Hi Bamweshi,
I love this idea - I've seen a few ideas like this in the US but I'm thrilled to hear that your vision is to empower young people within the country to act as peer mentors to others. A lot of organizations use western mentors to mentor other young people in developing countries. Do you think that model is sustainable? How did you identify peer mentors in your community that could act as the next generation of leaders?
Thank you for submitting your entry.

Thank so much for the comment. Every where we go we set up structures like committees. Under Go Sisters we form "Action Teams" which are young girls self managed teams and mostly mentors sit on these teams. The Go Sisters steering committee with parents committees in partnership with sports federations identifies mentors from local communities.

That's really great - what criteria is required to participate as a mentor? Do the mentors get paid? What is their interest or what benefits do they get for participating, if any?

There isnt a specific criteria for participation as a mentor. It depends on the interest from mentors. We sale our ideas to them, share our needs at forums like parents forum, steering committee meetings, partners meetings and the they respond.
They dont get paid but benefit in many ways. I think its interesting contribute to the well being of girls in a particular community. Besides, strong relationships are established between mentors and girls.

Mweshi..
good to see you here mate.
I am so interested in your initiative. Sounds an incredible one and keep it up.
I just wanted to find out, in terms of skills, besides peer to peer education skills/ facilitation skills what are some of the other skills that you are passing into the girls? have you thought of training the girls around PV? have you also thought of income generating projects that the girls could do to help sustain themselves? We have just set up a safe spaces program in Botswana, and our girls have set up a catering services, the income they get, they use it to strengthen their initiative, and also helping other girls within the community (eg:buying sanitary pads for them......

lets keep it rolling

Thanks Kitso. Yes you are right, we train our girls in income generating activities as action teams they set up small ventures and compete in terms of revenue generated. You agree with me that all these skills have to hinge on leadership and thats why our Go Sisters module is interesting.
Surely, Participatory Video (PV) is a great tool. I have trained some girls in this but starting next month we have planned for a lot of these trainings. The only challenge is equipment-once you people help me with video accessories, I will roll out the programme. Cheers man

Hi Mweshi,

Happy New Year.

Iam glad to see your project on this site, i think it is a game changer!

The project has so far been running for a while, could please share with us some of the key principles of its success .

Also are there any community initiatives that you are mentoring as an organsiation or is your montorship restricted to personal level within the programme?

I will stay interested in this entry.

Kind regards,

Lombe

Hi, Great to hear from you and thanks for the interest. The principle is "Keep it simple". Go Sisters is held up by fullticipation, engagement and consultation. Once involved and engaged, girls can achieve more like their male friends. But above all, listen to them, support them and allow them to experiment on thier ideas.
We have a number of initiatives that we mentor in areas outside our catchment. We are a development organisation and we are interested in learning from others.
Yes, lets Go Sisters, we can do it!
