What makes your idea unique?

NUTRITION: Many people in this world face cases of nutritional imbalance that lead them to health complications. This is very serious in the developing countries, so this tree can be the answer because it needs only a conducive climate. The uses of this tree are as unique as the names it is known by, such as clarifier tree, horseradish tree and drumstick tree (referring to the large drumstick shaped pods) and in East Africa it is called "mother's best friend”. There are literally hundreds of uses for this tree and most parts of moringa tree, i.e leafs, flowers, pods, seeds and roots are used and they are known for their nutritional and medicinal values.SOLACE CBO is working to make sure the tree is known, planted and used worldwide.

HOPE:For SOLACE CBO to succeed in this campaign, we started working with the local group and initiatives, support groups of the people living with HIV and AIDS together with the local radio station(radio mang'elete) to identify all the people living with complicated illnesses and make them try the tree. This has enabled many patients to come out and share their testimonies, and by so doing, the stigma has now dropped.

NETWORKING: SOLACE CBO is also working with the ministries of HEALTH, AGRICULTURE and NGOs like AMREF MAANISHA, INNOVATIVE FUND and KENYA BURIAL OF STATISTICS, so that they can help in research and build trust to those patients who volunteer to work with us and at the same time make them feel wanted, empowered and valued.

ECONOMY: This tree grows only on the areas with hot climate like in the tropics and people from those other areas will have to buy it from the areas it is grown. SOLACE CBO is now developing a website for the entire world to know about it and how to process or purchase it if it cannot be grown in their area. Also this tree does well in the areas with small rains, so there is hope for them to start having something to do for their health and economy.

What impact have you had?

PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV and AIDS:(PLWHAS) SOLACE CBO initially used to conserve the environment and in the course of their work, they identified this moringa tree and decided put it into test by starting a program called RECOVERY PROGRAM, whereby we supplied moringa powder to the most serious PLWHAS in the community. Our work was noticed and recommended by an NGO called AMREF MAANISHA and sponsored the supply of moringa powder to people living with HIV and AIDS and so far we have managed to supply it to three support groups with a total of 140 members and most of them have improved their CD4 count up to more than 700 within a period of one year.

SUPPORT GROUPS: Many people have started going for testing for HIV, something they were reluctant to do, but now they are very willing and then join the support groups or form new ones.

OVCs: SOLACE CBO helps children without parents and are vulnerable whereby have managed to give this moringa powder to 10 children living with HIV and AIDS and within one year, we were amazed to find that five of them turned out to be negative.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT: The ministries of Public Health, Agriculture and Water are now working with us through community health workers and field extension officers to mobilize farmers to start planting and using this tree.

FARMERS OF MORINGA: SOLACE CBO with the help of an INNOVATION FUND by micro enterprise support program trust, have supplied moringa seeds to more than 3000 farmers who have started planting and it's doing well.

SOLACE CBO started processing, parking and selling the packed moringa powder and so far have earned more than kshs 500,000 (five hundred thousand Kenya shillings)and the demand is getting high.

Problema

FAMINE: Many parts of Eastern province of Kenya is semi- arid with inconsistent rains and it is seriously affected by the effects of climate change and most of the people in this area are poor, stricken by famine every now and then, and many a times they depend on relief food.

LACK OF THE RIGHT NUTRITION: People of this area mostly plant maize and unfortunately the maize grows the poison called aflatoxin from time to time, so at the end these people cannot either sell these maize to buy other foods or eat them to get the right nutrition.

STIGMA: The area of Makueni and Kibwezi districts, where we are operating is bisected by the highway from Mombasa Island where we have the sea port to Nairobi and all the way to Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi and there is a lot of prostitution which leads many people of this area are infected and affected with HIV and AIDS but they feared to be tested.

CASH CROP: Moringa oliefera tree can do good in this climate and become the main cash crop of the area if we succeed in making the use of its products known all over the world,so that part where it cannot do well, they can buy it from us.

Actions

SOLACE CBO with the help of partners is training TOTs to empower the community with knowledge about the nutritional and medicinal value of this tree to them and how they can plant, harvest and process it for use. We are also using the community radio to do this empowerment and so far we are doing well.

SOLACE CBO with the help of partners is supplying parked moringa powder to more than 150 people living with HIV and AIDS, set five demonstration centers for farmers to learn about this plant and how to plant, process and use it.

SOLACE CBO is working with the ministry of health, agriculture, NGOs, CBOs and other community groups in the area to make this plant known and already made a step because we are now supported by amref maanisha and micro enterprise support program trust and already we have set five demonstration nursery beds in different centers in Kibwezi District.

SOLACE CBO has also opened a shop in the town were people can access the parked moringa powder at an affordable price and we are now in the process of developing a web site so that people from far can learn about moringa from solace and even purchase it online.

Results

The issue of HIV and AIDS will not be a problem again to this region and may be to the entire world and at the same time those people living with the virus in this area will be productive and able to manage their health. Also the spread of this virus in this area will be reduced because poverty will be also reduced.

The issue of aflatoxin will be solved in this area because people will not depend on growing maize instead they will buy maize from those areas without aflatoxin with the money they will get from selling moringa oliefera. The area will be developed and at the same time boost the economy of the country.

Lastly, most health problems in the area will be solved because people will get the right nutrition because of taking moringa oliefera which will supplement all those nutrients missing in their daily food taking.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

First year

To make every farmer in Kibwezi district to have more than two hundred moringa plants and campaign for as many people as possible in the REGION to know the importance of moringa oliefera products and how to plant, process and make sure it gets into market.

Second year

To make sure all the ASAL(Arid and Semi-Arid Lands)in the country where there is conducive climate for this tree is grown and at the same time campaign for its use nationally and internationally and at the same time find market for those farmers who will be growing the plant.

Third year

Find investors to build factories in the parts the tree will be grown in plenty so that it can be processed for export because everybody in the whole world will be aware of its nutritional and medicinal importance.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

1. Misconception of the tree by those who against herbs. This has got nothing to do with those herbs, its merely food!

2. Ignorance that can lead to lack of man power. The youth prefer going to the big towns to find big jobs that not there.

3. Lack of funds to manage the whole process. i.e transportation, communication, drying equipments and houses, etc.

How many people will your project serve annually?

> 10.000

What is the average monthly household income in your target community, in US Dollars?

$100 ‐ 1000

Does your project seek to have an impact on public policy?

These partnerships together with other partnerships that may join us in days to come are very important in this campaign because they famous, have potential credibility and when associated with them people will trust our message. They can also support us financially and make the whole thing a success.

These partnerships can also help to do research on this plant and find either better ways to use it or side effects of it. For the time being radio mang’elete is transmitting our programmes free of charge, but they will not do it for long, and at the same time we need to transmit in other Radio Stations.

Lastly and most important, will make SOLACE CBO reach many patients of different illnesses and do research on different ways of using this tree.

A História

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Am a journalist and radio programme producer in mang’elete f.m station. I have been producing and presenting health, environment and HIV and AIDS programmes. It was on my normal process of collecting programme materials when I met this lady, Honorable Agnes Ndetei. She was once the area member of parliament in late 1980s, but people had almost forgotten her, because there were roamers that after she was beaten out of the seat she went abroad but fortunately I came to know that she was just within and was doing a project of conserving the environment.

I had booked an appointment to meet her so that she can give a message on environment conservation. When I reached her homestead, she was preparing moringa powder with the help of other two ladies but I did not know at once what they where doing because when she saw us, she ran to welcome and volunteered to push my wheelchair to her seed nursery so that we can safe time.

She had more than 6000 seedlings and to my astonishment the moringa seedlings were about three-quarter of the 6000. When I asked her why, it’s when she told me that when she was beaten out of politics she was sick, and then she went to seek medication abroad. After testing she was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through chemotherapy and radiation, but she did not trust it, so she decided to seek help from herbalists.

The first one whom she approached had no solution but knew about moringa oliefera but he never knew whether it can be found in our country Kenya, but in Nigeria. To her disappointment she had no money to travel to Nigeria, so she called her friend who was a lecturer in one of universities in Kenya and asked him whether he knew about this tree called moringa oliefera. In fact she could believe the explanation of her friend who was telling her that the tree she was asking was just in their parent’s shamba but she never new.

After a length interview on what she is doing and planning to do in future with this moringa, I was very marveled and decided to join her and make this tree known, used and planted by the community for their own consumption and as a cash crop.

I did not react right a way, I wanted to test it first. I had two pressure soles that had disturbed for three good years, so I asked her to give me one packet of the processed moringa powder. Believe it or not, I applied it to my soles and within two weeks they were gone!

After one month I visited her again to open the whole idea to her. It was not easy to convince her to accept my idea of publicizing the importance of this tree, but after a long discussion she agreed to come live in our radio station for about one hour so that we get know what people will respond.

After that live program things changed drastically, many people started coming out with different illnesses to try this moringa powder and the out come was very promising. This made SOLACE CBO which by then was known as SOLACE SELF HELP GROUP and which was planting and processing moringa powder very famous.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

My motivating story is about Mary Nduku who was HIV positive and she tested when she was seriously weak. She was about 24kilogrammes but could not be tested CD4 count because she was very weak. Then after taking moringa for one month her weight went upto 36kilogrammes then she was tested CD4 count which was 100. She was in the first group of patients SOLACE CBO chose to give moringa in the RECOVERY PROGRAM test its ability.

As for now this lady has taken moringa powder for one year and her CD4 count Is 500 and her weight risen up to 70kilogrammes. Now she is a volunteer in SOLACE SELF CBO as a trainer on how to plant, process and use moringa, to empower the community.

I have already prepared and presented two radio programmes on her testimony on how moringa powder has helped her and how it should be taken with everyday meals.

The funniest thing about this story this tree has been in this area since 1899. It was brought here by the Indians who were building Mombasa – Kampala railway line. These Indians succeeded in building this line when the Europeans were being killed by malaria, because the Indians were eating Moringa Oliefera. That is why I decided to use the radio to make it known. The radio is very powerful in this area and up to now we have made a very promising step

What makes your idea unique?

Football For Life is unique in several ways. In this competition, we are unique in being the only submission from China, the world’s biggest football nation. Our commitment to community values and the principles of fair play still make us unique in this market today.

FFL is the first time that a registered charity and a community football club have come together in China to provide disadvantaged children with the same high quality experiences enjoyed by more affluent urban kids.

FFL is the first time that ClubFootball’s 90,000+ members and fans (and many more supporters) have had the opportunity to channel charitable contributions directly into football and witness the impact on deserving children in their own communities.

FFL is unique in matching CAI’s network of migrant schools with ClubFootball’s spare coaching capacity. This matching of resources enables us to jointly deliver football courses free to all FFL participants and to start integrating migrant kids groups with the more than 2,000 city registered kids currently playing football at our courses held at nearly 20 locations across Beijing.

At the heart of FFL is the desire to provide positive learning experiences, not just for city and migrant kids, but also for ClubFootball’s international coaches, local staff and volunteers. These innovations make FFL sustainable and scalable directly in line with the growth of football in major cities.

What impact have you had?

FFL kicked off in the first semester of the 2009/10 academic year (autumn/winter) with pilot programs running in Dongba Experimental School. The pilot involved approx. 150 boys and girls.

In Spring 2010, Football For Life expanded to reach a total of 242 kids. Substantial media support has been secured and key sponsors & partners are committed for future seasons.

Feedback

At the outset, being unfamiliar with the game of football, many had expected not to enjoy the activity but were unanimously converted come the end of the course! Aside from bringing happiness to the children, they were particularly grateful for the exercise and the opportunity to play outdoors having previously stayed inside for PE classes.

The activity helped boost confidence, self-esteem and energy levels, as well as giving kids the chance to interact more and form stronger, more compassionate relationships with their peers.

In addition, many of the children also mentioned that taking part in the programs had prompted a love of the game that they could use in their family life and intended to watch televised games with their fathers in future.

FFL also helped break down gender-based barriers amongst girls who previously believed that football was a sport for boys only and who now look forward to playing with a newfound sense of confidence in their abilities.

Problema

There are currently 150-200 million migrant laborers who have moved from the countryside into major cities in China. They must either uproot or leave behind their children. In certain regions, 50% of children have parents working in other provinces.

Migrant children are especially vulnerable to low self-esteem and delinquency. They are also the most at risk from human trafficking. Studies show that a large percentage perform poorly in school, are disenfranchised, and develop behavioral issues due to limited social support, poor economic conditions, lack of familial support and low motivation levels.

Migrant children mostly live outside city centers and frequently move with their parents. They lack stability and suffer from limited access to education and government services. Against this backdrop, recent studies show that youth crime in China is escalating dramatically and gangs are attracting children by providing comfort, structure & a sense of purpose.

Actions

With the project now successfully launched in Beijing, our efforts in 2010 are focused on further evaluating the impact, consolidating our current operations (including dealing with the issue of the fluctuating numbers of students at migrant schools) and, subject to funding, extending Football For Life into more migrant schools to reach more deserving kids.

For that we require support from multiple sources and we are working closely with local government, private companies, non-profit organizations and other community groups to secure in-kind and cash donations and sponsorships. We are also actively seeking grants from charitable foundations.

Our aim is to build Football For Life into the primary vehicle for uniting the incredible power of football at all levels in China and directing those combined efforts directly into delivering practical solutions on the ground in the most deserving communities.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

2010 – The successful pilot project provides the practical proof of impact required by many major funding bodies. Our primary objective is to ensure the sustainability of the current FFL project in Beijing by establishing minimum annual commitments from our current supporters and by reaching out for further CSR and public affairs contributions from China-based businesses. We need to further improve the donation process to facilitate smaller, individual contributions and we will further develop corporate schemes that better match client budgets and deliver tangible CSR benefits.

2011 – ClubFootball is in the process of securing private backing for the construction of the first dedicated community football center in China. As our flagship charitable project, FFL will be at the core of the fund-raising activities facilitated by the new venue. In addition to providing further high quality capacity for free coaching sessions, the center will also allow us to host special FFL Football Festivals for all participating migrant children and better integrate our migrant kids groups with their city-registered neighbors.

2012 – ClubFootball is exploring options for the extension of its business into further Chinese cities. We commenced commercial community coaching programs at international schools in the city of Tianjin in 2009 and initial FFL fundraising activities started there this year. As these activities and the associated ‘football-friendly’ network grows, we will establish a permanent presence in the city and FFL Tianjin will be our central community commitment.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

With ClubFootball’s coaching capabilities and CAI’s migrant schools network both in place, the major barrier remains the lack of knowledge about this type of community responsibility among local people and the position of many companies which have funds to allocate for similar projects but have yet to recognize Football For Life as a positive force for good within China.

In China, government ownership of sport, restrictions on the activities of charities and NGOs and the failure of the education system to properly value sport in school, all conspire to make it harder to build community sports networks. As indicated by the lack of entries from China for this competition and China's absence from the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals, football here remains isolated from the world at all levels.

As an organization, ClubFootball is dedicated to building the sustainable infrastructure needed for grassroots football to flourish in China and, with FFL, we are further stating that, as grassroots football finally gets going within major cities, the amateur principles of community support must be proudly proclaimed and delivered from Day One. Given China's population, this is the biggest challenge in the world and we will succeed only if more people and organizations come to share this understanding and actively contribute to ensuring that society's most vulnerable members can enjoy and share the same uplifting sports experiences as the most secure.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Chinese Football Association – ClubFootball supports the “Schools Football” program in 44 cities nationwide.

Beijing Olympic City Development Association – ClubFootball is partner to the Olympic legacy organization. We work with Beijing Education Commission, British Council and Premier League to deliver coach training courses.

Nike is a ClubFootball partner and donates footwear and balls for FFL courses.

Digitouch Foto supports FFL with in-kind services, including team photos for all participants.

Leung’s Studio volunteered their skills to help ClubFootball and CAI create the FFL logo.

Grassroots sports and charitable giving both suffer from lack of media exposure and we have cultivated relations with media organizations that share our commitment. Media partners distributing FFL information (press releases, news and features) are:

PR Newswire Asia, Beijing Today, Sohu Sports Broadcasting, Jin magazine, iCUBED.us, Global Times, China Newswire, China CSR

The involvement and support of the above organizations is crucial to bringiing the FFL message to the wider public.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

1. Secure more funding. We know the exact costs and resources needed to deliver each FFL course and we still have potential capacity within our current coaching teams. Unfortunately, there is an almost endless number of migrant children who have no organized sports activities and could benefit from FFL courses.

2. Official recognition. We work closely with government, business, media and communities, but we still need to gain more official recognition for our work from domestic and international football organizations and supporters.

3. English. The English language environment provided by FFL is key to attracting kids, parents and schools and we need to better integrate fun-based language learning and practice into all our courses. We are exploring opportunities to add "English Through Football" materials to the packs supplied to FFL participants.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

From its inception, ClubFootball has had a very strong community ethic and, in partnership with sponsors including MasterCard and Manchester United FC, we have raised nearly US$100,000 for charities including UNICEF, Red Cross and Huiling since 2004.

While we are proud of these achievements as an example of how social groups can join together for the common good, it became increasingly clear to us that football itself desperately needs support in China and, crucially, that football itself is the best solution for many social challenges addressed by various charities.

Once we identified that our football courses directly address many of the issues being tackled by CAI and other NGOs in migrant worker communities, it was an easy extension for us to move forward together to create a single project that combined those shared objectives and benefits.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

ClubFootball was established by a group of British social entrepreneurs based in China and FFL is just one of the positive results of over 10 years of efforts to instill community sports ethics here.

Chairman Rowan Simons is one of the most respected experts in China’s media industry and a prominent spokesman for the grassroots game. His story of building football in China was told in the book “Bamboo Goalposts” which was shortlisted for the 2008 William Hill Sports Book of the Year.

CEO Keith Bradbury has led our charitable projects since the launch of ClubFootball and he created and now drives forward the FFL project with CAI.

COO David Niven is responsible for building ClubFootball’s junior coaching and league programs and coordinates the schedules of our FFL coaching teams.

ANGELS OF CHANGE: A Positive Deviant/Hearth Approach to Maternal Health

Country your work focuses on

Tanzânia

Descreva Sua Ideia

INTRODUCTION
In this world, every minute one woman dies of pregnancy or birth related complications. WHO defines maternal death as: death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of pregnancy from cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes. Perinatal death means death of a fetus from 28 weeks of gestation to seven complete days of life including stillbirths. The perinatal mortality; is a sensitive indicator of health status of women, the health of the newborn and quality of health care provided during perinatal period especially delivery and immediate postnatal period. According to TDHS 2004/5,there is high antenatal care coverage- 94% at least one visit; 62% makes four or more visits yet the maternal mortality ratio is still high- 578/100,000 live births and under 5 mortality rate = 112/1000 live births.
Tanzania is amongst countries with very high number of maternal deaths in the world, the high maternal and newborn mortality constitute a silent emergency in Africa, (WHO, 2004) .Two decades after safe motherhood initiative (SMI); the maternal and perinatal mortality levels have sadly continued to rise instead of declining. Health indicators are not improving which may be attributed by poor quality of health services provided (reproductive and child health survey, 1999; TDHS, 2004/5).Poverty, social exclusion, low levels of education and women violence/abuse are amongst the contributing factors.
ANGELS OF CHANGE
Angels of Change is an entry point to prevent maternal deaths using the Positive Deviant/Hearth Approach. Angels of Change is an Idea of intensive behavior change Intervention targeting Mothers of Childbearing age and Pregnant mothers who at risk of maternal complications. It is derived from the fact that despite of all of the above factors contributing to the high Maternal mortality in Tanzania, one thing is evident, that there are a number of women who has never experienced Pre, intra and post delivery complications within our communities under the same resources, these mothers has been able to explore the environment and make use of the available resources while others are not able to do that, these are the one I call the Positive Deviants or The Angels of Change. Through identifying these Positive Deviant Mothers and Using the Community Based Hearth Session Approach, women of Childbearing age and Pregnant women can be brought together to share the Positive Deviant behaviors practiced by Positive Deviant Mothers. Different issues involving locally-discovered positive deviant practices as well as promote other practices essential to healthy living. Hearth sessions incorporate a number of approaches for behavior change including identification of Angels of change in a community, peer to peer support, Mother Dialogues, counseling, negotiation, Adult learning principles, skills building, motivation through visible practices and Women mobilization. Family planning, prevention of unwanted and high risk pregnancies, ensure skilled care during childbirth; ensure access to quality emergency care when a complication arises are among the topics during Hearth sessions.
It involves learning what these Role Models (Angels of Change) has been doing to promote their socially and communally acceptable behaviors and practices promoting good maternal health, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Health care utilization and promoting these practices to be adopted by other mothers. The Hearth part of Angels of Change idea using a PD approach is an intensive behavior change Intervention targeting mothers at risk of maternal Complications.
Sites of implementation including selection of places where majority of Youths are found/lives/work in relatively close proximity, where there are a significant number of risk behaviors.
Angels of Change will be identified though Initial dialogue with respective mother’s groups in a particular community/Institution through peer voting systems especially during antenatal visits. The respective group, guided by Community health workers will anonymously select an Angels of Change with positive deviant behaviors and practices communally acceptable which promotes good maternal health using a special tool. Our Health Volunteer(s) together with the selected Angels of Change will facilitate a mothers Conversation process to discover behaviors and Practices depicted by a selected Role Model and the Group will set up Action Plan. The selected Role Model will trained on facilitation skills and be responsible to conduct Hearth Sessions with Material support provided. She will also be Our contact person in a Particular group observing how peers are adopting her/his practice and behaviors and recommending the way forward. The project will facilitate group meeting at least twice a month and Group learning visits to other successful group with the same socio-economical circumstances. Each group will have a chairperson, Secretary, one Angel of Change and one guardian, teachers/ a community member identified by the group will serve as Guardians. Our Health volunteers will be conducting regular supportive visits to respective group(s) and Provide Monthly report.

What makes your idea unique?

The Positive Deviance (PD) process identifies acceptable, effective and sustainable practices that are already used by at-risk mothers and that do not conflict with local culture. Through learning what their peers with equally limited resources and risk situations are doing to promote maternal Health, Mothers are then empowered through Hearth Sessions to adopt better practices and behaviors even in areas with very limited access to health information and services. It is, in essence, it is a “mop-up” program to eliminate the pool of maternal Complications among women of Childbearing age and Pregnant women , not only through Health Promotion but also by permanent behavior changes which are acceptable by the community and can be carried on to next generation of women.
PD Approach1 has been in Practice for nutrition rehabilitation programs in Vietnam and Rwanda resulting to marked reductions in child malnutrition and improvements in child health within a short period of Time .ITS USE FOR MATERNAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES HAS NEVER BEEN DOCUMENTED ANYWHERE,Making it unique. The angels of Change Project will be linked to other health interventions for all women within the target communities if any.
Its is a Programme which is self centered and Communally driven buiding the Capacity of women especially in resource limited areas to be responsible for their health by taking appropriate actions at the right time through guidance of their Positive Deviant Peers leading to improved maternal Health.

Mariam(Not her Actual Name) an old lady with Seven children with the Last Born,Nameless dying in early days of her life.Mariam suffered a severe hemmorrhage afterwards, the cause being retained placenta which was very very difficulty to remove. She was brought to the hospital, exahusted and tired, paper white appearance and it was a weekend and a Doctor on Duty was not available in the ward.Luckly enough i was there visiting my wife who has just delivered a baby girl Eileen. After observing that the Doctor on duty was not there then i thought i've to do something to save Mariam's life.I told the nurse,'i'm a Doctor and i think i can help'.At first she didn't agree with me ,she needed to see my ID Card.Unfortunately i didn't have one.I was just Completed internship in Dar Es Salaam and moved to Shinyanga to wait for posting.Unwelcomed by the nurses i just grabed the sterlile gloves and gown from the Nurses hands and rushed to the Bed where Mariam was gasping, after a series of emergency Procedures Mariam became stable, back to life again.....at that point the nurses realized that i was really a medical Doctor.Nearby Mariam there was a Woman Called Fatuma(Not her real name),she knew Mariam of course and they were neighbours to our suprise. She was just delivered a Seventh baby without any Maternal Complications. After talking to her for some time i discovered that she was poor even more than Mariam, then i kept asking myself 'Why people having the same resources, others make good use of them while others are not???.I asked the same question to Fatuma ....to my suprise the practises she explained are those what i currently call Positive Deviant Behaviors. After some time i attended a Positive Deviant/Hearth Training and started offering technical support to one of our Programme area which was implementing the Nutrition Project among Underfives using the PD/Hearth approaches...very successifully. Then i thought the very same idea can pbe used in Maternal health issues ...of course as ANGELS OF CHANGE PROJECT.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Majority of Programmes aiming at Good Materal Health are always Generalised and institutioanl approaches. However programmes aiming at Buiding Capacities of women to become the Angels of changes for their lives by observing and learning from peers who have the very same resources but having Positive deviant Practices are very few if Any.Angels of Change Projects is a Socially, acceptible and centered Projects which uses socially driven practices which are Positive to build capacity of expectant mothers in Materal Health issues.

Man-making education is a rare and non-existing idea, after Swami Vivekananda's intense teachings around the world. Men and women around the world are grabing information and degrees and do their work for their bread alone. Nobody is interested to teach the poor and the ignorant about the real knowledge to empower himself or herself not only for bread-winning, but an extra-miles going education that can protect him or her from all miseries from outside and also from his or her own inside. This strengtehing of internal man is the most important thing that is required for todays world.

big sports festivals like Olympics, World Cup Foot Ball, Wimbledon Tennis or World Cup Cricket, the numbers of viewers are immensely viewing.

Who will help you develop your idea? Why are you the one to make this happen?

I happened to view so much of television news and sports channels. By establishing an environment for social good to occur via television & balance thru mobile phones today, our impact will only increase over time.

How much will it cost to launch your idea? (This can be an estimate)

It will cost around $ 1000 per state in India(29 states). Based on the media we advertise this message it will come down or up. Campaigns are only attracted to limited coverage. But door to door campaign only thru TV/Mobile

What makes your idea unique?

So far in Nigeria, although some researches have assessed the levels and content of different premixes for the fortification of food items, just a few has looked at the interactions that may exist between these combinations of vitamins and minerals.

However, as a nutraceutical specialist who manufacture these blends for the food industries, it was not be out of place to see the interactions that exist and look for ways to ameliorate this so that the essence of fortification will not be lost.

It is in the view of this that the project will want to explore
1. The various combinations of vitamins and minerals that can exist
2. The interactions that may be evident
3. The ways in which these interactions can be helped to encourage fortification in the right manner

The village laborers are involving their most of their time in fighting with each other, communal clashes, sex addiction, drug addiction, used by Political meeting(by giving some amount and one day meals). They are practiced to avail all the benefits on FREE. Hence, they are not ready to do hard work and wanted to earn much profit on a short period. Due to this they are using unwanted chemical manures to spoil the health of humans. The practice of wasting the time by seeing the TV serials, chat with another, etc. will be reduced. They practice to get some self awareness while doing any work on group. Sharing their views on various matters will lead to healthy environment.

What impact have you had?

Every person should allot some space or at least plant in mud pots will give strenth to the family members. They can get the fresh vegetables or greens from their kitchen garden itself. Or they can use their neighbour houses for this purpose. In which, the relationship will be developed. The waste water, vegetable wastes are putting as manures for the small plants. Communual violence, idleness, etc. will be reduced. By this formation of Kitchen garden Group, the real economically backward people will benefitted. Helping, compassion, Our future generation (our children) should know the real culture and helping tendency, compassion on fellow humans and the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Problema

The strength is fresh vegetables. The weakness is regular quantity will not get from kitchen garden(for such option, we can use the fresh veg market). Threat will be coming from big farmers or villagers. Opportunity will be increasing as well as the health of the family members will develop. I am expecting a bright future generation if we use this Kitchen Garden Group.

Actions

The kitchen garden techniq to be adopted as hobby. Physical work may increase health and the concentration on work will give them mental health. This work to be undertaken at least everyday 30 mimutes. In which, the family will get weekly 3 to 4 days or even everyday vegetables.

Results

Self Help Group may be arranged and around 10 to 15 ladies will assemble in a house, where sufficient place is available for planting such kitchen garden veg & greens. The income and expenses may be shared among them. This unity will give them psychological strenth.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

The idel time will be reduced and the practice of FREE to be vanished from the minds of the housewives and idle gents. Regular plantation and understanding will be developed among one another without seeing any caste, creed and colour.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

I believe the most of the village labours are practiced idleness, hence they sit and drink tea shops and arrack(tasmark) shops. Hence, the crimes are increasing. They might be the prevented this and this can be tackled by their wife's and family members. Even drunkards are reducing.

How does your innovation currently get kids (or how might it get kids) engaged in physical activity? How would your idea or project potentially be implemented during the school day?

In Bible, Jesus said, “You are the temple of God”. Hence, it is our duty to preserve and maintain our body and soul as pure health as He likes. Even diseases like diabetes will be eradicated in physical activities. We can prevent childhood obesity by physical exercises to maximum extent with proper expert’s(coach) advice.

Nowadays the basic structure of Education is based on the Studies only. They never give importance to physical activities in general. The obesity is developed mainly because of the parents. They play a vital role to grow an obesity child. Most of the obesity comes as hereditary. Few parents want their children to eat more and have good figure. Only in few schools, they teach extra curricular activities with studies.

How does your innovation currently get kids (or how might it get kids) engaged in physical activity? How would your idea or project potentially be implemented during the school day?

My innovation is to create and implement a new health and fitness program for use in primary schools throughout the world. This innovation uses a new model of behavior change to develop lifetime fitness habits. The model may be described as follows: thoughts combined with good character--lead to positive behaviors which if maintained--lead to habits--lead to destiny. Existing fitness programs for kids fail to use this model with the result that they do not engage in healthy exercise as a lifetime behavior. The program is designed to be used in schools by integrting it into existing curricula subjects.

What makes your idea unique?

My idea is so unique that 99% of the doctors in the world are not aware of it. My unique model is grounded in the discoveries of Quantum Physics made more than a hundred years ago. The seeds of my innovation were planted by Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, and the other pioneers of quantum physics, who realized that the accepted ways of viewing the world and the dis-eases were false. Mental health is more important for changing our suffering to wellbeing, as we all know that mind is over matter.

Every thought we think, whether knowingly or unknowingly, produces chemicals in our brain and body. These chemicals are responsible for destroying or supporting the function and life in various cells of our body, and thereby cause illness or wellness respectively. Negative thoughts leading to fear, anxiety, guilt, anger, etc. produce stress hormones, mainly Cortisol, which harm our mind and body. Similarly, positive thoughts leading to faith, forgiveness, love, joy, etc. produce healing hormones, such as Dopamine, Serotonin, Melatonin, Endorphin, etc., which heal our mind and body.

Thoughts appear to be automatic, but in fact they are learned from some past experiences. Whenever we undergo an emotionally stressful or painful experience in our life, then there is a possibility for our thinking or thought pattern to become negative in some aspects. This continuous negative thought pattern in turn, creates health problem or dis-ease in our mind as well as body. This health problem can develop either within a short time or over a period of time. The unique drug-free treatment, which I have developed, can cure virtually all mental illnesses as well as physical illnesses. Moreover, we can preclude the long-term adverse effects of medication.

What impact have you had?

In my more than a decade of practice, I have been instrumental in treating and healing thousands of patients with various health problems across the world; through face-to-face treatment, on-phone treatment, on-line treatment, as well as group treatment. The range of patients I treat are people suffering from various mental health problems like anxiety, phobia, over-stress, depression, schizophrenia, other early psychosis, and so forth; to various physical health problems such as asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, migraine, skin problems, back problems, and many more bodily dis-eases.
Like most doctors, I firmly believe that the healing is done by the Almighty God; however, I have the right knowledge, techniques and process. The innovation of my unique model of drug-free treatment has already made a measurable impact on the society. Seeing my success, quite a few doctors and psychologists are also trying to replicate my innovation.
My patients are from different walks of life, wide age group, and from varied places and countries. My patients include corporate executives, doctors, house wives, students, businessmen, industrialists, and personalities from sports, films and politics.
As per the feedback from my patients, it is evident that my drug-free treatment gives more than 90% results. Moreover, while going through the journey from illness to wellness, there is a definite transformation in patients' outlook towards self and life.
I have been - honored with host of awards, interviewed on TV channels, and covered by almost all major newspapers and magazines. I have also written quite a few books on health, happiness and life. In addition to the aforesaid, I write for various publications from time to time. Moreoever, I have helped and motivated numerous people, through my talks, lectures, seminars, workshops, articles and books; and have received fantastic feedback, praises and blessings from them.

Problema

Although the vast majority of patients are treated with drugs, such medications do not cure the true cause of the disorder, whether it is mental or physical. These drugs cannot think for you, they cannot change your way of thinking. When these drugs are taken away, the disorders or the health problems appear again. Drugs are useful for short-term and immediate control of symptoms. However, long-term use of drugs not only give rise to several serious side effects, but also reduces the body’s potential to heal and recover by itself. Knowing the limits of drug treatment, we must look out for a better alternative; not only to get treated, but also to get cured of any health problem. Hence, the primary problems my project is addressing are: 1) Cure, not just control of symptoms, and 2) Precluding serious side-effects in the long-run.

Actions

We are doing all that is possible from our side (within limitations) to create awareness regarding my drug-free treatment process. Apart from doing individual or one-to-one treatment, I am also doing group treatment in the form of workshops. Besides treatment (individual and group), I also give free awareness talk at various places as and when possible. In addition to aforesaid, I write books and articles to spread the message and to provide knowledge for self-help. Thus it can be seen that there are 3 major actions being taken: 1) Giving treatment, 2) Conducting seminars, and 3) Writing books.

Results

Results expected from these actions are as follows: 1) First of all, awareness will be created that most dis-eases can be cured and hence, one need not worry about the dis-ease or dependency on drugs (medication). 2) Secondly, many patients will actually start getting cured and healed with my drug-free treatment. 3) Because of the cure, those people will become free from the dependency on drugs. 4) Finally due to all these they can be free from the serious side-effects of drugs.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

For my project to be successful over the next three years, from 2010 to 2012, the following things will be needed to be done: 1) Many free awareness seminars should be arranged in most major cities. 2) At the beginning of the ensuing year, I must start writing a comprehensive book on my drug-free treatment and get it widely circulated. 3) Later, group-treatment workshops should be conducted. If everything goes well, which I am positive can happen, then the plan is like: 2010 - Main focus will be in India, 2011 - Main focus can be in the United States of America, and 2012 - Main focus can shift even to Europe. Most important - this great project will require big money (funds).

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The only hurdle I see that can prevent my project from being a success is lack of big funds. Literally lots of money will be required to be pumped in for this project to move smoothly and successfully. The project will involve lots of advertising (of various kinds), traveling, staying and organizing of my team. There will be lot of printing and distribution cost, and so forth. To make this mission successful in a grand scale, we need more than 1 million dollars, to start with.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Right from my childhood (from the age of 7), I developed severe bronchial asthma. Little after marriage, I developed migraine, and then cervical spondylosis. Much later I also developed cardiac neurosis and high blood pressure. On and off, I always had problems of hyperacidity and constipation. All along I always felt that medication is not the answer to health or cure of any illness; otherwise I should have been cured from all these health problems by now. While I was doing my advance study in human psychology and psychotherapy, I also studied about psychosomatic disorders (mind causing an illness in body). That is the time I realized the big connection between our mind and body, and hence started deep research into it, which ultimately led to this innovation in the form of my drug-free treatment. I did my doctorate in drug-free treatment, and started my private practice. As my practice flourished, I started getting plethora of awards and recognition. For me, however, my best achievement, at that time, was my own cure of asthma after 30 years. All my other health problems were also cured. With the help of God, I could cure myself with my drug-free treatment procedure. I started participating in various sports and won umpteen tournaments. My lungs, which were supposedly weak, became my strength. Today, I am known for my stamina and strength when it comes to sports. Besides becoming fit and strong, I as well worked on my mind to make it very positive and peaceful. I do everything, which were prohibited to me from my childhood. I have ice-cold water and ice creams, go to snow-laden hills stations, and most importantly stopped all my medicines. In today's date, I am known for my health, youth and joy!

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Many researchers have done great job in the treatment of psychosomatic disorders (mind causing ilnesses in body) over the last century. However, the names mentioned below are the pioneers whose works had inspired my research and development stupendously. Leslie M. LeCron (1892 - 1972), was a psychologist who made an immense research to tell us how illnesses develop and explained what causes them. Moreover, he also brought to light the various methods of communicating directly with our inner mind to find the causative factors of diseases.According to him, in order to improve our illness it is of utmost importance to find out the source of the illness. We must consider the possibility of emotions in producing the illness. He firmly believes that a direct path to the inner mind, with insight into origins and causes of all illnesses, is the only real key to overcoming illnesses and to changing patterns of thinking.
He had emphatically said, “Too often a physician will treat only the symptom and not the cause. Drugs rarely will remove the causes which are buried deep within the inner mind.” Dr. J. A. Winter, M.D., was a Man-hattan psychosomaticist; who not only explained why we get, stay and repeat our illnesses, but also explained how to overcome our illnesses. He gave a six-point definition of a psychosomatic disease. However, to make it simpler, let us understand the three most important points: 1) The disorder gives troublesome symptoms without any organ damage, although damage to the organ may occur later. 2) It is based on some past experience, usually painful. 3) It is based on fixed association - similar experiences will almost always trigger the symptoms of the disorder. He had clearly said, "These illnesses seem to arise from problem-situations and from words, rather than from actual injuries or infection." He further said, "Using the approach of psychotherapy (psychological treatment) will be helpful in these conditions. Certainly the conventional medical and surgical forms of treatment leave much to be desired, as any doctor will admit."
