Make A Difference is a platform that empowers youth to become change leaders who make positive social impact and create self sustaining communities.

There are 2 million children growing up in orphanages and street shelters in India today. They are there because of no fault of their own.If we do nothing today, tomorrow 94% of them won’t study in a college.

Make A Difference is India’s largest youth teacher network that provides a platform for high-potential college students to make a difference; 10 children at a time.

MAD, when it takes up a community, finds children in the community who need to be served, finds the volunteers from the community’s young population, and then puts the two together and provides the necessary framework and training to make the change happen.

MAD today deploys 1300 trained and motivated young teachers every week to teach 3500 children in 19 Indian cities.

By end of 2012, MAD intends to scale to 25 cities in India and will provide quality education and experiences to 5000 children living in orphanages and street shelter homes.

The biggest factor that is lacking in the lives of our children is probably a safe eco-system provided by parents.

MAD PROVIDES

- One on one attention and support.
- Dreams to aspire to.
- Life-skills and academic support.

We believe that what Children at Risk need are not second-hand clothes, or left-over food. What they need is a long term support system to support their dreams.

Problema

A typical street shelter has an average child to adult ratio of 1:25. The average child to adult ratio for most of us has been 2:1. The adults we have around us when we’re young play a pivotal role in our overall development. So much so that, 60 percent of a child’s academic achievement is determined by factors such as poverty, homelessness, lack of employment opportunities and absent parents. Our children are affected by all these issues. As a result, 72% of them would have dropped out of school before completing standard 10.

Solução

What support DO parents provide to their children? Emotional safe space. Exposure to the world. Motivation and self belief. When provided the right exposure, given the right support, motivated at the right times, and cared for, our children will start performing as well as any other child anywhere. MAD PROVIDES - One on one attention and support. - Dreams to aspire to. - Life-skills and academic support.

Exemplo

MAD has the following expertise to Make a Difference today. MAD Tool #1: Platform for the Youth 46.6 million: Number of illiterate children living in India. 48.7 million: Number of college students in India. Make A Difference provides a space for young people to step in, lead and make a difference in their own communities. By providing on-ground exposure, actively initiating dialogue and establishing a culture of entrepreneurship, MAD transforms youth into a potent social movement to strategically impact children at risk around India. MAD Tool #2: Program Expertise 56: The number of hours a child spends in the English Program a year. 1, 94, 800: The number of hours of teaching experience that the English Project has generated so far. MAD Nationally employs a panel of experts who conduct extensive need analysis and research. Based on results appropriate curriculum is identified and piloting is done in a structured manner and finally the programs are rolled out nationally. MAD Tool #3: Process Expertise 9000: The number of children in MAD’s classrooms by 2020. 45: The number of cities with active MAD chapters in the next five years. 6: The number of core team members required to start a MAD chapter. 30: The number of days required to set-up and have a chapter running on ground! Taking up a problem, finding a solution, and then scaling it is not an easy task. MAD has already managed to scale 3 of its flagships projects across its National footprint. Valuable expertise has been gained by our Fellows as far as setting up, establishing processes and maintaining them throughout the year is concerned. MAD Tool #4: Quality control 0: The number of classes missed a week due to volunteer absence. 85: The number of centers that MAD teaches at today. 820: The number of classes that happen across India every week. MADapp, MAD's internally developed volunteer management program, provides real-time information on every class that happens in MAD, the teachers who took that class, the children who attended the class, the lesson taught in class and the progress made by each child. This information is used to nationally drive the quality standards within MAD. MAD Tool #5: Knowledge Exchange 4: Number of people who started Make A Difference. 36: Number of people at MAD’s first ever National Conference. 17: Number of waking working hours during a regular MAD Conference 520: Projected estimate for number of Fellows at MAD’s 2015 conference. Twice a year, MAD Fellows from across the country are invited to MAD Conferences to participate in a unique learning process. MAD’s conferences are intensive 3-4 day affairs where Fellows are put through path-making/breaking workshops, do-it-yourself sessions and intense debates, all with a view of increasing the efficiency of the functioning of MAD chapters across India.
