Maternal health

Here is a story about one member of the Changemakers community who had a brilliant idea for expanding access to maternal health care.

Picture a Healthy Pregnancy

Ensuring that women know about their rights to maternal health services is a challenge if the women are unable to read. One organization in India found a way.

The answer was a picture book outlining the available public health entitlements for pregnant women. The visually attractive and simple to understand book serves as an antidote to the government-issued information that is aimed at literates. It was the brainchild of Indu Capoor of CHETNA (The Centre for Health Education, Training and Nutrition Awareness) in Ahmedabad.

To encourage regular and consistent maternal health care, the picture book also comes with a wall calendar that helps the expectant mother prepare for a healthy pregnancy and birth.

The calendar was designed to capitalize on the cultural practice of hanging calendars at home and is designed be posted in a prominent place in the house of the pregnant woman so that the plan is visible to the woman and her family for easy and timely access of important information.

CHETNA was an entrant in the Designing for Better Health competition and is just one of the many great ideas for improved maternal health you will find on Changemakers.

In patterns of Chetna, our NGO named Samajik Seva Vikas Sanstha is aiming to bring down unacceptably high MMR in the district of Kanpur (Rural). This district faces many challenges, as it has the lowest women literacy rate in the country and livelihhood opportunities are scarce. Above all, public health delivery system is almost defunct and people are left to the mercy of quacks.

Keeping all these things in mind, our organization, which do not receive any funds from Govt. or abroad, decided to develop a plan by using scentific model i.e. precede_proceed. This is one of the best model for community health analysis, development of intervention plans, and evaluation procedures.

My proposal developed on the basis of above focuses on followings:
1) To strenghten FRUs (First referal units). This involves making government health facilities at PHCs and CHCs level to work by mobilizing people and pressurizing the system. This proposal hypothesises that every PHC and CHC should have fully equipped deleivery center, maternity ward, neonatal care center, blood storage system, and bio waste disposal system. There is a provision for all theses at PHC and CHC levels, however, due to corruption in the system they are defunct.
2) To make women self help groups in the district (SHGs). Project has provision for establishing SHGs so that women can be mobilized, educated and trained on various issues which concerns them. Microfinance is one of the proven method to empower women economically.

3) SHGs would also become points through which spacing methods can be promoted, as district has one of the highest fertility rate in the country.

4) Project also aims to develop capacities of nurses, TBAs so that most of the delivery takes place in the hospital.

Details of project are not limited to above points only, its very exhaustive project. I am sure if that is implemented, it would bring down MMR drastically in the district.
