What is your signature innovation, your new idea, in one sentence?

To bring consciousness and quietness to detained young women to be able to guide their lives towards the productive side of society.

How many people does your innovation serve or plan to serve? Exactly who will benefit?

In December, there were 20 girls practicing yoga in the unity of Mooca, where we have 56 young women. The beneficiaries of this innovation are the own girls that practice, Those who do not practice are now in a lighter environment, and the staff also benefits as they can better deal with them.

Do you have any existing partnerships? If so, please list and describe.

We have partners (individuals) that contribute with donation to event and materials, and volunteers that teach daily classes for the young women.

In which sector do these partners work? (Check all that apply)

How do you implement your innovation and apply it to the challenge/problem you are addressing?

Counting on at least one volunteer per day, we have yoga classes from Monday to Friday, from 7,30am to 8pm. Partnering with the Foundation itself, we organize that the young girls will be there for class at time to enjoy it. All volunteers organize themselves to assure that classes happen, substituting each other, if necessary. Yoga in prisons make the rates of depression, anxiety, and stress to significantly reduce among the practitioners. Besides, it provides an ethical and moral standard for these young women who often do not receive it at home. They review their lives, accepting it and discover talents that might change their lives through self-consciousness.

Provide one sentence describing your impact/intended impact

Generates consciousness and human development for detained young women

What does impact/success look like? Please list any tangible measures of the impact of your innovation

The results are measured at the moment, right after the practice, through a light, more optimistic behavior of the girls. The feedback from the Behavior Coordination is that they improve their manners considerably inside the Casa, especially during fights. In the long-run, the young women leave the Casa and do not return, or seek support to study and find jobs.

Is there a chance that your project could change policy (within an institution or government)?

This initiative change significantly the institution’s views in relation to alternative therapy, as it does show results.

Aside from financial sustainability, how do you plan to grow the initiative or expand your intended impact?

The expansion of this initiative would be to help after the reclusion period, with psychological support, as the depression rate after they leave the Fundacao Casa is high, with technical courses and with scholarships to get into the labor market, as well as to keep the practice of yoga to keep them focused on their objectives.

What was the motivation or defining moment that led to create this innovation? Tell us the story.

Since young, I would like to engage in volunteer work. I started practicing yoga at CIYMA and saw that there was a possibility to teach yoga at Fundação Casa, ex-Febem. At first, I could not since I was studying at Business School. In the following year, I changed my schedule at university and went to seek how these classes would work, whether I would be afraid of, etc. I fell in love with it, I met young women that are more underprivileged than aggressive, and in their eyes they only seek an opportunities. Then I decided to join the project. After six months, Márcio de Luca, the creator of this project at the Mooca unit, ask me to take on the project as she was lacking time. Since 2003, I have been coordinating this project, organizing the volunteers, events and donations, together with the coordination of volunteering work at this unit. Today, she teaches classes in yoga centers as well as private classes, using yoga as an ayurvedica medicine, since she is a therapist in the area.
