Malawi Birthing Project

Localização

Lilongwe
Malawi

The project is successfully integrating Traditional Birth Attendants into the health care system as SisterFriends to the pregnant women they would have delivered prior to the project. To date, 500 women have participated, all of which have received prenatal care and delivered at the clinic and none have died.

Reason:

It demonstrates the concept of sisterhood and the fact that women can work together across class and professional boundaries when incentivized to do so. It also adds the concept of joy in pregnancy as it is built on the foundation that the pregnant women will be supported and nurtured during pregnancy. This project transcends borders because it models the human characteristics of empathy, our need for inclusiveness and our ability to be natural leaders when invited and/or given the opportunity.
