Students and teachers often feel that their concerns and suggestions pertaining to their schools are ignored or dismissed by school and district administrators. At my old high school, for example, a friend of mine tried repeatedly to get her very legitimate concerns heard by the principal and school board, to no avail; at the same school, an old teacher of mine has told me about the current administration's complete lack of concern for teachers' thoughts or concerns regarding recently-implemented policies.

The primary purpose of the website is to give everyone who deals with schools on a daily basis a voice and a means to communicate their feelings to an audience beyond that which they could ordinarily reach. A second and equally important purpose is to facilitate dialogue and make sure that everyone with a stake in educational improvement can take a seat at the table, listen to each other, and work together for the benefit of Arizona's children.

Scenario: Students feel that they are not receiving an adequate education (see real life example from Detroit: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/30/detroit-high-school-prote_n_139...). Rather than protesting, the students go to Fixmyschool.net and discuss their concerns in detail. They receive feedback and suggestions from educators, parents, and fellow students all across the state. Fixmyschool.net staff forwards the entire discussion to district administrators. Media picks up the story, but a solution is already in the works: the discussion resulting from the post at Fixmyschool.net has produced a nuanced proposal involving incentive systems for teachers, surveys on teacher quality for students, and increased parent involvement. After some tweaks from the school board, it is approved. Alternatively, if the school board refuses to act, the community has an entire repository of incidents and ignored suggestions at its fingertips in the form of the website; this could be used to encourage citizens to run for the school board and replace the current leadership. Other uses of the website could include reporting threats or other concerns that students or teachers are uncomfortable with talking about in person.

Reddit.com occasionally has discussion threads about "your craziest school story" or "your worst teacher," but again this is simply a regurgitation of old stories rather than a true attempt to reform the system. My biggest challenge will probably come not from these sites, but from Facebook, where students and teachers can vent and ask for help from their friends without leaving a familiar online environment.

The site itself has been operating for less than a month, so its impact has thus far been minimal. However, I interviewed more than 65 people before launching the website to hear their ideas about Arizona's educational system, and many of them were extremely grateful that I was doing this kind of project. When I asked one high school principal what he thought about certain policies or how he would improve educational outcomes, he gave me a look of pure thankfulness and said, "No one has ever asked me that question before." That is the kind of situation I want to avoid in the future by making this website a success.

I envision a situation in which every high school student, teacher, and administrator in Arizona no longer has to put up with policies that make them miserable or ineffectual on a daily basis. Any attempt to implement such policies would be shot down by public outcry after the policies are posted on Fixmyschool. To prevent abuse or intimidation, administrators would always have the chance to respond to any allegations posted on the site.
Going hand in hand with this, these same students, teachers and administrators would also recognize that they are now being held accountable by their entire community—as opposed to an opaque bureaucracy—on a continuous basis. Students would feel more in control of their own destinies and thus would become more invested in their work.

There were certain elements of my high school experience that I was unhappy with and that I felt could have been fixed, if only school administrators had listened to me. Many of my friends felt the same way, both at my school and elsewhere. Once I left for college, I largely tried to put these feelings behind me and move forward with my life. Yet in the spring of my senior year, I had a conversation with the younger brother of a high school friend of mine. Out of curiosity, I asked him how things were going at my old stomping grounds. "Oh God," he replied. "I would need a three-hour interview to tell you everything wrong with this school."
My first thought was: Why not give him a venue to share the contents of that hypothetical interview? Sure, a lot of it most likely would be whining and hyperbole, but I was confident some good could come of it. Two days later, the first version of Fixmyschool.net came online, and within a week I had decided to spend the summer working on the site.

I have not yet secured any partnerships, but that is a top priority for me. I intend to talk to many more school districts, NGOs like the Arizona Community Foundation, and the philanthropic arms of corporations like SRP and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Meeting all of the needs listed above is obligatory for the success of any organization, and Fixmyschool.net is no exception. As the site grows, we will need more mentorship, more investment, and more pro-bono help more than anything, but assistance in any of the other categories would be excellent. I would be happy to help other initiatives in any way possible if they were ever to come to me.
