Education is moving further away from meeting students’ social and emotional needs to focus on academic attainment. Result - an increase in bullying, a lack of empathy, and poor social skills in children.

A UNICEF report on child well-being in developed countries found that children in the U.S. have the lowest quality of life compared to other materially rich nations, including reporting low quality of peer and family relations (UNICEF, 2007). The ability to build relationships is a crucial skill that is rarely taught – children need to be given the tools to empathize, make connections, sustain friendships, and resolve conflict.

A Solução: Qual é a sua solução? Seja específico!

R Time is a structured program for pre-school and elementary schools that develops positive relationships between children. It creates an environment that supports and enhances good manners, respect, attainment, citizenship and excellent behavior.

R Time sessions are delivered weekly and encompass six stages lasting a maximum of 15 minutes from start to end. R Time is process-driven, rather than content-focused. It builds children’s sociability and relationship skills through a structure of random pairing, meeting and greeting a partner, completing an activity together, sharing ideas, and thanking their partner, using their partner’s name throughout. Embedded within each session is a continual focus on courtesy and co-operation. It teaches values and how to put these values into action, creating a school ethos of mutual understanding and respect.

Before implementation in a school all staff members (including ancillary staff) are trained in the R Time process to ensure that the process is embedded in all aspects of school life. The program is delivered weekly, for fifteen minutes each time. Students participate in R Time’s six component parts: – the R Time rules; random pairing; introduction and greeting; the activity; processing; and thanking their partner by way of conclusion. They use their partners’ names throughout their time together.

R Time provides the specific language, tools and techniques to build relationships and converse with others and practice giving and receiving respect. Children learn to value others and feel valued themselves. Random pairing, and sharing activities, connect children with those they may rarely speak to, naturally preventing bullying – it is more difficult for children to bully those they have a positive relationship with.

In the two years since R Time was introduced into Texas, one elementary school recorded that the number of discipline reports related to bullying had dropped from 42 percent in the year prior to R Time’s introduction to 8 percent two years later. Another reported a reduction in the number of conduct violations requiring official disciplining by a third.

There are other programs designed to build children’s social and emotional skills, such as the SEAL and Circle Time programs in the U.K. and Character Counts in the U.S. Rather than competition, R Time compliments such programs. R Time is unique in its focus on process over content, embedding good manners, inclusive language, respect and relationships into daily life. Schools use it as a vehicle to teach all subjects, employing R time’s process across the whole curriculum. Its simplicity, lack of additional resources, and minimal time requirement differentiates R Time from other social and emotional programs. And children love it!

IMPACTO SOCIAL

- R Time has been introduced into over 3,000 schools in the UK.
- Local trainers are in place across 16 regions of the U.K.
- R Time has been embedded in 139 schools in 27 school districts in Texas.
- Presented at three International Bullying Prevention Association Conferences, National Center for Youth Issues Conference, Relational Aggression-Girl Bullying Conference, Region 10 Education Service Center Conferences, Region 12 Education Service Center Conferences.
- In the U.S. approx. 4,900 teachers trained and approximately 60,000 in the U.K.
- 12,488 manuals and 454 training DVDs purchased.
- Children report increase in friendships and decrease in bullying.
- Schools report calmer atmosphere and reduction in behavior violations.
- Trainee saw R time’s potential as a contributor to world peace.

Building on the interest and identified need for R Time across the U.S., the focus for development will be on increasing the number of states with an accredited R Time ‘showcase school’: a model school fully committed to the process of R Time which will be used as a training vehicle and demonstration model for neighboring schools. By December 2015, four lead trainers will coordinate R Time development in the south, east coast, midwest, and west coast of the United States to develop R Time showcase schools, embed the program in current R Time states, and develop a train-the-trainer model.

Funding cuts and federal pressure for schools to focus on the academic attainment and testing of students are potential barriers to the success of the R Time roll-out, as schools may not prioritize the implementation of such a program. The financial support of winning this prize will fund school training and train-the-trainer models, reducing the cost impact for schools. ‘Showcase schools’ will assist with communicating the success of the program – helping others to see R Time in action.

R Time data highlights the effectiveness in reducing behavior incidents, bullying, and improving relationships which supports the argument for R Time.

[125 palavras]

As a teacher faced with an unhappy, rebellious, fractious class of children, Greg Sampson knew that something different was needed. Using questionnaires he discovered that the children didn’t like each other. So, he created opportunities for the children to work in pairs with every other child in the class. Through simple activities to work on together, using each other’s names, encouraging them to say something nice to each other - some kind of magic happened. The impact was immediate and R time was born. Greg had confirmation that a powerful force for good was unleashed when a child wrote: “Dear Mr Sampson. You have got us friends we don’t even like”; and when a counselor in Texas said, “This program could bring about world peace”.

SUSTENTABILIDADE

A highly successful partnership has been established in Texas with Richardson ISD and the Region 10 Education Service Center with school district staff leading the roll out and support of R Time in schools. The outcomes have been so successful that schools are on a waiting list to be trained. Similar partnerships are in place in the U.K. where Local Education Authorities are responsible for the promotion and support of R Time in their district.

Freelance consultants trained and monitored by the R Time founders are responsible for the roll-out of R Time, including delivering training conferences and providing in-school training and mentoring.

In each showcase school a member of staff will be designated as an R Time Champion, responsible for the quality of provision and for hosting visitors coming to see R Time in operation.

Independent (hopefully university based) researchers will be contracted to carry out the research.
