Cultivando Innovaciones: Soluciones para Comunidades Rurales.
It is an ecological cycle of organic cotton, in which the life cycle involves all, from those who seed cotton, passing through those who turn it into clothes until the final consumers (so they rethink their clothing). This cycle comprehends the commitment each one has for his own life and that of the others. An ecologic awareness will only be created if there are those who can design and build that awareness. We know and we inform the customers about the product’s origins, the nature of what he is going to wear, and that way we start a cycle that changes lives.

The technology is innovative and involves more than 700 workers in the Northeast, North, Southeast and South regions in Brazil, working through a network, in a productive chain. The cotton is sown in Ceará through a consortium in an ecological way, without pesticides, using only water and natural products like Nim, keeping multiple cultures to preserve the environment and the sustainability of the rural workers. This preservation process is kept in the confection, being careful not to mix it with the conventional product, and all flaps are used. The Amazon seeds become buttons and props, ecologically benefitted in this process. There is no “middle-man”, so everyone, from the rural worker to needlewoman, earns double the value paid by the conventional market, so everybody in the chain contributes for a better distribution of wealth. The final price of sale has an aggregated value to ensure the sustainability of the chain. Justa Trama is the brand of the clothes from that chain, we sell shirts, skirts, blouses, pants, shorts, dresses and accessories like necklaces.

¿Qué impacto has tenido?
There are two kinds of values that create impact: the first is to be able to acquire a product that has not been exposed to pesticides, with a clean technology throughout the entire process. The second is that there are no middle-men, making everybody involved from seeder to needlewomen to earn 50% to 100% more than the usual for the market, yet reaching the final consumers for a fair and accessible price even for those who are in the productive process. With a greater aggregated value, the workers have a better life and work quality. Besides, the process reduces the amount of pesticides used in the conventional culture of cotton in 25%.
As we work with natural-color cotton – and small quantities of Brown – there is a limitation in colors. This limitation brings the challenge of developing a fixer for the colors made in Amazon region to be applied in the clothes, but increases opportunities and reaches more consumers. The distances between the components of the productive chain make the whole process to be slower, so the time elapsed from seeding to sale takes about 365 days. We have multiple tasks – we are workers in the production line, we manage the cooperatives (components of the productive chain) and Justa Trama itself, so we have great challenges in the selling, visual design and advertising.
The strategy was to reunite the many segments of this productive chain of the ecological cotton. The requirements for those segments were that they should be cooperatives of workers and should work in Solidary Economy. We met in 2 occasions: the Solidary Economy Brazilian Forum and the Unisol Brasil. We kept developing and at FSM 2005 we openly launched the proposal, already with all segments involved. We produced until the end of 2007 using the legal register of one of the cooperatives (Univens) and we created Justa Trama in the beginning of 2008, focusing in accountability and constant discussion of all the productive process and selling strategies. The product is present in stores, fairs and international fair trade market. The coordination is formed by one member of every cooperative and association that is part of the chain.
Impacto
To increase the quality of our products and our sales.
To conquer and consolidate Brazilian and international market.
To raise awareness of customers about the importance of consuming ecological products, clothing or food, convincing them of the importance of preserving the environment and promoting a fairer income distribution.
Éxito en el año 3:
To increase our initiative with more cooperatives, more products, promoting our viability, improving the life of all people involved, from North to South Brazil, strengthening all initiatives connected to Justa Trama, and each one being a fighter for this better world we want.
We do not have an elaborate business plan, but strategies for action.
Paso 1:
To open new markets for selling our products and sustain all o four 700 workers involved, so there is a great effort to participate in fairs, negotiations, etc.
Paso 2:
To participate in all events mentioned presenting our initiative, making it famous and motivating others like us, as we already do with the chain around Amazon seeds. To involve everybody so each one is a defender and promoter of this project.
Paso 3:
To conquer the market and the consumers with new products for a conscious consumptiom that ensures the life quality of the people involved in this productive chain. To bring more cooperatives and new products, expanding to other states in Brazil. We also have the goal of conquering external market.
Describe los resultados esperados de estas acciones.
To improve the income of people involved in the production chain of cotton;
To increase the commerce and conquer new markets;
To make people to be more committed to protect the environment;
To have more rural workers planting ecological cotton;
To foster debate over conscious consumption and its practice;
To promote social justice with a fair income distribution, as everybody in this chain earns as much as 100% more than the normal pay;
To ensure security for the future, as we are present in all stages of the production, from seeding to selling.
Participating of the Solidary Economy Brazilian Forum and Unisol Brasil, we got in contact with the material from the Development Agency of CUT (Unique Workers’ Center) about the cooperative complexes and the importance of cooperatives being together to get strong and develop the production process collectively, so we started meeting at these same spaces in 2003 and 2004. We launched the first pilot in FSM 2005, producing 60 thousand purses with our first ecological production, and then launching our collection by October 2005.
The beginning was animated by Nelsa Inês Fabian Nespolo (from Univens Cooperative) who articulated with all the other cooperatives and their leadership and today leads the cooperative that manages the Justa Trama brand. Nelsa is a needlewoman from Univens Cooperative, married with two children, completed high school. A daughter of small farmers from Rio Grande do Sul, she has always been involved in social movements, starting at JOC (Catholic Workers Youth) when she was in the national board for three years, getting to know the a great part of the country. She has always been a factory worker. She had an active participation in the participative budget of Porto Alegre, and in 2006 she started in the solidary economy founding Univens Cooperative, participating in solidary economy forums. In 2004 she helped at the founding of Unisol Brasil, where she acts as secretary-general. She is a Social Entrepreneur from Ashoka since 2006. She is currently the President-Director of Justa Trama Central Cooperative.

SUSTENTABILIDADE
There are only factors outside our reach, since there is a great conviction about this project that gets stronger everyday. However, we know that we are not an island, so there are climatic factors that interfere with the production of cotton. Because of that we increased the cotton production in the state of Paraná, in the south of Brazil. About convincing customers, we will not spare any efforts to do it. What really worries us is the culture of transgenic cotton, because this is a threat that invades all borders and does not respect anyone’s option.
