Recreação

One member of the Changemakers community, Awista Ayub, is using recreation as a way to change societal perceptions of acceptable roles for women in Afghanistan.

From the mid-1990s, the Taliban had limited recreation opportunities for most Afghan children. When the Taliban fell in 2004, Ayub brought eight Afghan girls to the United States for a soccer clinic, opening one of the first doors for girls to play sports.

“Sports as an instrument for empowering women and girls in developing countries has engendered increased interest and support within the international development community in recent years,” says Ayub.

This bed contains cone-shaped rollers that move along the length of the bed alleviating areas of pressure where the patient’s body comes into contact with the mattress. The massage action also stimulates localized blood flow. This dual action of the rollers will prevent the development of pressure ulcers in patients.

What makes your idea unique?

The Nichol-Brink bed allows for a dual action. This means that not only will the patient be moved to several positions during the cycles of movement there will continuous stimulation of blood flow and lymph fluid to patient’s heart. This is the only bed for bedsores with this dual action, and it is this novel idea that is the answer to bedsores.

Incidence (annual) of Bedsores: An estimated 77 571 people in South Africa are affected by bedsores every year. About 474 692 new cases of bedridden ulcer occurred in the US 2000-2002, that accounts for approximately 1 in 573 people in USA (Patient Safety in American Hospitals, Health Grades 2004).

Deaths from Bedsores: 34,320 deaths from decubitus ulcers were attributable to the patient safety incident in the US 2000-2002 (Patient Safety in American Hospitals, Health Grades 2004) Death rate extrapolations for USA for Bedsores: 34,319 per year, 2,859 per month, 659 per week, 94 per day, and 3 per hour.

Cost statistics for Bedsores: The following are statistics from various sources about costs and Bedsores: $2,574.02 million in excess cost of treating decubitus ulcer was attributable to a patient safety incident in the US 2000-2002. $2.57 million is spent on preventable decubitis ulcer annually in America 2000-02 (Patient Safety in American Hospitals, Health Grades 2004)

Problema

The development is still at a prototype phase and a lot of development and research needs to be done. It is close to imposable to get sensible funding or partners in South Africa at such a early stage of development.

Actions

We have already patent the concept and is about to build an advance prototype so that all the necessary clinical test could be run. We have also built a connection with an international medical distributor who is very keen to distribute and maintain the beds.

What impact have you had?

Thus far the Dream Center has raised awareness and some funding for the completion of the project. As far as impact, we are sure of the benefits visual imagery and creative expression had on Ronda, a developmentally disabled individual for whom the Dream Center is named.

Problema

At present, there is not a high-tech visual outlet for the developmentally disabled community or the residents at Fairview Developmental Center. The Dream Center wishes to change that!

Actions

We are currently fundraising and establishing awareness for the Dream Center. We have partners with like-minded organizations, business and individuals who provide support to the developmentally disabled community.

Results

Our goal is to accomplish the mission of Ronda’s Dream Center, which is to enrich and improve the quality of life of the developmentally disabled community through a creative visual therapy center. Our main objectives are to improve mental health through art and recreational therapy, provide an effective new tool for the Fairview staff, foster family connections and community involvement, and to nurture creative growth. Due to the pilot nature of this project, many of our goals and objectives are not immediately measurable, though we are confident that this project will bring positive outcomes.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

Once open, in our first year we wish to service primary the residents at Fairview Developmental Center. In our second year, we hope to open to the community and invite the developmentally disabled community outside of Fairview to experience the Dream Center. Finally in our third year and moving forward we wish to have a fully functional program where residents of Fairview and community members can all enjoy and benefit from the Dream Center.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

We hope that numerous individuals would be able to benefit from the Dream Center, however, the only main issue that could hinder the Dream Center's would be the closure of Fairview Developmental Center, a state facility.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Adrianne Cohen (founder of Ronda's Dream Center) envisioned a place where individuals like her daughter Ronda could go and experience a stimulating visual environment. Ronda, a resident at Fairview Developmental Center in Costa Mesa, California, responded positively to visual movements such as trees blowing in the wind and the colors of the sunset. Like many residents at Fairview, Ronda suffered from a disability that made enjoying many visual wonders difficult and often unreachable. The staff and doctors at Fairview make every effort to expose the residents to the outside environment, however the implementation of the Dream Center will provide endless tools and resources to better the lives of the residents.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

Many individuals have contributed to the idea for Ronda's Dream Center, identifying just one person would be impossible. Ronda, who the Dream Center is named for, is the inspiration for this project.

What makes your idea unique?

I have conducted my Numberama workshops with a wide spectrum of children and adults in various educational and mental health environments for over 20 years. Recently I worked with approximately 50 gifted chldren from grades 2 through 8 in a Maine school district, where I gave weekly Numberama lessons to mathematically inclined gifted children. Some of these children had mental health problems as well, inclusive of Asperger's syndrome and ADHD behaviors. I have also conducted my Numberama program in a mental hospital for children, and in community mental health agencies. My Numberama program is based upon my philosophy of mathematics as an art form, and is a concrete representation of what I refer to as a "natural dimension of mathematics" (see my article "My Conception of Integral" published on the Integral World website at www.integralworld.net and attached below). Quite recently I gave two poster sessions at the American Psychological Association conference in Toronto, entitled "Mathematics as an Art Form" and "Artistic Psychology, Mathematical Giftedness, and Mental Disturbance in Children." My philosophy of mathematics as an art form has been with me for many years. I have had a career as a mathematics professor for over 20 years, with a Ph.D in mathematics and a number of published artilces in the pure mathematics fields of Algebraic Number Theory and Commutative Algebra, and I am currently in a Ph.D psycholog program at Saybrook University. My combination of mathematics and psychology is part of how I consider myself to be an authentic philosopher, deep at heart.

What impact have you had?

I have successfully offered my Numberama mathematics enrichment program in a wide variety of educational and therapeutic environments, ranging from Maine public school districts through national teacher education workshops through work with gifted children and gifted children conference workshops to adult education family workshops and mental health workshops. The impact of my Numberama program has been recorded through student feedback and teacher feedback, and has invariably been affirmed to significantly improve children's attitudes towards and appreciation of mathematics, their arithmetic skills and creative thinking in mathematics, and their collaborative social skills engaging in creative thinking in small groups. I have submitted a comprehensive article describing my Numberama work, with the title of "Artistic Psychology, Mathematical Giftedness, and Mental Disturbance in Children," to the American Psychological Association Diviosn 10 (Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts) journal (attached below). This article is the basis of two poster sessions I gave at the recent American Psychological Association conference in Toronto, which generated much interest in my Numberama program.

Problema

The problem I am addressing with my Numberama program is the current lack of appreciation of the beauty of creative thinking that is inherent in mathematics. We live in a highly mechanized extremely technological society, in which children are being taught to gain instantaneous knowledge in the form of information by accessing large data banks of computer input storage. Although our techological resources certainly has its effective and efficient uses, the beauty and art form inherent in mathematics is in grave danger of being lost to our future generations, and matheamtics as art form and creative discipline is precisely what my Numberama program has as its central mission to convey. The joys of creative thinking and problem solving in mathematics can be an antidote to the modern technological blight our children are currently experiencing in their mathematical education, as well as a therapeutic vehicle to enhance the creative potential and constructive social interactions of our mathematically inclined gifted children who have mental disturbances.

Actions

I have had a wide range of experience in offering my Numberama lessons and workshops to children and adults in public schools, family settings, mental health facilities, and gifted student environments. The common ingredient that runs through all these diverse Numberama contexts is the theme of mathematics as an art form. Mathematics is a creative, enjoyable, and meditative activity for me, and I have a natural way of conveying my enthusiasm for mathematics through the number theory problems and games that I have developed as part of my Numberama approach. In the case of gifted children with a mathematical inclination, this has proven to be esceptionally rewarding for the creative stimulation of thinking "out of the box" it allowed them to do. For gifted children who also have mental disturbance issues, especially Asperger's syndrome, the collaboration in small Numberama groups with other gifted children who were relatively free from mental disturbance issues has beem a rich source of beneficial therapeutic activity.

Results

I have received grants from two different organizations in Maine to conduct my Numberama program in a Maine school district for three years, and for 6 months in a mental hospital for children, from 2001 through 2004. In 2005, my non-profit corporation, Natural Dimension Learning Center, Inc. was funded directly by a Maine school diistrict for me to offer my Numberama program to a wide variety of their classes. The teacher ratings of my Numberama program were invariably escellent in terms of the children's benefits regardng attitude towards mathematics and improvement of mathematical skills and creative thinking. These benefits were prominently displayed in my 2007-2008 Numberama work with gifted children in a Maine school district through a survey that was distributed to the children who participated in the program. See my "Numberama, Mathematical Giftedness, and Mental Disturbance in Children" article below, shich also includes the results of a behavioral intervention I did for a group of gifted children with severe social interaction difficulties.

Rethinking Mental Health: Improving Comunity Wellbeing (Socio-economic Interface for violence Elimination).

A dysfunctional family breeds future poor mental health and the disturbed mind originates from some form of violence. To improve community wellbeing we must end domestic violence. But domestic violence cannot be eradicated without placing men at the forefront of protecting women from violence since men are its main perpetrators.

What makes your idea unique?

Several innovations exist in my idea.Firstly, it does not consider gender issues to be the commonly accepted concept:a women's issue. It is about men taking responsibility for their actions rather than women fighting for their rights.
Secondly,I (and my organization) hold that domestic violence is a behavior internalized in early childhood by the exposure of children to violence in a domestic context. We think that its removal in men requires psycho-social therapeutic approaches such as counselling and behavioral change methods rather than the currently predominant punitive measures alone.
Thirdly, the outcome of this approach is unitive rather than divisive for a couple.Male perpetrators of domestic violence do not return from prison angry and vengeful.Instead they get to understand their circumstances develop a true loving non-violent relationship with their spouses.
In addition men and women have found themselves closer to each other than ever before.Perhaps the most important novelty here is that many faces of domestic violence are addressed simultaneously. Hidden and less obvious forms of domestic violence, such as denial of sex and withdrawal of monetary support are confronted. It is an in-depth healing approach.
Because it is hard to attract men to join non-economic pursuits, the men end up in cooperatives, get socially integrated and are at the same time relevantly rehabilitated in their natural social environment rather than in correctional institutions that have little bearing to the sitz-in-leben in which they live.It is a new holistic methodology.

What impact have you had?

From a little known counselling program we are now overwhelmed by the public demand. We did not expect that we would receive so many clients a day; hundreds of phone calls. We did not know that our clientele would expand to cover all kinds of people with all kinds of problems: The childless couple, men living in dire poverty, the woman seeking help for her alcoholic husband, the couple that is looking for an answer to what makes them always fight, the sexually addicted husband, people who claim their homes are haunted by demons; the list is endless.when all was said is done,we encounter the everyday problems of families and communities at the very roots of community mental health.
Over the years we have from experience and study developed a workable and popular way of dealing with family issues by counselling.
Our work has gone beyond the borders of the country and continues to spread spontaneously from mouth to mouth.
More and more victims of domestic violence opt to come to us hoping to find a solution that will not force them to hand their violent husbands to the prisons. they do not want a divorce, they want a change in their spouses.
A wide section of the population is now involved: schools, faithbased groups, correctional institutions, women's organizations, human rights organizations, law enforcement and policy makers,Government and village comunities.Men are finally becoming part of the gender issues platform and taking their responsibility at all levels.

Problema

The main problem concerns is the elusive nature of domestic violence.Men return from prison sentences and continue to re-offend. Exposure of children to domestic violence creates future violent youth and adults. We wish to free society from this endless cycle of violence begetting violence. The world has not appreciated the power of peaceful non-violent forms of conflict resolution. We want to see an end to the death penalty, to ineffective punitive approaches to psychologically based problems.
In many parts of africa, the use of the cane in schools is still encouraged. where it is illegal, there are no measures to stop it completely. The effects of exposure to violence are little understood. Drug addicts, alcoholics, sex addicts, violent persons, all end up behind bars with little chances of true indepth healing. We question the current manner in which the roots of societal mental health are dealt with.Domestic violence happens in the most basic unit of society, the family, and is not different from a mini war.

Actions

We researched on why men are the main perpetrators of domestic violence. Results showed that most perpetrators had been exposed to domestic violence in their childhood. Local leaders help identify afflicted families and we offer marital counselling to both perpetrators and survivors. We rented an office, advertise in the media, get access to perpetrators in prison, get the police to identify more perpetrators and have lobbied the district Justice for counselling as a component of sentencing perpetrators. With the permission of the education office we address institutions on domestic violence.
We keep and study records of cases and counselling methods that worked or didnt work in specific cases. Our volunteers form peer pressure groups and work together in economically viable investments. Part of their profits help their victims and maintain our office and work. With a music band we march in streets and make peaceful demonstrations against brideprice during the 16 days of activism. We make referals of survivors and perpetrators to suitable programs and train men's counselors.

Results

More survivors are reporting abuse to our office and men in communities are becoming more sensitive to domestic violence. The presence of anti-violence groups of men incommunities keeps potential perpetrators in check.Women are feeling safer in the communities where we are present. We are receiving referals from all sectors of society, even by wives who fear court proceedings and dont want a divorce or loss of custody over their children.Men's cooperatives are springing up and poverty in families being alleviated. there is a clear decrease in the statistics of domestic violence.Ex-prisoners find easy to reach and attractive rehabilitation programs. We help re-integrate ex-perpetrators into new and productive lifestyles.Women's rights groups are finding it helpful to work with men.Gender issues are no longer solely a women's thing. There are now platforms for men and women to work together.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

In the first year, men's cooperatives will have to be economically viable to enable volunteers to work against domestic violenc while simultaneously sustaining their families.Part of the profits from their common income generating activities is essential for the self-sustenace of the project, our office and work.Investment funds for such common enterprises would have to come from the volunteers themselves as well as donations from goodwill and well wishers.Through awareness seminars financial appeals can be made from the communities themselves.
Such funds would be spent on social education, awareness and sensitisation on issues of domestic violence at all levels of society; seminars for schools, law enforcement, political and civil administrators,faith-based groups, cultural institutions, social organizations, legal and economic systems. The support of law enforcement, political and civil administration is vital for the change of attitudes towards and policies on domestic violence.
In the second year, with adequate funds, violent and abusive cultural, political and traditional systems would have to be challenged through social campaigns.Mens groups would have to actively support and complement womens' groups that work against domestic violence.
In the third year society would have to be involved in comprehensively rejecting all forms of exposure to violence in general(such as capial punishment and war) and domestic violence in particular. At the grass roots and national levels, legal systems that do not take the nature of male perpetrated violence into account would have to be denounced and ammended.Active change would need to occur at all levels of social and political structure.Laws would need to be enacted against any exposure of children to violence and especially domestic violence. The nature, causes and effects of domestic violence in relation to community mental health would need to be taught as a mundatory subject in schools, universities and other institutions of learning and government would have to include in her budget funding for psycho-socio economic enterprises such as counselling and recovery centers for violent people, sex and drug addicts, alcoholics, refugees and other victims of her own violence-sustaining and regenerating culture.

What would prevent your project from being a success?

The quality, number and availability of domestic violence counselors determines the quality and degree of impact on mens attitudes. We would not succeed if we failed to fund the initial training of key personel. we would also fail if we did not penetrate the higher levels of social hierarchy since these effect changes in policy and laws and can use their financial and administrative advantage against us.
We would fail if we did not have income generating activities as these are essential for sustaining the commitment and involvement of men who will normally prioritise their need to earn a living for their families.

Please tell us more about how these partnerships are critical to the success of your innovation.

Networking with NGO's are important for the effective spread and implementation of our methodologies. Our link with organizations that work against domestic violence adds a multiplier effect to our overall impact on society. We are able to share notes on types of cases, improve on our approaches and together have a stronger voice to impact on public policy. we have benefited much from skills specific trainings carried out by partner organizations. It is also important for us to maintain a referal mechanism that takes care of persons who would more suitably be taken care of by other NGO's. Collaborations that lead to wider demonstrations such as occur on the 16 days of activism are critical for our success in impacting on the public.
Because our men generally earn a living for their families we have to be linked with businesses that mutually benefit the organization and the business communities. Economically viable investments need the expertise of businesses that have been involved before us.
Partnerships with government are critical for influencing changes in public policy and amendments of unjust laws. There is need to enforce discipline where perpetrators initially resent us.

What are the three most important actions needed to grow your initiative or organization?

Firstly, we need to extensively change men's attitudes towards domestic violence and gender issues by making them responsible for protecting women against violence. This in turn requires widespread use of radio, newspaper articles and community seminars: thorough advertisement and publicity.
Secondly we must first have the men in our camp before we can do anything to them or get them to do anything for themselves. This requires attracting their interest and commitment by setting up attrative income generating projects for and with them, grouping them up in cooperative unions.

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I noticed that one mentally disturbed lady spent much of her time apparently "caring for and consoling" another mentally ill lady. The "carer" made quicker progress and soon recovered. And then I experimented with other clients and deliberately got them to attend to people with similar problems. It soon became obvious that here was something important and unrecognized. Now I know it will take former male perpetrators of domestic violence to end domestic violence in other perpetrators. As an alcoholic I was subjected to many years of abuse at the hands of those who did not really understand chemical dependency.(dismisals, expulsions, humiliations, etc). I only began to recover at the hands of recovered alcoholics at the guesthouse, a treatment center in Rochester Mn, USA.Since then I have wanted to see other troubled persons get appropriate therapy and treatment.Punishment alone will not turn the violent perpetrator into a peace activist.

Youth Statistics - Why H.E.A.L.TH for Youths is so necessary
H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will focus in and around the New York metropolitan area, with the hope to eventually branch out regionally, nationally and internationally. According to the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development's 2008 Annual Report http://www.nyc.gov/html/dycd/downloads/pdf/2008_annual_report.pdf, while 33% of the city's overall youth budget is earmarked for after school and extra-curricular activities, and great strides have been made to assist families in these areas, there is still a great deal of work left to do - and this work can be done by non-profits such as H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths. Additionally, while rates for certain health care issues are on the decline among youths, for teens 15-19, rates of pregnancy remain at 93.2 per 1,000 in New York City, as opposed to 72.2 Nationally(http://www.getthefactsny.org/policymakers/documents/NYC-NEWYORK.pdf).Rates of smoking remain high (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/csi/noid-youth.pdf). In 2005, an estimated 93,000 of the 280,000 public high school students in New York City used alcohol (http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/survey/survey-2007subsAbuse.pdf).

Actions

The workshops will be provided to underserved ages late teens-early 20s in low-income areas of New York and New Jersey. The students will participate in at least one workshop each week. There will be 10-15 students in each workshop. The program will have around 45 students the first year and over 100 students in the years after.
H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths programs benefit poor, distressed and underprivileged youth because the programs encourage the overall growth of the participants by focusing on the areas of health and life-skills. H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths programs benefit collaborating non-profits because H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will provide health and life-skills workshops currently lacking form many after-school programs, which will in turn improve the quality of the after-school programs and enhance the appeal and reputation of these programs.

Results

Through intensive workshops using innovative educational tool such as multimedia, computer gaming film, interactive discussion and field trips, students will be able to discuss healthcare and educational issues of concern and work with experienced professionals to lessen risk factors for unsafe behavior that could lead to detrimental consequences.

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Please address each year separately, if possible.

H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths will have its first annual meeting in June 2009. We will continue to work with the Columbia University Law School and hope to secure additional funding in the coming months. We have approved by-laws and various policies for the organization and have secured our 501(c)(3) status (attached).
We will need an infusion of funding, as well as support from the community, our Board (of directors and advisory) and the students themselves.

What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)

The likely impact is relationships formed, the world experienced with the hope that those who now are able to travel will encourage others to, for friendships to be formed, for mentorship’s to develop, for those without opportunity to see, the possibility to understand, for long term social ‘movement’, for sustainable development; for development through the eyes of the resident, having experienced what is outside their region because they learned through the doing. To form new ideas through the experience.

Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)

While global networking is rampant evidenced by the fact that I can Skype, tweet or text from my PC to my son sitting on the floor of a bus, on his back pack on a dirt road in Kenya, most of those sitting on the bus with him have never left their area. Where some are more educationally or economically privileged, politically savvy, and socially confident, others don’t know where their next meal is coming from or how to obtain medical treatment for their family and can only dream of what life is outside of their domain. Travel, with guidance, proper immunization, and mentorship has the possibility of encouraging those in developing nations and remote areas of developed nations to see beyond their condition. This idea is innovative because while those more fortunate have been able to go to developing nations (NGOs, Missions, Medical treatment), the ‘rescue’ is one sided. Those from the ‘inside’ should go, travel, see, learn, and rally the experience (sustainable resources, education, culture, adventure pursuits). It is a fresh look at how to help from within and develop partnerships through shared experience.

Descreva Sua Ideia

To partner, thru a recruiting program & internet ‘matching’ system, willing & experienced travelers with new ‘friends’ around the globe to travel together.  By uniting a travel host with a travel partner, providing companionship & guidance, giving the new traveler opportunity for growth through a travel experience not otherwise possible.

What would it take to launch or spread your idea? How much would it cost to make your idea a reality? (150 words max)

I have not yet researched the cost at this 'idea' stage. BYS would act as the agent, much like an on line dating service, for would-be travelers, offering a place to meet and offering travel at a significant discount for travel partners. Partners will always be an experienced traveler with a less experienced one.
The program will be advertised by travel agencies, on line travel programs, airlines, hotel chains and other travel related companies. By signing on with BYS, more experienced travelers are matched with those who desire to travel from their geographic locale and agree to meet via an internet match/banking system. Those who desire to be partnered with those more experienced travelers will do so individually directly to the website or be recommended by a variety of hosts such as universities or NGOs.
Upon a ‘match’, travel partnerships will develop. Written correspondence will be necessary and the commencement of a travel relationship.
It will be necessary to secure both corporate and government sponsorship and recruit travel agents/carriers/retailers to sponsor this newest form of global social networking……

Today, my son traveled from Tanzania into Kenya, with his friend Frank. Frank is from a village outside of Kampala, Uganda and has never traveled outside of the Kampala area.
Together, Zak and Frank traveled thru Kenya and into Tanzania and together they climbed Mt Meru. Tired but very fulfilled by their shared experience and 3 day climb, they boarded their bus bound for Kenya and their ultimate destination, Kampala, Uganda. Frank slept as Zak texted me about his travels. Together, by each others side, the journey brought shared experience, joy and has, hopefully opened the door for Frank to leave his village again and encourage others to do the same.

While my professional life includes working for a private firm in water/wastewater and empowering woman through the birth process, I am a social innovator because we encourage and empower others to live such experiences, to meet others where they are at and to appreciate travel, education and all persons, cultures and religions by hosting others in our home and extending opportunities for such encounters through travel.

What is the likely impact of your idea? (150 words max)

Earth impact: from bicycle enthusiasts to an airplane industry, from E=mc² to breakthroughs in science & technology in far less time & even less time from Burt Rutan, Richard Branson & Dr. Peter H. Diamandis to a thriving 'public' space industry & FROM ACROSS TIME, Leonardo's drawings flew into teamLEOnardo's hands, to inspire travel starved minds & bodies exhausted by imposing immigration rules, to ignite human awareness of our ability to reverse climate change. With help from our hp-friends, Greg @ http://www.pedaltheocean.com/ & Marcelo @ http://xof1.com/ LEO educates through imagination by turning history's wrongs into rights, by saying 'YES WE CAN' to a human-solar powered future. As “Earthlings”, we need to take transportation into our hands; as adults, we need to leave a legacy of following through with childhood inspirations/innovations &/or life-dreams! LEO, impacting HEARTS, MINDS & BODIES beyond age, gender &/or past failures in another’s hand is our…DREAM IMPACT!

Why is promoting global travel and engagement important? What makes your idea innovative? (200 words max)

Global (or further than yesterday) travel is the cornerstone upon which all nations (dreams) were built. Through thick & thin, engagement was the tool through which Intellectual Property could be shared, benefiting everyone involved. Centuries of innovation with Chinese hovering toys have circumnavigated Earth, inspiring American dreamers (Canadian, USian, Mexican), giving flight to countless conversations & innovations in aeronautical design. Naturally, our mission/our flight plan, is… the freedom to hover & roam… LEO is our seed of innovation on the wing! Next, we plant/partner LEO with eco- & geo-tourism & development projects to encourage global tourism; to offer a new & very important perspective of the land where “the people live” & to personally engage humanity with the most natural & pleasing resource available, to flying creatures; the beauty & fragility of our planet, from above! It’s teamLEOnardo’s dream that it’s important to you, that LEO’s… DREAM AWAKENS!

LEO: an airborne cycle for personal, sport & public transportation. As bicyclings Wright Brothers are Changemakers of a generation, LEO is a record-setting, environmental, hovering inspiration born of da Vinci's sketches/memory & handed to us to enter Igor I. Sikorsky's competition: http://vtol.org/awards/hph.htmlLearning from all who have tried/died trying: http://www.humanpoweredhelicopters.org/sikorskyprize/index.htm pledge to innovation. Wonderful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caHCbuh_Yyc Thanks Prof Naito!

What would it take to launch or spread your idea? How much would it cost to make your idea a reality? (150 words max)

Reality? HISTORIC EVENT! LEO prepares to win Sikorsky's Competition. The human & solar powered (public) transportation dream is realized as the healthy choice for billions. A change in human being/mobility requires new immigration laws. Earth from above, in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2nd article, PedalLEOtour2010: raising the ‘travel bar’ to hovering above GREEN, helps to sustain a human powered (helicopter) industry. Global relations change. After dreaming up a ‘far-fetched-flying idea’ my Wright Brothers must have wondered if bicycles would be ‘sustained’ by 'twittering, innovating or recycling' their inventions. SO, sustaining LEO is in the hands of the hungry! The REALITY is the cost of life! With an ability to willingly cross borders, LEO announces the beginning of the END of POVERTY. Later, we upgrade LEO with a solar-electric engine giving older people a new way to explore retirement/a new life, encouraging youth to stay healthy & young. LEO's REALITY…POVERTY’s END…DREAM LAUNCH!

Descreva seu trabalho como inovador social (máximo de 150 palavras)

As Earthlings our work is so innovative, it is not yet well known worldwide, but greatly received in local regions. Our seed/kind of grassroots innovation comes from (35+) years of travel experience between the mates of teamLEOnardo. From Los Angeles to Nepal, Alaska to South America, India to Europe and Australia to Japan & many more places/routes in between, our unique brand of social innovation begins, where our birth places end - sowing in us all an indigenous nature to roam - free from the ignorance of borders in our new global village, Earth! In teamLEOnardo's workshop, the sound of social innovation is in the voices of contributors visiting their investment from time to time, where helping out gives them a "hands on" experience of home/hand-made fun, education & community supported activity! The PedalLEOtour2010 will be LEO's way of giving back to all the 'global villages' visited along the way. For teamLEOnardo, social innovation is giving LEO your 'two cents' by reserving a pilot's seat in your name with comments & suggestions, by pitching in where LEO needs help, & by reminding others to stay tuned for Hover Day. VOTE for your FREEDOM, earthling, thank you! DREAM SHARED!

Upon arriving in Srinagar, Kashmir in 2007, J.D. Walsh was keenly aware of two things: how much he -- a tall white man -- stood out, and the tense geopolitical circumstances that necessitated heavy security measures.

Visions of Youth

Our idea is to compile portraits and short statements from Pittsburgh youth and with their input, create a digital slideshow that will be projected on public buildings throughout Allegheny county. The student statements will focus on young people's ability to think globally and analyze their place and identity within their society, their school, their neighborhood, their state, their country, as well as, within the world.

What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?

The innovation of this project lies in the belief that youth view the world in a much more sincere and clear way than adults. It is common knowledge that as adults, we can not help but view the world through certain societal, cultural, religious, and economic filters. Since children have not experienced many of the life-changing events that begin to form our filters, it is our belief that their thoughts and feelings are more altruistic and pure, and command the attention and respect of adults.

Impacto

Crianças & Jovens

What will be the impact of your idea?

It is our intention to show children that not only are their thoughts and feelings valid, but also that they can utilize art (both photography and writing) to express their sentiments to their peers, their families, their neighborhoods, and indeed, the world. It is our hope that this project will instill in children the ideal that many adults know to be true, that is, that that youth are the future of our societies.
We need to engage adults in the Pittsburgh area in a socio-communal dialogue that will address the issues facing the youth of today. By confronting the general public with these portraits and statements addressing youth issues, we hope to enliven the community's interest and activism in these aforementioned issues.

Crianças & Jovens

What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?

In order to launch this project, we will need a team of eight qualified, motivated people willing to dedicate approximately 20 hours per week for approximately 3 months to meet with school officials, execute photo-shoots with students, document student's statements, compile and archive all files and resources, produce a digital slideshow and functional website. This team of people must have a passion for working with youth, as well as, a sincere desire to have a hand in creating social change. This project will require $25,000 in labor and resources, as outlined in our completed budget (available upon request.)
Our team will garner community support by contacting and engaging approximately 24 schools across 7 school districts throughout allegheny county. The schools that we have chosen were based on a combination of PSSA 2008 math and verbal scores, geographic location, tax brackets, gender ratios, as well as, ethnic make up in order to address as many varied issues from as diverse a student body as is possible within allegheny county. We intend to partner with the administration and faculty of these schools so as to reach the maximum number of interested students.

We are looking for ideas from people who can make them happen. Tell us about yourself or your team.

As the team leader for this project, I bring many years of youth leadership and school administration familiarity to the table. In 2003 I founded the first GSA(Gay Straight Alliance) in a public school in the state of Pennsylvania to be recognized by GLSEN(the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) and the HRC (the Human Rights Campaign.) In the past, I have been a guest panelist at the True Colors Conference, a national LGBT youth leadership conference, and I was a finalist for the position of State Representative for GLSEN's annual Day of Silence.
Over the last ten years I have been heavily involved in all levels of theatrical production. My time with different theater groups has taught me how to be highly effective, how to inspire and motivate others in my team, and how to accomplish our goals in a timely fashion.
Recently, I founded the photographic club, Lightworks, at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Through teamwork we held an excellent exhibition of student work, ventured into fundraising, and garnered support from our faculty and the student body.
I have chosen several members of my team, but more are needed. I intend to hold open interviews for individuals who are

Starting this year, myself with my students are organising to hold an annual music challenge , for students only, which will involve both individual and group performers. In this, using flstudio8 software, we are composing five tracks in different styles i,e. RnB, reggae, hiphop, dancehall and afrobeat. We shall then send a copy of thesel tracks to each of the participating schools. The participants will then have to create their own song alongside one of these tracks. They will practice their song and are to present it on a concert where there will be a big audience and judges. On the competition day all the music will be played live by a band.Thereafter the winners will be announced and will recleive big prizes. Most important of these will be a chance to record their music in a good recording studio.

Me and my music students are going to organize an annual music challenge for teenage music students in high school. Participants will be provided with five tracks(which we are going to create with my students using flstudio8 software) of different styles of music and are to select one and compose a song alongside the track. They will have to present this song on the competition day to the judges and an audience.

What makes your idea unique?

For many decades now in my country, their have been music competitions but these have not really benefited the students who offer music as a subject and those young talented musicians. All competitions held have aimed at schools as choirs but the individual participants have not gained much.In these competitions participants have had to select one song by a famous music star and prctice and present it for adjudication. As a result the competitions have always ended and the participants end up just like that with no realistic benefit.Their talents have ended there in vain.More to that the young performers especially high school students have been scared to take part in these competitions because they are scared to compete against more experienced and older performers. In this music challenge we are aiming at giving our young music students plus others an opportunity to develop their music ideas to the fullest until they make it to big stages. We now also believe that a student who has completed high school education must be able to sustain themselves using the skills and knowledge they have acquired in school and be of use to the society. Both the learners and the community must benefit from our education and music is well known to send the loudest message. We want to give our students an ability to change their lives and those of others by the time they leave our schools.

Most important here is that I teach in a purely girls school comprising always over1000 girls and I want to make girls believe that they to can make it just like their male counterparts. There is obvious need to fight an inferiority complex developed by female learners themselves and their seniors as well. This will motivate many other girls out there if they see their colleagues tussling it out competitively with the male counterparts.

What impact have you had?

The impact I have had so far can greatly be witnessed in my school. My senior five students can now all create a simple track with out words using flstudio8 and this has had them believe that they too can be great music producers. I have also been able to convince five schools to join this competition with each school promising to take part in each category. Many of my students can now capture, edit and make a simple music video using simple home cameras and simple video editing software like pinnacle and adobe. Within my own school we have started staging simple performances to the students. We are also creatiing tracks now for variious hymns in the protestant hymn book and this has made praise and worship more interesting. We have also started teaching our students various stage instruments like the keyboards and guitars.

Describe the primary problem(s) that your project is addressing.

•Many youth are currently unemployed in Uganda yet they have got certain skills they could apply to earn a living.
•The moral behavior of our young youth starts deteriorating during the teenage age and they need to be put to activities that make good use of their time.
•Us as high school teachers spend six years with the students and send them to world practically with no basic skills to sustain them and their immediate community.
•Female learners are often left behind in many important activities with a backward mind that these activities are meant for male learners.

Describe the steps that your organization is taking to make your project successful.

•My school has offered to host the competitions at the school theatre.
•I have been able to teach many girls the various software using the school’s computer center.
•My school has consistently held an annual inter house music, dance and drama competition which gives an opportunity to over 1000 girls to get to stage and present something. This has greatly erased stage fright from them.
•The school has at many occasions allowed students to present musical plays in different theatres which have gradually increased the students levels of performance.
•The students have also been taken out on numerous occasions to watch operas, jazz shows, concertos, and many other musical performances.
•At many occasions my school invites different local musicians to come and perform and talk to the girl as well about different issues concerning teenagers.

Crianças & Jovens

What will it take for your project to be successful over the next three years? Success in Year 1:

•Being able to hold the first competition show and having at least 50 performers both boys and girls.
•Having the show recorded and broadcast on TV by various local TV stations for the whole public to watch and appreciate.

Sucesso no Ano 2:

•Being able to find the necessary sponsorship for this competition so as to market it among more schools and the whole community at large.
•Being able to record the songs of the winners in a real music studio.

Sucesso no Ano 3:

•Enlarging the competition to cover other parts of the country with regional competitions held before the final competition.
•Having the competition to be done in a public place where anyone can join the audience for the performers to perform for a mixed crowd other than fellow students only.

Crianças & Jovens

Você tem um plano de negócio ou um plano estratégico? (sim/não)

•Yes we have got a strategic plan for the whole project but no business plan yet. We are hoping to work with schools around Kampala city for the first competition and expand the competition to other regions in subsequent years. We are going to send our proposals to the different companies that are potential sponsors right away and link up with the media houses to market the idea. We are also aiming at pairing up the winners to work with each other after the competition for even better songs and get then work with a professional music producer.

Quais são as três ações mais importantes necessárias para desenvolver sua iniciativa ou organização? PASSO 1:

•Convince the schools on the practical benefits of such a project to their learners and have them send their learners onto the competition.

Quais são as três ações mais importantes necessárias para desenvolver sua iniciativa ou organização? PASSO 2:

•Obtaining different software and hardware to teach the different students and teachers on how to create their own simple music just with a computer, a microphone and a pair of headphones.A number of computers, microphones, speakers and headphones will need to be given to the different music departments in the schools.

Quais são as três ações mais importantes necessárias para desenvolver sua iniciativa ou organização? PASSO 3:

• Enough financial ability to involve more schools and participants in the competition. Equipment like video cameras, a good public address system and simple music recording gadgets to enable easy production of the songs at no cost to the owners. In short to set up a schools' recording center.

Describe the expected results of these actions.

•After the schools have been convinced to send their students the competition will be held and this will definitely attract companies and media to sponsor the event and make bigger to attract a wider attention from the society. Hence more people will be reached.
•When there is acquisition of both soft and hardware many more students wont have to wait to receive finished tracks but instead will create their own and entirely own the song. The preceding performances will have more variety and this will give the performer liberty to discover their best potentials.
•Recording a song in a good studio in my country today costs over $50.This is too much money for a beginning musician and they might remember these are school children who even don’t have jobs to earn. So a studio to record the winners music for free would be of great benefit to them since they would be guaranteed of having a copy of their music on CD.

Crianças & Jovens

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

•Six and a half years when I left high school I got to accept that I have not got a song of my own yet I studied music and passed with excellent grades. As if not enough most of the famous local musicians in my country have all made their plight in the past eight years and are now earning big yet they had no music education. I meant a former music classmate in high school and as we chatted about music we were forced to believe that out of 17 of us who completed high school as music students, only 2 were active in music. What happened to the remaining 15? We sat back and enjoyed our moments. WE used perform for an audience of 1500 students every week and leave them commenting and from that we are supposed to have taken on audiences outside the school. We remembered that despite all that ability we had, our music teacher never took us an extra step to turn us into real musicians while he still had control of us. On leaving high school we all went for different field and up to now non of us has succeeded yet we had been already succeeded in music and its now that we are gathering ourselves to start performing again and we are all thinking about the time we lost elsewhere.

Tell us about the social innovator behind this idea.

•Richard Bukenya is a Ugandan aged 29 years and works for Gayaza High School as a teacher of music. What would prevent your project from being a success?

Such a kind of project could only fail if:
•the schools are not convinced enough to send their students to participate in the competitions.
•there was alleged unfairness in judgment.
•There was not enough equipment to play the music and record it for both video and audio.
•There is no awareness from the public about the whole competition and hence commanding a small fan base. All performers would like attract great recognition among the fans.
•If many schools keep not having computer centers which prevents the students to lean the different technologies in music production.
.Also if the winners are not rightly followed up to ensure that their music is recorded and put out to the public.

Dancing through Pittsburgh

To create an interesting, user-friendly installing piece designed from various dance movements. Working with the dance movement first and translating it into the design of the installation piece. A work which when completed is open to the public to move through inspiring and causing them to dance. A work that uses found objects and that by its design has the ability to make sound, a sort of personal music, when the parts of the installation are moved or touched by the person moving through it.

What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?

We would like to work with youth to create an interdisciplinary work involving dance/movement, an installation piece, music and video. Participants will work with Mary Miller/Mary Miller Dance Company along with an installation artist, a musician and a video artist to design and construct a finished installation work, which, upon completion, will remain standing, open and available to the public to ‘dance’ through or watch others ‘dance’ through. The goal is to construct an installation that by its design has those moving through the installation dancing. The installation will also allow people to make their own music as they move through. The project will begin with the movement. The young participants will work with Mary Miller to explore their own movement ideas and share their ideas with the others. Ms. Miller will guide the participants in putting together movement phrases and translating them into the structural ideas they will need to design the installation in order to produce the same movement when traveling through it. Using found objects to construct the installation the artists will guide the youth in choosing objects and design ideas that will allow each ‘dancer’ to create their own sound. The video aspect of this proposal has many potential uses, from historical recording and usage by the participants in the design and construction to recording the movement/dances of those traveling through the installation and allowing others to view what has previously transpired in the installation.

What will be the impact of your idea?

In all aspects of this project, the participating youth will be involved in decision making with a voice in the design and creation of the finished work. The motivation is to get youth moving, thinking creatively, communicating and feeling pride in accomplishment. Working with artists and other youth opens up channels of communication, understanding abstract ideas and converting them into tangible designs. The experience of creating this public artwork involves the participants as a group in creative problem solving, creative thinking and the hands-on creation of an artwork that will have an impact on the community by being open and available to the public. This work will get people moving!

Crianças & Jovens

What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?

This project will be open enrollment for approximately 15 -20 youth wishing to be involved. We would inform youth groups, art centers, schools etc and invite those interested youths to get in touch with us. While the movement aspect will take place in the dance studio where MMDC rehearses, the installation itself would need to have a site. We would need access to an artist’s studio, (which may be accessible through the installation artist), for work on pieces of the installation and storage space. After talking with the other artists involved, we would speak with Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, churches and schools to see about such available space. We would need $25,000.00 to cover all costs of all aspects of this work.

The motivation is to get youth moving, thinking creatively, communicating and feeling pride in accomplishment.

In an effort to take the distance out between the art form and the audience, I have been creating “On Site” and “Site Specific” works since the inception of the Mary Miller Dance Company in 1984. For twenty-four years, (MMDC will turn 25 on July 1, 2009), the Mary Miller Dance Company has designed new and explorative works of collaborative and interdisciplinary works, reached out to youth and marginalized populations, engineered artistic and social collaborations, and created cultural and educational value for diverse and highly appreciative populations within Allegheny and western Pennsylvania. MMDC’s focus specifically includes the development of young persons of all ages as consumers of the arts and participants in arts-related activities, to the eventual strengthening of their quality of life.

The team is not yet together. I work with musicians and video artists on a regular basis and would choose form those I know well, inviting the artists whom I felt would be the best for this project to join me.

The project will give Pittsburgh youth a chance to design and play games that express their perspective on local environmental concerns. The project is a hybrid of theatre, and game play mixed with community engagement. Such cross-pollination of forms is important both to the evolution of the forms themselves, but most importantly to engaging young audiences and demonstrating the value of art in understanding and engaging the world around them. There is no greater issue confronting the world’s population today than environmental degradation. While today’s adults debate ways of beginning to address these problems, it is today’s youth who will have to implement solutions. This experience will foster concrete understanding of environmental issues and create a personal investment in successful solutions.

What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?

EcoPlayGround will work with Pittsburgh youth to design and create an interactive theatre/game that takes players on a journey as they explore an ecologically significant site in the city. With the guidance of a team of adults, a core creative group of youths will explore Pittsburgh’s ecology and the legacy of the region’s manufacturing industry and overlay their own perspective to devise a story about the world they will inherit. They will then turn their story into a game to be played by other youths in which narrative, clues, and instructions will be relayed via mobile phone—already the preferred mode of communication for today’s young audience.
As we evolve from passive media consumption into a culture of participation enabled by technology, existing art forms must adapt to youth interests and perspectives about the world. Projects that use games to develop interest and activism in tomorrow’s leaders will be critical to their success in confronting these complex issues.

What will be the impact of your idea?

Creating a story/game that integrates their own ideas with their investigation of ecological issues will give young people the agency to use what they learn in ways that they themselves define.
Playing the game will awaken a deeper, more concrete understanding of the environment and its impact on players’ well-being and create investment in a healthy ecology. Players will also need to rely on teamwork to solve the game’s challenges and ensure a successful outcome.
For both groups, the collective engagement needed to succeed will foster a sense of community and model the collaborative effort necessary to find solutions to environmental problems in the real world.
Broader impact will come from testing a new model for civic engagement by youth that fosters inquiry and creativity in equal measure. The project methodology will be thoroughly documented and offered as an open source model on which other youths can build in telling new stories about issues specific to their communities.

Crianças & Jovens

What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?

We will seek young creators from schools whose goals align with EcoPlayGround, and who can include the project in classroom syllabi for the coming school year to launch the finished game in the fall of 2010.
Existing technology could support a basic treasure-hunt style game. Costs to augment this could range from $5 to $25k depending on the complexity of the system required. The game is one of exploring existing spaces, so the technology can be scaled to fit the budget without diminishing the core experience.
CMU will offer seed money through The Performance and Ecology Initiative, directed by Wendy Arons. We will seek to partner with local research and tech concerns to adapt technology for the game. Additional funding may be sought based on the success of those efforts.
Other costs toward which the requested $25k will be allocated include fees for principal artist, Allen Hahn, to oversee the project, and for experts in education/outreach and game design to assist in its implementation.

Allen Hahn’s lighting design work has been seen all over the US and in festivals and opera houses across Europe. He considers light and space to be primary influences on character actions in the drama. His latest work explores using the narrative possibilities of found spaces in the city to imagine the city’s past and spark creative thought and dialogue about its future.
Wendy Arons is a Professor of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University. She has worked on numerous devised performance pieces, and as Director of CMU's Performance and Ecology initiative she will be organizing an Eco-drama Festival in Fall 2009.
Both project directors have professional experience with pioneering companies in devised theatre and are well suited to expand this paradigm outside the theatre. We have strong relationships in local arts and technology communities from which additional team members will be sought based on their expertise and their belief in the project’s vision of a vibrant youth voice in Pittsburgh.

AMP ALIVE! - A Living Amphitheater

A dynamic space of inspiration, and a monumental site for local youth and the community-at-large. An outdoor, sculpted-earth amphitheater will provide a flexible arena for a variety of events, speaking for those who help design and construct it, and speaking to those who will gather within its bounds. The amphitheater will be the product of a community-based process commencing with forums to gather input from kids, teens and community members to reflect the needs and aspirations of our youth population.

Ideas will be generated thru workshops with a landscape architect, designers, and Wilkinsburg’s youth and community members. These workshops will include a presentation of the site plan, the inherent challenges, and how the hurdles of location and budget can often be overcome with good design. At the initial forums, youth from Wilkinsburg area schools will be encouraged to discuss the daily happenings of their lives and how this can shape changes they would like to see in the community and in the world. Visits to the site and educational hands-on projects will guide design opportunities, encouraging an interweaving of ideas to create a space of interaction, ensuring participation of kids and teens at every step along the way. Youth participants will then be inspired by local volunteer artists to explore their creativity and ideas thru public art using recycled materials. Together their ideas will build upon one another and the recycled works of art created by youth will speak to the community by serving as permanent art features in the amphitheater.

What is your idea? What makes your project innovative? Why is it important?

The amphitheater will represent the living elements in our community by incorporating interactive, natural components such as raised bed planters and water features. It will manage storm water retention thru sculpted-earth design, rain catchment systems, a rain garden, and permeable turf and landscaped surfaces. Raised bed plantings will accommodate a variety of organically grown, edible plants including berry-producing bushes, sensory herbs, vegetables, and vibrant flowers. Vining gourds cultivated to become musical instruments will have the added benefit of a pleasing aesthetic during the growing season. Fruit trees will be woven together, eventually providing a naturally shaded cove encouraging contemplation of goals achieved and motivation for future projects. Students with technical inclinations may be interested in creating art that harnesses nature’s renewable resources, such as a solar powered LED security light. The amphitheater is innovative in that it will be a living organism providing our youth a much-needed reconnection with nature. By inheriting a space that will continue to grow and evolve thru the years largely because of their efforts, Wilkinsburg’s youth will awaken a sense of pride in themselves as stewards of the community and the planet. To further cement youth ownership and responsibility, progress will be documented photographically by kids and teens, then posted to a website. As volunteers from the Wilkinsburg community step forward to mentor our youth, it is our hope we will instill a desire for those touched by our efforts to continue the legacy.

Crianças & Jovens

What will be the impact of your idea?

Wilkinsburg has been challenged in terms of providing our kids with engaging after-school and summer activities. The amphitheater project will offer a comprehensive plan to provide an underserved youth population with a nurturing urban oasis of beauty, creativity and most importantly, a place to be heard. Students may be engaged at any or all parts of the design process and installation, gaining a sense of accomplishment, ownership and motivation. The amphitheater has the flexibility to be utilized in a number of different ways to give youth a voice, such as music and dance performances, art exhibitions, and community feasts celebrating the edibles grown onsite. Maintenance is normally seen as a challenge, but we view it as a chance to foster a sense of ownership and pride, as well as an opportunity for students to gain skills that may benefit them as they seek jobs. Ultimately, our community group envisions a significant indoor/outdoor art and garden facility in Wilkinsburg that will allow community mentoring to flourish by providing a haven for creativity and green job training. The living amphitheater is the seed to catalyze our goal of revolutionary community development.

Crianças & Jovens

What will it take to launch your idea? How will you secure community support and youth participation?

We see this project as a powerful opportunity to involve all levels of community. A grassroots campaign will recruit volunteers of all artistic disciplines, as well as community members and members of government who may contribute mentoring abilities to the development of our youth. To get the word out for this all-inclusive call to arms, we will seek local television coverage and online/print exposure in local news media. Acquiring students from the schools will come from interaction with teachers and administrators, and presentations directly to the students when possible. Community meetings will be held to organize a roster of volunteer talent and to encourage collaboration of cross-disciplines. Additionally, we intend to capitalize upon a great movement currently occurring with Wilkinsburg Borough, spearheaded by the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation (WCDC). The WCDC recently partnered with Burt Hill Architects and Delta Development to create a master plan for the business district corridor along Penn Avenue. Wilkinsburg Borough is also working with the Office of Public Art to establish guidelines and procedures and to implement a public art education program.
