On January 18, 2010 the judges reviewed the entries for the Changemakers Improved Nutrition: Solutions through Innovation competition and would like to pass on the following feedback (listed below) for your entry. Thank you for applying and for your hard work in the field. We are excited to archive your entry to serve as a leading solution for the worldwide community of innovators. We wish you continued luck with your innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful initiatives.
All the best, The Changemakers Team
“This is a great product especially since it’s a local blend that is culturally and socially acceptable. The use of indigenous natural commodities to improve nutrition is a growing idea and strategy that is most welcome in the developing world. I’m interested though in learning more about the safety of using this kind of a product. While it is local, could they provide some data on safety or evidence of testing this product?”

Many laboratory reports have appeared in scientific and other journals on the nutritional and medicinal properties of Moringa Oleifera or the horseradish tree including its toxicity. Apart from the bark of the roots and the tree, there is no evidence of any inherent toxins in Moringa. A large number of oral reports on the nutritional qualities of Moringa are also available dating many years back. In recent times, Lowell Fuglie recorded many oral reports on the Christian World Service (CWS) work in Senegal and throughout West Africa, on countless instances of lifesaving nutritional rescue that are attributed to Moringa. The nutritional properties of Moringa are well known now. In spite of this, there is not much report on outcomes of well controlled and well documented clinical studies which are of great value in the scientific circles. Of significant note is a study entitled “Toxicological and Some Pharmacological Assessment of Moringa Dried Leaf Powder,” sponsored by CWS, which was conducted by the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, in Ghana, in mid-2002. From this study, it was determined that “. . . Moringa powder (is) practically non-toxic according to the classification of relative toxicity of chemical substances (Echobicon, 1990).” Yet this study did not rule out any potential negative effects of consumption by malnourished infants.
In Dr. Monica G. Marcu”s (Pharm. D., P.D.) book “Miracle Tree” published by (KOS Health Publications in April 2005, a detailed look at Moringa’s nutritional content, safety and bioavailability is found. It was established there that only the bark of Moringa tree can be toxic for human consumption. Two toxic substances have been found in the bark of the root but absolutely no negative effects have ever been reported by the daily consumption of Moringa leaves and seeds. Even with the roots, especially the young ones, when one scrapes the bark, the root can be used to make horseradish sauce without any fear of toxicity. In addition to Moringa oleifera being extremely rich in vital nutrients, it can grow very fast in dry areas of the world, where food is scarce. Use has been made of it as a medicinal plant for the management of many infirmities. Validation of the ancient traditional therapeutic uses of moringa is being and more scientific report will be coming out.
Dr. Jed W. Fahey (Sc.D.) of the John Hopkins School of Medicine et al in their review titled: Moringa oleifera: A Review of the Medical Evidence for Its Nutritional, Therapeutic, and Prophylactic Properties. Part 1, talks on the various reports on Moringa and its usage. The review points out that the unfortunate aspect of many of the reports on Moringa is the efficacy or toxicity in human beings which have not been supported by placebo controlled, randomized clinical trials, nor have they been published in high visibility journals. This aspect will be fully addressed by this project that in one to two years, substantial evidence will be garnered to convince the entire world including the scientific and medical circles of the potential of this plant in solving many of our complex health related issues without any unpleasant side effects. For malnutrition, there is much evidence, although orally, of the great potential of using this plant to wipe out this canker in a short while. For now no toxic effect has been documented over the years and in our outreaches too, we have not been privy to such. In view of this, we will carry on with our campaign whilst seeking to follow proper lines to convince the scientific and entire world to switch to this life saving plant in due course.
Without fear of contradiction or otherwise, I feel we need to consider oral reports too as regards the safety of moringa products. I have not experienced any side effects or problem with the use of parts of the moringa tree for some time now. Rather I have experienced great improvements in my health over the years. I admire the stance of Moringa Oleifera Farms and Industries Limited (MOFIL) in putting forth their products as food supplements and fortified foods but not as medical supplements or medicines. Their slogan, Better Nutrition, Better Health is quite appropriate. For the past seven years, my family had been blessed with good health as we diligently used moringa products especially the leaf powder.
Natural remedies have been used of old to point the discovery way to us. Chicona bark provided the grounds for quinine to be developed in addition to other remedies. Since moringa has not been found to be toxic apart from the bark or bark of the roots, why can we accept it and use it on a regular basis to solve the various malnutritional problems facing us in the developed and developing world?
Hitherto, the moringa we produced locally was not up to the national and international standards and could not keep for six months without deteriorating. MOFIL has given us a standard product which is able to keep over two years and still maintains its qualities and nutrients. Backed by certification from the Mampong Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine and the Food and Drugs Board of Ghana, we are confident of the moringa products coming out from the company.
Will the world accept if we tender scientific reports to buttress the non-toxic nature of Moringa products? Give us a little time, and we will come out with such. I believe MOFIL can do that in a short while.
Can we talk? Why is the world not mobilizing efforts to research fully into the claims of moringa and establish it so that we can have a very cheap source to wipe out malnutrition from the face of the earth. Why do we have to resort to expensive chemical drugs and nutrients when we have a ready cheap solution? By encouraging the use of moringa worldwide, do we also not know that we will be solving a great part of our climate change issues? There will be moringa trees everywhere especially in the tropics even on degraded lands. Consider this.
Maybe, I do not need much evidence again after using moringa oleifera leaf powder for some years. Ii am over 60 but my eye sight and strength are still good thanks to the constant usage of the powder. No toxic effects have been experienced by me over the years. Moringa seems to be compatible with other medicines and foods. I have not experienced any toxic effect after usage.
I write to affirm the fact that Moringa leaves are good and I have not found them to be toxic in any manner. From the various literature reviews I have conducted research on, the non-toxic nature have been stated even in UNESCO magazines.
Although I cannot argue the case of Moringa's safety based on strong scientific evidence, but from my oral reports following the usage of Moringa seeds and leaves for the past seven years, I can say without fear of contradiction that it is safe to use.
We have been forced to change our website address and move the contents to a new site on account of the activities of some hackers. Just this month, our webmaster informed us that our old address: www.moringaindustries.com had been taken by a real estate organization in the USA when our renewal was just due. We have decided to use a name that will not be very attractive to the hackers again. Our new address is: www.mofilghana.com and the email address is: info@mofilghana.com and mofilproducts@yahoo.com. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to our supporters who went to the old address during the voting period. We will continue to offer the best of services. Thank you.
I had first heard of moringa oleifera through an art project (John Newling). Delighted to see its use in the Green Journey. Congratulations for your positive impact.
