According to NCWIT, between 2008-2018 there will be nearly 1.4 million computing-related job openings in the U.S. At the current rate at which computing degrees are being conferred, U.S. students will only fill about half of these openings. At the same time, female interest and participation in technology and engineering classes continues to wane.
IGNITE's model can engage in any economic situation if the partnerships with the community are there. IGNITE's core community is the Seattle Public School district. Our students in that district tend to be very diverse, and from families who may not yet have sent a student to college.
We also engage in international communities - there are active chapters in Nigeria, with talks in progress for new chapters in India and the Middle East.

Our experience has shown that the biggest barrier to these girls is the stereotype threat. Our model seeks to empower girls by providing them real role models in these careers, dispelling stereotypes and energizing a generation.
Unlike some programs aimed at addressing the very real disparity in female participation in STEM careers, IGNITE exists year-round as an extracurricular program, creating a peer group for these girls that encourages them and increases the likelihood that the original outreach will take root.
IGNITE recognizes that it can take a few minutes to change a life, but that change needs encouragement to stick. Many organizations seek to provide workshops or short-term opportunities for young girls. IGNITE uses an innovative, affordable, long-term approach that builds on the simple idea of shattering stereotypes to empower girls. We eagerly partner with sister groups to get hands-on workshops into the IGNITE context of year-long support.

Primary activities include:
- Year-round extracurricular framework and peer cohort
- Annual panel bringing real professional women into schools to discuss their history and answer questions
- Annual field trips to local technology companies like Microsoft to get new tech demos
- Opportunities for hands-on learning via workshops co-facilitated with our programming partners
- Optional mentoring, job shadowing, and application support
- Social media channels providing a steady stream of inspiring news, discussion and advice
- Support in attending relevant events like the GLITTER conference or college fairs
- Educator sponsorship and class selection guidance
The beauty of the IGNITE program is its simplicity. At the heart of the program is a thriving partnership with professional women (and sometimes men) working in STEM careers, who volunteer their time and experiences in order to reach out to girls about the opportunities in front of them. Every IGNITE academic year begins with in-school presentations, where a small panel of these professionals visit, telling their stories and engaging in discussion with the girls in attendance. It’s this personal connection with real female role models that inspires the girls to explore options they hadn’t seen before.
IGNITE’s success isn’t limited to the Seattle area. Cathi developed our curriculum and a chapter model enabling other schools to implement the program and benefit from the best practices developed in the Seattle School District. This model has been called out as a best practice by the State Department.

As a holistic model that connects at the school level, we're in a perfect position to partner with other organizations to share our access to the girls. In the Seattle area, we are the Teaching Kids Programming implementation partner and have also begun a partnership with Valve's "Learn with Portals" program.
There are of course many other efforts out there covering part of what we do, but our model is well documented, well tested, and well recognized. We are now attempting to get into the funding marketplace since the Seattle School District can no longer cover our operational costs and could never cover expansion efforts.

Qual foi o impacto da sua solução até hoje?
We have positively impacted over 20,000 girls over the past 10 years, and in any given year thousands of girls go through our programs. Even in tech-heavy cities like Seattle, in a room of 60 girls perhaps one or two in urban schools say they know of a woman in science or technology. For the rest, we are the last line of defense, shattering stereotypes and painting a positive picture of STEM careers. In Seattle, female participation in tech classes jumped 50% after IGNITE's introduction.
IGNITE graduates speak of the life-changing impact our role models had on their lives, and have gone on to college and successful careers, including a Fulbright Scholar and many students at tech giants like Microsoft. Girls are now completing the circle by rejoining us as volunteers in adulthood.
The nature of our program not only encourages girls to consider STEM careers, but it increases their self-confidence and helps them envision what they want from adulthood.

Each year we serve thousands of high school girls and a few hundred grade school girls. We will continue our impact and hope to grow participation both within existing programs and with new IGNITE chapters both here and abroad.
