BeeAble is a new initiative that is focused on evidence-based services for youth and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Up to date research, person-centered planning and positive behaviour supports will be used to inspire community involvement and artistic outreach services to vulnerable populations.
Initial start-up will focus on engaging community members and establishing an online presence for input and inquiry. It will also establish a "seeding store" where individuals can donate or consign sell-able arts and crafts, with proceeds going toward service launch.
In order to maintain ethical standards in service creation,BeeAble will then go public with the establishment of their undergraduate research center. Working in collaboration with colleges and universities in the the extended region will enable this center's ability to bring cutting edge research to the community level, for many struggling individuals and families.
Video modeling(VM) is a video representation of a live person (not computer generated) performing a task successfully to completion without assistance. Video self-modeling consists of a video being taken of a participant performing the desired task. This may be acquired by natural observation or through script learning. Within the video there may be promptings or encouragement when necessary, as the video is then edited displaying only unassisted, successful execution of the desired task or behaviour(Hingsburger, 1998; Nikopoulos & Keenan, 2007). Both of these methods are considered evidence-based interventions for individuals with ASD. This will establish BeeAble as an ethical service provider that maintains the high standards of service necessary for this population group.
Many individuals on the spectrum are highly verbal, and often share in the interest of scientific and technology based activities. These desirable and profitable skills have the potential to move toward a sustainable future for both, individuals being served and BeeAble. Most importantly, this program will address many of the concerns of aging parents with adult children on the spectrum. By elevating the value and employ-ability of this population within society, we will move closer to the ideal of an inclusive workplace and community.
