A necessidade: Qual é o problema que você está tentando resolver?

Students need to learn that they can create material and social benefit through inspired application of their words and deeds. Children have a natural desire towards fairness: recognizing that they can help create a situation that attempts to even the playing field is transformative. Within the context of the classroom, students and teachers can become social activists and environmentalists, humanitarians, artists, business partners and friends. WORDS INTO DEEDS activates empathy in students by building written-word relationships that clarify their correspondents’ situations, then provides a platform to initiate humanitarian action. By engaging other cultures through writing, research and project organization, students fulfill curriculum demands and absorb important life lessons.

A Solução: Qual é a sua solução? Seja específico!

WORDS INTO DEEDS entails working with teachers here and in Uganda to develop a written-word exchange between students which includes a variety of creative and artistic forms of expression that meet Common Core Curriculum Standards for Writing & Social Studies; challenging students to develop fund-raising campaigns, using a variety of media and communication tools that fulfill curriculum standards; and providing assistance to teacher and student-ambassadors to travel to Uganda to work collaboratively to improve their schools and share resources and pedagogy. Providing the opportunity to act as ambassadors for this effort is the most authentic way to demonstrate true caring and commitment while empowering students to become leaders and role models for humanitarian action.Showing up, not just paying up, teaches the value of commitment and follow-through, while building a more enduring relationship between our communities.

O Modelo: Demonstre através de um exemplo específico como sua solução faz a diferença; inclua suas atividades primárias

Beginning as pen pals and poets in 2009, my students learned through an exchange of letters, memoirs and poetry that many of their pen pals were orphaned and their families had to struggle to provide school fees. Privacy is a primary concern to young adolescents, and when they learned that the latrines at the Bupala School did not have doors, they were motivated to respond and reach out. My middle school students generated imaginative fund-raising solutions and raised $5,000 to build a latrine for their pen pals last year! The students developed skills as entrepreneurs, public speakers, accountants, and agents for change by enlisting their parents and the community in their appeal. This summer I am travelling to the Bupala School, hopefully with some student representatives, to complete the construction of this latrine. Providing the opportunity for more students to travel to Uganda would allow them to see, firsthand, the power of words to manifest change and help others, while developing ambassadors for social activism. The goal is to provide a framework for our school to maintain a relationship with the Uganda schools, inviting more students and teachers to participate in this outreach effort while meeting and exceeding Common Core Curriculum Standards.

WORDS INTO DEEDS is a grassroots classroom project currently fundraising to complete its first initiative. Other teachers I’ve talked to are excited about the idea, but to the best of my knowlege there are no similar projects ongoing in my region. The idea’s classroom orientation would seem to place it outside of direct competition from service organizations with regular programming. Our partners in Uganda are Women and Youth Services NGO in Kampala, the contractors and volunteers in the village, and the teachers in the rural schools who inspire their students to pursue an education against unimaginable odds. Our inspiration is Joanne Trangle, founder of Kuchanga Travel, dedicated to organizing volunteer opportunities in Africa. Locally, our partners include the greater school community.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?

My students have realized that they have the power to make a difference in the lives of others. Communicating personally with students who attend a school that has no doors on the latrine was shocking to my students. Their immediate response was: We have to help them! They brainstormed ideas and created a Move-a-Thon, they sold homework passes, they canvassed their neighborhoods; then they persuaded a local health club to sponsor an event engaging the broader community. In the end, they raised $5,000. The written exchange between the schools in both countries has continued, and the wider community has become aware of the efforts generated by twelve year old youth. Some of the students who have progressed into high school have maintained their investment in this project: they are planning to travel to Uganda with me this summer to complete the construction of a new latrine, decorated in hand-painted tiles with messages of hope and inspiration from across our community.

Qual é a sua expectativa de impacto para os próximos 1 - 3 anos?

The construction of a latrine that offers a sense of privacy should encourage more young women to remain in school. One of the goals of this correspondence is to improve the learning conditions and to share some of our abundant resources with our Ugandan friends. A bi-product of this initiative is that my students learn that they have the power to change lives through their words and deeds. I hope the students who are involved in this project are motivated to work on behalf of others. WORDS INTO DEEDS is building more than relationships: it is a confidence-building experience that motivates students to take a stand against the injustice they see in the world. I hope to bring more students to Uganda over the next several years, building ambassador skills and empathy in action.

Quais são as barreiras que podem impedir o sucesso do seu projeto? Como você planeja superá-las?

Maintaining contact with our pen pals is challenging once kids move out of my classroom, but my weekly Pen Pal & Popcorn Club has been a way of keeping members of prior classes involved and expanding the network by including students who are not assigned to my classes. Continuing the WORDS INTO DEEDS as an after-school club, and enlisting the involvement of the PTO and the larger school community will help keep our project at the forefront of the school's community service agenda. Bringing high school students to Uganda will empower them to take a leadership role on behalf of others in high school and beyond.

História: Queremos saber mais sobre o momento de descoberta desta solução. Conte-nos a história sobre onde e quando o(s) fundador(res) vislumbrou(aram) o potencial desta solução para mudar o mundo. [125 palavras]

My eighth-grade class became pen pals with peers in rural Uganda. They exchanged booklets about their lives, then each group created a poetry anthology. Among the poignant details: the Ugandan school’s crumbling latrines offer no privacy, and to protect their modesty girls routinely drop out when they reach puberty. With some research and imagination, my students realized they could repair this shocking inequity. They organized a campaign that raised more than $5,000 to build a proper latrine. Activating their empathy in this way was a lifelong lesson in the power of words and deeds to change lives. Several of my students are now working toward traveling to Uganda to meet their pals and help with the construction, literally cementing the relationship!

This sounds like a wonderful project. Maybe someday, the Uganda pen pals would also be able to visit your school / a sister school exchange? I like the idea of students taking direct action that leads to results and global friendship.
