Esther Dyson - edyson@edventure.com, Esther Dyson does business as EDventure Holdings, the reclaimed name of the company she owned for 20-odd years before selling it to CNET Networks in 2004. In the last few years, she has turned her sights towards IT and health care. Her primary activity is investing in start-ups and guiding many of them as a board member. Her board seats include Boxbe, CVO Group (Hungary), Eventful.com, Evernote, IBS Group (Russia, advisory board), Meetup, Midentity (UK), NewspaperDirect, and WPP Group and Yandex (Russia). Some of her past direct IT investments include Flickr, Del.icio.us, BrightMail, Medstory and Orbitz. Dyson was the founding chairman of ICANN from 1998 to 2000, and was also chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation in the 90's.
Gilles Frydman - kosherfrog@gmail.com, Gilles Frydman is the head of ACOR, the Association of Cancer Online Resources, founded in 1995 in New York, and the largest online cancer patient community with 65 000 patients and caregivers. ACOR’s 159 electronic lists deliver approximately 1.5 million email messages weekly. The ACOR community has demonstrated its ability to accelerate the distribution of quality information regarding trials, treatments, pharmacovigilance. Gilles, who grew up in France, is a co-founder and past president of the Society for Participatory Medicine. He is and always will be involved in new projects that will continue to bring the power of the Internet to each individual patient.

In many countries, people don't have access to free and reliable health information or, if they do, it is somewhat limited and not timely (people may have to wait a long time before they get to talk to a doctor). Besides, doctors in places where the health system is overloaded, do not have the time to educate their patients and explain all the intricacies of the diagnosed condition or the suggested treatment. So how do people find health information that is free, reliable and timely? How do they find the support they need to deal with their condition?
These are the questions that Medico.com is trying to answer.

We offer a large database of reliable articles where people can find a detailed, yet jargon free, explanation to several conditions and procedures. For specific concerns, they may ask questions that are answered by a lively community of health professionals and also other users, who are free to share their experience and knowledge.
The quality is assured by 100% moderation - all question and answers are moderated to comply with our policies and quality standards. For example, in order to avoid wrong diagnostics and treatments, medical advice is not allowed on the website and we always advise people to consult with a doctor for personal diagnostics, treatment and prescriptions.

A person begins to experience excess thirst, fatigue and frequent urination. She books a doctor, but the appointment is only in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, she researches the web and finds a helpful article about Diabetes and wonders if that isn't what is causing her problem. She reads and notes down doubts to ask the doctor. During her appointment she is more specific and the exams confirm the suspicion: she has diabetes. The doctor only says that she has to be more careful with the diet and exercise frequently, but she arrives home full of doubts and insecurities. She access Medico.com and reads about diet for diabetes, complications, exercises and even checks the experience of other users. She finds information about two different types of diabetes and posts a question about how to differentiate one from the other. Another user who has type 1, explains the difference and she receives a notification by email. Now she knows better how to take care of herself and prevent future problems!

Our focus is on providing a platform for patient to patient sharing of information, because we believe that patients can help patients, some times even more than doctors can.
Unlike the others, we are targeting multiple languages and countries. We have launched versions of the website - in Spanish, Portuguese and now English, for India.

The parents of Elan Dekel worked at WHO, implementing health care systems in developing countries. He grew up with a strong inclination towards health matters, but dedicated his career to his natural talent: technology and the internet. Before founding Medico.com, Elan was at Google, where he was responsible for Google’s Product Management in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, where he could see that there were markets that didn't have good online resources for health. He then decided to associate his background to his interest in health to found Medico.com, an online community that could help people access reliable health information and connect with people who could give them support.

The idea is to offer the website to all markets that don't have access to good online content for health. We started in Spanish, in June, to cover not only Spain but most of Latin America. Four months later we launched in Brazil and, three months after that, in India. The plan is not only to expand to other markets but also to other channels: we are developing mobile capabilities to take health to people where (and when!) computers are not available.

We have launched in three different markets in the most spoken languages in the world (mandarim excluded), making our product accessible to millions of people worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of people benefit from our platform monthly.

The idea is to make our product accessible and well known also in Africa, Middle East and East Europe. We also want to partner with patient associations and health care providers to improve the quality of information and help them increase their reach as well.
