Citizens worldwide are in need of equal access to the newest technology and innovations that increase citizen participation and influence social change. Ethical Citizen Media (ECM) applies universally applicable Citizen Journalist tactics ;that preserve and gain human rights and social justice. The objectives of Ethical Citizen Media are to:

1) Provide indigenous peoples with safe and ethical journalist tactics through training, certification, and mentorships.
2) Increase participation in citizen journalism and social justice, by providing ethical recording, reporting and training, and technology.

Ethical Citizen Media (ECM) was originally submitted to Citizen Media: A Global Innovation Competition in July of 2011. The success of the ECM project was measured in its use in the Occupy movement in Los Angles. As part of preserving the peace in the city, several citizen journalists used the model ;in combination with security and media coverage of the events. Success in this particular social movement was measured in the fact that Los Angles was a model for peaceful protests. Anonymity and safety was maintained by protecting the identities of on the ground practitioners. Ethical Citizen Media Journalists developed working relationships with authorities, and local media -who often relied on both our security, and information for their mainstream reporting.

Citizen Media refers to the ways in which audiences can become participants in the media using the different resources offered. In the modern age, new technologies have brought about different media -that have since become the framework for increasing citizen-participation in addressing social issues. Ethical Citizen Media allows the average citizen to participate in the transformative processes of change and events within their communities.

The idea behind Citizen Journalism is that people without professional journalism training can learn to use the tools of modern technology; and the global distribution of the Internet, to create, augment, and fact-check media on their own or in collaboration with others.

Citizen Media has bloomed with the advent of technological tools and systems that facilitate production and distribution of media. Of these technologies, none has advanced Citizen Media more than the Internet. With the spreading of these ideas comes the need to put in place programs that educate and provide the materials needed to facilitate Ethical Citizen Media and journalism in under-served areas of the world.

The innovation of the Ethical Citizen Media project is that it uses new technology to deliver learning that goes beyond the classroom and into communities. By increasing citizen participation in social and civil activities, Ethical Citizen Media engages populations. These are the communities that would benefit most from the introduction of these programs, because such programs provide access to tools that “first world” citizens have had for almost a decade.

Advances in technology, and the use of social media and mobile devices, levels the playing field between traditional media sources and the common citizen. Additionally, ECM increases access to social events such as news, reports of abuse, and social participation for those who have a limited voice in social change. ECM respects the values and ethics of the culture in which it is used, while being aligned with international human rights laws.

For example, Citizen Media and Citizen Journalism allow the novice reporter to share information ranging from a city council meeting to an online forum. Or practitioners can fact-check a newspaper article from the mainstream media and point out factual errors or bias on a blog. Practitioners are also able to snap a digital photo of a newsworthy event happening in their community and post it online, or videotape an event and post it on a site such as You Tube.

The project fills the need for an increase, as well as the demand, for digital technology, basic mobile hand-held units, (smartphone devices), and secure and confidential SMS/MMS system to solve the problem of a lack of devices and projects to meet the demands of the citizens working for justice in the DRC and other marginalized cultures. Mobile phones will de distributed pre-programmed, and software and application training will be provided by volunteers. Training will be conducted live and via existing social media gathering sites currently used for strategic planning and education on laws and developments. Partner humanitarian groups and Train-The-Trainer apprentices will assist with delivering the plan, and implementing the project/action. This solution serves as a current and tested model reflecting technological advances and methods in citizen media and social journalism.

Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites will be the means in which Eway will increase citizen participation. The Eway Ethical Citizen Media design is accompanied by a code of ethics to guide practitioners in the reporting and dissemination of information and news. Training and implementation designs will empower citizens to participate in social activism, while increase access to the internet and technology. Ethical Citizen Media education, is citizen empowerment through the use mobile phones- for citizen journalism.

The reporting system and information exchange tactics of Ethical Citizen Media is deigned to protect the practitioner by uploading information to a secure, outside-source, server monitored by third party humanitarian agencies or NGO's. Citizens cultivating change can upload their statuses, photos, etc. to a safe and secure editing-aggregation, and using secure tactics. The secure server and upload channels are owned by Eway, and will ensure ethical hosting, uploading, storage. and monitoring. Successful citizen media campaigns are championed as a result of careful design and planning. In the process of designing the outreach and educational activities, developers have included citizen from Nairobi Kenya, and the DRC.

The focus is to promote citizen participation through the use of mobile phone technology and citizen journalism -laws will be changed, and the high-level actors will be the citizens who start to make change occur now. Cultures deprived of FREE speech, and access to internet and social media, are in need of tactics that preserve and gain human rights and social justice.

Congrats, Darren, on all the success of the ECM project. Excited about the ways you're exploring our new platform, and eager to refine our tools to shine even more light on your great work. A quick question about the impact report you filed. You mentioned the following:

"The model was successful, and reliable in assisting students ans citizen protesters, and social activists, aiding citizen journalists in covering actions of social justice."

Can you help me understand this a bit better? What does "success" mean to you here? Is there anyway you can show or demonstrate this success to the rest of the CM community? How might we be able to help you do that?

Warm regards,

Tim

Hello Tim,

Thanks for your comment. The success of the ECM project was measured in its use in the Occupy movement in Los Angles. As part of preserving the peace in the city, several citizen journalists used the model ;in combination with security and media coverage of the events. Success in this particular social movement is reflected in the fact that Los Angles was a model site for peaceful protests, thus serving as an example for other locations. Anonymity and safety was maintained by protecting the identities of several on the ground practitioners, who to this day have had their identities protected, as to avoid any possible recourse or retribution from hostile authorities. Eway soon developed working relationships with local media, who often relied on both our information, as well as our secure tactics for their mainstream reporting. Again, thank you Tim for your interest in the Ethical Citizen Media project.

Ethical media is a woderful idea , i just wish i can get involved as volunteer or consultant. I like information , its powerful agent for change, but in politically volatile nations such as DRC sometime in the past and Somalia for example, it must be done carefully . For nations that have media law its safe. What if activism robe into ethical media, political activists are always looking fo a chance to propagate their ideals , some have spoiled religion such as islam which is a religion that emprace peace and happines yet religious fundamentalists non God fearing have hijacked it for use to propagate terorism and devide the world into 2, christians and muslims. Use of mobile phones in civic education must be done carefully, all adults now have phones, media editing is a just component for ethical media otherwise chriminals may hyjack it just like they are doing in religion. Otherwise this idea can change the world.

Ethical Citizen Media applies universally applicable Citizen Journalist tactics ;that preserve and gain human rights and social justice. New technology: digital media and software, mobile devices, social media, and radio and television broadcasting, are the tools used by regular citizens for regular citizens.

ECM has recently been implemented on a small scale in Nigeria, through a partnership with Achievers' Rock Intl Ministry,https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Nigerian-Chronicles/219453994806347?ref=ts, addressing the fuel subsidies. We have also established a partnership with The Dolphin Anti-rape Org Game Avatar HD . in Kenya http://dolphinanti-rape.org/.

The use of modern technology and the internet has made access to information easier. People in under-served populations throughout the world have limited access to credible information -creating obstacles and limitations to influence change. Ethical Citizen Media training offers certification in recording, reporting, and broadcasting news and events via social media and world aggregates. Train-The-Trainer programs fill the need for more qualified Citizen Journalists in marginalized cultures
