The World Wide Workshop works to create access to technology and close the digital literacy divide by addressing the lack of high-quality STEM and technology based learning opportunities that prepare all students equally, especially in underserved communities, to become active participants and civically engaged leaders in today’s digital world. WWW’s flagship program, Globaloria, addresses these issues through a social learning network for game design that transforms teaching/learning within existing education structures, and advances opportunities for informed social digital participation for all youth. The digital divide is a critical issue impacting disadvantaged kids and stalling our nation’s advancement. The opportunity cost of not addressing this issue is our nation’s civic future.

WWW’s Globaloria is the first and largest social learning network, where students develop digital literacies, STEM knowledge and global citizenship skills through game design. WWW believes that bridging the digital divide is not just about access or consumption; but about literacy and engagement that leverages the learning opportunities inherent in the conceptualizing and programming of educational/social issue games. In direct response, Globaloria works in economically/technologically underserved communities, expanding learning opportunities for girls and people of color; empowering non-techie teachers so they have impact in disadvantaged communities and education systems. Students work in teams to create games focused on STEM and social issues. The national social learning network enables students and educators to come together, share their ideas and learn together. In the process, students and educators learn by doing, develop cultural sensitivity, and tools for social change.

Globaloria is a transformative, results-proven and scalable model. A network of open-source Web2.0 tools, Globaloria enables students to learn by doing, collaboratively conceiving, planning, programming, and publishing webgames for social change. The Globaloria implementation model is flexible and turnkey, and can be replicated across a range of structures and communities. A tool of blended learning aimed at educators and students from middle school through college, Globaloria is an innovative year-long academic digital curriculum and social network preparing students for college-level studies—especially in the STEM—careers in the global knowledge economy and civic engagement. The curriculum comprises programmable wikis and blogs, game design and programming tutorials, game-content resources, and virtual support systems. Students drive the design process, taking an original idea (game concept) to final product (game) while learning by doing— becoming educated in technical and computational skills and in content knowledge. Globaloria offers a comprehensive professional development platform and support system (both online and onsite training) that enables non-techie educators to master blended-learning education and to integrate 1:1 computing with game-design and content studies into their classrooms. The curriculum is aligned with state standards for integration into the school system. Game design competitions provide additional motivation and real-world experiences for students. Students research and create games about issues that affect their community & provide solutions.

Developed by the World Wide Workshop, the leader in this field, Globaloria is unlike other technological innovations. Globaloria works within the existing system with local education agencies and schools ready to integrate innovation into their classrooms. Other initiatives such as Code Academy, Game Star Mechanic, Scratch, IDreams, and GameMaker integrate games as learning tools, and some look at game design, but none transform traditional schools from within their core curriculum by implementing actual programming for game design on a large scale across a network, using industry standard tools and backed by the support of rigorous professional development.

To date we have reached 4500 students, 500 educators, in 80 schools and community centers in seven states (CA, FL, LA, NY, TX, WV & Washington, DC).
Selected Research Findings:
• Researching, planning and designing games relating to civic and social issue topics using the Globaloria curriculum results in a more meaningful and lasting civically-minded connection than through traditional curricula.
• Preliminary studies on Globaloria’s impact have shown an increase in performance on state math and science assessments among those students participating in the program, as well as increases in motivation to learn and creative uses of technology for problem solving
• Globaloria inspires girls to engage in and master technology and to consider STEM careers
• Overall, teachers believed they are better teachers as result of their participation in Globaloria

WWW’s story derives from the vision of Dr. Harel Caperton, Founder & President, a pioneer in using new-media technology for digital learning, innovation and globalization. In the 1980s & 90s, Dr. Harel Caperton conceived, developed, and published digital media and learning projects for youth. Her research explored the learning that took place when students worked with computers to develop mathematical software products. Her findings became the core of our vision for the future of education, and the impetus for Globaloria⎯ youth software designers learn not only about programming, but also acquire epistemological and communication skills needed to participate fully in today’s global knowledge economy. Her research proved that by establishing kids as software designers, empowered by digital literacy and supported by a network of virtual tools, education is transformed. WWW was created to enact this vision—to work toward a world where all children are prepared to fully engage and lead.

In each new community where Globaloria is launched we seek out partnerships that will enhance and support the local implementation effectively. We also work with national partners where possible to expand the network and raise visibility. As such, over the past five years we have established a large number of partnerships across all sectors – public-private-government – in states across the nation. Globaloria is led by a team of experts: the Founder and President has 25 years of experience in research, innovation, and entrepreneurship with new media technology; the VP of Programs and Production has 18 years experience in youth networks and instructional design; the VP of Operations and Partnerships has 15 years experience in online communities and non-profit collaboration; and our directors and managers bring to the table years of experience as educators in both rural and urban areas and experience in community organizing, social justice, and youth empowerment.
