Direct Relief International, a California-based NGO has partnered with a vitamin manufacturer (Leiner Health Products) and a non-profit in El Salvador (FUDEM) to administer high-dose vitamin A to poor children to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency. As many as one out of three children under the age of five suffer from vitamin A deficiency in El Salvador. This deficiency can result in a number of health problems, including blindness.
Reason:
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and can be stored in the body for some time. This innovative program began in 2006, and has demonstrated that high dose vitamin A administered every six months is adequate to treat and prevent vitamin A deficiency in children.
