Apart from the Health Child Network, with 24 institutions which follow the model of Saúde Criança Renascer (all of them independently administered), we are not aware of any other project which encompasses so many areas.
The project is innovative and it has proved that it can be replicated anywhere in the world, since the problem is not restricted to Brazil.
Many authors, philosophers and physicians have been writing about the importance of expanding the concept of health beyond its physical aspect. Since Hippocrates, known to be the father of Medicine, to Fritjof Capra and the WHO, this concept has evolved, including a bio-psycho-social perspective, and therefore breaking an old paradigm.
In many places around the world, the public health systems have not been using this wider concept of health. Despite much theory, health still is, in practice, focused only in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, without the preventive and integral view of it.
¿Has establecido alguna alianza? de ser así, por favor descríbelas (150 palabras)
Along the years Saúde Criança Renascer is being able to establish partnerships with companies, institutes and foundations.
Since 1995 Saúde Criança Renascer has the sponsorship from Unimed (since 1995 it covers the medication for the attended families and in the last two years also sponsors training of professionals from institutions which integrate the Health Child Network); L’Oreal (partner in the Profession Project, in the beauty area, offers technical support, work opportunities for its beneficiaries, products, training and practice for the tutors and the graduated students in the course); Senac (offers technical support by offering tutors in the professionalizing courses, validation of diplomas in the courses offered by Saúde Criança Renascer and partner in external courses); Queiroz Galvão (sponsors the Housing Project in the house of the beneficiaries); Unesco (sponsors special food, medical and hospital equipment, diapers, household gadgets, school material); Johnson & Johnson (sponsors educative talks to mothers and teenagers, transportation and snacks for the families); White Martins/Praxair (sponsors the strengthening of the Health Child Network and Project Profession); Skoll Foundation (sponsors the replication of the model and the strengthening of Renascer); Úrsula Hilti Foundation (sponsors the training for Health Child Network, medication, special milk, computers, printers, salary of key professionals); Delloite (offers auditing services); Mckinsey (offers consulting services), among others.
Renascer also receives donations from more than 1000 members and over 200 godfather-families.
Impact

Thanks to the work of Saúde Criança Renascer, the number of hospitalizations in the Lagoa Hospital was reduced to minimum level.
Describe tu impacto/ logros. Por favor, incluye cualquier otra medida del impacto de tu innovación. (150 palabras)
Since 1991, we attend, only in the Renascer Lagoa, to 2595 families, totaling approximately 8736 children/ teenagers, more than 10.000 people. We have supplied more than 1553 work instruments and professionalization courses to more than 2338 family members, enabling them to generate income.
One of the main results is the reduction to minimum level of the so called social hospitalizations in the Pedriatics Yard of the Lagoa Hospital. (For the children who participate in the project, the comparison between the days of hospitalization in the year previous to their entry in the project and the days of hospitalization since they are part of the project shows a decrease in more 60% in the days of hospitalization, as a result the hospitals have more capacity to attend other pacients). In addition, in 2008, by means of the professionalization courses and assistance to enter the market place, there has been an increase of 52% in the income of 108 families who have participated in the professionalization courses and have been evaluated.
There has been an improvement in the familial relationship as a result of the talks in which families participated monthly and the teenager work groups.
We have noticed a decrease in the rate of sexually transmissible diseases and undesired pregnancies as a result of these talks and distribution of contraceptives.
Another result achieved was the improvement in the living conditions with the Housing Project (it does not contemplate families that live on rent)
All the information about a family is added to a data base, the familial evolution is inputed monthly and at the end of the family assistance by Renascer, the impact of the work is measured in that family. As a result we are able to obtain individual and collective indicators, which allow us to constantly reflect on the work which has been developed with these families as well as to generate Renascer performance reports.
Participating families receive home visits once they enter the project, before and after the refurbishing work in their homes as well as when the family will ‘graduate’. The living conditions of a family and the improvements obtained along their participation in the project are assessed during these visits.
¿Tu iniciativa tiene algún componente de intervención o incidencia en políticas públicas? (40 palabras)
The articulation between the public and the non-profit sector is an important tool in the development of public policies. Transforming successful projects, elaborated and applied by the organized civil society, into government projects is a way to expand the scale of beneficiaries, using a method which has been already tested and approved and, therefore, with more chances to succeed. This is what is happening with the social inclusion methodology developed by Associação Saúde Criança Renascer, which inspired health and social assistance public policy in the city of Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais.
The Criança Renascer and the Belo Horizonte municipality have just signed a cooperation memorandum to apply the Family Action Plan (FAP), Criança Renascer methodology, which has been already tested in a pilot project at CRAS Jardim Felicidade and now is being extended to other CRAS in the city as a part of the government project BH Citizenship Program.
¿A cuántas personas llegas o planeas llegar? ¿Quién se beneficia con tu innovación exactamente? (40 palabras)
The project beneficiates in average 250 families/1000 people a month, only in the Renascer Lagoa. The beneficiaries are children and their families originated from the Lagoa Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. In the Health Child Network as a whole, in average 950 families receive assistance every month. Up to date more than 36.000 people have been beneficiated, which have been referred by various public health institutions from different areas of Brazil. The number of beneficiaries will increase substantially with the dissemination of this methodology to the government of other cities starting from the city of Belo Horizonte.
¿Cuál es la decisión clave que estás intentando impulsar a través de tu innovación/proyecto?
By means of the successful methodology of Saúde Criança Renascer we would like to change the paradigm of facing health simply by the physical aspect to start working with an integral vision of health.
¿Cuáles son los principales aprendizajes respecto a cómo las personas responden a tu innovación/proyecto?
The main finding is that there has to be a new way to look into health, including a bio-psycho-social perspective. The public health system has not been using this wider concept. Despite much theory, health is still seen by the limited lenses of traditional medicine, only focused in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases without a preventive vision and integral view of it.
The reality of medical treatment in the Brazilian public hospitals and other developing countries is not facing the actual causes of several diseases that affect poor children and their families, resulting many times in a totally ineffective traditional medical treatment. The diseases are widely studied in respect to their pathological aspects, without taking into account the process of getting ill, the psycho-social story of the individual, etc. The diagnosis is not wide enough, as well as the treatment. Much money is spent with treatment in hospital and after the child is released from hospital she will go back to the same conditions which made her ill.
With our experience in public hospitals, we have found that several diseases are not exclusively or mainly caused by bacteria, but rather by the living conditions these children and their families are submitted to.
The State’s inefficiency to supply basic sanitation, adequate living and employment only come to worsen this scenario.
Public health policies and others do not focus in the living conditions of the patients, being incapable of attending to patients’ basic needs. The needs of the lower classes of the population are not taken into consideration.
The main findings we had about how people see and get to know our project, be it beneficiaries, voluntaries, sponsors or others is how they realize the results we have achieved and start to change this paradigm of a very restrictive vision of health.

Sustainability
Financing source
Presupuesto anual
The annual budget of Saúde Criança Renascer amounts 3 million reais (R$).
Ingreso anual generado
In 2008 R$ 600.000,00 (six hundred thousand reais) have been generated by the Project Fishhook.
Numero de empleados (3 boxes: full-time, part-time, voluntarios)
Saúde Criança Renascer counts on 40 employees who work 30hours/week and around 140 volunteers who dedicate, in average, 8 hours/week to the project.
¿Cómo se financia tu iniciativa (o esperas que sea financiada)? (120 palabras)
In order to keep its sustainability, Saúde Criança Renascer is sponsored by donations from more than 1000 members and over 200 godfather-families, who support families that are being attended to with monthly contributions.
For the various projects within the five areas encompassed: Health. Living, Education, Citizenship and Income Generation, the Saúde Criança Renascer counts on sponsorship by several companies.
For expanding and replicating this methodology, we also count on sponsor companies and foundations.
Besides, for its sustainalbility, Renascer created the Project Fishhook, in order to reduce the dependency on sponsors and donors. A line of products with its logo (t-shirts, dolls, bags, accessories, mouse pads, key-rings, silver pendants, etc) has been developed and is sold in a stand granted to Renascer in the Rio Sul Shopping Mall, its offices, fairs as well as corporate gifts.
A permanent institutional sustainability fund is being developed to secure the lifelong of Renascer’s mission. This fund will guarantee the quality of the services rendered, financial sustainability, independency in respect to financing tendencies, long term planning, consolidation and expansion of the Health Child Network.
¿Cuáles son las barreras financieras más importantes y cómo planeas sortearlas? (60 palabras)
The biggest challenge is to raise funds to cover salaries, administrative and operational expenses among others that are not directly related to the end-activity of Renascer.
The fact that donations for social projects in Brazil are not deductible from tax, i.e., given the absence of incentive for donors, makes even more difficult to raise funds.
Además de lograr la estabilidad financiera, ¿cómo planeas expandir o hacer crecer tu iniciativa? (60 palabras)
The model Renascer is being replicated in the Health Child Network, which counts with 24 centers with independent administration following the same model. Dr. Vera Cordeiro’s dream is that each public hospital in Brazil has an institution in the model of Saúde Criança Renascer, using the FAP (Family Action Plan) metodology, or that local government use this metodology in their administration. We will need R$ 15.000 (fifteen thousand reais) for the next phases of the initiative to expand the Project Profession with a new cooking course. We already possess the industrial kitchen but we need the funding to buy kitchen gadgets and material to be used in the courses.
The Story
¿En qué etapa se encuentra tu proyecto? (elige una)
En implementación con replicabilidad y escalabilidad .
¿Qué fue lo que motivó el desarrollo de esta innovación? Cuéntanos tu historia. (200 palabras)
The Associação Saúde Criança Renascer (ASCR) was founded in 1991 by dr. Vera Cordeiro and a group of health professionals from the Lagoa Hospital who could no longer see children and their families return, after being released from a hospital stay, to the same miserable living conditions which were almost always the reason of their diseases. During their stay in hospital the children would receive adequate medication and nourishment, what would result in recovering and release from hospital. Once released from hospital the children would return to an environment that, in many cases, had actually caused the disease. The misery in those families would not allow that these children continue with adequate medication and nourishment in order to recover. As a result they would return to the hospital yard.
It aims to stop this vicious circle of misery/disease/hospitalization/release/re-hospitalization/death to which these children are submitted to.
Presenta una biografía personal del innovador que está detrás de la iniciativa.
Vera Cordeiro holds a medical degree from UFRJ (Dec 1975), with specialization in Nephrology (São Francisco de Assis Hospital, Rio de Janeiro, 1986).
Between 1978 and 1998 she has worked as a general doctor in the Lagoa Hospital, where in 1979 she has founded the Psychosomatic Medical Department, leading such department since its foundation until December 1996. When this department started to act in the pediatric yard of the Lagoa Hospital, she realized that treating the diseases in hospital, as better as it could be, alone would not solve the health problems.
She founded the Associação Saúde Criança Renascer in 1991, which is a reference model in Brazil, replicated in 25 public hospitals in the country, originating the Health Child Network.
She is an Ashoka fellow, an Avina leader, a Schwab Foundation and Skoll Foundation social entrepreneur and member of the board of PATH.
