the plan sounds interesting, I would spend more time detailing its impact on nutrition issues. In the end you mentioned Cooperative Agribusiness development, could you please detail this project more?
I agree, I think this is an interesting idea and access to the internet is very important - but I'm not sure how this improves nutrition. Can you be more clear about this? How will the RDB system and ICT device decrease food insecurity, for example? Which vulnerable populations do you mean exactly - women, children?
Also, are there any other programs in Nigeria that are working to provide better internet access in rural areas? If not, you may want to highlight this because that is a unique aspect of your project.
Good luck!
I'd like to second Moises and Debbie - the plan is definitely interesting and a good way to spread information among large audiences. I'm curious where your program will derive the material for the lessons? Also, in what way will you disseminate the program through villages? Through existing community groups? You mention training the trainer - how will you identify these trainers in the rural communities?
Materials for RDB lessons to rural community are drived from the Internet either pictorial or text, using digital camera to capture local event that has RDB lesson potential, alternatively DVD and CD-Rs are all sources of lesson materials for the RDB. Disseminating the lessons to rural village members in utilizable format is the core element of the RDB system that includes laptop and overhead projector in a town hall. The laptop uses wireless Internet connection where there is accessible service network either by Business centre or through GSM vendor Internet service.
The RDB audiance are principally members of the local farming community that were mobilized for farm extension communication. Mark you, other sectors can also use the RDB system say health, education etc. In trying to get the RDB adopted by NGOs working in rural areas, training the trainer becomes neccessary to expand and the NGO will be responsible for identifying the trainer to be trained. And remember, the train the trainer is only to replicate the RDB system to cover more rural areas but NOT training the rural people to become operators of the RDB system.
Hope I am communicating well, and thanks for the response
Information is power and knowledge is wealth. Before, many community members cook Moringa leaf with water and throw away the water (vitamin C extract) down the drain and prepare the boiled leaf for meal. Others cut and throw away Moringa seed pod when fully dried, something that could be consumed in premature tender green form as green vegetable like green peas, very rich in protein. Drying fresh Moringa leaf under direct sunlight destroys the vitamin A content of the leaf. This and many scientific discoveries about Moringa tree were unknown to local communities even though the Moringa tree is native to the communities and eating boiled Moringa leaf was passed from generation to generation. Now, the RDB system is about sourcing digital information for digesting into understandable format for assimilation by local community. If by so doing, the RDB enlightened communities to steam Moringa leaf to conserve vitamin C in the meal; or start using immature green Moringa pod in meal preparation for cheap protein or better still if communities learn and adopt drying Moringa leaf in the room to prevent burniing up vitamin A, I think all these amount to improving nutrition for the household which here in sub-sahara west Africa means alot for under age children and women especially pregnant. But you will be surprised of the age range of people that generally benefit from the RDB transmitted Moringa resource information.
About improving rural Internet in Nigeria, well even in the so called urban areas Internet is yet to be stablized the way it should really be when you talk of electricity interruption, network service reliability, etc. Sorry to mention that rural Internet is NOT YET A PRIORITY to people at the control tower HERE. May be I am just thinking ahead of the ...................? thank you for your response
