The project fills the need for an increase, as well as the demand, for digital technology, basic mobile hand-held units, (smartphone devices), and secure and confidential SMS/MMS system to solve the problem of a lack of devices and projects to meet the demands of the citizens working for justice in the DRC and other marginalized cultures. Mobile phones will de distributed pre-programmed, and software and application training will be provided by volunteers. Training will be conducted live and via existing social media gathering sites currently used for strategic planning and education on laws and developments. Partner humanitarian groups and Train-The-Trainer apprentices will assist with delivering the plan, and implementing the project/action. This solution serves as a current and tested model reflecting technological advances and methods in citizen media and social journalism.
Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites will be the means in which Eway will increase citizen participation. The Eway Ethical Citizen Media design is accompanied by a code of ethics to guide practitioners in the reporting and dissemination of information and news. Training and implementation designs will empower citizens to participate in social activism, while increase access to the internet and technology. Ethical Citizen Media education, is citizen empowerment through the use mobile phones- for citizen journalism.
The reporting system and information exchange tactics of Ethical Citizen Media is deigned to protect the practitioner by uploading information to a secure, outside-source, server monitored by third party humanitarian agencies or NGO's. Citizens cultivating change can upload their statuses, photos, etc. to a safe and secure editing-aggregation, and using secure tactics. The secure server and upload channels are owned by Eway, and will ensure ethical hosting, uploading, storage. and monitoring. Successful citizen media campaigns are championed as a result of careful design and planning. In the process of designing the outreach and educational activities, developers have included citizen from Nairobi Kenya, and the DRC.
