(18 palabras)

Mobilize a large network of private dentists to use their free time to offer dental assistance to the lower class.

Exclusive clinics to assist low income communities require lot of time, because the dentist has to leave their clinics and drive to another place – far from their work or home. This is of the causes for a high turnover of dentists working in these communities, affecting the quality of the treatment – lot of time, the patient is treated by different professional with different treatments. Moreover, this is an expensive model because it requires lots of investments to build and maintain a clinic and its equipments. In a long term, this model is not sustainable.

In our model, the dentists treat the patients in their own clinic, schedule, using their own products and equipments – that he/she is used to work with. The dentist can also treat the patient until he/she turns 18 years old.

To choose the kids and young people who will be participating, we partner with organizations that serve this public directly. We also have a strong partnership with the public sector to choose the public schools we will be working with. Today we have more than 400 institutions that we work with.

We are also part of two important networks: Ashoka and Schwab that allows lots of exchanges among fellows and organizations. Nowadays, we are developing a big fundraising project for Ashoka and fellows.
The partnerships with the private sector happen through social investments and donations of products and services that contribute to maintain the project. We now have to permanent investors (Cadbury Adams and Portugal Energy). We also created a pool of dental companies in different areas to offer support and benefits to our network of volunteers.

Provee una oración describiendo tu impacto o impacto deseado. (18 palabras)

Mobilization of a group of dentist to promote dental care with lower classes; re-inclusion and bring self-esteem of kids, teenagers and their families.

Describe tu impacto/ logros. (150 palabras)

We measure our impact of our innovative work through the number and geographic distribution of dentists who are working in our project. And through the number of appointments. Today we bring high quality treatment to more than 10.000 kids and youth and we have more than 5000 volunteer dentists working in all Brazilian States. We will launch the program in Portugal soon with the objective of attending African countries. We are also starting to implement the project in some countries of Latin America, like Argentina, Venezuela, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia.
Less than 7 years of work and we represent the largest program of permanent mobilization of dentists in Latin America. We have heard that it is the largest in the world. This means a lot for us, but we know that we need to grow - and have the potential for it.

(40 palabras)

This mobilization of dentists to provide dental care to a larger group of people shows the needs for better public policies. Recently, the Federal Government started to talk about dental health

¿A cuántas personas llegas o planeas llegar? ¿Quién se beneficia con tu innovación exactamente? (40 palabras)

Direct beneficiaries: children and youth between 11 and 17 years old and dentists, who are valued by their social work. Today there are 5000 dentists and 10000 kids.
Indirect beneficiaries: Kids and Youth families, who are benefited by the social re-inclusion of their kids

First, low income families requiring complex dental treatment from the government – that don’t exist yet. Second, dentists playing an active role in the society – conscious of their social actions and responsibilities.

Lots of dentists work as volunteers attending the community sporadically and without any kind of support. Other, on the other hand, would like to do this work, but don’t know how to do it. For this reason, when we present the project and they feel confident about the idea, they join immediately. The worst thing that can happen to the dentist is the delay to receive patients. So we try to have the coordinators always following up to make sure there’s a good flow of patients.
On the other side of the project, among the beneficiaries, the high permanence in the project is guaranteed by prioritizing the cases. Because it is not easy for the family to go to the clinic (it is expensive and with difficult access), we created an index of priority that selects, first, the patients with complex dental problems, difficult social conditions and young people who are looking for jobs. Besides that, a patient, who doesn’t show up more than 3 times and does not justify the reasons is excluded of the program and give the opportunity to another patient. Because we prioritize the worst cases, the possibility of offering a free treatment in a private clinic is recognized as an unique opportunity for the families. The rule of the absence also reinforces their commitment with the project.

(120 palabras)

We are funded by private companies that invest direct in social projects. In medium and large terms, our plan is to create an endowment fund, develop products to be sold as a NGO brand, implement a dental micro-finance project with
Our mid/long term sustainability plan is based in 4 points: creation and management of the endowment fund, development of a series of products (with the NGO’s brand), implementation of a dental micro-finance project with a high payback and income generation for the organization, and increase the number of individual donors.

(60 palabras)

In the short term, the main obstacle is to convince companies to invest with the current global financial crises. We created the “Pool do Bem”, sharing the costs among several non-competitors companies, stimulating the participation of these companies. We are also launching our own brand of products.

(60 palabras)

This year, we want to consolidate our international expansion in Latin America, taking the project to, at least, 2 other countries (we are choosing between: Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay and Bolivia). And in partnership with Portuguese organizations, we are taking the project to Portugal and African countries.
In order to consolidate the international expansion to countries in Latin America, Africa and Portugal, it will be necessary to hire 2 other coordinators. We also need money for air tickets, lodging and equipments to these people visiting the countries. We estimate a budget of R$ 500.000,00.

(200 palabras)

While I was visiting some private schools to talk about my book with tips for a good dental health care, everybody liked the book and my presentations. However, when I was visiting public schools, things were different. After my presentation, mothers would come with their kids to show the bad conditions of their dental health. They could not buy any oral hygiene product (toothpaste, tooth brush) nor go to the dentist to resolve complex problems, because the public system did not offer this service.
Sensitized, I helped some of these patients in my clinic. Besides taking away so much pain of these kids, I helped parents to feel better – because they were always blaming themselves for not being able to take care of their kids. I discovered that I was also opening new doors and possibilities to these kids, that had their self-esteem back, improved their relationships, and were having more opportunities of work.
It was clear that we could change many thousands of people’ lives if many dentists decided to do the same, with small investment. Then I decided to create this project.
