a holistic approach to managing water and bridged between large companies (e.g GE, Levi's, Nestle) and startups that needed help in scale up and market access. The ciritical traits are persistance, stakeholder management, vision and a true value propostion for a commercial corporation to enable such innovation to get to market.

As demonstrated by the 2012 US drought and recent Russian drought of 2010, the world has been under growing water related stress which is already limiting Ag production. Farmers are under growing volatility of weather, water constraints, drying up wells, deeper pumping of ground water and thus rising costs, increased farm sizes, limited labor and overall growing complexity of farming. The opportunity for Syngenta to bring a comprehensive solution that will address these issues in the US Corn belt was identified in 2009 leveraging its technologies and adjacencies to enable farmers to get numerous benefits through better performance, optimizing water use across the farm, less volatility, reduced irrigation and application costs, better agronomic and marketing decisions etc.

The solution delivers optimal performance for Corn growers in the US Corn belt under water limited conditions through a comprehensive integrated offer which includes seeds, traits, complete crop protection and crop enhancement protocols, coupled with advanced irrigation technologies, sensing equipment and agronomic advice. The solution was readily accepted in 2012 by farmers , Ag channels, local agronomists and the industry based on its ease-of-use and improved performance which outyielded grower standard practices while using 25% less water. The solutions broad applicability across different crops and geographies gives it the potential to make a major contribution to countering water-related problems in the future.

the Solution is so innovative becuase it brings together many technologies and partners in a way that has never been done before. the customer sees one integrated solution without the burden of multiple vendors and the components work together to deliver synergy that has been very complex to integrate for an individual farmer or an individual company. We've brought all the pieces together for value creation to all stakeholders.

Different activities brought together made the solution viable and a reality in the market. First, the technologies need to be proven individually which was an activity my team performed in collaboration with Universities in the area, funded by my organization. Then, the combination was needed through ground breaking partnerships with irrigation, sensign and IT companies to integrate and make the solution "plug-n-play", simple and comprehensive, while considering the variaty of farmers, farms, equipment, climatic conditions and individual practices. For these to work, we partnered with channels and our customers to test, tweak and prove the solution in real conditions. These made the solution not only better, but also immediately adopted by some of the leading growers in the area (and the world).

Our partners include Lindsay Corp, one of the leading mechanized irrigation companies and as stated, our channel partners and growers. All of these enabled the success and these relationships are also at the foundation of further improvements and innovation which will continue to grow the solution further.

In the last few years we've seen more and more impact of droughts and climate change globally. The impact of reducing water while improving productivity in Agriculture and food production has been known however making it a reality through the use of many existing technologies in a compeling and ease to use way has been the real breakthrough. We've seen our own (syngenta) technologies work and improve farmer productivity over the years and have beneficial impact in drought conditions. We've also developed leading drought tolerant/water optimized Corn hybrids to help specifically in drought prone regions under water limitations yet bringing all the pieces together, truly looking at the problem from a customer's perspecitve and partnering with them allowed us to differentiate and bring to market a truly impactful solution which can, literally, change the world.

We've demostrated that the solution can deliver superior results to grower practices under 25% less water. Crop production for our US customers in the worst drought in 50 years was astonishing when compared to adjacent fields, competing technologies (even within the same farm).

Our plan is to address a significant portion in the US Corn belt as well as expand to other regions an crops. We're already getting significant pull from African countries and Eastern Europe, while other adapted small versions of the solutions are being deployed in developing countries with smaller farms (e.g. for vegetable growers in India).

It is already a success however, service levels of an integrated, multi-tiered, cross technology platform, at scale is a hard thing to maintain, not to mention while delivering continuous improvements and newer, better performance. These are the chanllenges yet also our competitive advantage.

until now I've been able to secure budget and resources to enable the creation and development of the solution through business development and internal stakeholders. From now, once it is already generating significant cash, it is commericallly independant and self sustaining by the local organization for further rollout. on a global level, my team continues to supprt with more enthusiasm across the company which makes it even more attractive. The project just won the Syngenta innovation award for 2012 and will continue to grow and expand.

Support for innovation is at the heart of Syngenta. Of course, there are always push backs, wanting to see returns, challenging the status quo and our ways of working, not to mention the other stakeholders which could be competing at some level with us. These are all relevant and important to address early and build the confidence, trust and show early success to satisfy the doubters.

The project of the social cooperative Domdoca non-profit organization is based on a qualifying aspect: respect for nature, not forcing the growth of vegetables, patient care and manual of the same, the construction of the so-called "short chain".

First of all, this project was born from a great opportunity: an extended loan by Boehringer Ingelheim of a plot of land.
We believe in the value of cooperation and synergies that can be realized from the encounter between profit and non-profit, aims to promote the production of quality food, offering more opportunities for health and supporting, through the Cooperative Domdoca type "B" the most disadvantaged social groups.
The project idea is also born from the collaboration of the Cooperative Domdoca with the project "Feeding Milan, energies for Change" Slow Food Italy.
Slow Food is a global organization founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat.
The innovation of this project is about a double crossing purpose: from one side the involvment of disadvantaged people in creating "health", preventing the disease starting from food: good for citizens and good for environment.
From an other side engage the population in creating a system of services to redefine the features of metropolitan area of South Milan as a pilot laboratory of sustainable, ethic and innovative food producing.
In summary, the project will create new opportunities for citizens of direct exchange with the South Milan Agricultural Park and its resources, in order to realize a repeatable model of excellence.

A key aspect of the development of the project is the inclusion and participation of the population in the entire production process, to self pick-up in the field of products that people can recognize as healthy and sustainable.
The project would also achieve its social goals through productive activities, mainly in the production and processing of agricultural products, by integrating work of socially disadvantaged people, in not less than 30% of workers.

The project would demonstrate how the inclusion and recovery work in social cooperative not only increase the social and psychological well-being of thousands of individuals and families but, far from being a cost to the community, provide significant savings of public resources already in short period.

The project would achieve its social goals through productive activities, mainly in the production and processing of agricultural products, by integrating work of socially disadvantaged people, in not less than 30% of workers.

Price and "short chain" next to authenticity and freshness are the hallmarks of our products.
The main purpose we propose through the use of a methodology to short chain is to contain and reduce the costs of products, limit and restrict the production steps for also lead to direct contact between the producer and the consumer.

Pedaling it Forward

SBici is a bike club at Santa Barbara High School (off shoot of Don's Net Cafe) and under the community guidance of Santa Barbara's Coalition Bici Centro bike co-op. We re-hab, tune up and either "earn" a bike for ourselves or donate the refurbished/recycled bikes to kids in need. We also sponsor bike to school days, Saturday mountain bike rides, and community events. As Edgar, who is one of our members says, "Get out of your car. Ride your bike. It's good for you and it's good for the environment. " The club is in its second year on our campus.

In remote communities across the world, people often do not have access to sustainable sources of income. By working with these communities to develop new natural products, we could help create jobs and provide an example to others that it is possible to use waste or other natural materials to create high quality eco-friendly products.

We aim to work with sustainable communities to develop and sell locally sourced natural products to increase income generation and job creation for the local people. We would help communities with any part of the natural product development cycle from R&D of new products, to marketing and sales strategy, to actually getting their product to customers via the network we are building. Our customer would be organizations similar to our current community partner in that they are focused on sustainable living and are working with natural dyes. Based on experience with our current pilot project, we would be able to work with the organization through the entire process of developing the product to bringing it to market. By promoting their products and increasing demand, they will be able to employ more people to produce the volumes to meet the demand as well as train them to develop the new products.

The current model is to work closely with the community on developing the new product based on previous experience and knowledge of the market. For our pilot project, we have been working to develop natural dye crayons with a community in Northern India. We used one of the byproducts of another process they have and utilized local materials to develop the current product. We are in the midst of pilot sales for this product. Having worked on this from scratch, it seems like a process that could ultimately be adapted to other communities around the world.

Working on sustainable product development will greatly benefit the communities we are working with in terms of providing jobs but it will also benefit everyone else because these communities would be able to show that it is possible to use waste or other natural materials to create high quality products.

After spending over two and a half months in India working with the people in the community to develop the natural dye crayons, we spoke to potential customers to get some feedback on the product and found that they were interested in not only giving us feedback but also in purchasing sets. We have been working on getting the crayons into stores and also see potential for other natural art products which are non-toxic.

The crayons are currently being sold in India but we are still working out the logistics of selling in the US. The profit will enable the community to hire more people to produce the crayons.

My first business was shoveling snow when I was 10, at 16 I started my own landscaping company, at 22 I started my own construction company, .
I attended the University of VT for one year in 94-95. I took and class on the environment. I learned about all the problems, but no solutions.
So I read books.
I learned permaculture from Fukuoka, radical ecology from Bookchin, globilization from Norberg-Hodge, mycology from Stamets, I learned education from Friere, educational inequality from Kozol, french intensive gardening from Jeavons and Coleman I learned Buddhism from Hahn and commerce from Hawkins.
What I found were ideas, which became solutions.

Each year for my birthday, or Christmas, my mother would buy me a puzzle. The ones with a thousand pieces were, and still are, my favorites. The only puzzles that i enjoyed doing were of Norman Rockwell paintings. He was, and still is, my favorite artist. I would sit for hour upon hour studying the nuances of color and light, wondering how anyone could paint like that, all while putting the pieces where they go. This youthful penchant for puzzles has influenced the way I perceive the world and how it is I came to my "Aha" moment. A moment, which for me is still happening. A moment that is being built upon the momentum of a lot of hard work and years of wandering. In 2004 I went to study for a month with Paul Stamets as an internship, while working towards my degree in Biology (microbiology). I was touched by Paul's genuineness and sense of purpose.

As of now, I have been networking, working on the edge pieces of this proverbial puzzle.
My solution is actually an anti impact solution. That is, it aims to help transform waste streams into nutrient streams. And by so doing, anticipates alleviating some of the burden which we have bestowed upon our children, while simultaneously empowering people to work with nature and eachother.

I have taken the free training courses offered by the ecommerce platform Magento to familiarize myself with how to run the website. I have consulted with web designers, marketing specialists, social networking companies, and branding consultants, all in an effort to leverage internal resources. Using my time to work with experts in there fields save money and costly mistakes, creating a positive feedback loop

Everyone I have spoke with thinks I have a sound idea and am capable of developing and implementing it.

Graduating in 1995 with a degree in Accounting and Finance, I was first in my family to graduate; a joyful moment for my parents who left Pakistan in the 1960's to earn some money and return home one day! Being diagnosed dyslexic at university explained my creativity and vision, as well as some of the limiting factor to my earlier educational progress.

I founded my Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Consultancy in July 2002 after an early career with global corporates in Finance, FMCG and Telecoms. I had learned a lot and wanted to try build a small company to help businesses be better corporate citizens.
I have been successful in many ways, employing some great graduates, interns and experts working with prized clients such as government, corporates, SME's and European clients.

I have worked with large organisations on projects that need 'fixing' and speeding up. I use my nimble, direct, 'imagine no borders' and 'win win' approach to build solutions that deliver.

I am willing to go the extra mile and persevere, keep going until the job gets done and usually with very little resources.

I am able to connect ideas from different sources together and 'see' a solution. I think my most important characteristic is to explain complex issues in a simple form.

Over 6 million people live in 'Fuel Poverty' in the UK and this figure is rising as energy prices rise and the economic crisis deepens. The most financially, physically and emotionally deprived people have to make harsh choices every day around feeding themselves or heating/powering their home. The most vulnerable are those that live in the 1.5 million 'solid wall' constructed Social Landlord owned homes. This issue is not unique to the UK and is repeated across the world. My issue is how such communities can reduce their need for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer to reduce to numbers that die in such conditions (7,800 in the UK in 2011, World Heath Organisation) by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes and reducing their need to heat/cool in changing weather.

I have invented (patent pending) a new External Wall Insulation system that cab be quickly installed on homes. Current systems are complex, expensive, require highly skilled installers, can only be installed in fine weather and require complex logistics. The Envirup system is a factory manufactured modular system. These allow for most buildings to be insulated within half the time of current systems, by relatively low skilled installers in almost all weather conditions. The insulation performance is the slightly better than current systems, so the residents of the average UK home will save around £430.00 in home heating costs per year, 9,480 kilowatt hours and 1754 kg of carbon dioxide per year.

My system also has unique economic benefits due to its simplicity.We can create more new jobs from within the communities we install the system. These will include apprenticeships for young and re-training for those our of work for longer. Start-ups can become franchised installers.

We will utilise the skills of existing manufacturers of building products in declining sectors and give them new growth opportunities, through licensing our Intellectual Property.The current handful of products in this sector offer small variations on current systems, We have created the industry's technology leap!

Homes with solid brick or concrete walls absorb the outside temperature. So in winter: making the inside very difficult to heat and in summer: very difficult to cool. Our insulation system is quickly (four days for an average home) installed on the outside and radically reduces the effect of outside temperature on the inside of the building. In the winter, the solid walls become a 'thermal' store of heat from inside the house and reduce the internal heating required by half. In summer, the invention prevents solar gains through the walls and keeps the inside of the house much cooler.

Our role as inventor will be to work with the licensed manufacturing partners in each of the countries that will make the system, help them to develop a network of certified/franchised installer businesses and create training centres in colleges to teach people to survey, sell, design and install the system on residential properties (also small non-domestic properties as we develop) to the highest standard.

Insulation sector in the UK is worth around £1.5 bn p.a., largely made up of a few large manufacturers, a handful of larger installers and many installation contractors. However, the external wall insulation sub sector is the smallest part, worth around £50 million per year, but the fastest growing part. It is a new and immature market. The main product manufacturers are large multinationals (St Gobain, Kingspan, Celetox, Xtratherm, BASF) creating a reputable market, but with little innovation on the form of new consumer products to insulate homes. They will compete hard against our new product with their huge reputations and marketing budgets, but market growth ahead will create space for new entrants and we will aim to position our product as 'complementary' not simply an 'alternative'.

I have been running my business for ten years, and found a 'gap' when I saw the effect of cold weather on the bedroom of my young son and listening to a similar story from my mother about her bedroom. Both properties had walls facing the cold perimeter of the house. Whilst my mother and I could turn up the heating, I suddenly realised the huge problem for those less fortunate. Over the following year I developed my invention after considering currently available technology and how its complexity was its own barrier to success; like IBM home computers, before Microsoft 'Windows' made computers simpler and easier to use.

Only after reading about the 6 million people living in fuel poverty, did I realise how big a problem I was touching and how many lives this could improve. I really had to take a breath when the numbers hit me like a gust of wind passing on a cold and wet day, I was now on the pathway to make my invention reality in the UK and then as far and as fast as I could.

We are in development phase, so the invention is currently 'all potential'. I have spent a lot time working with industry experts, academia, installation experts, utility suppliers, potential manufacturers and social housing owners to fine tune the product with their expertise. We have been informed that this product could be the 'revolution' that could create the biggest single reduction in energy consumption ever, saving up to 45% of home heating costs in one installation. Whilst solar and wind technology are essential for a more balanced energy mix, our solution will ensure that energy is better used.

I have received a letter from potential installer who could transform their business through this product. I have received a letter from the Social Landlord of 29,000 homes who believes this invention could help them reduce the effects of fuel poverty for their most vulnerable tenants. I have support from my local council who want us to manufacturer locally to drive economic growth.

We aim to :
-Grow from being a direct employer around 5 people from 2 currently.
-Licence the intellectual property to one UK manufacturer.
-Create over 500 new manufacturing jobs.
-Train and certify 2 large installers and around 20 small-medium installers throughout the UK.
-Create over 500 new jobs within these existing and new companies.
-Assist 10 social enterprises to become certified installers
-Including the first jobs for 200 for recent school/college graduates.
-Installing the system on over 46,000 UK homes.
-Reducing UK carbon footprint by over 67,000 tonne of CO2 per year.
-Saving home owners around £21,850,000 in energy bills per year.
-Licensing the invention in three to five countries in Europe and repeating UK model.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

We have little experience of licencing Intellectual Property through the market with large manufacturers, installers and multinational energy suppliers. They have their structured approach to business which is multilayered and inevitably slower than my small company.
We have therefore decided to take support from seasoned experts in the various stages of business process that we are going through. It can be a particular issue to find such support too. We are also being very careful who we partner with, looking for strategic fit, cultural fit, high motivation and enthusiasm as the critical deciding factors after financial, technological and logistical capabilities are evaluated. One of the reasons to enter this competition is to help the company along its 'success' pathway.

Qual é o benefício ou valor que você está criando para o seu negócio?

The business model is to licence the I.P. to manufacturers globally. The manufacturers will therefore pay a fair initial licence fee followed by on-going royalty fees of £18m out of £204m installed product value. This will create long term sustainable revenue for this business. We will invest revenue creating training centres in technology colleges throughout the countries our products is made. Our 'free' training will particularly favour non academic students, to creating sustainable 'eco' careers and supporting new installation start up companies.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

EnvirUP used its intangible assets & capability to develop the inventions technical characteristics. We filed our first UK Patent application in Dec 2011 ourselves. Then checked the products viability with our industry and academic connections, We used the companies very limited resources to develop the idea into a pre-production prototype and technical specifications with local university support. Through 2012 we took the product through the manufacturing to customer supply chain, to confirm the viability of the product and gain interest from potential manufacturers, installers, housing stock owners and energy suppliers (all under signed Non Disclosure Agreements). With a small government grant we filed UK and International (PCT) patent drafted by a patent lawyer in December 2012.

We originally sought seed funding to develop the project, but found small investors to prefer cash generating investments, so we carried on fully utilising all our own reserves and completing the pre-manufacturing phase of the project. Our strategy is to partner with an existing manufacture with skills, capacity and funds to make the product and will 'issue' a UK licence to a leading manufacturer (we are talking to 4 potential companies). The initial Licence Fee will fund my company to take the product through product certifications and begin building the sales and installation network, Once the the product is being sold and installed, EnvirUP will benefit from royalty fees, which will fund our training centres to support our manufacturer and find new manufacturers overseas.

It makes no sense for us to develop a business plan to raise tens of millions of pounds to build a manufacturing plan and establish an nationwide installation business, when we have found local manufacturers, with the capability and capacity to manufacture our product. We also found businesses that have the technical capability to install our product with only a small amount of training. Partnering makes sense, share the rewards and is sustainable.

Qual apoio interno você obteve para seu projeto? Que tipo de críticas você enfrentou?

Before spending time and money on the project, we completed our own technical, financial and market review first, confirming our decision to invest our own funds in the project. The much tougher part was building the external network, which took longer than expected and has been a bigger financial drain than planned. But we have accomplished far more using our own resources, learning and progressing the project further than we expected, it was well worth the effort.

O que faz de você um intraempreendedor? Quais são as habilidades, capacidades e características pessoais que fazem de você um intraempreendedor?

A capacidade de realizar e reinventar. Para realizar é necessário primeiro planejar e depois engajar pessoas para atingir os objetivos e metas propostos. Já para reinventar continuamente é necessário ser creativo, sonhador e prático pois de nada adianta produtos e processos sem utilidade ou que não sejam acessiveis para a empresa. As qualidades que possuo para tornar tudo isso possivel é a capacidade analitiica, liderança, criatividade e acima de tudo persistência.
O mais importante no entanto não é nenhuma destas caracteristicas, mas um valor que permeia todas elas e funciona como uma bussola que norteia todas as minhas ações, a ética. Desta forma acredito que tenha as qualidades citadas acima, mas sobretudo sou ético com o mundo e não espero menos que isso para o mundo que quero.

Como vender Sustentabilidade do titulo é uma pergunta e afirmação. Primeiro porque não tenho uma formula mágica para isso mas funciona na Beraca e já colhemos bons frutos de nossas práticas em sustentabilidade. O problema é como integrar sustentabilidade no núcleo vital da empresa, fazendo com que sustentabilidade agregue valor ao negócio ao ponto de transformar o produto ou serviço que vendemos, passando a entregar sustentabilidade. Para tanto, precisamos tentar resolver em nossa cadeia de valor problemas como desmatamento da Amazônia, geração de renda, engajamento dos stakeholders, condições dignas de trabalho, redução dos desperdicios e aumento da eficiência nos processos, combate a todas as formas de corrupção e preservarção da biodiversidade Brasileira.

A Solução: Qual é a sua solução? Seja específico!

A solução foi criar um plano estratégico de longo prazo em que nossos stakeholders participassem das decisões da empresa, aumentassemos a qualidade dos compromissos assumidos e tivessemos metas de eco eficiencia mais robustas. Vamos deixar claro que não tenho a intenção de resolver os problemas como um todo, mas pretendo ser um agente catalizador mobilizando a empresa nesta direção e servindo como benchmarking á outras empresas. Nossa solução é inovar na forma como se enxerga sustentabilidade dentro da empresa, tornando todos os processos sustentáveis para que o valor entregue aos clientes seja a propria sustentabilidade. O planejamento tem mudado todas as areas da empresa para que sustentabilidade seja um valor presente em todas as ações da cadeia de valor, desde a compra da matéria prima e seleção dos fornecedores, passando por processos produtivos inovativos e por fim vendendo produtos e serviços que carreguem a sustentabilidade dentro do valor percebido pelos nossos clientes.

A Beraca atua em 4 segmentos de negócios: Tratamento de água, Cosméticos, Ingredientes para alimentos e Ingredientes para uso veterinário. Nos ramos que atuamos, aumentamos o nível de exigência dos setores com sustentabilidade, tendo ganhado o reconhecimento de prêmios nacionais e internacionais por nossas iniciativas. Nossos clientes e fornecedores são também parceiros e participam de muitos de nossos projetos, ajudando a criar novos parâmetros para a industria que atuamos.

O Modelo: Nos mostre um exemplo específico de como sua solução faz a diferença; inclua suas principais atividades.

Quando tratamos nossos stakeholders como parceiros, não pode haver somente palavras mas gestos concretos. Através de um planejamento corporativo de como agregar valor aos produtos através da sustentabilidade, identificamos uma comunidade local de pescadores na ilha do Marajó que poderiam fornecer sementes nativas para nossos produtos de cosméticos. Desta forma apoiamos esta comunidade na criação de uma cooperativa e chamamos nosso cliente L'oreal para juntar forças. A Beraca fez a doação do terreno e a L'oreal fez a construção da sede da cooperativa, possibilitando que uma comunidade que antes vivia somente da pesca e passava por necessidades na época do defeso dos peixes pudesse criar novas oportunidades de renda que não fossem o desmatamento e fabricação de carvão. Dentro do programa da Beraca de Valorização da Biodiversidade, auxiliamos a cooperativa em todos os processos de gestão e engajamento dos cooperados, utilizando o manejo sustentável, pagamento dos impostos e certificando-os como produtores orgânicos. Vimos porém que podiamos fazer mais e em parceria com a cooperativa solicitamos em nome deles um projeto de desenvolvimento local que trouxe uma prensa mecânica e treinamento, possibilitando agregar valor aos produtos fornecidos. Como só nos interessa parcerias de longo prazo, a cinco anos entramos para a UEBT com planos publicos assumidos para o comércio justo de produtos da biodiversidade e para 2013 firmamos parceria com o GIZ do governo alemão, que possibilitara levar treinamentos e cursos não são para o Marajó, como muitas outras regiões Amazônicas.

O Mercado: Quem são os seus pares e concorrentes? Identificar os outros que também estão trabalhando para solucionar as mesmas necessidades que você e o que você faz de diferente em relação a eles. Quais seriam os desafios impostos por esses concorrentes que impactariam no seu sucesso ou crescimento?

Como atuamos em diferentes segmentos, temos diferentes competidores, Mas estes também são parceiros quando participamos juntos na construção de um biocomércio ético na Amazônia e discutimos como aumentar o nível de exigencia dos nossos clientes. Mas sei que é preciso fazer mais, então atuamos fortemente e de maneira singular no engajamento das comunidades locais na Amazônia promovendo seu desenvolvimento. Através de diversas ações programadas para 2013 como um encontro de tres dias entre Beraca, comunidade, ONGs e governo, oficinas de sustentabilidade e capacitação tecnica, entre outras, iremos fortalecer nossos fornecedores para que estes sejam o mais autonômo possivel. Este investimento no fortalecimento de relações retorna em valor agregado ao produto tornando-o diferenciado.

Sempre tive o desejo de fazer diferente e melhor, mas em 2010 consegui uma bolsa de estudo e fui fazer um MBA em sustentabilidade na Itália. Neste momento que tomei coragem de largar a vida no Brasil para estudar sustentabilidade e trabalhar com algo novo, foi para mim quando começei a descobrir como se podia vender sustentabilidade. Assumi o desafio dentro da Beraca, que ja havia tomado a decisão e caminhava na direção de ser sustentável havia algum tempo. Desta forma repensei e reformulei toda estrutura em sustentabilidade da empresa, passando por governança corporativa, ecoeficiencia, compromissos corporativos, engajamento de stakeholders, posicionamento de negocio, cadeia de valor, relatório de sustentabilidade, etc... Através de um novo modelo pretendo que a empresa não precise mais de mim, pois todos os seus produtos e processos serão voltados para isso. Dessa forma sustentabilidade agregará valor ao produto de forma que venderemos a própria sustentabilidade.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

Beneficios para mais de 50 comunidades locais na Amazônia, milhares de hectares de floresta preservados, mais de 1.600 familias com renda extra acessada através do manejo sustentável da floresta, participação dos stakeholders na formulação de metas e planejamento estratégico, aumento da eficiencia energética nas fabricas, redução do uso de água e substituição por fontes alternativas, como chuva e reuso, aumento na reciclagem dos residuos solidos, mas principalmente respeito e reconhecimento de diversos stakeholders, principalmente os funcionários, agentes catalizadores de todas as mudanças.

Qual é o impacto previsto nos próximos 1 a 3 anos?

O projeto irá se expandir consideravelmente, sendo que já foi premiado com o prêmio Seeds Initiative da ONU e World Challenge da BBC Britânica, alem de diversos outros prêmios no Brasil. Meu objetivo é obter o reconhecimento do mercado como a empresa média mais sustentavel do Brasil. Para isso, precisaremos atingir diversas metas que trarão como impacto, mudança para matrizes energéticas mais limpas, repartição de beneficios com comunidades amazônicas, gerenciamento e participação dos stakeholders nas decisões e planejamento da empresa, mudança das areas na cadeia de valor dos produtos, transparência nas informações da empresa, mas principalmente, espero que os bons resultados possam ser replicados por outras empresas, aumentando a escala de boas iniciativas para um publico maior.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

A principal barreira que precisamos vencer é o próprio tema deste projeto: Como vender Sustentabilidade?!. Sabemos que precisamos criar valor aos nossos produtos e nosso maior pilar na empresa hoje é o desenvolvimento sustentável, porém os clientes tambem precisam comprar esta idéia e enxergar um real valor adicionado pela sustentabilidade. Sei que isso não é fácil, e convece-los superando a idéia de custo será o maior desafio. Para suprir estas barreiras aperfeiçoarei os projetos ja em andamento, que se centrarão em tres pilares: Compromissos Corporativos, Engajamento de Stakeholders e ecoeficiência, enquilibrando processos de sustentabilidade que trazem redução de custo no longo prazo com processos que aumentam o custo, mas agregam valor ao produto final.

Qual é o benefício ou valor que você está criando para o seu negócio?

Os beneficios serão duradouros, porque permite a empresa continuar tendo uma fonte de recursos naturais explorados de maneira sustentável. Sustentabilidade agregando valor aos produtos irá fortalecer a marca da empresa, aumentando os ativos intangiveis e valor da empresa. Engajando os stakeholders de forma ética e transparente estou gerenciando os riscos do negócio e criando parcerias de longo prazo que agregam valor aos nossos clientes e fornecedores;e através de compromissos assumidos, nos diferenciamos no mercado que atuamos.

Como você está alavancando recursos internos (fundos, tempo, conhecimento, etc) para apoiar esta iniciativa?

Atualmente a empresa investe 3,2% de seu faturamento liquido em sustentabilidade e temos conseguido diversos parceiros para nossas ações, como o GIZ do governo alemão, prefeituras municipais, governo estadual, governo federal, FINEP, entre outros. Mas o mais improtante é que a decisão de sermos sustentáveis foi tomada pelos acionistas da empresa, dando á minha area todas as condições necessárias para planejar, executar e entregar os resultados propostos. Além de uma estrutura de governança corporativa que permite todas as areas participarem da decisão com acuracia na prestação de contas e resultados esperados. Para alavancar engajamento interno, insiro-os nas decisões de sustentabilidade e capitalizo os beneficios que cada área tem com as diversas ações, aumentando o engajamento interno.

A empresa tem crescido nos ultimos 10 anos acima da média de crescimento do PIB Chinês e sempre reservado mais de 3% de seu faturamento para ações em sustentabilidade. Esta é a principal fonte de recursos do planejamento da empresa pros próximos cinco anos. As fontes secundárias de longo prazo são feitas através de parcerias em projetos especificos, com clientes, fornecedores, governo e instituições internacionais. Importante frizar que estas parcerias são feitas visando sempre o longo prazo, onde esperamos que os beneficios mutuos resultantes destas parcerias possam ser colhidos continuamente, representando uma otima alocação de recursos.

Conte-nos sobre suas parcerias dentro da empresa e externas que são fundamentais para o sucesso do seu projeto.

Internamente, trabalho muito proximo das areas criticas e que afetam os principais stakeholders da empresa. Desta forma dividi as decisões com um comite gestor que auxilia e se engaja nos principais projetos de sustentabilidade. Externamente, construi uma rede com empresas, ONGs e instituições que permite a troca de experiências e muitas vezes a conjução de esforços na resolução de problemas comuns.

Qual apoio interno você obteve para seu projeto? Que tipo de críticas você enfrentou?

Os principais patrocinadores das minhas ações são os acionistas e diretoria executiva. Dentro do processo de governança, eles assumiram o papel de patrocinadores de sustentabilidade, dando poder politico para que o planejamento seja executado. O maior entrave a ser superado é o engajamento das lideranças internas e resistências em relação a sair de uma zona de conforto e encarar um ambiente mais desafiador para a transformação em áreas sustentáveis.

This world, where 2 billion people live in poverty partially due to lack of sustainable income sources, has a need for companies that provide solutions instead of problems. At Adonya Imports we are invested in more than just the beautiful jewelry and accessories we import, but the people and culture behind the craft. Many of our pieces are made from sustainable seed production in Ecuador which can be an effective instrument for reducing poverty and discouraging deforestation. According to the UN FAO Ecuador has lost 197,600 hectare of forest cover per year between 1990 and 2010. By providing a new source of income that encourages environmentally safe practices, we can provide a steady, lucrative and personally rewarding employment option that will greatly improve the lives of the artisans.

We work with artisans of marginalized communities who are unable to create sufficient income in their local markets. We believe that fair employment is the most sustainable way for people in these communities to emerge from poverty. Our aim is to provide artisans with a steady source of income, so they can shift focus from immediate needs, such as where their next meal will come from, and begin to plan for the future. Every purchase represents a step towards a better life for artisans around the world.

Adonya Imports aims to have positive social impact on varying levels. Most directly, we provide the artisans we work with a chance for a rewarding employment opportunity that is sustainable all year. Many of the artisans are those previously left out of the workforce, like women and disabled. By creating more demand than their local markets can provide, we are introducing new streams of income that will not only improve the lives of the artisans and their families but also the local community, We are also committed to supporting artisans that use low impact materials. There is an art behind turning nuts, seeds and plant fibers into amazing wearable works-of-art and Adonya Imports aims to share these treasures with the rest of the world.

By creating a brand that combines style and sustainability, we hope to create a rippling effect of opportunity and empowerment for the artisans and the consumers. We provide our customers with a convenient and fashionable way to contribute to positive social change. They will be attracted by the unique and practical products and will be engaged by the story and culture behind the craft.

The Community: Define your community, local or international, that you will work on behalf of. What population is affected? Are there other organizations working in this space?

Adonya Imports works on the behalf of the international artisans and claims a global community. While we will work to create economic stimulation in the developing nations we import from, we will also work with local communities to raise awareness about the living situation around the world and show how we can help. Social entrepreneurship is the core of Adonya Imports and we want to show others that they can "See the Need. Be the Solution." (A phrase I want to turn into an empowerment movement).
I am happy to say that this business model is currently being used by many companies; some have store fronts and even more are solely online, like Ten Thousand Villages. This means that more artisans are now able to create enough income to support themselves and their families.

História: O que inspirou o seu empreendimento? Por quê?

My path is one that is just beginning, but one that I have been leading up to my whole life. I have always had a passion for helping people, a desire to make a difference but seeing where I belong hasn’t always been clear. It wasn’t until recently, that I realized how I would meet my potential; starting my own company. I started Adonya Imports with an idea in my head that has grown and developed into an insatiable desire to create not just a company, but a cause. While visiting family in Ecuador I was inspired by the impoverished artisans who find the resources to create such beauty despite the conditions in which they live. After returning to the states, I felt obligated to create something that would help these people and have a lasting impact. I dream of a world in which this socially conscious business model is how every company operates. A world full of global citizens that realize their potential to create positive change by their everyday decisions.

What is your long-term vision for your Venture?

My long term vision for Adonya Imports is to create a brand that represents passion, tradition and opportunity, be recognized as a leading style icon in the fashion industry and provide co-funding for innovative social improvement projects around the world.

O que você quer realizar em seu primeiro ano?

Adonya Imports’s goal for the first year of operation is to profit $60,000 after all expenses and disbursements including a $30,000 social improvement project. We will look for a first project in Ecuador, where my mom, Maryanne Chiriboga, lives and works in development. She is the Fund Raising and Program Development Administrator for a group of artisans in the rural village of Muisne in Ecuador. “Manos al Coco” has 15 participants of varying levels of commitment, many of them single mothers, a few are disabled adults, all with unstable income of less than $2,000 a year. The needs of the participants are related to the situation of poverty and lack of opportunity in the area. The over-riding need is to feel in control of their lives, to feel they have the power to improve their lives and the lives of their children. The majority of the women in this project have electric service in their homes, but clean water is and has been a dominating problem for the community. Much of the poor live in areas susceptible to daily flooding that causes an accumulation of other problems. The water that is provided by the government is bacteria laden, the wells are filled with trash and other debris, the poor are forced to resort to rainwater collection without the knowledge and practice of sanitary containment (http://ccondem.org.ec World Wetlands Day 2008). Children are often absent from school due to illnesses or the need to work and contribute to the family income.

Como é que vai definir o sucesso no curto prazo (1-12 meses)?

In the short term, success will be when monthly expenses are paid for and profits are realized so we can begin to save for our first year social improvement project.

In the long-term (1 year?)

I will view Adonya Imports as successful when we are able to provide funding for entrepreneur and financial classes for the artisan groups we work with.

Como você vai medir o sucesso?

For me, success is not an obtainable goal, it is a mind set. I feel successful today, even without sales. I feel calm, I feel taken care of, I feel lucky. I am surrounded by amazing people who have shown so much support and love for what I am trying to achieve. Ive got this opportunity to potentially benefit communities around the world and will ultimately be getting paid to shop! While I am always looking to grow and do better, personally and in business, I am happy with where I am and know that every sale I make, small or big, is one step in the right direction.

Why?

I don't want to chase this idea of "success" my whole life when I can feel it NOW.

This proposed Livelihood intervention will provide Livelihood opportunities for 100 economically backward women. The focus will be on developing the economic standards thereby better social standards exclusively for the children holistic development like better education, health, Nutrition etc. Also the intervention will provide a common platform for the women to discuss their problems thereby setting the development goals for the family towards a better future for their children.

The Rainbow Recycling Campaign

The Rainbow Recycling Campaign is a project to promote consumer and manufacturing responsibility of consumable products world wide. My solution is to use representative colors and symbols that can easily be recognized anywhere in the world. Representative colors and symbols provide a visual cue for anyone to properly recycle disposable products. A RED container represents metals, as metals require extreme heat to melt. A GREEN container would represent paper products as paper products come from trees. A YELLOW container would represent organic products grown from the yellow light of the sun.
