Great entry! We would really like to hear more about the nutritional value of the Maya nut and how you are integrating the nut into school lunches. Also, how are you planning on creating a demand for this nut or are you creating a market demand elsewhere? This is a really interesting initiative and we look forward to your response! Thanks!
Dear Naveen,
I found this comment now in a better format to respond. Thank you for your kind words about our program. you can learn more at www.TheEquilibriumFund.org, the nutritional information about Maya Nut is there.
Integrating the Maya Nut into the school lunches should be easy, but unfortunately its not. School boards control what products are purchased for lunches and they often work out "side deals" with product suppliers which permit them to pocket some of the money from the government. This corruption is hurting the children and the local producers.
We have had some luck in Guatemala and Mexico incorporating Maya Nut into school lunches because the school board members in these communities realize that Maya Nut is nutritionally superior, also they like knowing where their children's food is coming from.
As far as the market, we have discovered that schools have enormous buying power, so that if we do manage to make this a national school lunch program, we will be able to sell 3 million portions of Maya Nut per day in each of the countries where we work!!!That is more demand than we can satisfy at the moment.
If you have more questions, feel free to email me at mayanut@gmail.com
Thanks so much!
Erika

“I liked this initiative very much. Using local foods is always a great idea, and the Maya nut is very attractive for potential gains in terms of nutrition. I’d really like to hear more about this initiative’s collaboration plans across ministries and how they plan on garnering more partnerships to lift the initiative off the ground.”

what efforts have you made to fight the corruption of the school boards? Can the students themselves be involved?
