ICT is the fastest growing sector in the Kenyan economy. It has increasingly become the industry of choice when setting up businesses and as a solution in all matters of social, economic and political fronts. The uptake of the same among the upper economic strata in Kenya has been easy and almost spontaneous. However, the same is not true among the poor and marginalized living in the non formal settlements of Nairobi and elsewhere in Africa. Further still, while the men and boys could easily get the necessary preparation to access the economic opportunities availed by ICT, girls and women face particular challenges. They need to surmount a myriad of obstacles to have access to the preparation necessary to take full advantage of the numerous opportunities availed by ICT.

Nairobits trains women and girls in multimedia skills, life skills and entrepreneurship using ICT both as a the medium of instruction and as a skill in itself.
Besides, Nairobits uses ICT to avail to women and girls critical skills in reproductive health and rights, life skills and entrepreneurship. These skills mitigate against challenges that are faced by girls and women in their daily lives, and also in their sexual reproductive health and rights arena. This makes the intervention of Nairobits comprehensive and in sync with the realities of life in the urban poor.
Concerning ICT multimedia training Nairobits has packaged a model that includes community based Organizations as the suppliers of the girls we train, on the other end of the skill; we have commercial companies as the employers of the girls trained by Nairobits.All these innovative practices have made Nairobits attain an near 100% success rate in placing the trained youth in jobs after only one year of training.

ICT Multimedia
This is a very innovative ICT course which is implemented in four levels namely course one, two, three and media lab. The courses progressively start from introduction to computers up to specialization in ICT Web design and development. Media lab is the highest and the final level of training after which the graduates are linked to internship and employment opportunities in ICT related companies. NairoBits has partnered with 32 ICT companies in Kenya which offer internship placement to our graduates. Out of these internships, 99% of them turn to employment opportunities for the youths in the same companies. This course is accredited by ECABO and ROC A 12 both of the Netherlands.
Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS program
In partnership with World Population Foundation (WPF), Nairobits trains youth in an interactive youth friendly digital reproductive program dabbed the World starts with me. It focuses on basic ICT, youth reproductive health and rights, HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation among other skills that are critical to the youth.
Micro-Entrepreneurship program
This program enlightens the youth on business skills required to identify opportunities, start, run and grow businesses. By the end of the training, the youth have acquired useful skills to run their own businesses.
Life skills and employability
Nairobits prepares the youths for formal and informal employment by empowering them with life and employability skills. This program follows a curriculum implemented in partnership with the International Youth Foundation (IYF).

There are a host of other organizations working with youth and women in ICT from non profit, for profit and public sector. Some of them consist of middle level colleges and other formal and non institutions of learning.
What differentiates NairoBits to our peers
Nairobits curriculum is very hands on. The biggest critics we have on the Kenyan education is that it is too theoretical and lacks in the relevance to the market.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?
Nairobits has helped in excess of 8,500 productive youth by giving them life and employability skills. Nairobits has a success rate of placing 90% of the youth trained in ICT multimedia skills in internship or employment with ICT related companies while we target having those that are trained in entrepreneurship starting their businesses in 60% of the cases.
About 8,000 youth have been able to use the services of information centres stationed in the non formal settlements in Nairobi hence improved their access to information and opportunities. Besides the ICT and entrepreneurship, Nairobits also trains the girls in life skills and reproductive health to ensure that they are all round individuals. The short term target of this is that the youth acquire the basic life skills and the long term ones that they use them to surmount life challenges and advance in their careers. Replicas of Nairobits have been started in Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zanzibar benefiting more girls and women.
Qual é a sua expectativa de impacto para os próximos 1 - 3 anos?
In Kenya at the moment, there is an ICT revolution with many new skills coming up in the sector. Nairobits envisions including different skills like training in building mobile applications into the training of youth.
We project to train 1500 youths from underprivileged backgrounds in the next there years, with 80% of them being placed in employment or being supported to start their own businesses. We also envisage establishing more partnership that would see the BITS concept spreading regionally and eventually globally for example a new centre in Gulu in Northern Uganda, Kisumu and Kigali-Bits in Rwanda.

The seed for NairoBits was planted back in 1999, when Emer Beamer and Hester Ezra discussed their aspirations to start up a webdesign school in Nairobi for disadvantaged young people. Unabated by critics who wondered why you would start such an unusual venture they forged ahead, motivated as they were to share their skills as multimedia designers and offer chances to others.Luckily they found counterparts in this venture such as Ineke Aquarius, Fiona Whelan, Faith Longwe, the East African Internet Association, Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) and Kuona Trust.
To ground the project and capitalise on the momentum generated, Faith Longwe then project manager founded a Kenyan trust to work together with the foundation in Amsterdam (Stichting Nairobits). While NairoBits expands it’s horizons as a fully fledged Kenyan digital design school, the founders now operate as Butterfly Works Foundation (www.butterflyworks.org) developing multimedia and sustainable projects for social change.

Nairobits thrives on partnerships between us, CBOs and commercial companies. CBOs provide Nairobits with youth/children with seven of them providing space within which we train youth. Commercial companies give Nairobits valuable input in the curriculum development; they act as guest teachers in our training as well as offering internships and jobs to the youth after the training. Nairobits is in partnership with DOT for the training of entrepreneurship for Nairobits students. Nairobits partners very closely with butterfly works foundation in concept development for Nairobits.
