A necessidade: Qual é o problema que você está tentando resolver?
In discussions with educators visiting the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum, teachers have expressly stated that they have noticed recent changes in the core values & ethics of their elementary/middle school students. Teachers indicate that this new generation is driven by materialism and an increasing addiction to technology – leading to declines in interpersonal skills and a lack of empathy for fellow classmates. While by no means a scientific study, it is an accurate and sad commentary on the state of youth that will become America's future leaders -- and is worrisome.
We ALL need to work harder to change this alarming trend of devaluing the feelings and lives of others. Kids need to be empowered to Stand Up and Speak out! Bystanders need to be converted into UPstanders and changemakers!
A Solução: Qual é a sua solução? Seja específico!
KIDSBRIDGE is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing imaginative, hands-on programs focusing on: anti-bullying and anti-cyberbullying; tolerance; diversity appreciation and respect for all persons; victim empowerment and positive self-esteem; conflict resolution and empathy; sensitivity to persons with disabilities; respect for LGBT persons and grassroots youth activism. Since 1996, Kidsbridge has sought to fill the large voids that exist in the learning of life skills, character education and diversity appreciation with programs featuring knowledge, aspiration and empowerment. The jewel in the Kidsbridge crown is the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum – the only youth-oriented tolerance museum in the U.S. and generously housed on campus at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in Ewing. Each year more than 2,000 students and educators visit the Museum, learning strategies to better deal with the challenging character education and diversity appreciation issues facing today’s youth.

A four-hour visit to the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum is much more than a field trip; it is a transformational experience. The success of this program is confirmed because of the “EVIDENCE-BASED” statistics that support significant attitudinal improvement in: 1) empathy, 2) stereotype knowledge and 3) aspiration to college after just a single museum trip.
Each year more than 2,000 students and educators visit the Museum, learning strategies to better deal with the challenging character education and diversity appreciation issues facing today’s youth. The Museum includes components of the exhibit “Face to Face: Dealing with Prejudice and Discrimination,” created by the Chicago Children’s Museum and purchased by Kidsbridge in 2006.
In an open and interactive environment (also known as a learning lab), TCNJ students and professors, along with volunteer retired educators from the local community, meaningfully interact in small group discussions with visiting elementary and middle school students and educators. To date, more than 9,300 youth have visited the Museum. Kidsbridge’s main focus is to present the learning of life skills, character education, empathy and diversity appreciation with knowledge, aspiration, inspiration and empowerment to as many youth and educators as possible. Kidsbridge wants to equip kids and energize educators so they are better prepared to deal with negatives like bullying, cyberbullying, stereotyping and name-calling -- as well as positives like victim empowerment, self-esteem and UPstander (not bystander) behavior when they return to school.

Quais seriam os desafios impostos por esses concorrentes que impactariam no seu sucesso ou crescimento?
Other nonprofits and commercial businesses present anti-bullying programs, but most are "finger-wagging assemblies" that aren’t evidence-based. Kidsbridge has a differential advantage because our work is built on a platform of empathy and self-esteem activities. Competitors don't exist; Kidsbridge is the only youth-oriented museum focusing on tolerance, empathy, self-esteem and diversity appreciation in the U.S. In a unique partnership with TCNJ, Education & Psychology professors and college students lead small group discussions for visiting students and educators. Every child is encouraged to speak and listen. Kidsbridge plans to create videos and concomitant lesson plans that can be shared, so the “Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum Experience” can be promulgated to schools across the country.

IMPACTO SOCIAL
Temas relacionados à inscrição
Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?
Analyzed survey data indicate that youth show statistically significant improvements in the areas of empathy, stereotype knowledge, and aspiration to college after a single Museum session. This data is supported by the positive and enthusiastic feedback of visiting teachers, guidance counselors and parents who see their kids positively respond to what is being presented; by the supportive commentary of college professors, college students and retired educator volunteers who interact with the kids to broaden their shared experiences in a safe environment; and, most importantly, by the epiphanies and personal reflections of the kids who have been forever impacted by the program. There is nothing more gratifying than witnessing an “Aha!” moment -- when a youth sees he doesn’t need to take what the bully is dishing out and can stand up for himself...or now understands that actions can significantly impact on a classmate’s happiness or sadness...or that one person "can make a difference."
Qual é a sua expectativa de impacto para os próximos 1 - 3 anos?
Kidsbridge plans to reach as many youth as possible with its message to promote tolerance and its mission of inclusion. We will continue to solicit funding to bring underserved kids to the Museum, but in order to reach more students, Kidsbridge will be scripting, filming, and editing “Kidsbridge Shorts,” a new series of short videos focusing on various life skills areas – the first of which are designed to help educators better address bullying and cyberbullying. As integral parts of kits to be used by teachers in the classroom, kits will also include lesson plans, talking points and additional reference materials – all categorized by topic. By capturing targeted messages and lessons on film, Kidsbridge can reach thousands more students and teachers when a Museum trip can't take place.

Ten years ago in a NJ classroom, Kidsbridge E.D. Lynne Azarchi witnessed a teacher trying to get her students to grasp a concept, but it wasn't working. "I realized that wagging your finger at kids and telling them 'you should do X in this situation' is a waste of time. Kids don’t really learn and they'll 'tune you out.' Research says that to learn pro-social skills effectively, you must first generate empathy. Upon a foundation of empathy and improved self-esteem, kids can learn how to: advocate and protect themselves; be UPstanders; go beyond community service to make a difference; be a changemaker creating a domino effect so others will follow. Educators must be consistent in approach and results must be evidence-based, otherwise you are playing at teaching social skills. Make presentations interactive and engaging! Also, student-driven change is most effective. How wonderful our world if we could teach our future generation to be more empathetic, action-oriented and empowered!"

At the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum, Kidsbridge partners with TCNJ Education and Psychology professors and college students. Kidsbridge also runs a Life Skills Program for At-Risk Youth in Trenton, partnering with Bruce Boyd of the B.O.Y.D. Program (Building Our Youth’s Development) for the weekly program. For the upcoming “Kidsbridge Shorts” project, Kidsbridge will collaborate with Passage Theatre and their State Street Project to handle many aspects of the creation of the videos. Other partners (CityArts, Arts Council of Princeton, CYO of Trenton) may be called on to assist as well.
Qual o perfil da equipe (colaboradores, voluntários etc.) que vai garantir o cumprimento das metas de crescimento identificadas por você na seção ‘Impacto Social’?
With a targeted plan and a clear delineation of responsibilities, Kidsbridge and Passage Theatre will both call on staff and volunteers to complete tasks to meet milestone goals in the “Kidsbridge Shorts” project. Passage Theatre will be able to use the various skits and scenarios as teaching moments for their own State Street outreach programs.
In the Kidsbridge Tolerance Museum, Kidsbridge relies on many dedicated volunteer hours from retired educators and new classes of TCNJ education majors that are trained and volunteer their time to act as Museum docents.

In these particularly difficult economic times, Kidsbridge believes in collaborating and forming partnerships when there are synergies; expenses can be reduced as long as the combined effort benefits both nonprofits. A productive way to further leverage partnerships is utilizing social media opportunities.
