A necessidade: Qual é o problema que você está tentando resolver?

In Mexico there is a lack of values that is strongly affecting society. One of the most affected cities is Ciudad Juarez, which is a border city with the United States. After giving it a lot of thought, Planta came to the conclusion that the problems (corruption, violence, fear, poverty, and greed, among others) can be addressed at a root level targeting the educational system. Children are growing up discouraged and with a sense of disappointment from the violence and fear surrounding them. Most of the problems revolving around the Mexican society are due to the lack of education, values and empathy among people, there is the need to focus on what is really important from the very beginning, from the root: education since grade 1.

The solution is to implement a series of workshops targeting elementary grade teachers of the private schools in Juarez, Mexico. Why teachers? Because in their hands is the future of our children, they are the ones shaping them. Teachers have to be aware of the importance of coaching them in the right way. The workshops comprise the importance of stressing values like equality, respect, coexistence, honesty, sharing, love, responsibility and happiness in every single course. Empathy among children will be the main tool to build from there those values, games and activities will be used to increase empathy.

The model comprises 4 phases.

Phase 1. Approach private schools executive directors and educate them about the program. Explain the importance, length of the program and level of commitment needed from them. After approval, we move to phase 2.

Phase 2. Teacher's workshop, which consists of activities just among teachers. The workshop will target all the teachers from grade 1 to 6 (elementary school) from the private schools (one school at a time):
Introduction
Role play to measure empathy levels among teachers
Importance of empathy, values and teaching what really matters
Success stories - why is empathy so important?
Evaluation of believed levels empathy in their classroom
Conclusion

Phase 2 will be a one day workshop.

Phase 3 Will also only comprise teachers, but will provide hands-on training and skills to develop empathy in their classrooms.

Phase 4. Monitoring and Evaluation
This phase involves teachers and students. Teachers will have to implement the empathy kit on a daily basis, but random visits will be performed where teachers will have to implement the empathy kit in front of Planta members. Students will be evaluated according to their knowledge and understanding of values, and their demonstrated levels of empathy.
As time goes by, visits will become less frequent but evaluation will continue, measuring students levels of empathy.

Our peers are top executives of several private schools from Juarez. We have been in contact with them for some time now and they are very interested in what we have to bring to the table. Other peers would be the University of Juarez, University of Texas at El Paso, the University for Peace. The universities help Planta network with the Mexican government and other NGO's around the world. Another important peer is the Red Juvenil de Juarez, which is a network of the most important NGO's in Juarez.
Planta has not identified competitors. Even though there are several organizations working towards education in Juarez, they are focusing on different approaches like art, social service or part time students.

It has created impact among people who have been exposed to the idea, everyone wants to see it come alive, but it is Planta's idea still.

Qual é a sua expectativa de impacto para os próximos 1 - 3 anos?

The projected impact over the next years is to have most (85%) private and public schools in Juarez under Planta's empathy program; having reached most of the children in Juarez.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

Some of the barriers we may encounter is the lack of trust in the model. People are sometimes very into the traditional models and innovative perspectives and models can seem like a threat. Also, most schools already have a class called Values, so they might consider the workshop to be too much emphasis on values and well-being instead of "actual" courses.

To have at minimum 5 schools under Planta's empathy model (Phase 1-3)

Develop the empathy workshops - empathy kit.

Atividade 2

Develop the plan to contact and "sell" the program to the most representative private schools. (phase 1)

Make contact and start to implement the intro and hands-on workshops. (phase 2 &3 )

I have been considering how to change the world for a while now, and I think it started during my Master's. I attended the UN mandated University for Peace, and we used to talk about changing the world all the time. After giving it a lot of thought I realized what had me there was my education. The opportunities I had been given were amazing and that was why I was pursuing a Master's degree in beautiful Costa Rica. So I realized then that education is the most important thing for children to grow to be the best they can be. The problem was that it was not only a whatever education. Schools needed to teach what really mattered: LIFE. Being happy is the single most important thing I noticed schools were missing in their syllabus. Nobody cared about that, everyone cares about the money and being successful. Well, you cant be successful without being happy. That was when I decided I wanted to teach children about happiness, well-being, values and sustainability. That was my AHA! moment!

Planta has a partnership with UACJ (the University of Juarez) and will hopefully get a partnership with UTEP (the University of Texas at El Paso) and the State's Department of Education.

Qual o perfil da equipe (colaboradores, voluntários etc.) que vai garantir o cumprimento das metas de crescimento identificadas por você na seção ‘Impacto Social’?

Planta has already identified possible staff members, among them are university professors (very experienced in projects and education), and university students from different majors (engineering, education, design and business) that are ready to get involved, also people working in the private sector have expressed interest in joining Planta when it begins operations.

Planta can offer research and information about several topics, included but not limited to: sports and peace, creating empathy, happiness, work-life balance, well-being, vegetarianism, etc.
Planta is also part of a collaboration network with other NGOs in Juarez and El Paso.
Planta's CEO Monica Morales is a very innovative person, always wanting to do things differently and spreading new ideas.
